Happy 78th birthday to King Carl XVI Gustaf!

Born on April 30th 1946, Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus acceded to the throne of Sweden upon the death of his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, on 15 September 1973.

Carl XVI Gustaf became Sweden's crown prince and heir apparent to the throne at the age of four following his great-grandfather's death. Carl Gustaf's father, Prince Gustaf Adolf, died in a plane crash in 1947 when Carl Gustaf was only nine month old. He is the longest-reigning monarch in Swedish history, having surpassed King Magnus IV's reign of 44 years and 222 days on 26 April 2018.

He married Silvia Sommerlath on 19 June 1976 and they have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Duchess of Vastergotland, Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Varmland and Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland.

Today marks the 43rd birthday of Her Royal Highness Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland.

Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée was born on 14 July 1977 at Karolinska Hospital, Solna, Sweden. She is the eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

Victoria is wearing the following tiaras, clockwise: the Baden Fringe, the Connaught Diamond Tiara, the Napoleonic Cut-steel Tiara, and the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik.

The name Margaretha had come from the Swedish Royal Family. Margaretha’s sister Astrid became Queen of Belgians and gave her own daughter, Joseph Charlotte then name Marguerite, a French version of Margaretha. From there the name traveled to Luxembourg when Josephine Charlotte’s second daughter bore the name Margaretha.

Margaretha was the eldest daughter of Prince Carl of Sweden, Duke of Vastergotland and Princess Ingeborg of Denmark. Margaretha was the aunt to King Harald V of Norway, King Baudouin II of Belgium, King Albert II of Belgium, and Josephine Charlotte, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. She was a prominent figure in Sweden because of her marriage and the fact that many Swedish consorts died young. 

Princess Margaretha had made one of the last dynastic marriages in Europe in the 20th century. Between Margareth’s marriage in 1982 and her nephew Princess Sebastien and her great-niece Princess Marie-Caroline of Liechtenstein in 2021 there were no dynastic marriages between two reigning houses. It was important to notes that these two marriages were between the Liechtenstein princely family and Luxembourgish Grand Ducal Family.
