It is also with AppleWorks that I made my first attempts at photo manipulation. I used photos from an encyclopedia we had on CD-ROM and manipulate them by tinkering them and copying and pasting small pieces here and there. Then I printed my montages and paste them onto the comics pages.

My montages were mainly used for space scenery. (1999 - 2000 in collaboration with my sister)

This software really pushed me to be creative to get what I wanted out of it. I had even managed the tour de force of pasting a white lineart over a photo.

(2000 - 2001)

In the absence of layers, I had to work on 2 files in parallel and with the lasso select tool. And then one day, our first scanner finally arrived home! There the serious things could begin! I was able to stop trying to make drawings with the mouse and use AppleWorks to put in color drawings made with the traditional way. So I was able to go further from the end of nineties. It obviously started with Saint Seiya. x) (You can always click on the images to enlarge them to full size.)

I loved the Aquarius saint. He was my favorite character from Saint Seiya. ^^ (2000 - 2001, this way)

At the beginning I was just doing solid colors, but as I experimented with the features and learned how to combine them, I ended up getting more and more advanced renderings.

Aoshi Shinomori from Kenshin and Ashram from Record of Lodoss War. These two were also my favorites characters at one time. (Between 2004 and 2006)

If you have enlarged the images you must have noticed that the line is particularly crenellated. There was no antialiasing, no layer system with opacity levels, no tolerance threshold for the filling tool. So it had to be black, or white, but not in between. As a result, AppleWorks was not really adapted to work on drawings with small details, hatching or heavily detailled backgrounds...

I tried anyway. :p These last 4 examples I think I made them between 2004 and 2006. The comics pages come from the first version of the Nécrotech project which is currently in a dormant state (but which I intend to resume one day). You'll notice on the first image of the last page some effects whose style stands out a bit from the rest. It's normal, I made them in another old painting software, Art Dabbler, but this is another story. :p In 2007, I got tired of suffering, I started to use The Gimp, in 2008 I bought my first graphics tablet, in 2009 I embarked on the Photoshop adventure and you know the rest: I sold my soul to Promarkers and Clip Studio Paint. And then there are days like that, we fall back into childhood. (Click on the image to see it at full size and distinguish the pixel patterns. I know, I repeat myself, but the devil is in the details. :p )

Last week, I decided to make a theme of the Drink'N'Draw from A to Z with AppleWorks to see what I could get out of it with 15 more years of experience in drawing and illustration. 8D With some tips you can get a pretty amazing result! I am happy with the result, especially the colors. It wasn't done without pain. The feature I wanted to take full advantage of (customizing color patterns) is buggy on the Windows version of the software, so I had to set up a Mac OS X Snow Leopard virtual machine to be able to do the finishing touches. What an adventure! In any case, AppleWorks is always well adapted to make pixel art and this experience has allowed me to learn new things applicable in recent and professional softwares. I had never really tried pixel art, which I love, by apprehension of the execution time. I think I found the trigger to get serious about it. I will explore it further. :D Well, well, well! But in fact, calculating gradient patterns for pixel art with shaders shouldn't be complicated. I think I will add such an effect in Péguy ! :D

You've read it right! You can still install and use AppleWorks in 2021! :D

Windows

I did the test with Windows 8.1 on my Cintiq Companion tablet from Wacom, and in the comments it seems that it also works very well on Windows 10. To do this you will first install the latest version of QuickTime 7 which you can find on this page. You double click on the installer and you do next, next, next... Even when you are asked if you have a product key. It is not mandatory and useless for our needs. Then you go to this page and download the first file. You unzip the file and double click on the installer, then same procedure as before: next, next, next... You can do retro digital painting now! :D

Mac OS X

Apple computers have changed so much in 20 years that it is now impossible or at least very complicated to run the original programs on today's machines. The manipulation therefore consists in using the Windows version with the Wine emulator. If I had no problem with the procedure, it may seem a bit complicated for non-technical profiles so I simply propose you to download the final application I created myself via this link on Google Drive. You just have to download it, unzip it (with a double click) and launch it. If you're a computer geek and want to get a version of AppleWorks without the color pattern bug, you can get the .dmg here and install it in a Snow Leopard virtual machine.

Be reasonable about the size of your files. This is an old software that will have trouble supporting surfaces exceeding 2000px by 2000px. There is a way to cheat a bit, it is by creating a vector drawing file and creating a bitmap drawing surface inside.

The Filmography of Christopher Nolan - My Personal Ranking

Well, since I have watched all of Christopher Nolan’s films released so far, I feel I can give my honest, personal ranking of his filmography, from Best to Worst, with a brief summation of my thoughts about each film.

So, without further ado, my personal rankings:

1. The Dark Knight (2008):

Simply put, The Dark Knight is a masterpiece. Blending aspects of the police drama, with superhero elements, it reinvented the genre of the superhero film, showing just how intense and mature the genre could be, without loosing sight of the fundamental aspects of the genre. Add to that an excellent pace, stellar performances, and memorably epic action sequences, and you’ve got what is easily Nolan’s best film.

2. Insomnia (2002):

Nolan’s sole excursion into a pure crime thriller (although it is a genre he has dabbled in many times), Insomnia proves to be an insular, yet rewarding film, often becoming stronger upon each rewatch. It’s told with confidence, has a great handle on noir styled dialogue, and probably the last truly good Al Pacino performance to date, and a wonderfully creepy turn by Robin Williams, and you’ve got a solid, unpretentious entry into the noir genre that is sorely underrated.

3. Batman Begins (2005):

The first “psychological” superhero film, Batman Begins helped solidify the critical respect that the comic book film genre had steadily been gaining since Sam Rami’s Spider-Man in 2002. It also restored Batman to the badassery he deserved, and was the first film to really tackle the nuance of Batman’s psychology this directly. It’s pacing might be a bit wonky, and Katie Holmes functions as a glaring miscast, and it might still have the trappings of set up for a larger epic, but Batman Begins is still a remarkably solid, and well made film, and one that remains consistently entertaining.

4. Following (1998):

A twitchy, paranoid film, Following was Nolan’s first, and probably his most lean and mean. It clocks in at a mere ninety minutes, and obviously shows the limits of his shoestring budget, but Nolan makes it work, crafting a sharp, startlingly dark and intense film.

5. The Prestige (2006):

A misanthropic, sociopathic film that obsesses over the darkest aspects of human nature, The Prestige is a remarkable work from a technical standpoint, but from a storytelling standpoint collapses due to the monstrously selfish, unlikable, drastically underwritten yet impeccably acted characters, and Nolan’s emotionally detached direction. With no one to root for, and an ending that bends the story into a Mobus strip of logic, it’s a film that could have been a true masterpiece, but ended up falling for it’s own illusions. It looks good, but has the soul of a sociopath.

6. Inception (2010):

A bloated wordy, visual stylish film that lacks any semblance of heart, Inception dazzles from a technical standpoint, but lacks in the story department. Once the awe inspiring visuals of the dreamscapes fade from memory, you’re left with characters that function little more as props, and have little in the way of nuance or motivation, with the exception of Leonardo DiCaprio’s main character. But besides DiCaprio, everyone else is just there as window dressing, and the film ends up overstaying it’s two and a half hour running time, with piles of exposition, all to explain something that makes a rather distressing amount of sense from the visuals alone. If you want to see the world of dreams explored on film, watch Satoshi Kon’s dazzling, no-holds barred fantasy Paprika, which inspired this film anyways.

7. The Dark Knight Rises (2012):

An attempt to tie the themes and plot lines of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight together with one singular epic, The Dark Knight Rises ends up as an overblown, terminally boring elephant of a film, with piles of long winded monologues, underwritten characters, and a plot that ends up being mind numbingly foolish. There are flashes of greatness, but they evaporate almost instantaneously, leaving behind a lumbering, half asleep slog of a film.

8. Memento (2000):

All style, but with no substance, Memento is a film so concerned with telling its story in an unorthodox manner, that it forgets to make it a story worth telling in the first place. The moment the central twist is revealed, the entire film, regardless of all the fancy editing or camera work, falls apart like a house of cards.

9. Interstellar (2014):

Reeking of overblown, pretentious and high-minded self indulgence, Interstellar tries to be the next 2001: A Space Odyssey, but instead comes across as a cloying, emotionally manipulative slog of unlikable people, and idiot plotting, coupled with a central motif of science being some sort of strange religion, while mocking or belittling anybody who doesn’t drink the film’s brand of hyper humanist, science worshiping cool aide. It treats the audience like children, and no matter how cool the visuals may be, if I don’t like the characters, then you’ve failed utterly.

A new chapter

MIRANDA PEAKE TALKS TAKING THE HELM AT CHENER BOOKS AND WHY THE SHOP’S FAMOUS “NO CARDS, NO WRAPPING PAPER” POLICY STILL STANDS

Taking over a much-loved business can be tricky. It’s even more daunting when the business in question was run by one man for 40 years.

But that was the challenge that Miranda Peake – poet, artist and bookseller – grasped with both hands just seven months ago.

She is the relatively new owner of independent bookshop Chener Books, which was founded and run by local bookselling hero John Kennedy since 1978. It moved to its current location on Lordship Lane in 1983.

“At points I had doubts and thought, ‘Am I taking on too much?’ but it was good to think that John had made this work for 40 years and it would be so brilliant to carry that on,” says Miranda.

“And also people have so much affection for the shop. People in East Dulwich and the wider community really wanted it to continue.”

She took the helm in October last year. “It went well from the word go, which is really fortunate. I was really lucky to take over before Christmas, which is the busiest time for bookselling, and that made a huge difference.”

Long-term residents of East Dulwich might have known Miranda from Chener anyway. A resident of East Dulwich and Camberwell since she graduated in the late Nineties, she first worked in the shop for two years in the early 2000s.

Previously she had studied fine art and then for an MA, while working in other bookshops including Waterstone’s and the now-closed Borders on Oxford Street. She balanced working part-time at Chener with her career as an artist.

“I really loved it, especially after working in such large bookshops in town, and John was so generous,” she says. “He kind of completely gave over responsibility for ordering and day-to-day management to the people who worked in the shop.”

Eventually Miranda moved careers into arts administration, but it seemed that Chener Books had not yet forgotten her.

She had already started experimenting with writing, and eventually decided to leave her job to dedicate her time to it. She began an MA in creative writing a couple of years ago, “and that’s when books came back in the picture”, she recalls.

Miranda had popped into Chener to pay John a visit – and fortuitously he was looking for part-time staff. “I came full circle really!”

John was set to retire in summer 2018, but sadly passed away before he got a chance to enjoy his retirement. John and Miranda had already discussed her taking on the bookshop, and after he died, she began talking to his family about the possibility.

The sense of continuity was inspiring. “I think that was part of why I really wanted to do it, because John had done this amazing thing of keeping it running for 40 years,” she says. “I knew that he very much wanted the shop to continue.”

Over the past six months, Miranda has been digging through the – often surprising – books that are already on the shelves. “You realise how much independent bookshops are shaped by the people who own them,” she says.

“One of the things I love about the shop is that it is full of oddities that people have ordered through the 40 years of its life. Weird pockets of stuff like women murderers, all these books about torture. Somebody who worked here once must have loved these bizarre subjects. So it still has a lot of eccentricities in the stock.”

She adds: “[I love] working out what sells best and what people are interested in. It’s so enjoyable choosing stock, choosing things you hope will sell, and if they do it’s really wonderful.”

As a poet and member of the Hornet Press poetry collective, she has a particular passion for poetry. She has moved the poetry titles to a more prominent section, which has really boosted sales and attracted poetry-lovers to the shop.

Other top sellers have included the Michelle Obama memoir at Christmas, and less mainstream hits such as titles by independent press Fitzcarraldo Editions. “It makes me happy when we sell things from a small press, or you’re able to give a small press space in the shop. I think that’s really important.”

She has swapped the large central table for more moveable furniture to enable Chener to put on events, the most recent of which was with Christopher Mallory, a diplomat during the Cold War.

But one thing that has remained the same is the dedicated room for children’s books, and also – vitally – John’s “no cards, no wrapping paper” policy. She laughs when I ask about her comment in a previous edition of this paper that she would not be selling anything other than books.

Mentioning her support for nearby card shops, she adds: “[If I did that] I think John would probably come down and tell me off in person. I think it would be really out of character with the shop and everything that John built the shop to be.”

It’s testament to south-east London that there are a number of well-supported indie bookshops. “A lot of people come in and say, ‘I’d rather order a book through you than through Amazon’,” she says.

She feels similarly positive about ebooks. “People do still use Kindles of course, but I think the novelty has worn off, and my sense is that people use them when they have to, when they’re convenient, but the default is that people would buy a book. On both of those counts I feel like it’s a relatively good moment for bookshops.”

At first she found the switch from full-time office work to being on her own in the shop five days a week (it is also open at the weekends) “a bit lonely, but once you get to know people, now I’m just chatting away all day! One of the nicest things is that people come in and chat. It’s really nice that mums and dads bring their kids in.”

She adds: “I feel really at home here, even more so now I have this shop. I feel really embedded in the area.”

Artprice: Sculpture, the Medium of Tomorrow

thierry Ehrmann: “Apart from commemorative statues that can be found in nearly all the towns and cities in the Western world and elsewhere, big cities have always been fond of large and monumental sculptures in public spaces. In New York there are works by Robert Indiana, Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet and Pablo Picasso, while in Paris you can find works by César, Daniel Buren… and soon, Jeff Koons.”

Indeed, considering the number of works that have occupied public places in major cities, either temporarily or permanently, it is not surprising that some have elicited controversy… and sometimes, quite heated. In recent years, France – and Paris in particular – has been the setting for a number of art controversies such as those surrounding Paul McCarthy’s Tree (2014) on the Place Vendome, Anish Kapoor’s Dirty Corner (2015) at Versailles and Joep Van Lieshout’s Domestikator (2017) in front of the Pompidou Center.

The sheer size of these monumental works often adds to their “shock effect” as they dominate the local urban or landscaped environments. Arman’s sculpture in Beirut, Espoir de paix (1995), a 32-meter-high concrete tower containing dozens of real tanks, is a good example.

There are more and more spaces devoted to sculpture around the world: permanent exhibition sites, such as the Gibbs Farm in New Zealand or Naoshima and Teshima Islands in Japan, as well as annual events such as Frieze Sculpture held every autumn in London.

Thanks to these new opportunities in places designed specifically for the purpose, sculpture is definitively liberating itself from architecture and painting.

Sculpture on the Art Market

Collectors have long been intimidated by a medium that is more complicated to display, store and transport than two-dimensional works. However, between 2003 and 2008, the volume of auction turnover generated by sculptures multiplied 4.5 times. In just five years, worldwide sculpture sales on the secondary market rose from $245 million to $1.1 billion.

Stalled by the financial crisis, sculpture sales immediately recovered and then enjoyed two particularly good years in 2014 and 2015.

Kitsch leads Contemporary sculpture market

On 15 May 2019, one of Jeff Koons’ three 1986 Rabbit sculptures will be offered for sale at Christie’s in New York with an estimated price range of $50 – $70 million. This exceptional 1-meter high stainless steel work (from an edition of 3, plus 1 artist’s proof), is arguably Jeff Koons’ most iconic work, and perhaps Contemporary art’s most iconic work as well (at least insofar as Contemporary means post-modern, conceptual or its less intellectual brother-in-arms, kitsch…).

Six years ago, Jeff Koons became the most expensive living artist on the Art Market with his Balloon Dog (1994-2000). The orange version sold for $58.4 million on 12 November 2013 at Christie’s in New York. It is unlikely that Koons will recover his “most valued living artist” title; to do so, his Rabbit (1986) would have to fetch over $90.3 million, the amount paid for David Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist (1972). However the piece may well revive the Prince of Kitsch’s market, as well as all the Contemporary Art as a whole.

Alberto Giacometti, the undisputed leader

The top three prices ever recorded at auction for sculptures were all hammered for works by Alberto Giacometti. With three results above the $100 million threshold, Giacometti is one of the most expensive artists in history and, without a doubt, the most successful sculptor on the secondary market.

But how did his L’Homme au doigt (1947) reach $141 million at Christie’s New York in May 2015 when there are five other versions of the same work (plus an artist’s proof)? In price terms, sculpture’s reproducibility is often seen as a weak point, but the same characteristic can also be its strength. Because owning a work like L’Homme au doigt (1947) is to share a work with the greatest museums in the world, including the MoMA, the Tate Modern and the Des Moines Art Center.

Brancusi dominates 2018

Measuring just 55 cm high, Constantin Brancusi’s The Sophisticated Girl (Portrait of Nancy Cunard) (1928) was acquired for $71 million on 15 May 2018 at Christie’s in New York, propelling the Franco-Romanian sculptor to the forefront of the global Art Market. It was the year’s best sculpture result and the 8th best Fine Art result in all categories.

In 1927, the “Brancusi versus the United States” trial marked a major turning point in Art History. For the former US Customs Service, Brancusi’s sculptures were not, strictly speaking, artworks… but the trial forced the authorities to broaden the notion of an artwork. Ninety years later, not a shred of doubt remains: Brancusi is celebrated as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The American Supreme Court had just defined the ‘cognitive value’ of a work of art.

Hi, my car insurance covers for liability only and now I have an accident with a big truck. The big truck hit my car from the side. (I live in LA) I dont need Health Care (healthcare.gov) to get insurance like Blue Cross or Anthem right? Why are people paying for healthcare PLUS whatever insurance agency they get like Blue Cross. I currently have NO income, and I havent worked for a year so no taxes lol. I know health care helps with something that involves taxes. I'd like to get insurance and I heard that Medicaid is good for people with no income, but I'm going to have a small income soon. Do I need to contact healthcare.gov or medicaid or coveredca to get insurance with Blue Cross? What do you folks recommend? HELP!!!!! What is the March 31st deadline for? Do I just need to apply by then? And is that deadline for just healthcare/medicaid/coveredca or is it for the actual insurance company like Blue Cross? I'm so confused...
