“Nothing comforts and centers me more than making art with the women in my life. Regardless of creative disposition, this world is often maddening for us. This is an age of endless opportunities for crippling envy, thanks to our social media timelines, so in this way it’s more important than ever to practice putting those petty jealousies aside; and appreciate a fellow woman’s loveliness without questioning your own. Once you’re able to consistently do this, magical things fall into place. Moments of understanding and tenderness appear where they once passed you by, complimenting your life and your work. Nurturing that kind of art: pieces of unguarded femininity and manifold loveliness, the rare magic you can conjure with collaborators when you respect them unabashedly and trust them purely.  This is a way in which creativity and knowledge blossom, preserved while casting aside pointless bitterness. More so, there is something to be said about women who aren’t stingy with their expertise. That acumen becomes even more powerful when shared, honed with new and deeper meaning”. - Eden Tijerina

Marissa Nadler’s new clip for ‘Lemon Queen’ is much sweeter than the name suggests…
Filmed at in Umbria, Italy, the singer lives out all of our rustic wanderlust dreams by wandering around a gorgeous 15th Century estate surrounded by lush greenery, all shot with a grainy filter for that nostalgic feel.
Accompanying her fever dream with ethereal guitars and ghostly harmonies, Nadler finds beauty in her isolation, though it’s not enough to sooth her weary soul as she finds herself consumed by sadness.
As Nadler explains (via Our Culture):
‘‘Lemon Queen’ is the name of a sunflower variety that grows as tall as 8 feet, thriving in full sun […] The sunflower points its head directly towards its life force, growing tall and upright. Perennial flowers and trees watch entire generations come and go, season after season, sometimes the only constant in a sea of change. To me there’s something very beautiful about that. This song isn’t about a sunflower, of course. It’s an extremely personal and first-person narrative, and the Lemon Queen is there through it all.’
Director Eden Tijerina adds:
‘When I thought of what I might contribute to one of Marissa’s songs, I recalled all the feelings she evoked when I was a troubled teen, playing songs of hers over and over on a battle-scarred iPod. Music was a companion I could rely on, one that provided inspiration and encouragement I couldn’t find anywhere else, as well as a running chronicle to everything I did. Now, as an adult, I realize the depth of her artistry: her uncanny knack for reaching those tender, unexamined areas in your heart you can’t seem to locate. In making this video for Marissa, I wanted to recreate the spaces I used my favourite artists to access, a world like the ones I escaped to after school, watching music videos on a computer at the library, daydreaming that one day I could learn to express myself in such a fulfilling way.’
Marissa Nadler’s The Path of the Clouds is out now.
