Bibha Sen (Konkona) teaches in Bethune College and lives by herself in a North Calcutta house that would certainly be better sold than maintained. Bimala (Deepika) loves coming home on vacations, but has spent maybe a total of ten months in Calcutta in as many years, and most of that was when Ma was ill the last time. She even still thinks of it as Calcutta, not Kolkata. The city won’t run away because they no longer have the house, Didi will have a flat and she can always crash there. Besides, she could use the extra cash; Pune’s an expensive city to move to, and she and Ilesh (Ranveer) are saving up for their upcoming nuptials.

The wildcard is their baby brother Barun (Vicky), who hasn’t properly lived in the city for five years, but is always on the verge of returning for good. Secretive, stubborn, and sentimental, Barun insists on reviving Durga Puja at home over Bibha and Bimala’s objections about financial, emotional, and physical costs, and then uses the Puja as an excuse to put off taking a decision about the house. The only one to whom he’s willing to speak is Ilesh, even though the two have never met that the sisters know of.

If Barun’s great secret is that he’s gay, Ilesh’s is of a different sort altogether. Bimala knows he’s bi, which is true; she knows he’s been faithful, which is also true. She knows he had anonymous and pseudonymous hook-ups right before they started dating three years ago, because she was one of those hook-ups that turned into a date, then two, then the best relationship of his life. She doesn’t know, because he didn’t know till Bibha-di introduced them, that he’d slept with Barun.

It’s Sasthi; they have a week to sort out family, fidelity, and finances.

'Pet-friendly' themed Durga Puja organised by North Kolkata's Bidhan Sarani Atlas Club

Sep 19, 2022 02:20 IST Kolkata (West Bengal) , September 19 (Always First): As the festival of Durga Puja is nearing, people are coming ahead with one creative idea after the other. A similar example was seen in North Kolkata's Bidhan Sarani Atlas Club which came up with the first of its kind 'Pet-friendly' Puja Pandal. In the idol, the 'Asur' was replaced by two street dogs who were seen praying for shelter before Maa Durga, showcasing the theme of 'Shelter for pets'. Also, the 'Asur' has been depicted riding a motorcycle and crushing the small puppies under its wheel. It represents those people, who hate pets and torture street dogs.

The Secretary of Bidhan Sarani Atlas Club, Biswajit Ghosh told ANI, how they decided to go on with this theme despite fearing controversy. "We know that we have to face controversy over the idol but earlier the traditional Durga Idol used to have ten hands but now it has also changed. This social issue is important to show how street dogs are being treated. This year we have received the Cultural Heritage Award from UNESCO," said secretary Biswajit Ghosh. The 10-day festival marks the worship of Goddess Durga. Months before the festival, artisanal workshops sculpt idols of Durga and her children (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik and Ganesh) using unfired clay. The festival marks its beginning on the day of Mahalaya when the ritual of 'pran pratistha' is done by painting the eyes of the goddess idol. Sasthi, Saptami, Ashtami...every day the festival has its own significance and set of rituals. The celebrations culminate on the tenth day known as Vijaya Dashami when the idols are immersed in water bodies from where the clay was sourced. This year Durga Puja begins on October 1 with Maha Shashti and will end on October 5 with Maha Dasami. The significance of Durga Puja goes beyond religion and is revered as the celebration of compassion, brotherhood, humanity, art and culture. About Durga Puja

Durga Puja, also called Durgotsava, is an annual Hindu festival in the Indian subcontinent that is hed to honour the goddess Durga. It is a ten-day festival, of which the last five are typically special and an annual holiday in regions such as West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Odisha and Tripura where it is particularly popular. Celebrated during September-October, it is a multi-day festival celebrated with great pomp and show. In the contemporary era, the importance of Durga Puja is as much as a social festival as a religious one wherever it is observed.

Durga Puja festival marks the battle of goddess Durga with the shape-shifting, deceptive and powerful buffalo demon Mahishasura, and her emerging victorious. Thus, the festival epitomises the victory of good over evil.

The Durga Puja festival dates coincide with Vijayadashami (Dussehra) observed by other traditions of Hinduism, where the Ram Lila is enacted — the victory of Rama is marked and effigies of demon Ravana are burnt instead.

The primary goddess revered during Durga Puja is Durga, but her stage and celebrations feature other major deities of Hinduism such as goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth, prosperity), Saraswati(goddess of knowledge and music), Ganesha (god of good beginnings) and Kartikeya (god of war). The latter two are considered to be children of Durga (Parvati). The Hindu god Shiva, as Durga's husband, is also revered during this festival.

It is said that during this time, the goddess Durga has come with her children to visit her mother’s place. The festival begins on the first day with Mahalaya, marking Durga's advent in her battle against evil. The mantras start early in the morning on this day and everyone has either turned up the radio to full volume, or have already visited the temples themselves.

Starting with the sixth day (Sasthi), the goddess is welcomed. And the festival formally opens and celebrations begin in elaborately decorated temples and pandals hosting the statues. Lakshmi and Saraswati are revered on the following days. The festival ends of the tenth day of Vijaya Dashami, when with drum beats of music and chants, Shakta Hindu communities start a procession carrying the colorful clay statues to a river or ocean and immerse them, as a form of goodbye and her return to divine cosmos and Mount Kailash. She finally returns to her husband. The general surrounding turns pensive and tears can be seen in the eyes of many.

The festival is an old tradition of Hinduism, though it is unclear how and in which century the festival began. Surviving manuscripts from the 14th century provide guidelines for Durga puja, while historical records suggest royalty and wealthy families were sponsoring major Durga Puja public festivities since at least the 16th century. The prominence of Durga Puja increased during the British Raj in its provinces of Bengal and Assam.
