A Story for Star Trek Day

I've told this story on Twitter before. I tell it every Star Trek Day and whenever a Deep Space 9 anniversary rolls around. It's about me and Avery Brooks (aka Best ST Captain Benjamin Sisko).

The college my mother went to specifically started recruiting top Black students in the 60s. Due to this, the Black kids all mostly knew each other as they were in that same program. Avery Brooks went to the same college and they were good friends.

(She once told me he had a huge crush on her and I was like MOM. MOTHER. WHAT. HOW COULD YOU HE COULD HAVE BEEN MY DAD.)

Anyway, many of the students in this program remained friends long after college. So over the years as Avery was getting TV gigs & such we would all watch cuz he was my mom's friend & I thought that was the coolest. There was one particularly fun night when my best friend's uncle, Frankie Faison, guest starred on A Man Called Hawk. TWO people we know on TV!

When I was in middle school Avery was touring his production of "Paul Robeson" and it came through our town, so I got to see him perform in person (awesooooome) and meet him for the first time since I was a baby (which I did not remember, of course).

Now, backing up a little bit: I am a Star Trek fan because of my mom. She loved the original series and I remember being a wee Tempest in front of the TV watching The Wrath of Khan and us excitedly going to see Star Trek IV together.

I watched TNG from the instant it appeared on TV because of her. I watched all of The Animated Series even though everyone looked "wrong". (Man... it took me 4 months to realize that dude in the red shirt was Scotty cuz I'd only ever seen movie Scotty.)

Then... they announced Deep Space 9.

We heard Avery Brooks would be the commander and there was MUCH rejoicing around our house. DS9 turned out to be the best Trek ever and, of course, Avery was awesome. This was around the time my mom dropped that "he had a crush on me but I wasn't interested" bombshell.

I'm still bitter.

I mean, I love my dad he's great. But SISKO COULD HAVE BEEN MY DAD.

I lost my mom in 1999. She was--and I'm not exaggerating--an extraordinary woman and beloved by many. I received so many beautiful messages of condolence from her friends all the way back to those college years, including Avery. So many people remembered her fondly. <3

I kept watching Star Trek and often talked to her as if she was there during episodes. She would have LOVED Discovery. Especially since she took me to RENT the year I started college. I'm sure she would have shared my opinion of Enterprise as well. But she loved her some Scott Bakula, so she would have watched, anyway.

I got the chance to interview Avery Brooks at DragonCon back in 2013 (jeez, it's been almost 10 years omg). Before the interview, I went up to him on the Walk of Fame and I said:

Hi, I'm (name K stands for) Bradford, I don't know if you remember me...

And he looked up and said: Of course I remember you.

We talked for a bit and I asked if I could come back and interview him later and he said yes (he wasn't supposed to; his handler had A LOOK). I didn't want to hold up his line, so I said I'd see him later.

Before I could go, he reached out for my hand and squeezed it before saying: I loved your mama, you know.

And we just stayed like that for a few seconds, missing her together.

...I might have been trying very hard not to burst into tears.

That DragonCon was the last time I saw Avery. Barring an extraordinary circumstance, that's probably the last time I'll see him in person. I'm glad we got to have that moment together. And we had a great conversation!

And I'm glad that it's another tie between me, my mom, and Trek. I can't watch DS9 without hearing her voice giving color commentary. Even the episodes she didn't live to see.

I think Star Trek is part of what gave her hope for the future. She passed that on to me. ❤️🖖🏾❤️

Harrison Krix of Volpin Props City: Atlanta, GA As ridiculous as it sounds, my current “goal” is to have a Wikipedia page about me that I didn’t write! That’s kind of a strange goal, but eventually if I keep making things that people like, it might happen. In the long, long, long term I’d eventually like to work for a production studio and make custom projects like this full time. I have this equally insane idea of working in cinema and winning an Academy Award someday… but man is that a pipe dream! For now, I’m just a dude in his garage and the only real thing I’m trying to do is continue to build neat stuff. As long as I can keep learning and expanding my skills, I’ll be happy.

It began in October of 2007 – my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I had just finished playing Twilight Princess and really wanted to go as Link and Midna for Halloween. I started doing some research online about costuming and prop construction, and that’s where I found out about Cosplay as a hobby in general. She decided to tackle the sewing bits while I attempted to make our props in about a week. Looking back, those first ones were done super cheap, but they got me introduced to a lot of new materials and techniques. A lot of our friends told us we should try out DragonCon in ‘08, and after visiting that once, we were hooked.A little while after, I started work on the Portal gun, which was a lightning strike. It got a ton of press pretty much overnight and suddenly people wanted me to make stuff for them!

I think my commissions are a bit different than most people. Since I do this in my free time, and not really as a source of primary income, I tend to pick commissions that I’m personally interested in making.

I think that the greater my affinity for a build is, the better the eventual product will be. The idea of challenging myself is also something I look for when I take on a project, which is why I rarely build the same thing twice. I like learning new materials, techniques, and skills. I prefer to push myself to try new things and constantly expand my skillset, so I can continue to make more complex and intricate pieces with each new project I attempt.

SO this is actually relativley hard what with one of the side effects of ongoing brain weasel infestation is difficultly creating happy memories (cuz u need seratonin for that apparently? who came up with this system, I would like several words!!)

I think my Favorite might be the Fall Out Boy show in Atl at the Tabernacle, when save rock and roll came out? I can very distinctly recall the surge of FEELS I felt when I heard the beginning of Thriller, but tbh thats it because brain weasels are irl Dementors and i really need science to get on top of a cure for this shit. That memory is from 2013 and I genuinely cant remember very much from the years before that AtAll. And tbh most of the years since are incredibly fuzzy too. I know I had good times! But only if there were pictures. Because quite honestly I have nearly 0 memory of that concert or most of those other nights/occasions where there is photographic evidence of me having what appears to be a good time. The ones where no pictures were taken might as well have never happened to my mind.🙃🤬😭

That being said... my most recent happy memory, and therefore one that my brain can almost sorta mostly remember is probably from the pool party we had last yr since dragoncon was off the table. It was obvs during covid and I had to isolate myself 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after to play it safe, but doing my stupid lil pool cosplays and getting tipsy with the homies was a much needed mood boost last summer/fall.

Polly Pocket, how did you decide on Polly Pocket? I've never seen a cosplay of this character ever!

I love cosplaying 90’s throwback characters, and I’m always pulling from my childhood for new ideas. Polly Pocket came up in a brainstorm and I couldn’t stop thinking about how to bring it to life! I had this particular Polly Pocket as a kid and it was one of my favorites.

How was the cosplay put together? Was there actually sand? How did you walk around with it attached to you?

The base of the costume is a children’s sandbox – a super random find on the internet - it was the perfect size. I used cardboard to make the inserts, then built up the scenes.

Most of the items are built from craft foam, dollar store items, or dollhouse toys. The sand is crinkled aluminum foil, spray painted with textured paint to look more realistic. I cut a hole in the base sandbox the same size as my hips and lined it with a pool noodle for comfort. The costume stays on by sitting on my hips, and the back of the shell stays upright with two coat hangers I attached through the background like backpack straps. The costume came together within 2 weeks – not my highest quality costume but definitely my most fun!

What was the response at DragonCon? Was there any memorable moments with congoers?

The response at DragonCon was overwhelmingly positive. I couldn’t walk more than a few feet without people stopping to look or take photos! I love that so many people share my nostalgia for childhood toys and characters.

A memorable moment was on Saturday in the Marriott lobby – the costume is wide and hard to move through crowds in, and some fellow congoers saw me get stuck and jostled. They stepped in and escorted me to a wall. Kindness abounds at DragonCon!

How did you first discover cosplaying?

I attended my first DragonCon in 2013 and that was my initial exposure to cosplay. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday and I go all out with costumes, so to discover a hobby which let me do that year round and with likeminded people… game changer! I really got into creating my own cosplays in 2015, when I attended DragonCon again. My passion for it has grown every year since.

How has cosplay impacted your life?

I’ve made some of my best friends through this hobby – that’s the biggest impact. People that “get” me and support me even from afar. It’s increased my confidence and challenges me to learn more with each project. Every time I finish a project or grow in my skillset, it’s another confidence boost!

An unexpected impact has been the way I feel when I’m cosplaying. When I’m in costume I feel like I can be fully, unapologetically myself. I can take up as much space as I want. I don’t have to fit in or meet expectations. I’ve often found it strange that when we wear a disguise we can become more free to be ourselves!

How are you handling the pandemic in relation to cosplay (besides the conventions)

2020 was a rough year in terms of creative motivation (and everything else, right). I spent a lot of time off of social media, because seeing how productive other creators were during quarantine made me feel like I wasn’t doing enough.

The majority of sewing I did was masks, which sapped my desire to make creative things.  Thankfully I got a little groove back towards the end of the year and started working on some long-procrastinated costumes. I'm slowly starting to plan new designs and am cautiously optimistic for future conventions. Through it all, I am grateful for my cosplay crew who help me stay sane via group chats and video calls!

Meet the Admin!

Hi all! Thank you for the followers I've gotten so far! I decided to make this duck-centric blog to save my mutuals over on main!

A little bit about myself: I'm a 30-something who has been in the fandom since the late 90s. I watched the original DuckTales as a kid, and I specifically remember watching the pilot of Darkwing Duck the night it aired, because I'd been jazzed about it all day. I was practically vibrating! I was a month shy of turning 10.

Pictured: Your fearless admin with the first comic series, back in 2010. a.k.a. The actual reason why I created a Tumblr blog in the first place! So that I could complain about how wrong most of that series was. :D

I stayed a huge Disney Afternoon fan through my teens, then when the internet widely became a thing, I found like-minded friends online. I wrote a LOT of Darkwing and DuckTales fanfic during the summer I was 16. My best friend and I were pretty singularly focused on those fandoms that summer. We were part of an email group/list called DAFT that accepted fan works for all Disney Afternoon shows, and I think I must have had a new fic coming out every week for a while!

An amusing anecdote is that I met a girl online through this fandom, probably that same summer, and we're still friends to this day! But we've never met in person, even though we only live 45 minutes apart! It's a constant source of amusement for us.

I've actually written a monster Darkwing Duck/DuckTales crossover fic, but it's currently going through a MAJOR rewrite. I think I finished it back in 2012 or 2013, but I know it can be more polished, and I'd like to make it more DT17 compliant.

And, lastly, because I have no shame... that time I cosplayed as a femme gijinka Darkwing Duck. Dragoncon 2014.

I'm honestly so happy that DT17 is as good as it is, and I love the new Darkwing origin. I've become so energized, and I'm thrilled to come back to this fandom!
