CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS | 1st World PhD Workshop | ASCAAD and CAAD Organizations
The 1st World PhD Workshop, organized by ASCAAD and its international CAAD sibling organizations (eCAADe, ACADIA, SIGraDi, and CAADRIA), introduces a unique opportunity for PhD students to present and discuss their dissertation proposals in the area of computer aided architectural design (CAAD). The objective of the workshop is to stimulate interaction and dialogue between PhD students and more experienced researchers, and to foster cross-continent collaboration among PhD students with similar research interests.
ELIGIBILITY
ASCAAD is looking for 3 outstanding PhD candidates to participate in this event. Priority will be given to PhD students pursuing their studies in educational institutions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Applicants should have an accepted PhD dissertation proposal in its early stages by the time of application. Selected participants will receive a complimentary ASCAAD membership for 2021.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants are required to submit a proposal briefly outlining their accepted dissertation research. Proposals should clearly describe the research problem, significance, and methods. University affiliation, and the names of the author and advisor(s) should be clearly stated in the proposal. Proposals should be between 1000 -1500 words, excluding title, author name, and references. Low-res images (up to 4 figures) and captions are allowed and should be embedded in the proposal.
REVIEW PROCESS
The review process will involve primarily the quality of both the content of the research proposal and academic writing. Approved proposals will receive feedback in the form of written comments which should be considered by the authors and resubmitted for final approval. The final submission should include a revised proposal and a pre-recorded video presentation. Presentations and discussions will be in English.
IMPORTANT DATES
Submission Deadline: October 9, 2020
Confirmation of Acceptance: October 4, 2020
Revised Submission Deadline: November 13, 2020
Workshop dates: December 7-9, 2020

VoxelCO - Playing with Collaborative Objects Long Edit VoxelCO explores the potential of playing with collaborative objects in real, augmented and mixed realities, proposing an architecture of socially augmented fuzzy formations. To support engaging with collaborative objects, the multi-player platform application VoxelCO was developed. A cross platform App that allows to collaboratively design aggregated voxel formations on PC and Mobile devices. Furthermore it’s a platform to explore the potential of social augmented reality to interact with real and virtual objects and people. Rather than focusing on high precision, that HMD’s could provide for augmented reality, VoxelCO is aimed to be highly accessible through developing it for widely diffused mobile devices. To engage with the objects on multiple realities, different playgrounds were introduces: digital-, augmented- and real playgrounds. To play the game, players start the VoxelCO App and connect to the ‘Digital Playground’. Once players are Online they can instantiate Voxels to a shared persistent digital playground. Together they can aggregate voxel formations, save and share them. To further engage more with the voxel formations, as well as to get a feeling of scale, resolution and density, players can explore their design in augmented reality in real scale on their mobile devices. They can start a new design in a collaborative session at the ‘Augmented Playground’, where multiple players can instantiate in real-time new voxels to the shared playground to explore their spacial implications and qualities. To further investigate the potentials of VoxelCO, metal wire-cubes were used as building blocks to test the socially aggregated voxel formations at the ‘Real Playground’. Through collaborative play, a group of 20 students designed with VoxelCO the case study project: VoxelStage.
