My city drowned again yesterday, in the second "1000 year" flood in two years. I am heartbroken and furious in equal measure. Ellicott City has historically weathered many devastating floods, but these last few have been of a new breed. Our Governor, Larry Hogan, and our County Executive, Allan Kittleman, had both focused a considerable effort to undermine and repeal the so called “rain tax,” which is used to support stormwater management projects. Land development above the valley has exacerbated the situation, and a short moratorium on construction did little to ameliorate the problem. Human-made climate change is also a factor, as more and more devastating storms will come, without even a name like Lee or Agnes. We can recover, but we need a commitment from our lawmakers to support effective and comprehensive stormwater management solutions! Ellicott City is my home and has been my family’s home for generations. I love our little city. #ECSTRONG

Celebrating Memory on Memorial Day
I forgot it was Memorial Day for a second. How ironic! Memory is not one my strengths, but it took on a special significance today. I'm watching a live stream of my hometown getting washed away for the second time in 2 years. Elliott City, MD: That's where I went to my first homecoming, where I had my first open mic, where I stayed up late sucking straws at Greater Maryland's only decent bars. I'll always remember the way that place was, even when it becomes something else.
youtube
The other thing I want to remember is Dylan Meyer, a comedian who just passed away. I ran into him at open mics and always saw his name popping up in the Baltimore comedy scene's infamous Facebook debates, but I never got to enjoy him personally. Luckily memory isn't an objective recording of events, it's a series of stories we tell ourselves, and you all told some great stories about Dylan. Now I feel like I know him too.
It's hard to know what the purpose of this whole shabang is, when cities and amazing comedians can wash away in the blink of an eye. But something endures. Those fucking memories. When I lost my dad, my cousin, my grandmother, my god parents, my friends, when I was forced to pack up and leave my home year after year growing up, I realized that you not only carry people and places with you, you carry them inside of you. They become you. Even people you've never met. That imprint will LITERALLY be carried on to the next generation, and the next, and the next, until we're all half robot/half alien from centuries of interstellar interbreeding. That means these people and places are still REAL, still LIVING, and they'll never stop. That's what keeps me optimistic. Everything we do matters, and it always will.

Got one of the amazing stickers for Historic Ellicott City support that the 501st had made! So glad to have such awesome support in town. You guys rock! Btw, all the proceeds for these stickers go to make a wish as well. Can't beat the level of outreach the 501st does.

You would think that with Historic Ellicott City being such a photogenic place that it would be easy to, you know, photograph. The biggest problems we had was the fact that the town is 1, always busy, and 2, very compact. Everything is on top of everything else. I was still able to come away with a few good shots though. It's not that you *can't* swim further upstream from Daniels Dam; it's just that if you run into any trouble, ain't nobody coming for you. You better go up there with good swimming friends or something because ... read the sign. And I'm assuming by the previous picture, the sign at the bottom of the dam, that they don't want you going in the water 300 feet upstream of the dam either. Best to just not go in the water here at all. Just do like I do -- admire it and take pictures.⠀ . . .⠀ @marylanddnr ⠀ . . .⠀ #Maryland #MarylandWaterways #MarylandRivers #river #Patapsco #PatapscoRiver #EllicottCity #ECStrong #PatapscoSP #discovermaryland #visitmd #MDinFocus #YesMaryland⠀ . . .⠀ #50mm f2.8 http://bit.ly/2QwOhHn

As life does to all of us, I have been silent for far too long due to a hectic schedule.  I have been traveling, working, and just plain trying to see where life will lead next.  Sometimes, you need to take a moment and enjoy what is in front of you.
Last evening I saw a friend and she looked exhausted.  I suggest we go to a local wine bar called Pure Wine Cafe Friday evening (tonight) to unwind and relax, just simply have fun.  After a bottle of Riesling, a platter of meats and cheese, and olive oil and bread, we wrapped up our evening with the above goodness...Nutella Waffles with strawberries.
Nutella always makes me think of my first trip to Germany in 2004.  I’d never experienced anything like it and immediately fell in love.  Now I order it when ever I can.
But the waffles are completely besides the point.  Sometimes you need to take a moment and escape from your current life and enjoy the ideas you would like for your life.  We discussed our loves of travel and how we wanted to live abroad.  It doesn’t matter how old you get, having dreams gives you something to strive for.
Oh, my thoughts on Pure Wine Cafe (https://www.purewinecafe.com)?  Love, love, love this place.  They have an extensive wine, beer, and cocktail list, so you are sure to find something.  The food is excellent, or at least what I’ve had.  I recommend sharing the meat and cheese plate and some olive oil and bread with friends.  The olive oil had some balsamic in it which sweetens it.  So yummy.  The best part...beside the delicious wine...helping out the Ellicott City, MD community after their flood this year.  I’ve lived in the area for a little over two years and this is the second time Ellicott City has flooded.  The historic downtown area (which is what flooded twice now), has fantastic shops, museums, and restaurants.  If you are anywhere near the Baltimore area, I recommend stopping by Ellicott City.

In case you were even thinking about swimming up near Daniels Dam, don't. They seem to be very insistent that you do not do so. Given the way the water was running when I was up there, I wouldn't. Then again, I wouldn't swim anywhere in the Patapsco at any time, anyway. ⠀ . . .⠀ @marylanddnr ⠀ . . .⠀ #Maryland #MarylandWaterways #MarylandRivers #river #Patapsco #PatapscoRiver #EllicottCity #ECStrong #PatapscoSP #discovermaryland ⠀ . . .⠀ #50mm #f5.0⠀ . . . http://bit.ly/2CbDbmh
