I’ve been enjoying this lady who reviews video games, consoles, etc. Occasionally she also reviews manga, and since I’ve seen some people say they want to get into Witch Hat Atelier, I recommend her spoiler-free review, including a look at the first chapter.

one thing she touches on that I love about WHA is that the minutiae of how witchcraft works doesn’t overshadow the storytelling. it doesn’t bog the writing down with hard and fast rules; in fact creativity is a major running theme. magic serves to supplement Shirahama’s understanding of relationships, emotions, and social norms.

she compares this to the way food tells a story in Dungeon Meshi! and I agree! at a glance Dunmeshi may be a slice-of-life fantasy with an almost encyclopedic interest in food, and in part, it is. but Kui understands that hunting and eating are intrinsically connected to ecology and human relationships. in much the same way, WHA is in part an encyclopedia of magic spells—but who gets to create them? who gets to use them? and how?

WHA is a coming-of-age story that appeals to a younger audience, but it feels timeless and classic in that way. if you like Dunmeshi and how it gets really into a specific aspect of worldbuilding you’d probably also like WHA. an anime adaptation is happening for that, too, but I can’t recommend reading the manga enough—the art is gorgeous and the way Shirahama absolutely plays around with paneling is god tier.

84 - Laios rescues Lycion, reconnects with Kabru Shuro and Namari, demon shares its goals and sides square up to contain the dungeon, monsters stop to let Laios and co through to see Marcille

85 - Laios and co find Falin in the tower, Marcille drowning in desires but the strongest one is for DRAMA (Chilchuck’s family)

86 - monsters will not listen to Marcille’s stop, sealing the bookhand demon, How do I stop being a dungeon lord?, Laios offers to defeat the demon and resurrects Mithrun on that alone so he signs off on eating Falin

Sweet/Savory/Spicy: It used to be sweet, but in the past year or so, my taste buds have refused to accept spicy foods. I've even had to forgo some of my favorite chips flavors (goodbye, Lays magic masala. You were there for me when no one else was). I think I've lost my Indian badge. I'm more of a cheese, corn, paneer, and mushroom guy now. Is that 'savory'?

Relationship status: Single.

Current Obsession: My fanfic series, the Records of Heroes Past. It follows the PC cast of Star Wars: the Old Republic, plus additional OCs I added in. It retells the stories, and expands on them. I'm currently at Book 5: Limbo, which focuses on Lana Beniko during the 5 year timeskip after KOTFE Chapter 1. I've put my heart and soul into that garbage, and I can't stop now. Once it's done, I might quit everything.

Last thing I googled: Koth Melan. He's a character from Shadows of the Empire; a Bothan spymaster who is instrumental in securing the Death Star II intel for the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

I said in the tags of another post that I should have just skipped the parts of the dunmeshi manga that I've already watched in the anime but then I would have missed out on the namari, kiki, and kaka content in chapter 22! So I'm glad I didn't!

this whole page is not in the anime and it's a shame because it seems that grumpy mcpants doesn't travel anywhere without his wife :3 (in the anime it seemed like he came alone) and his thoughts on the dungeon and its effects on the island are also interesting

in the manga this happens before Kiki says good morning while in the anime Namari asks about her axe after Kiki says good morning (and she doesn't ask where she is lol)

I'm not sure I approve of this change because in the anime it implies that even after finding out where she is, she was still worried about her stuff, while in the manga, once she realised it was Kiki, she was no longer worried about her axe and instead inquired about the time

it's important because it sets up the later events (the resurrection) which is a pretty important thing in the story so I feel it's a shame it wasn't included in the anime.

they kinda just end up tagging along in the anime without this being pointed out but I love how the two of them had NO clue where she's going or why and went anyway

the person crying (because someone they care about has not yet been retrieved from the dungeon?) and Kaka's reaction (to the smell?) are also not in the anime

this is really cool! I don't believe we get this sort of info on the island in the anime (so far). the only thing we learn is that the dungeon is on an island, governed by that lord of the island tall-man fella grumpy mcpants works for, and that it used to belong to the dwarves and elves.

I also love how it's just called the island now lmfao

side note, aren't dwarves and elves also considered humans alongside the tall-men?
