There are 1.66 million young people (aged 15-29) in South Korea who can’t find a job or aren’t working for other reasons even after graduating or dropping out of their final level of schooling, a government survey finds — and 400,000 of those young people are just idling away the time.
These figures appeared in the youth supplement to the May 2020 Economically Active Population Survey, released by Statistics Korea on July 22. According to the survey, 35% of young graduates and dropouts (1,600,000 out of 4,787,000) are unemployed. This figure was 120,000 higher than the same month last year, representing the highest level since record-keeping began in 2007.
When asked about the length of unemployment, 57.5% of unemployed youth said they’d been out of a job for less than a year, up 1.6 points from last year, while 16.9% said they’d been jobless for 1-2 years, down 1.3 points. Longer unemployment periods saw modest declines, with 8.8% jobless for 2-3 years (down 0.3 points) and 16.8% jobless for 3 or more years (down 0.1 points).
The most common activity of unemployed youth was “vocational training and employment exam preparation,” reported by 630,000 (38%). The second most common activity was “just passing the time,” reported by 397,000 (23.9%), while 236,000 (14.2%) said “job hunting” and 158,000 (9.5%) said “raising children and doing housework.”
The share of unemployed youth in vocational training and employment exam preparation fell 0.8 points from last year, while the portion just passing the time was up by 2.3 points. Statistics Korea said there are more idle youth this year because of the COVID-19 outbreak, which has led to the cancellation of employment exams..
The survey found that 3,127,000 graduates and dropouts are employed, down 168,000 from last year. A large percentage of young people are employed in the following sectors: business and the personal and public service sectors (41%), wholesale, retail, F&B, and hospitality (25.2%), and manufacturing (16.1%).

Media industries & agency
Horkheimer and Adorno put forth the argument that the culture industry is a monopolistic influence that dictates what is disseminated (sometimes false) which in turn shapes culture, and that culture is increasingly commoditized. As said in the article of the influence of the culture industry:
“That is the triumph of advertising in the culture industry: the compulsive imitation by consumers of cultural commodities which, at the same time, they recognize as false.”
In the period that the authors wrote the article, media and culture were mainly disseminated from a top-down linear manner, where consumers just consume. However, over the past decade, the growth of social media platforms has enabled the proliferation of user-generated content, breaking boundaries between consumers and producers as Deuze argues.
For this blog post, I will be discussing agency and the extent of influence of various stakeholders on culture, taking the stance that Horkheimer and Adorno’s argument remains valid today to a certain extent.
In the past decade, the K-beauty wave has been of significant influence in many Asian countries, with the growth of Korean beauty brands including Sulwhasoo on the higher end to Etude House and Innisfree. This phenomenon was driven by the growth of K-pop, where many young girls and boys who appear on television portray flawless skin, manicured from head to toe. The ideal beauty type pounces into consumers' faces from every angle on advertisements of such stars on television, billboards and, social media platforms. This has influenced consumers all around the world to purchase goods and services to attain such beauty standards that the k-pop industry has created.

From 2015-2019, South Korea became the world's fourth-largest exporter (US$5 billion) of beauty products. In the plastic surgery business, South Korea is considered the “plastic surgery capital” with over 600 clinics in Seoul.[1] Plastic surgery has inherently become part of the culture and even are given as gifts to high school students. The spending on k-pop entertainment, k-pop endorsed beauty products, and beauty services, benefit the rich and big conglomerates called Chaebols, which account for 84% of South Korea's GDP.[2]
Additionally, the k-pop culture is one that deceives consumers to think that such beauty standards are the reality, creating an unattainable goal, which creates a cycle for consumers to constantly pay for beauty services such as liposuction, plastic surgery, and others.
Here, one might argue that, unlike what Horkheimer and Adorno discuss, audiences are not passive and can create content and hence influence culture. Looking at the k-pop culture, we would have to conclude that audiences although are not passive but are unlikely to influence culture, and instead propagate the culture initiated by the ones in power. For example, fan cams are “basically free advertising — fansites are constantly releasing high-quality idol-related content online, and they aren’t being paid to do so. [They're] beneficial for idols as it increases media recognition” according to an article by Cardiff University.[3] These fans continue to support and propagate the growth of the k-pop culture and such content are used by the conglomerates to further their business goals, a mediatization of the advertising industry.
In summary, even though there seems to be increased user-generated content and the blurring of boundaries between consumers and producers, the K-wave phenomena support Horkheimer and Adorno’s argument, whereby the ultimate force that shapes the cultural norm are the ones with power and capital.
Despite this example, other cases where we witness the power and influence coming from consumers instead of the monopolies would be the Reddit GameStop case. The retail investors garnered sufficient support and strength, of about 8 million users on Reddit, to create an impact on the stock market with the stock price surging up more than 800%[4], demonstrating a mediatization of the stock markets.[5] This also has influenced the culture industry, whereby according to The verge, there are 4 movies and a TV show on this GameStop saga.[6] In this era of crowd-sourcing, we must not be-little the power of “crowd-movements” on platforms.

Established in 1925, Jipyeong Brewery is one of the oldest currently running breweries in Korea. The brewery survived despite the harsh alcohol taxes passed during Japanese occupation, as well the rice wine ban passed during World War 2., and has been owned by the same family for the past 60 years. Unlike many buildings of its time, which were built in a purely Japanese style, this building incorporates aspects of the traditional Korean hanok.
