Oh Hi!!!! For the asks……
6. What’s one fact about the universe of You Can Fall that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?
19. If you wrote a spin-off of Open Arms and Wide Awake, what would it involve?
Thank you, lovely friend, for the asks!
6. What’s one fact about the universe of You Can Fall that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
Wow, this one sent me on a deep dive. I had so much plotted out in this universe. Patrick lives in Dovercourt Village, David in the Annex. I absolutely did google the distances between them and the store (near Dundas St West) to see if they were walkable.
That isn't the juiciest of tidbits, so I'll add that in the chapter where David meets the Brewers, they do end up spending the next day making good use of more than one room of the house (although David feels it's disrespectful to do anything in the kitchen). A missing scene I'm going to get to at some point ...
8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?
I love the lyrics to "The Night We Met" - "I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you" - they're so bittersweet and angsty! But it would need to come with some serious HEA.
Maybe "I Hate This Town" would be good. Or something fun made out of "Still Don't Know". Or - OOH! - "I Had a Dream Last Night!"
I have plans for "Ivy" ...
19. If you wrote a spin-off of Open Arms and Wide Awake, what would it involve?
You're really going to make me think, aren't you? Lessee ...
With the admission that I could never make it work, the first thing that pops into my head is an Ivan POV of it - watching David and making his assessments, watching his beloved romcoms, observing the small glimpses he gets of Patrick and David together, then intervening at the end. He'd probably need his own cute romantic subplot with Twyla, too.
Ask me things!

Big Sisters Association Role in Making Children’s Lives Easier
The Big Sisters Putting Youth First
The Big Sisters Association was the original name of YouthLink. During that time span, the Big Sisters created several initiatives to keep youth happy, and to keep them in a good environment.
Th Big Sisters always put the lives of young girls before anybody else. A problem they often faced were parents who did not prioritize their children, or parents who did not allow their children to celebrate Christmas. As a result, the Big Sisters have come up with a lot of initiatives including getting gifts for kids on Christmas, and providing counselling for teenage girls.
Children’s Importance to the Big Sisters
A problem Big Sisters commonly faced was finding an environment that a kid can succeed in. Dr. Blatz went into detail in one specific case about a child’s needs not being met. For example, a girl who is 11 years’ old was placed in several foster homes. They sound that the foster parents were unfit to take care of the girl as she had put her husband, and sons before her own adopted daughter.
Tumblr media
In his speech, Dr. Blatz said that children should always come first. He states that it is the parents’ responsibility to put their children before themselves, and protect them. The Big Sisters believed in this statement, as they did their best to make the girls smile, and be happy with Christmas.
Big Sister’s Impact on Christmas
When the Big Sisters was around, parents were not encouraging kids to celebrate, or talk about Christmas. The Big Sisters thought this was wrong, partly because Christmas should be a day of celebration for children. The Big Sisters Association saw Christmas as something that could bring a smile to a child’s face, and helped several girls in Toronto to celebrate Christmas.
The Big Sisters put a lot of effort and time for girls to get their Christmas gifts. According to Miss A. L. Brock “Our girls range in age from eight to eighteen.” There were 233 different presents wrapped, and delivered for each of the girls. An example would be Treasure Island, which was a “skating set” done by the Big Sisters Association for a girl. The Big Sisters Association would not stop there though and gave several presents to a school in Toronto.
Tumblr media
In 1927, the Big Sisters Association had a Santa Claus deliver presents to 300 girls from the Edith L. Groves Vocational School for Girls on Dovercourt Road. It was a massive undertaking by the Big Sisters Association to help young girls on Christmas.
The Big Sisters made a conscience effort to help girls celebrate Christmas. They also promoted Christmas, and were partly responsible for making parents and kids alike understand what the spirit of Christmas was all about.
Big Sisters Counselling and Volunteer Work
In one year, the Big Sisters helped 461 girls in Toronto (Big Sisters Work Aids Little Sisters). They helped teenage girls with their issues, and additionally, they helped uncles, aunts, parents, and grandparents of these girls understand the problems the girls face. These acts according to General Secretary, Miss Annie L. Brock, increased trust with parents and guardians of the Big Sisters Association. This legacy of helping teenagers has lived on and has been expanded to help teenage boys as well.
Tumblr media
The Big Sisters also did volunteer work throughout the city of Toronto. The Big Sisters would talk to little girls and engage in big sisterly acts. This selflessness can be seen in Pathways to Education Scarborough Village. This program by YouthLink helps youth get educated and give them a pathway to post-secondary education. An alarming percentage of almost 1/3rd of students do not graduate from high school. This program is trying to change that as almost 400 high school students have been helped by YouthLink. Also, like Big Sisters, this program requires the support and help of volunteers to serve high school students and help them get to post-secondary education.
Lastly, the Big Sisters took 79 girls in the spring and early summer months for a picnic to enjoy the warmer weather. This gives kids a good environment to enjoy and not worry about personal problems that might have affected their lives at that time.

Vigil For Homeless Toronto Woman Killed In Clothing Donation Bin
By: Taylor Thompson
More than 100 people gathered on Thursday to mourn the death of Crystal Papineau in the back alley of Bloorcourt Village, the location of a clothing donation bin where she died two days earlier.
A frequent visitor at Sistering, a women’s drop-in shelter, Papineau was homeless. The thirty-five-year old B.C. native had been turned away from overcrowded shelters and drop-in centres Tuesday evening. There is no confirmation but shelter employees say Papineau was trying to get warm clothes for herself and friends when she became trapped inside a clothing donation bin behind a building at 730 Dovercourt Rd.
Toronto police responded to a call and arrived on the scene to find the victim’s body sticking out of the bin. Emergency responders performed CPR but she was pronounced dead. Rangeview Fabricating Inc., the manufacturer of the clothing donation bin, has halted production of the specific model.
The tragedy has sparked outrage among homeless advocates. Statistics on the City of Toronto website show that on an average night in September 2016, there were 4,157 people using the city’s emergency shelter system. In September 2017, there were 5,092. The numbers continue to rise.
“There are approximately 5,000 people in Toronto who are homeless, with nearly 3,200 people on the waitlist for supportive housing.” Homes First, housing and support service in Toronto.
Kapri Rabin, executive director at Street Health, a non-profit organization that strives to improve the health and wellbeing of homeless in Toronto, is demanding the city make changes.
“On the night that Crystal died, the women’s shelter system was at capacity and the back up 24-7 drop in system was also at capacity. That crisis contributed to Crystal’s death,” she said.
The incident has prompted Mayor John Tory to write to the city’s licensing committee who is reviewing dropbox bylaws. He is asking members to include safety as part of that review. This is not the action people were hoping for.
“We’ve got a mayor that deals with homeless issues and homeless deaths by talking about fixing the steel structure of a clothing donation box,” said Cathy Crowe, journalist and self-labelled street nurse.
Crowe and a group of fellow advocates from the newly-formed Shelter And Housing Justice Network are demanding the mayor declare a state of emergency on homelessness. They are asking for federal empty buildings to be converted into homeless shelters and an additional two thousand shelter beds by the end of the month.
To those who knew Papineau it is a senseless tragedy but one they believe will spark the necessary need for change.
“Crystal left us a gift and the gift was the beginning of this gathering. She has given us this opportunity, sadly, to say homelessness in this city, in this province, in this country is an epidemic,” said Patricia O’Conelle, executive director of Sistering.

A legacy of landscapes
Tumblr media
Words Derek Kinrade
This is the story of the designer and first superintendent of Peckham Rye Park, hitherto largely omitted from historical accounts.
The development of the park, an extension of the Common, was achieved in two distinct stages. It was first made possible in 1892, when the owners of the adjoining Homestall Farm indicated a willingness to sell their land. Its purchase, however, was made subject to the retention on lease of 13 acres at the centre of the plot, along with the old farmhouse, by the vendors C.W. and A. Stevens.
The remainder of the farm land, retaining some of its best shrubs and trees, was adapted as a public park to provide a range of areas for sporting activities and playgrounds, and was opened on Whit Monday, 14 May 1894, with great ceremony.
It was only in January 1907, after the deaths of the Stevens brothers, that London County Council (LCC) was able to take possession of the retained farmland. Laying-out of this section followed through 1907 and into 1908. Only then were some of the most familiar features of the park created, notably an Old English Garden and an American Garden, later followed by a Japanese Garden.
Spearheading this project was John James Sexby, the LCC’s Chief Officer of Parks; and at Peckham Rye Park it is his name which is remembered and was honoured, after his death, by renaming the Old English Garden as the Sexby Garden.
But every commander-in-chief needs an aide-de-camp, and Sexby had the benefit of an illustrious colleague. This was Arthur John Ashmore, whose guiding hand was particularly important in the second phase of the park’s development. An LCC minute of 12 February 1907 confirms Ashmore’s role: “the present superintendent is the senior of his rank, and is fully competent to undertake the special work involved in the laying out of Homestall Farm.”
Retrospectively, that competence was spelled out again in August 1951. A cutting from The South London Advertiser, preserved by Southwark’s Local History Library, reported: “A man whose public service has brought beauty and pleasure to thousands of South Londoners was honoured by a visit to his Dulwich home by the Queen on Wednesday evening...
“Mr. Ashmore began his career with the LCC in 1889 and was second in charge at Dulwich Park when there was hardly a shrub to be seen in there. After helping to lay out much of Dulwich Park he became Superintendent of Peckham Rye Park when it opened in 1894 and during his service there until 1929, he was responsible for the entire lay-out of that park.”
Nevertheless, further information about Arthur Ashmore has proved elusive. In a wide-ranging search I found only one other mention of him - in local historian John Beasley’s book on the Centenary of Peckham Rye Park. Even there, John failed to acknowledge Ashmore’s seminal role in the creation of the park, but he did cite as one of his sources Corinne Wakefield, Ashmore’s granddaughter; a lady my inveterate colleague Deborah Elliott discovered to be still very much alive at her home in Leigh-on-Sea. Thus I gained access to a cornucopia of memorabilia.
Arthur Ashmore was born in 1865 to Rebecca and Thomas Ashmore in the idyllic Cambridgeshire village of Houghton, on the Great Ouse. Thomas was head gardener at a large house in the area, and on leaving school Arthur went to work there as a garden boy under his father.
The owner of the house took a keen interest in his gardener's son, spotting him as a bright lad and encouraging him to better himself. Encouraged by his employer's suggestion to get experience in different nurseries, Arthur moved to London. He first lived in South Norwood and it was there that he met Emily Ann Hockin, who, with her sister, had come to London from Tintagel in Cornwall to work as a ‘lady’s companion’.
Arthur and Emily were married in April 1889, when Arthur was 24. The following year they had their first child Elsie, followed in 1894 by a son, Stanley. Corinne, who is Stanley’s daughter, remembers her grandparents well, not least Emily:  “bossy, but adored by her sweet and gentle husband”.
In the year of his marriage Arthur entered the service of the LCC to assist in the laying out of the new Dulwich Park. Over the years he also frequently acted as judge for the London Gardens Society and at the Chelsea Flower Show, and in 1930 was made an Associate of Honour of the Royal Horticultural Society.
He laid out gardens in various parks in south London, including the sunken garden in Horniman’s Museum Park, but was especially proud of the rhododendron garden in Dulwich Park: the so-called ‘American Garden’. Every year in May, when the garden’s flowers were in full bloom, Queen Mary would make private visits, asking her driver to drive round the park, especially to view the rhododendrons.
Corinne confirmed that in early 1894 Arthur was appointed Superintendent of the new Peckham Rye Park, a position he enjoyed for 35 years until his retirement, guiding its creation and overseeing its development. On Sundays, she has been told, he would appear in the park wearing a tall silk hat, silk waistcoat with watch chain and frock coat.
A large and imposing lodge, Sandford Cottage, at the junction of Colyton Road and Forest Hill Road, went with the job. But Emily didn’t like it. She insisted they move nearby to 61 St. Aidan’s Road in East Dulwich, and later to 10 Desenfans Road, near Dulwich Village.
Arthur enjoyed a long retirement and Corinne has first hand recollections of those days.  She remembers that her grandfather was helpful at home and frequently did the shopping, but that he discreetly carried his purchases home in an attaché case. And that he would always cut the bread and butter, beautifully thin, for the family’s Sunday tea.
In 1940, when London was being heavily bombed, Arthur and Emily departed to live with relatives, first in Tintagel, and later in Erith, Cambridgeshire. On their return they moved in with their widowed daughter Elsie at 67 Dovercourt Road. It was there that Arthur was visited by the Queen. Finally, they moved to Folkestone in Kent, where they died.
Corinne paid tribute to Arthur as: “the perfect grandfather, always friendly, kind and caring”, whom she loved very much. “I am glad,” she said, “that after all these years he is finally receiving recognition for his work in Peckham Rye Park and other parks.”
She treasures a Gold Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society and, to be fair, Southwark Council has not entirely neglected his memory. In 2002, Ashmore Close was so named at the suggestion of John Beasley. A great man. No longer, I hope, to be forgotten.
