THE VALUE OF PROCESS AND APPLICATION CONSISTENCY IN DRILLING AUTOMATION | HELMERICH & PAYNE
Tumblr media
Effectively automating drilling a stand while minimizing human variability requires a scalable control system, providing adaptability, seamless implementation, and improved operational outcomes. The system requires high- and low-level process control components to effectively control rig machinery within the bounds of the machine limit controls. By using automation sequences while engaging and disengaging the drill bit, operational states such as breakover, optimal weight on bit (WOB), steady state hookload, and zeroing become easier to distinguish.
Through consistent implementation of process automation in drilling operations, the impact on operational outcomes became evident. Analysis of bit disengagement in a series of automatically drilled stands in the lateral revealed a consistent breakover range of 18 to 22 ft. This is particularly noteworthy as breakover is typically more challenging to identify and prone to variability in manual operations.

Not all invisible lost time and variability is human related; variability due to equipment design was reduced. Torquing drillpipe connections is essential to drilling a well. Development of high spec automated floor wrenches improved make-up connection torque accuracy and consistency primarily associated with fundamental tool design. These improvements led to a connection integrity paradigm shift, reducing manual tong usage by 99%, effectively eliminating the need for high torque tongs at a wellsite, leading to improved tripping time and safety.
As drilling automation continues to evolve, the outcomes obtained through consistent process execution provide valuable insights. Additionally, this contributes to a decrease in emissions per unit of hydrocarbon production. Consistency through automation reveals new avenues for in-depth technical discussions on achieving safe and efficient drilling of progressively complex wells.

A top drive is a mechanical device on a drilling rig that provides clockwise torque to the drill string to drill a borehole. It is an alternative to the rotary table and kelly drive. It is located at the swivel’s place below the traveling block and moves vertically up and down the derrick. The top drive allows the drilling rig to drill the longer section of a stand of drill pipe in one operation. A rotary table type rig can only drill 30-foot (9.1 m) (single drill pipe) sections of drill pipe whereas a top drive can drill 60–90-foot (18–27 m) stands (double and triple drill pipe respectively, a triple being three joints of drillpipe screwed together), depending on the drilling rig size. Handling longer sections of drill pipe enables a drilling rig to make greater daily progress because up to 90-foot (27 m) can be drilled at a time, thus requiring fewer connections to add another 30-foot (9.1 m) of drill pipe. Another advantage of top drive systems is time efficiency. When the bit progresses under a kelly drive, the entire string must be withdrawn from the well bore for the length of the kelly in order to add one more length of drill pipe. With a top drive, the draw works only has to pick up a new stand from the rack and make up two joints. Making fewer and quicker connections reduces the risk of a stuck string from annulus clogging while drilling fluid is not being pumped. Several different kinds of top drives exist, and are usually classified based on the Safe Working Load (SWL) of the equipment and the size and type of motor used to rotate the drillpipe. For offshore and heavy duty use, a 1000 short ton unit would be used, whereas a smaller land rig may only require a 500 short ton device. Various sizes of hydraulic motors, or AC or DC electric motors, are available.

MITIGATING AND UNDERSTANDING STICK-SLIP IN UNCONVENTIONAL WELLS
Tumblr media
Stick-slip is still present in most of the wells drilled today, especially in unconventional wells. Friction is an inevitable and important force along the long lateral section, but it contributes to many types of dysfunctions that lead to drilling inefficiency. Stick-slip is caused mainly by rotational friction induced along the drillstring, from the drill bit cutting the rock formation to the bottom hole assembly and drill pipe that contact the well bore.
In the past, much attention has been given the cutting action of polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits to explain and mitigate stickslip, without much emphasis on the frictional torque. However, it is important to understand that the torque generated on the remaining drillstring accounts for most of the total torque at surface. This paper presents a case study on an unconventional well where stick-slip modeling was used to explain and understand stick-slip vibrations with or without the presence of active control systems at surface.
First, the stick-slip model, including a PDC bit law friction and accurate contact forces calculation along the drillstring and mud damping effect is fully described, with all necessary and field parameters needed. Then, it explains the process to reproduce and calibrate downhole and surface torque, using a sensitivity analysis showing the most important parameters that affect stick-slip results. The results reinforce the importance of drilling parameters, such as the weight on bit and associated torque on bit that define the bit aggressiveness and are key in controlling or mitigating stick-slip vibration.
In addition, these results show the significance of string friction along the drill pipe. Next, the use of a downhole instrumented sub, along with wire drillpipe technology, enables a full comparison of the results of the model with downhole and surface data. Last, the affect of other parameters, such as friction coefficient and mud damping, are discussed. Interesting, right? DRILL PIPE STRESS AND CUMULATIVE FATIGUE ANALYSIS IN COMPLEX WELLS DRILLING: NEW APPROACH IN FATIGUE OPTIMIZATION
In the today high-cost and complex drilling environment, the importance of drillstring failure issue has dramatically reappeared, in spite of many manufacturing and materials improvements. Most drillstring failures are due to fatigue, resulting from repeated cyclic bending loads and stresses in tensile or buckled drill pipes. Fatigue prediction is usually based on the cumulative fatigue damage model from Hansford and Lubinski as defined in API RP7G. This model, based on S-N curves, a failure criterion and a damage accumulation rule, initially requires a calculation of the drillpipe stress caused by bending when rotated in a dog leg. This bending stress calculation, key point of the cumulative fatigue damage model, is usually made by assuming that the curvature of the drill pipe is the same as the dog leg. However, this paper shows that this strong hypothesis may lead to major under-estimation of the cumulative fatigue damage. Moreover, the stress distribution within a drill pipe may be completely different depending mainly on the position of the drill pipes along the drillstring and the wellbore architecture and tortuosity. The cumulative fatigue damage model as defined in API RP7G has been implemented in an advanced torque and drag model, which enables to track any given point of the drill pipe while drilling, such as the transition zone, the tool joints and the drill pipe body. For the first time, it has also been possible to fully track variation of stresses at a given point in the drill pipe. Based on drill pipes S-N curve available in the literature and actual drilling data, this paper shows and compares results of fatigue damage calculations as obtained from the conventional way (strong hypothesis on the contact) with results obtained from advanced torque and drag model that make no assumptions about the contact.
