A long post about tatting lace

I saw many people reblogging my tatted thingies saying they would like to learn, which fills me with joy because more people should learn the beautiful art of tatting. I thought I'd spend my two cents here on the tatting tools you can start with, because they look cool and I like to rave about tatting.

Shuttles

These are some of my shuttles (they're handmade), but showing them off is not the only point - there are different types of shuttles and I have my preferences, like everyone.

Cardboard shuttle: first, one thought about this underrated shuttle that may be useful if you want to start but you are not sure if you will like it.

If you want to learn tatting, chances are that you already are into crafting and you have a tiny crochet hook and thin crochet thread at home. Then you can definitely cut a shuttle out of cardboard and watch one of the many available tutorials on YT to see how to make the knots, and then you can decide if it’s something for you.

Real shuttles

Now for the “real shuttles” I’ll refer to the ones by Handy Hands, but there are other brands too. You can find the Prym shuttles on Amazon, and if you’re into handmade stuff you can find handcrafted shuttles on Etsy.

I think there are two main groups of shuttles: with and without bobbins. They can be with or without hook.

Shuttles without bobbin

Examples: Sunlit, Moonlit, Starlit by Handy Hands; they come with or without hook, or with the pick (the pointy tip)

Most of my shuttles are without bobbin. The downside of these is that loading them with the thread takes more time. The advantage is that they can generally take up more thread and the thread is firmly kept in place (while most bobbin shuttles I have tested tend to loosen up with time). I have a preference for simple shuttles without hook, but those with the hook are useful if you’re traveling, so you don’t have to think about where did you put that crochet hook.

Remember that if you opt for a shuttle without hook, you will need a separate crochet hook - go for the tiniest you can find (not sure about the gauge sizes in the US but in Europe that would be like a 1,25-1,75 mm one)

Shuttles with bobbin

Example: Aerlit, Dreamlit by Handy Hands

These are very handy because the loading of the thread is very fast. They all come with hooks (even those from other brands I have seen). Downside is as said above, the bobbin tends to loosen with time. I suppose this is not happening with the Dreamlit that has a different mechanism but I haven’t had a chance to test that one (it looks great so I hope to get one soon)

Threads

When you start, you can use a thin crochet thread (for a 1,75 mm hook) just to test it out. But most crochet threads I have tested are not as good as thread specifically made for lace so if you like it you should switch to tatting thread. Some people use polyester-based thread - it’s very cheap and comes in very big bobbins but I haven’t found one I like so I stick with my two favorite brands - DMC and Lizbeth. These are not cheap, but the quality is very high.

I’m not an expert in DMC sizes because I have used it less often but as far as Lizbeth is concerned you could start with the largest size (gauge 10) and then go smaller as you become more confident. The smallest size is 80 and I confess it’s a PAIN to work with. I usually work with 20 or 40 for doilies and jewelry.

More tools

You will also need a crochet hook (as said above, the tiniest you can find), scissors, and possibly a beading needle (I find it’s the cleanest way to hide thread ends). If you’re into jewelry you’ll also need beads and various jewelry-making tools like clamps and the various types of connecting pieces.

Where to find stuff

I guess it depends on where you live. If you’re in the US you can find the shuttles and the Lizbeth thread at Handy Hands. I’m in Germany and we used to have a nice shop selling tatting stuff but unfortunately they closed, so I have to buy them from other European shops like Perles and Co and Hobby Perline that ship to Germany for a reasonable price. If you’re in Italy there’s also Spazio Ricamo that has a lot of threads. These are just some shops I know and there are for sure many more.

The ultimate question: shuttle or needle

Since I’m there I’ll also say something about shuttle vs needle tatting. I’m obviously a shuttle tatter but I actually started with needle tatting like many others.

Needle tatting is less scary at first and very quick to learn, but I think I would never switch back so I’d recommend learning to use the shuttle right from the start. You can start even with a DIY cardboard shuttle at zero costs, while you would need to buy a set of needles if you wanted to start with that. Also one shuttle fits all sizes of thread, and you can make bigger projects while tatting with big amounts of thread with the needle is cumbersome. I think some patterns like the two-shuttle designs are also impossible to do with the needle but I might be wrong.

So I loved Magi-Nation when I was a kid. Lived and breathed it. Spent soooooo many hours and sooooo much money on the card game, got as many friends as I possibly could roped into it, the works. It was just a delight to me.

For the one in the photos, I used a size C/2.75 mm hook.

You can make the plush bigger or smaller by changing the hook size and the yarn size as you see fit.

I'm not using a specific named stitch when sewing the pieces together. If you like using specific named stitches, you'll probably end up using whip stitches and/or ladder stitches, but if you're already familiar with those terms, you're experienced enough to figure this all out anyway.

First we're going to make the big orange mushroom cap. This is pretty simple. Use orange yarn.

White Ring

For the white ring around the body, use white yarn. Make a magic ring with 6 sc (so MR 6), then just SC around for approximately 52 rounds, until the tube that you make is long enough to wrap all the way around the orange cap. Depending on how tight your stitches are and so on, this may be a little more or a little less than 52 rounds, but that's what it was for me. As you go, periodically measure the tube against the orange cap to see when it's going to fit around nicely. You're going to sew it to the cap roughly at where the back loop only round was, but this can be adjusted as you see fit.

Fasten off at the end with a long tail for sewing; you can finish with a slip stitch or an invisible finish but it won't really matter since you're sewing it to itself to make a loop.

When I made mine, I sewed it to the body right after making it. You might choose to also leave this step for last, so that you have more room to work on the underside. I don't think that will make a huge difference.

There's no need to stuff the ring unless you REALLY want to, but I wouldn't.

Foot (make four)

Use dark brown yarn. The toenails can be embroidered on or needle-felted on; use beige or gray material. I suppose you could even cut them out of premade felt or premade fabric and glue or sew them on if that's what you really want; point is, they're not directly part of the crocheting process. In the photos, mine are needle-felted on. (If you have a felting needle, it's very easy; just stab your felting fiber into the right approximate shape, position it on the doll, and stab it repeatedly until it holds itself in place.)

Chain 5, turn. Sc 3, 3 together in next sc so you're moving around to the opposite side of the chain row, skip 1, sc 2, inc (10) (The skip 1 part is always a little weird for me because I didn't realize I was doing it until the third or fourth foot, but as long as you end up with 10 stitches in your row, you're good. The goal is to be stitching in the round but to make it kind of oblong instead of a perfect circle, hence why we're using a chain instead of a magic ring.)

NOTE: After the first or second of these, if you're using cardboard to stiffen the feet to make it stand up more easily, this is a good time to trace and cut out the cardboard (I used two layers; do what feels right for the materials you have on hand) and stick it inside the foot. Make sure you tuck in the initial end of the yarn before you add the cardboard or else doing so will get annoying.

8. Sc, dec, sc 3, dec, sc 3, dec, sc 3, dec, sc 2 (16)

NOTE: If you're embroidering (rather than needle felting) the toenails, now is a good time to do that. If you're needle felting them, wait until after you've stuffed the foot.

9. Sc around (16)

NOTE: Speaking of stuffing the foot, this is when I started doing that, then stuff as you go until you start combining the feet in row 12.

10. (sc 2, dec)  x4 (12)

11. Sc around (12). For the first three feet, fasten off. For the fourth foot, don't cut the yarn yet.

12. Once you have all four feet (with toenails, however you're choosing to do them), set them together on your workspace clustered in a square. Each foot should slope slightly (i.e., they're not perfectly symmetrical); position them so that the narrower parts are all together in the center.

12 cont. Pin the feet in place to each other to hold them steady; make sure the bottoms are all flat. I left the pins in until after I finished sewing them to the underside. Go back to your active loop and crochet around the four feet so they're all together in one round.

12 cont. You don't really need to count specific numbers of stitches at this point; a few of the existing stitches aren't going to get used because you're just going around the outsides. See the picture. SC around for one full round and end your round near but not at a corner (if your feet are in a square and you imagine the square as a clock, it's at about 10:00 or 2:00; see picture). Our goal now is to make one end of this taller so that the cap ends up peeking up at an angle.

13. Mark where you ended and then chain 1 and turn. Going in the opposite direction from before, sc across until you get to roughly the mirrored position. See diagram. (Diagram assumes right-handed crochet. For left-handed crochet, mirror it, i.e., you're going counterclockwise instead of clockwise when you go "backwards.")

14. Mark where you ended. Chain 1 and turn. Sc all the way around the entire thing now. When you're at the "shelf" between row 12 and the raised part of row 13+, do a decrease down (or up) the side; see photo. Go a stitch or two past where you started (so that you've done the decrease up the shelf as well as down it) and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Underside Use buff (or tan/beige/taupe/etc.) yarn. Our goal here is to make a really floppy circle, so we're going to use a huge number of increases. This absolutely will not lay flat, and it isn't supposed to! It's specifically supposed to be wrinkly and saggy, as is the eventual fate of all of our bottoms. 1. MR 6 2. Inc 6 (12) 3. Inc 12 (24) 4. Inc 24 (48) 5. (Sc 1, inc) around (72) 6. (sc 1, inc) around (108) 7. (sc 17, inc) around (114) 8. (sc 18, inc) around (120) 9. (sc 9, inc) around (132). Fasten off. If you want to be fancy and leave a long tail for sewing the underside to the orange cap, you absolutely can do that. I tried to do that and eventually ended up cutting it off because it kept getting in the way as I was sewing the feet to the underside, so if you tend to have problems with yarn getting tangled when you sew, maybe leave it short.

Assembly • Position the feet (which should be a single unit now) in the center of the underside and stitch them on. Because of the raised portion from rows 13-14, the underside will be kind of at an angle. Be careful to keep the feet centered; because the underside is so floppy, it's really easy to accidentally get shifted around if you're not careful. Make sure that the feet all stand mostly flat on the ground but that the underside is tilted.

• Position the body on the underside and use a lot of pins to hold it in place. Basically, the places where you put pins will end up getting stitched to the body and the places between the pins will be big floppy wrinkles that fold in on themselves.

The front of the doll is the part where the cap is raised (where you built the extra "shelf" on the feet). Attach safety eyes to the underside facing the front. Make sure that when you re-pin this, the eyes are mostly flat and not folded into a wrinkle.

• Sew the underside to the cap, and sew the wrinkles to themselves so that you don't have any openings. If you haven't done so already, sew the white ring to the orange cap (in the photos, I did that first, but I can understand why you might choose otherwise).

Beatrice Build Log - The Elliptical Hoop Skirt, AKA I suffered for this silhouette

Do you ever just make something hard for a minor reason? That's what I ended up doing with this cosplay.

So, the silhouette. If you look at the anime reference (check my previous post), it definitely pulls to the back. But it's also a pretty obvious bell shape to me in the visual novel reference (which is my main reference), moreso than a-line. I see a lot of a-line skirts for Beatrice (and after struggling through this, and all patterning of pieces going forward), I know why. It's a lot easier to make an a-line hoop skirt, or even a bell-shaped one, and just pull it back with a bum pad or ties.

But, I got it into my head that I wanted to make an elliptical hoop skirt, so make it I did.

The Petticoat and Ruched Skirt / The Chemise and Corset

Don't pay too much attention to the numbers here, because they changed. This was my process of building the hoop skirt, though. Using the Cosplay Book of Ballgowns as a reference (namely for the amount to add and subtract to make sure that the hoops were high enough off of the floor), I determined how evenly everything should be spaced. That part actually didn't change. Neither did that bottom hoop measurement, which I based off of proportions that I determined using nifegun (with the visual novel reference).

When I figured out the spacing, I made the 3 hoops in the bag first, because I had a pretty good idea on what was going to happen with those. I used the bag to get the support tapes positioned - for those, I used doubled grosgrain ribbon.

I spent a lot of time looking at pictures of elliptical hoop skirts, and generally, they all have a quilted semicircle placed at the center back, which contains the vast majority of the support ribbons and pulls the hoop to the back. I patterned one out based on the approximate size I thought it should be, quilted it for strength, and evenly spaced out the ribbons.

The cotton was a lucky find at Joann Fabric - it looks faded and antiqued, and is black with roses on it.... perfect for Beatrice.

Here's where the numbers started to change. I cut the 3 open hoops (all hoops were made of 10 mm hoop steel), and made some adjustments on their size based on how large they could be relative to each other. Then, I started to clip the closed hoops in place.

These red noodles are actually twill tape that I dyed burgundy. This was a totally unnecessary step but I wanted my Enoby Darkness Dementia Raven Way hoop skirt, dammit. Maybe I should say that I "died" it, heh.

So, all the hoops were put in the casing, and the casing was slid onto the proper rung of the grosgrain tapes - I sewed those spots after measuring and marking and pinning and making sure it all worked in terms of lining up.

Once all of the hoops were sized and pinned in place on the ribbons, I sewed them all by hand in place over the course of several evenings.

You can see how it pulls towards the back! The final thing I did, which I haven't gotten pictures of yet, was adding ribbon loops to the open hoops at the edges, and threading ribbon at the back of said open hoops. This allows me to adjust where the hoops are sitting on my body and fixes that awkward transition you can see in the above picture between the closed and open hoops, since the open hoops are now sitting where they should be. The ribbon ties are a pretty common feature of elliptical hoop skirts in order to keep them properly supported and balanced.

The hoop skirt sits very parallel to the floor while on my dress form (actually I think it tilts up very slightly at the front), while on me, it tilts up at the back. I've got... a lot of natural padding at the butt especially compared to the flat dress form, so I anticipated that, and am accounting for it in making the two outermost skirts. I'm still very happy with this crinoline.

Next post will discuss construction of the petticoat and ruched skirt. I'm finished with the petticoat and currently working on the ruching part of the ruched skirt. Hopefully, I'll have that done the weekend after next, since I will be out of town at AWA this coming weekend.

Stickers are vinyl and waterproof, but I will only be offering square or rectangular options (since I don't own a cricut nor outsource creation to anyone else).

Any print or photocard can be backed with high quality paper or laminated with clear holographic paper.

Hi There, so pleased you are enjoying watching progress on the big blue hexie star quilt. I am using 2 cm hexies with a good 9-10 mm seam allowance, I prefer a generous seam on the back. We use metric here in New Zealand and I cut my templates with a store bought punch thus the metric measure.

DIY LoZ Sheikah Slate

Thought it's about time I shared the birthday gift I made for my bestie @tsukinoshinjiu! It's a custom Sheikah Slate! So I'm gonna share how I made it... (finished images at the bottom!)

First I started by looking at in-game references for it and getting a general feel of what it looks like, what pieces I'd need, and what the general shape would be like. I wanted it to be a special box of sorts, so they could hide little treasures or letters...

After getting the general feel of the colors and shapes I'd need as well as what would be sunken and what would pop out, I looked for some measurements I could base myself off of. Luckily I found a Reddit post of someone who'd already done the hard work for me.

I tweaked the sizes slightly (namely putting them in a measurement system I could actually understand) then opened up SketchUp to model it out and simulate my rough idea.

I really wanted to stay true to the rounded corners, so I went for a layered technique, using 3 mm wooden slates.

So I created a "base" piece, a "body" piece, and a "lid" piece. In the end, it ended up being 5 body pieces, 1 base, and 1 lid. (And no, I didn't have access to 6 mm wood, otherwise, I'd simply done 2 6mm pieces for the body instead) In total, the depth was roughly 2.2 cm

Once that was ready, I laid out a simple graphic for my cutter. In it you can see the measurements:

Height: 25,33 cm (~10 in.)

Width: 15,33 cm (6 in.)

Depth: 2.2 cm (0.8 in.)

(yes I named it 6mm, I mistyped dw about it) Once that was done, I looked at the front again and opened up Illustrator to make the vector path for the cutter. I had barely used Illustrator before so I had to learn while I was doing it *sweats* but I got it done, and here's what it looks like. I saved it as .eps (vector) so the cutter could read it.

Once that was done, all that was left was to wait for the cutter to be done with my pieces....

Then I immediately started painting and organizing! Decided to start with something small, so I chose the little triangles, I took them apart and painted each piece individually, then with some scotch tape I held them together and put them aside. Next I painted the main piece as well as the lid, body, and base. I glued the layers first then painted them, same with the rest. The handle was especially fun to do and I think it turned out especially pretty. Always working my way up to the smaller colors. Once all those pieces were painted I glued them in place.

The little lines really tested my pulse *sweats again* I don't think they're perfect, but I tried my best (the circle around the eye is especially scuffed)

Not pictured (because I forgor) I made little stops on the bottom of the lid so it could stay in place and be used as a box. I used some thick 2mm hard grey board to make 4 little rounded stops and glued them to the bottom of the lid. When I was done, I sprayed the entire thing in a shiny finisher!

The inside had a special engraving since I'd originally wanted to throw in the Korok Bookmark I'd made for them in there as a surprise, but since this gift had lagged behind for a while, the bookmark was sent ahead of time along with the other goodies I'd prepared for their bday.

Once it was all ready I threw in some other goodies inside and packaged it for the mail! They got it last week and the reaction was...

In the end, the slate arrived a little later than I had wanted, but it got there in one place and the unboxing video I got from them was priceless hehehe.

So yea, that was my adventure making a custom Sheikah Slate as a bday gift! If I eventually remake it, I'll try to make it look even closer to the original.

And if anyone would like to try their hand at making it, go ahead! If there's interest for the files I'll find a way to make them available as well.

Age: Miocene (Burdigalian), about 16.3–16.5 million years ago

Where found: Tagay Formation, Irkutsk Oblast, Russia

How much is known: A partial left coracoid (shoulder bone).

Notes: T. vetusta was a phasianid, a group that includes chickens, partridges, and turkeys. In particular, it appears to have been closely related to Afro-Eurasian quails, such as those in the genus Coturnix. Two slightly younger species of Tologuica had previously been named from the Miocene of Mongolia, T. aurorae and T. karhui. Also I don't get why people keep saying it's an ~unsolved mystery~ it's William Afton right? Am I just as confused as everyone in the FNAF community rn?

I've heard multiple theories about the midnight motorist, one that the Mustard man is in fact william afton and one that hes someone else entirely, and to that i say: both can be right!

we know that in ITP the rabbit isnt *exactly* william afton, but moreso a reflection of him and the horrors that happened at the freddy fazbears pizzeria years before. which would explain why the sprite is a decidedly yellow colour instead of Wills usual purple, and the fact that the rabbit disguises itself as oswalds father also explaining why the sprite is in the shape of a human man instead of a man sized rabbit.

The car being driven by the Mustard man in the game is a dark purple, in the ITP novel the colour of oswalds car isnt specified but in the game it is red </3 a possible explanation for this being that the car looks purple because its dark which is slightly less believable than the alternative, being the colour of the car is more symbolic 😌 calling back to William afton, which isnt completely unprecedented in the fnafverse generally if something is purple its expected to be connected the aftons in some way(for instance michael aftons corpse sprite being purple etc.)

Now.... Jr's. what could this possibly mean for into the pit? i need you to remember there are multiple endings in the game, ill come back to this in a second, in the game files the lore parts of the midnight motorist is called Later That Night. implying this is something we havent seen yet or possibly a different perspective on something we have seen- SO this COULD be either a) a continuation of something we saw in ITP or b) something entirely new. which brings me back to Jr's- you can remember the multiple game endings now<33

Finally, the scene of the home. with the Mustard man identified as the Rabbit, the person sitting in front of the tv would be oswalds mother. we know from ITP based on how many times its mentioned and such that family tv time is SPECIFICALLY very important for them, so the fact we see her here now alone is very telling.

the Rabbit goes to the other room, the door is closed and cannot be opened, this is the only other room in the home that is accessible.(remember that oswald is an only child) the messages that play out when repeatedly going to the door are in reference to the Act revealed a little later but also symbolic of the thematic relevance of child abuse/abusive and controlling parental figures and dynamics in ITP. at the back of the house the window to the locked room is broken and there are footprints leading into the surrounding woods that being a persons footprints and larger set of what seem to be animatronic footprints, paired with the message "he ran off to that place again, when he gets back he'll be sorry" <- this is the Rabbit referring to the pit, and the boys eventual fate.

Lastly the empty lot and the mound are then symbolic of Jeffs Pizza an empty shadow of the former freddy fazbears pizzeria establishment, the pit itself, and what ended up happening to oswald. giving dual imagery for a rabbit burrow and an unmarked grave. Oswald is dead.

To wrap this all up, a summary: The Mustard man is the ITP Rabbit in a human disguise, after the events of the ITP novel oswalds dad is dead, cue the drive through the woods. at the house oswalds mother sits at the family television alone, talking to ghosts.(realistically you would probably hear your sons rooms window breaking regardless of whether or not its raining *which is still a possibility but just hear me out okay lol*, by the time the rabbit gets back to the home oswald is already dead and his mother knows it) oswalds rooms door is closed and cannot be open, he is not there. at the other end of the house there are a broken window and footprints, that of a child and an animatronic. at the empty lot there is a mound of dirt, cue the bad ending of ITP, the rabbit kills oswald, its over. the rabbit is no longer allowed in the nearby establishments, and most likely just like William afton before him nothing was done about the deaths.(also note the callback to the theme of a broken community and communal isolation in ITP, the community just goes about their normal activities *notice the decently full parking lot at Jr's* simply shunning the rabbit and wishing to forget *now think about the 'dont make this harder than it has to be line, this specific community has seen this tragedy before*)

Chapter 222 Trivia (Part 1)

Fun fact: this chapter is from issue #2 of WSJ's 2022 collection!

The Apollo mission had spacesuits tailor-made to each astronaut, but these days it's easier to use interchangeable parts and switch them out according to the size of the wearer, rather than having the whole suit fitted.

However, the gloves are always custom-sized for dexterity.

Vinyl fabric doesn't seem to have ever been used as part of a spacesuit, however spandex and nylon have, especially in the inner layers.

Outer layers include Teflon, Kevlar, and aluminized Mylar.

It's possible that rather than being used for the fabric, the vinyl is used for the suit's interior cooling tube system, and the aluminum is used for the Mylar rather than for the exterior metal parts, as pure aluminum is easily scratched.

You probably recognize this panel from the end of chapter 219. The only difference is Ryusui's head has been swapped with Stanley's.

Japanese doesn't have a "V" sound, which is why Chrome says "by" rather than "vi" or "vy".

Generally English words used in Japanese make this switch, for example "violin" becoming "baiorin" due to the lacking of "V" and "L" sounds.

This building may be where they're assembling the SENKU 11 rocket, however in this first panel it appears completed, but in later ones it's still under construction.

The robot maid request is most likely a reference to "Me and Roboco", another manga currently being published in Weekly Shonen Jump alongside Dr. Stone. It's a comedy series that follows a powerful-but-clumsy maid robot in a grade schooler's service.

The vacuum tubes are back in the form of cavity magnetrons. These produce the microwaves that bounce around the microwaves' interior body.
