One of my friends gave me a book that accompanied an exhibition of Rembrandt’s portraits. Some of the portraits were tiny etchings, barely the size of a stamp. I was impressed by how well he was able to achieve such a good likeness at such a small scale. Not long after receiving the book, one of my clients purchased one of my Durham School rugby prints. Her son had actually played in the match captured in the print. She asked me to draw a portrait of her son next to the number of the print. Inspired by Rembrandt, I drew it only slightly larger than a second class stamp using a charcoal pencil with a very sharp point and a magnifying glass!
