Alex Ovechkin career goals and rank on NHL all-time scoring list
Tumblr media
Alex Ovechkin continues to charge up the NHL’s all-time goals scored list.
The Capitals captain entered the 2021-22 season sitting on 730 career goals. It put him 164 tallies back of Wayne Gretzky’s chart-topping 894. There have been question marks regarding whether or not he can surpass “The Great One’s” number as “The Great 8” hits the latter years of his career. But, as Gretzky says, he expects him to — and hopes he does — break the all-time record.
NHL POWER RANKINGS: Ovechkin leads surging Capitals
As Ovechkin moves through the record book Sporting News breaks down where he stands and where he’s heading as the march to 895 begins in earnest.
All stats updated on Nov. 8.
NHL’s all-time goals leaders
Over the course of 1,487 NHL games, Wayne Gretzky scored 894 career goals which average out to 0.60 goals per game. By comparison, as of Nov. 8, Ovechkin has 741 goals in 1,209 career games which average out to 0.61.
PLAYER TEAMS GOALS Wayne Gretzky EDM, LAK, STL, NYR 894 Gordie Howe DET, HFD 801 Jaromir Jagr PIT, WSH, NYR, PHI, DAL, BOS, NJD, FLA, CGY 766 Brett Hull CGY, STL, DAL, DET, PHX 741 Alex Ovechkin WSH 741
Alex Ovechkin’s next 10 opponents
Over the course of his career, the team Ovechkin has found the back of the net against the most is the Lightning. He’s faced his former Southeast Division rivals 74 times and has notched 49 goals. The next team on the list is the Jets with 48 goals in just 67 games.
DATE OPPONENT CAREER GOALS (GP/G) Thurs., Nov. 11 at Red Wings 20 goals in 28 games (0.71) Fri., Nov.12 at Blue Jackets 18 goals in 37 games (0.49) Sun., Nov. 14 vs. Penguins 36 goals in 65 games (0.55) Tues., Nov. 16 at Ducks 12 goals in 20 games (0.60) Wed., Nov. 17 at Kings 11 goals in 21 games (0.52) Sat., Nov. 20 at Sharks 12 goals in 22 goals (0.55) Sun., Nov. 21 at Kraken 0 (NHL’s newest franchise) Wed., Nov. 24 vs. Canadiens 33 goals in 50 games (0.66) Fri., Nov. 26 vs. Panthers 40 goals in 66 games (0.61) Sun., Nov. 28 at Hurricanes 43 goals in 81 games (0.53)
Splits provided by Hockey Reference.
Alex Ovechkin’s goals/game by season
If you think, well he’s 36, can he keep producing? Ovechkin is like a fine wine, he’s just getting better with age.
SEASON GP GOALS G/GP 2005-06 81 52 0.64 2006-07 82 46 0.56 2007-08 82 65 0.79 2008-09 79 56 0.71 2009-10 72 50 0.69 2010-11 79 32 0.41 2011-12 78 38 0.49 2012-13 48 32 0.67 2013-14 78 51 0.65 2014-15 81 53 0.65 2015-16 79 50 0.63 2016-17 82 33 0.40 2017-18 82 49 0.60 2018-19 81 51 0.63 2019-20 68 48 0.71 2021 45 24 0.53 2021-22 12 11 0.92
Will Alex Ovechkin pass Wayne Gretzky?
Never say never!
Entering this season, Ovechkin trailed Gretzky by 164 goals. While he’s off to a torrid start, it’s unlikely that he’ll keep finding the back of the net once per game. A reasonable high end might be the 50-goal barrier which he hit most recently in 2018-19, though he did score at a 50-goal pace during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season.
50 goals over an 82-game season checks in at a 0.61 goals per game pace. If he plays every game moving forward — unlikely to say the least — he would need 269 games (as of Nov. 5) to catch Gretzky. That would be sometime during the 2024-25 season.
Of course, if he continues scoring at a blistering pace, he could get there sooner. Ovechkin’s career-high for goals per game is 0.79 which he set way back in 2008-09. At even the rosiest projection, the earliest Ovechkin could catch Gretzky is midway through the 2023-24 season.
It’s impossible to predict health but needless to say, that’s perhaps the biggest factor in assessing the 36-year-old’s chances at becoming the all-time scoring champ.
How many Rocket Richard Trophies has Alex Ovechkin won?
Awarded to the NHL’s top goal scorer by the NHL Board of Governors, the Maurice Richard Trophy, or commonly called the Rocket Richard Trophy, was provided to the NHL by the Montreal Canadiens in honor of the Hall of Famer. Over the course of 18 seasons with the Canadiens, Maurice led the NHL in goals five times, was the first to score 50 in 50 games in 1944-45 and the first-ever 500-goal scorer in the league’s history. He finished his career with 544 goals in 978 games.
The trophy was first handed out following the 1998-99 season to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne who led the NHL with 47 goals.
Ovechkin has captured the trophy a record nine times. He could have won it his rookie year but lost out to the Sharks’ Jonathan Cheechoo by four goals and was a goal short in 2009-10.

Top 100 Keeper League Defensemen – April 2019
Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper leagues – April edition!
I noted this Thursday in the full Top 300 list: As with every year for the last 17 years, my April, May and June adjustments are casual. The July and August editions are my "audit" rankings because, thanks to the Fantasy Guide, every detail of every player within every team is analyzed top to bottom. April? Not so much. I go over every player on my spreadsheet and wipe the slate clean for the season just completed, and I make my best guess – no formulas – at how they will do next year. I tweak the 3YP, I adjust the team offense value (i.e. for Columbus I tweaked it downward because I expect them to lose a lot of offense this summer).
What's left is that the young players improve, the older players slip (Brent Burns). The injured players get a clean slate and move up (Erik Karlsson), the over-achievers of 2018-19 move down. The late-season surges of some promising young players get a bit of a bump. Doing the April rankings are always a lot of fun. My goal is to do my best to get these as close to what I come up with in August after extensive analysis as I can. The players I'm 'way' off on I take it hard. I want to be a savant with this – I want spew out an accurate player value without doing the work (and then prove myself right after doing the work in the summer).
As always, players between +/- 5.0 in the ratings should be considered equal. Click on any player name to be taken to his incredible stats page (with charts, game logs, graphs, fancy stats – everything you need, even customizable date windows you can look at). These rankings, which focus on defensemen, are simply pulled from the overall skater rankings.

Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – April 2019
Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper leagues – April edition!
As with every year for the last 17 years, my April, May and June adjustments are casual.
What's left is that the young players improve, the older players slip. The injured players get a clean slate and move up, the over-achievers of 2018-19 move down.

With goalies being what they are, it's best to only look this season and two beyond. However, this month is the first month to stop looking at this year. The season is over, and at this point fantasy owners are just looking ahead to next year and the year after, as well as long-term upside and the other factors I note below.
The list factors in the projected win total for this season (because in all leagues, W's are king), as well as quality start percentage for this year, quality start percentage next year (projected), the risk factor (injuries), the risk factor (depth chart), and for prospects it factors the wait time as well as upside. As always, go by Tiers when evaluating goaltenders. A goalie from one tier is the same as another. I left actual ratings and rankings in there for the sticklers who want to see it broken down further.
For the rest of the Top 100, visit Goalie Post and click Top 100 Goalies in the menu at the top.
*NEW* I made most of the names below clickable – they link to their goalie profile. Try our new/revamped Compare-a-Goalie tool!
Again (for those who never read the intro) – Rank your goalies by Tiers!
Wednesday I posted the Top 50 fantasy prospect goalies here.

Top 200 Fantasy Hockey Forward Prospects – March 2019
Here are the Top 200 prospects to own in your points-only keeper league – February edition!
As always, players within +/-5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal and at that point are a matter of team needs or personal bias. Players I graduated this month are listed at the bottom. If an obvious player isn't here, then he was graduated in a prior month. You can see all the archived rankings simply by clicking "Hockey Rankings" under the title.

Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper league – March edition!
As always, players within +/-5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal and at that point are a matter of team needs or personal bias. I factor upside, the player's three-year likely peak average (3YP), injury risk, depth chart, team offense, and the current pace for this season. Look for the Top 100 Keeper League Defensemen on Friday morning.

Looking Ahead: Kerfoot Moves To Top Line
All fantasy owners need help in the short term AND the long term. The Looking Ahead feature identifies one player to plug into lineups in the short term, a second to invest in for the long term, a third to bench for the coming week, and a fourth who will struggle to meet expectations for some time. All players discussed are selected based on their upcoming schedule.

Alex Kerfoot, W, Colorado Avalanche (Available in 95 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – With the Avs’ great schedule over the next two weeks, Alex Kerfoot is in a great position to contribute as a fill-in, and should be available in most leagues as he’s only 5% owned.
Kerfoot has been the beneficiary of Colorado splitting up “the Big 3”, as Kerfoot has slid into Gabriel Landeskog’s spot on the top line alongside Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. In his past four games (since the switch), Kerfoot has put up 1G-3A with five shots on net, and has played two full minutes above his season average in those games. While it’s a small sample, Colorado grabbing points in all of those games bodes well for keeping the lines as they are, which means Kerfoot should hold value over the next few games. Beyond the top-line duties, he also slots into the second power-play unit.
The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)
Ryan Donato, W, Minnesota Wild (Available in 83 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – His ownership has already jumped 12% this week on the back of his six points (1G/5A in four games since getting traded to the Wild, but he’s still not owned nearly as much as he should be.
Donato’s playing top power-play minutes with Minnesota although only third line minutes at even strength, but he’s averaging 15:19 since the move, and he’s firing the puck a ton: 23 shot attempts already (5.75/game) with 11 getting to the net (2.75). While Donato’s true shooting talent probably isn’t the 20.1% he hit last year in his rookie campaign with Boston, it’s probably closer to the 12-15% he shot in college and the AHL than the 8.1% he’s hit in his 38 combined games this season.
He’s a prospect with a ton of pedigree given a great opportunity in Minnesota, and is a must-add in keeper leagues, and he should contribute greatly in one-year leagues (especially salary cap ones).
The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)
Anze Kopitar, C, Los Angeles Kings (Owned in 85 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Shooting 13.6% on the year – a full 1% higher than his career average – hasn’t been enough to make Kopitar relevant this season. He’s put up only 17G-27A on the year and is on pace for the second-worst season of his career after his best season last year.
Kopitar’s normally a possession darling but this season has a dismal 46.63% CorsiFor% and has been even worse at home at 44.91%, which is a decent signpost of the slow erosion in the quality of his play – this is a 10% drop over last season. At 31, Kopitar’s best years are behind him, but on a dismal Los Angeles team that’s got nowhere near the star power of earlier seasons, that degradation has happened a lot quicker than expected. He’s still a fantasy asset, but keeper owners should definitely be rid of him and season-long owners should keep him to the side with the light schedule the Kings have upcoming.
The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)
Alex Tuch, W, Vegas Golden Knights (Owned in 35 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – The addition of Mark Stone to the Golden Knights is a great hockey move, but it’s a heavy price for Alex Tuch owners as Tuch’s value has plummeted post-trade. Tuch went from playing on a second line with Paul Stastny and Max Pacioretty (or Brandon Pirri) and top power-play minutes, to the second PP unit and the third line with Cody Eakin and a revolving door of wingers.
In his time away from Stastny at 5v5 (433m without vs. 339m with), Tuch sees a noticeable drop in his shot attempt rate, shot on goal rate, scoring chance rate, and high-danger chance rate – although the on-ice shooting percentage goes up, so his actual GF/60 rate drops slightly. With 24 of Tuch’s 43 points coming with one of Stastny or Pacioretty, his role change is more impactful than for most players. With so many of Vegas’ wingers signed long-term, consider moving Tuch in keepers if you have a late trade deadline.
Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)
Florida – In their past ten games, Florida has scored a whopping 37 goals, and that includes getting shutout by Dallas. Their top-six have been clicking extremely well, and their power play has scored in two of their past three games. The Cats will get to play Carolina, Ottawa, Minnesota and Detroit at home, and Pittsburgh and Boston on the road.
NY Islanders – After dealing with the return of John Tavares, the Islanders get a whack of home games to start off March: Washington, Philadelphia (twice!), Ottawa and Columbus all visit Brooklyn and Long Island, which means four very enticing home games against bad defensive teams. Beyond those five games, the Islanders also take a quick trip to Ottawa, which is another scheduling gift. Lock in the Isles’ big guns and don’t look back.
Colorado – The Avs have scored 23 goals in their past five games since breaking up the big 3. With four wins and an OT loss in those games, and get to face some of the dregs of the NHL. Home games against Detroit and Buffalo are the real highlights, but the Avs will also play Anaheim and Dallas on the road. Beyond those easy pickin’ games, Colorado will also play a road game against San Jose and home to Carolina.
Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)
Los Angeles – In their past five games, the Kings have scored just eight goals, and brought their losing streak to NINE games. Beyond the lack of scoring, which is vaguely expected on a team of Anze Kopitar and a bucket of pucks, the Kings have had trouble defensively as well with 21 goals allowed in those same five games – which rules out any value Jonathan Quick or Jack Campbell would have.
Nashville – The Preds made some strong moves at the deadline in shipping out Kevin Fiala and Ryan Hartman to bring in Mikael Granlund and Wayne Simmonds, but they won’t be seeing much ice time to kick off March. Nashville plays road games at Minnesota, Winnipeg and Anaheim, and home games against Carolina and Minnesota. Wait for some clarity on their line combinations, and wait for their light schedule to clear up.
New Jersey – This is breaking the typical rule of “volume makes a difference”, as the Devils play seven times through the first two weeks of March – this is the most games teams can see in a two-week stretch – but with so many injuries, New Jersey is a glorified AHL team and has next-to-no value. They’re missing Miles Wood, Taylor Hall, Jesper Bratt and Kyle Palmieri and have traded away Brian Boyle and Marcus Johansson, so the only remaining values are Nico Hischier and…Travis Zajac? Blake Coleman? It’s barren. Skip them.

Top 200 Fantasy Prospect Forwards – March 2018
Here are the Top 200 prospect forwards to own your fantasy hockey keeper league – March edition!
Takes into account several aspects – each one is very important and how you prioritize them for your fantasy squad depends on your current needs (long-term, high upside or short-term, NHL-ready, lower ceiling). As always, two players within +/-5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal value and at that point comes down to team needs or personal preference. Below the chart are the prospects I have graduated over the past two months.

Top 100 Keeper League Defensemen – March 2018
Here are the top defensemen to own in your points-only keeper leagues.
As I noted yesterday in the full Top 300 list (here), this is the final list of the season in which we consider this season's help. Beginning in April we look ahead to next season and the two beyond that. As always, two players within +/- 5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal value and at that point should be prioritized based on need and personal bias. You'll notice that players become very close in value to each other the further down the list you go as we get torn with the decision between immediate help but terribly low upside…versus a completely unproven prospect who won't help you this year and possibly not even next, if ever.

Brady Skjei and the Rangers Offer Potential in the Week Ahead
All fantasy owners need help in the short term AND the long term. The Looking Ahead feature identifies one player to plug into lineups in the short term, a second to invest in for the long term, a third to bench for the coming week, and a fourth who will struggle to meet expectations for some time. All players discussed are selected based on their upcoming schedule. Stats in this article updated through February 16th
The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)
Ryan Spooner, C, New York Rangers (Available in 92 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Going with a hot hand, Ryan Spooner has already had a huge impact since getting traded to New York as a second-line winger, putting up five assists (one on the PP), five blocked shots, and three SOG in only two games. Spooner does lose some power play time going from the point on a potent Bruins first unit to the second unit of the Rangers, but at even strength in a small sample the Kevin Hayes/Spooner duo have put up a great scoring chance and high-danger scoring chance rate.
The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)
Brady Skjei, D, New York Rangers (Available in 85 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – With Ryan McDonagh getting injured and subsequently traded to Tampa Bay, there’s a lot of ice time available to the Rangers’ leftovers in John Gilmour, Tony DeAngelo, Neal Pionk, and the one I’m highlighting, Brady Skjei. In his past five games, Skjei has captained the top power-play for the Rags while seeing over 23 minutes per game on average, and has picked up two assists with six shots on goal. In leagues that track peripherals, all that extra ice time has been a boon to Skjei’s value, as he’s picked up an 18 combined hits and blocks.
The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)
Jake Muzzin D, Los Angeles Kings (Owned in 80 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Since Dion Phaneuf has made his way to the Kings, Muzzin’s value has taken a bigger-than-expected hit, losing power play time to Phaneuf on the first unit, and even-strength ice time has taken a dip as well. From February 15th, Muzzin has played 15, 14, 9, 18, 16, 16, 16 and 10 minutes at even strength – less than Phaneuf in every game – and has put up only one assist in that time. He’s still a strong asset for hits and blocks, about three combined per game, but he’s a droppable asset in points-only leagues and can be sat for the foreseeable future in peripheral leagues.
The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)
Danton Heinen, LW, Boston Bruins (Owned in 18 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – For players in deeper one-year leagues or shallow keepers, it’s time to give up on Heinen. After getting healthy scratched for BRIAN GIONTA – which should say something about what the team thinks of Heinen’s value at the moment – Heinen has only topped 15 minutes three times in his past ten games, with one assist. Beyond losing his spot to Gionta, when Heinen does get back in the lineup he’ll still be relegated to PP2 and short minutes in a third- or fourth-line role, and one not nearly effective as the Backes-Riley Nash line he was on before Patrice Bergeron went down.
Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)
Arizona – IF there are any Coyotes fantasy-relevant players left on your roster at this point in the season – and there should be in deeper leagues – now is the time to use them. The Coyotes have six games upcoming in this stretch with only one back-to-back (at Colorado then home to Vancouver), but more importantly is the fact that they get to play Vancouver. Not only do they play the Canucks at home, but the Coyotes also face them in this stretch in Vancouver, on top of games against Ottawa and Edmonton who also struggle defensively. Their full schedule is home vs. OTT, at EDM, VAN, COL, home vs. VAN, and home vs. LAK.
Minnesota – The Wild have been HOT recently thanks to the play of the Staal-Zucker-Granlund line (twenty-six points in their first three games together!), and have a very appealing schedule: they see the Red Wings, Canucks and Oilers as highlights, but also get games against Colorado (twice) and Carolina where they can use Mikko Koivu to neutralize opponents while Staal and company run roughshod over their opponents’ depth lines. Lots to love from the Wild these days.
Ottawa – Senators fans can be elated that Erik Karlsson is still around, and fantasy owners can be elated about the Sens’ upcoming schedule; although they’ll have some back-to-backs and have five road games in this period, the seven games Ottawa gets is the most by far. Ottawa’s power play has scored a goal in each of their last three games and gets some bad PK teams in Arizona (13th), Vegas (15th), and Calgary (16th but putrid lately). They also play Dallas, Buffalo, Florida and Tampa Bay to round out their schedule.
Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)
Toronto – Between the 2nd and the 14th, the Maple Leafs only have four games, and are still missing Auston Matthews. Although their opponents can be sneakily bad – Washington, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, as well as a game at home against Dallas – this schedule makes it hard to use any Toronto players. The small bit of good news is for Freddie Andersen owners, who can roll him out with no back-to-backs scheduled.
St. Louis – Finally winning a game after losing seven in a row and trading away their 1A/1B centre, the Blues also only have four games during this slate, and even worse is the fact that they’re all road games. The Blues head to Dallas, get four days off, and then swing through California to face Anaheim, Los Angeles, and San Jose. Tough stretch against good teams for a team that’s struggling to score.
New York Islanders – The Isle have five games upcoming, but four of the five come on the road – Pittsburgh and Western Canada – and their first road game comes on a home/road back-to-back as NYI faces Montreal tonight. The Islanders have been neutered of late, scoring more than three goals only once in their past ten games (albeit they scored seven that game), and have been particularly bad on the road.
