Something that I really, really love about DS is the way that morality is portrayed.

Most shows have a good side and a bad side. Most MEDIA has a good guy and a bad guy. I think in a lot of shows, there would have been one twist: Viktor Albright is the good guy, and Camilla Thomas is the bad guy. It would have been simple, it would have been easy, and Daniel would have done exactly what Viktor wanted because it would have aligned with his own interests as one of the good guys.

But the show doesn’t do that. Instead, we’re handed a question of morality. We’re given a lesson in good vs evil that lots of media doesn’t foray into. Life isn’t always ABOUT good vs evil. There are grey areas. Sometimes, you’re so focused on one element that you believe makes you good that you wrap back around to being evil, or to being some other closer-to-negative-than-positive thing that doesn’t have a better name.

Viktor Albright isn’t a bad guy. He isn’t a good guy. He’s not really an anti-hero, either. He’s a man who, when faced with a broken system, has turned to anarchy for the masses and control for himself as a solution. (Sound familiar?) He has an answer for what to do now, but he has failed to come up with an answer for the after. If we abolish the bureau, Daniel asks him, what will happen next? And Viktor doesn’t really have a plan. (Sound familiar?)

It’s a really cleverly-done and WELL-done message to send to a young generation of people inheriting so many problems of the generations that have come before. Abolishing the current systems in place isn’t a bad thing on its own, but there needs to be a plan. Something is always going to come after. It’s up to you (it’s up to Daniel Spellbound) to decide if that thing will lead to more chaos, or if that thing will be constructive.

Trying to keep a running tally of what we know re: character ages… I feel like that image of the guy with the conspiracy board who looks very haggard standing in front of it lol.

Daniel is “old enough to drive and be on his own” (assuming 18y)

Lucy is “slightly older than Daniel” (assuming 19y)

Hoagie is “not old enough to drive yet” (torn btwn assuming 15y and 17y? He seems young to me personally so I’m inclined to assume he’s closer to 15y or 16y but I’ve been wrong before)

Bixby is “an adult” (idk how old she is she has a babyface)

Jayce found the Cyclops Eye “before he was 20” and was locked in the Soul Box for 5 years (assuming he didn’t age in the Soul Box, I’ve put him around 20-21y. If he DID age in the Soul Box, he’s probably closer to 25y)

Shak “was a kid” the last time she was inside of Jayce’s hideout, which means she considered herself a “kid” 5-6 years prior, since Jayce DISAPPEARED 5 years ago but who knows how long he was out adventuring before that. I’m also assuming Shak and Hoagie are a similar age based on the way they interact. Shak has been confirmed younger than Hoagie. (Assuming she’s around 14y)

Burden is ???? old enough to know Daniel’s father (and Viktor Albright?) from before Daniel was born/when Daniel was a young kid, and “knows more about Daniel’s father” than what has been stated in the show so far. (I don’t have an estimate for him but he’s a Grown-Ass Adult™)

Elyse was probably around the same age as Lucy (assuming 19y) if they went to the Dowser Academy together.

Viktor is ???? years old! He was originally supposed to be hundreds of years old (“a sprightly 147 year old man”) and passing himself off as his son’s son’s son (Viktor Albright IV) but that didn’t necessarily make it into the final edit of the show so? He’s probably older than a human should be able to be tho. (Assuming at LEAST over 100y)

That’s all I have for now but I’ll probably update the info if I make any other connections !

If Viktor Albright is over 100 yrs old does that mean Daniel’s dad was ALSO over 100 yrs old before he died*? Much to consider.

*died or disappeared or whatever happened to him bc frankly it feels more mysterious than what the show has stated so far

Was there any humanity left inside of Jayce by the time he was set into the makeshift coffer?

Personally, I’m inclined to say… it’s complicated. I think Jayce WAS in there somewhere, uncorrupted by the Dread Magic that turned him into a half-demon. I also think that the part of him that was demonic was also SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than the human part of him. I’m not sure exactly how Dread Magic takes hold of someone and corrupts them, or if Jayce was turned into a demon before or during his stay in the Soul Box. (Jayce seems to imply that it happened during his time in the Soul Box, when they’re all talking about it at first. It’s later implied that the glitchy Dread Magic that takes over other beings comes specifically from the demonic corruption, so idk the timeline there. I also don’t hold abt 95% of what Jayce said to be gospel.) But it does seem to be the Dread Magic/corruption controlling Jayce, especially near the end when we see that control slip twice in the last ep (once just after Daniel tosses Hoagie+Lucy off a cliff, and once when he begs Daniel for help just before shattering the coffer).

What is interesting to me is that Jayce ended up going into the makeshift coffer. My assumption had been that they would pull the corruption/Dread Magic out of him with the ritual that they were performing, which would leave human!Jayce free to see the error of his ways and apologise to everyone as necessary. I didn’t expect to see him get dragged into the makeshift coffer, and the fact that he DID seems to imply that whatever corrupted him/turned him Dread did so in a way that was irreversible.

Which… brings us to Burden. IF Jayce’s demonic transformation didn’t happen until he’d been sealed in the Soul Box for 5 years, then Burden might still be salvageable (albeit Definitely An Antagonist that our heroes might not want to save). IF the demonic transformation was a direct and immediate result of Jayce’s dealings with Dread Magic… We might not have seen the last of glitchy Dread corruption powers, is what I’m saying.
