Ever After High Switched Destiny AU

Okay so I’ve been reading the books and watching the series (haven’t completely finished them yet so bare with me) and I have a theory/AU.

So we know you can’t choose your destiny, that’s the whole thing right? But we see Poppy and Holly O’Hair (the twins) and they thought Holly was the eldest so she was suppose to be the next Rapunzel (and she liked that) and Poppy just wanted to find her own legacy. However, as it turns out, Poppy is the eldest but neither of them wants to switch their positions so they keep it a secret and we are made to assume the Book of Legends will give Holly the Rapunzel destiny anyways.

Also even though people can take a good guess which Charming will be the next prince to each story (e.g Daring supposedly being Apple’s prince), it’s not certain (e.g. we’re all pretty sure Darling is Apple’s ‘prince’ and Daring is the prince/beast from Beauty and the Beast which is fitting for their personalities).

If the Rapunzel sisters can “switch fates” but the Charming siblings supposedly can’t, it must mean that it’s chosen by personality/whoever fits best.

Not to mention the Red Riding Hood/Bad Wolf sisters.

All this is to say that my theory is that not everyone’s destinies will be what people expect, it’s more who’s more suited for the role.

I know there’s already a theory that Apple and Raven were switched at birth but my AU is that their respective parents are in fact their parents BUT their destinies are switched!

So Apple White is the next Evil Queen and Raven Queen is the next Snow White. (Although I also really love the Darling Charming and Apple White duo for their destinies).

This fits with their respective personalities I think - Apple always wanting to force things to go her way even releasing the Evil Queen to get what she wants, and Raven who just wants peace and choice.

I think my favorite part about rewatching Ever After High as an adult is now that I've had more life experience, I've found that I've gained some new perspective on the Rebel vs Royal conflict.

Because while I'll always identify with the Rebels, and also recognize that many Royals are extremely elitist and to some extent, self entitled, I'm beginning to sympathize and understand their perspective a little more now.

For example, Apple White is the paragon of the perfect princess. She's smart, beautiful, and mostly a rule follower. But, I realize that there's probably a lot of pressure to maintain this image, and a lot of hard work that must be done for the glamour and shiny "happily ever after".

Although it can be argued that Apple has the easiest destiny out of all of them, I think I understand why she's so adamant about following destinies, especially if you consider that in the books, she had a traumatizing near-death experience of almost drowning in the well. Her story was her safety net because life is so uncertain. At any moment, she could fall into a well again and die, but if Apple followed her story, at least she is certain of her future. Ever since she was born, society told her that she'll be secure, safe, and live happily for the rest of her life if she just signs the Storybook and play out her story.

Raven choosing to rebel against her destiny really frightened Apple, because now, her future is uncertain. She has no idea how the rest of her life will play out now that Raven chose not to sign, and that's really valid.

However, if it wasn't for Raven, then so many other people would have been stuck with a fate they've been unfairly dealt with. Now that Raven proved they can choose their own destiny, it opened up the chance for people to carve their own path and rewrite their story in a way that fits them best.

It was such an interesting dilemma because both sides are valid in their own ways. It's really such a shame the show ended so abruptly and was never continued because a lot of these ideas had so much potential. The concepts of Royals vs Rebels were already great in the show and books, but imagine how truly great it would've been if the writers were allowed to continue the story and expand more into the conflict- like really digging deep into how more characters felt about following tradition vs rewriting their stories and carving their own path for themselves.
