When I visited my friend who lives in Tucson, he said I had to try the eegees at Eegee’s, a local treat. He described it as a cross between an ICEE and an Italian ice.
Eegee’s was founded in Tucson in 1971 and it seemed to be in every neighborhood of Tucson (there are currently 33 locations, mostly in Tucson). It looks like a fast food chain but they started with frozen lemonade and later added food (grinders, subs, chicken tenders, fries, salads). I’m told the food is forgettable.
Eegees come in four flavors and a flavor of the month: lemon, pina colada, strawberry, skinny berry. The flavor of the month was lucky lime. You can get them with the regular way, with fizz, or mixed with tea. They’re made with real fruit blended with ice.
Lucky lime eegee (small, $2.99): It was firmer than an ICEE but you can drink it through a straw. It’s a firm slushy. The flavor was tangy sweet. I thought it was good but I wouldn’t crave it because it didn’t taste just like lime and sugar (probably wasn’t totally natural, the color could not have been natural). I love limeade and would have preferred a limeade. However, I liked that it wasn’t crazy sweet.
