1. Dookudu: I LOVE THIS MOVIE. AND ALL THE SONGS SLAP. So obsessed with Samantha in this movie.

2. Magadheera: Classic.If Panchadara bomma starts playing I will start singing idc where I am

3. Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu: I am a sucker for family movies. I love mahesh babu’s character in this and I will always rewatch this anytime I miss my family

4. Bommarillu: Absolute classic. I love everything about this movie. They are both so adorable <333

5. Khaleja: I have no idea why this movie flopped because I love it. It is sooo funny and has a decent plot. I love anushka shetty <33

6. Pokiri: Another classic. All of MB’s old movies are gold. I rewatch this like once a month.

7. Baahubali 2: Do I really need to explain this one? From the cinematography to the plot to these two adorable fierce amazing characters, every part of this movie is amazing.

8. Srimanthudu: ANOTHER MAHESH BABU MOVIE I KNOW (but he has excellent script selection if you ask me). I love this movie’s message. It also has catchy songs and pretty good comedy!

9. Mayabazaar: Ok I know this movie is old but you will not find a better movie and thats a guarantee. From the songs (VIVAHA BHOJANAMBU!) to the amazing acting, this movie is everything to me.

10. RRR: The patriotism in this movie will always get to me. I <3 India 🇮🇳 (also ram charan and jr ntr ❤️)

Cinematography by Guhan is pretty good but there were some inconsistencies in the DI work. Poovai Poovai is ok but not as good to see as it sounds. Guruvaram, Dethadi and Nee Dookudu have been shot well. Thaman's music is good and the background score is pretty decent. Parvati Melton looks hot in the item song 'Poovai Poovai'. Other actors like Chandra Mohan, Tanikella Bharani,master Bharath, Pragathi, Vennela Kishore and Nasser do their bits well. Sonu Sood, Kota Srinivasa Rao and Shayaji Shinde are decent. Prakash Raj is good as the powerful local leader Shankar Narayana.

One wonders why he doesn't get more full length characters. Brahmaji is good in the limited role that he has. His spoofs on Charan's Magadheera, NTR's Yamadonga, Balayya's Simha and Rajni's Robo are downright hilarious. M.S.Narayana is way too good as the wannabe Hero Bokka Venkateswara Rao. Brahmanandam is a major asset to this movie. The way he requests the 'audience' for an sms vote is just way too hilarious. Brahmanandam is terrific as the landlord who is hell bent on making his mark as an actor. He has a knack for bringing the best out of Brahmanandam and in Dookudu its no different. But the screen chemistry between Mahesh and Samantha is a treat to watch. She appears just a few minutes before a song is due and leaves a few minutes after the song is over. Samantha looks good and acts well, but she hardly has any role in the movie. His dialogues are good and punchy and have the required mass appeal. Narayana stand out for their sheer entertainement value. His comedy scenes with Brahmanandam and M.S.

His comedy timing is a revelation in this movie and he succeeds in making the audience laugh. Some actors overpower you into submission with their sheer charm and Mahesh Babu is one of them. He looks stunningly handsome as always and his Telangana dialect has received enthusiastic response from the crowds. Mahesh Babu turns in a superb performance. What is that past? Chittamma, I made an entire google doc about the films I liked (linked in my intro post), you need NOT stop with yours believe me. Because I'm full of love and opinions about telugu cinema. (I feel like S/O Satyamurthy and A... Aa! are the last Trivikram movies I could stomach. I bawled my eyes out in Oh! Baby like Buddy in Manam with DDLJ. I can practically recite Bommarillu, I'm just that talented. Nani's films are mostly good in my eyes and I wish I was in the writer's room for Hi Nanna. Ready and Dookudu are always on my dad's list and mine for comedy.

My favs are all over the place really. *pulls out a really long list* Let's see what we have... We have Malliswari- old and semi-old, Mayabazaar (only and only the old one, the old one), Missamma (ditto), Oh Baby, Shyam Singha Roy, ANAND, GODAVARI!!!, Julayi, A... Aa! because I have a cousin like Anasuya, Pushpakavimanam aka Pushpak, Aravinda Sametha, Chi La Sow, Bommarillu, weirdly Race Gurram, KICK (now *I* need to stop because the list is going on and on)

oh hell yes, Mayabazar (1957) is a musical.

So! You might've heard that "every Bollywood movie is a musical" - which, no. I fundamentally disagree with that, since while the majority of Indian films do have songs, they're just... there, to put it nicely. To put it less nicely, they're breaks to turn off one's brain, roll eyes, and if feeling particularly enthu, to incessantly poke fun at because some of them can be real dumb (I do not care how much my dad loves NTR (the actor): the songs in his movies are always fucking ridiculous and I canNOT watch them with a straight face. Especially if he's wearing ridiculously bright red pants with equally bright yellow shoes. Just, no). I mean, some times the songs in a film can be really fun and worth it, to be fair, but that's usually the exception and not the rule.

So I refuse to classify them as musicals simply for having musical numbers. I instead define a musical as a show in which a musical number is an integral part of the storytelling. If you can remove every song in a film and not impact its ability to tell the story in any way, then it's not a sodding musical imo. So to be a musical: have more than one musical number that is a necessary part of telling the story. And while I don't watch too many films, I'm pretty sure a run-of-the-mill modern Tollywood or Bollywood flick always fails that criteria.

BUT. Then there's Mayabazar. Released in 1957, then was colourised and re-released in 2010 (which is when I watched it). And it was really fun. Now I don't remember much of it, but I do remember "Vivaha bhojanambu [mumble mumble cause I forgot what comes here] Oh ho ho naake mundu". That song was a fucking banger to my childhood self and my current self agrees. If I ever had to describe a song as "chonky", it would be this song.

The only other bit of the movie that I remember is from another song that I really liked - "Aha, naa pellanta! Oho, pellanta! Aha naa pellanata, oho naa pellanta, neeku naaku pellanta, tom tom tom". It's a very playful song :3

Anyway, the thing is, both of these songs DO add to the story. The first is sung by Ghatorkacha when he crashes a wedding with the intention of ruining it, chances upon the kitchen where they're making the wedding feast, and decides to help himself to all of it (vivaha bhajanam = wedding feast). So during the song he gets to work and the food starts disappearing, much to the incredulousness of the cooks. The second is also a song by Ghatorkacha iirc, but this time he's shapeshifted and disguised as the bride and he's generally playing along and pretending to be the bride, so it's the bride singing that "aha, it's my wedding!" and generally being playful.

They're both integral for the audience to follow along with the story. So yeah, Mayabazar is a musical. Dookudu or something is not (tho Dookudu did have pretty good songs tbh). And I'm too sleepy to make sure what I've written so far is comprehensible so bleh.

Oh last thing: Mayabazar is probably the only old-timey Telugu film I've ever watched, actually. So idk if this film was an exception, or it was a time thing and more films from back then were proper musicals and the conventions only changed recently.
