The Eero Mesh WiFi Router: A Game-Changer in Home Networking
In the digital age, a reliable and high-speed internet connection is no longer a luxury – it’s a necessity. Whether you're working from home, streaming your favorite TV shows, gaming online, or just browsing the web, a strong WiFi signal is crucial. However, many homeowners struggle with weak or spotty internet coverage in certain parts of their house. This is where mesh WiFi systems come into play, and Eero is one of the leading names in this space. In this blog, we'll dive deep into the Eero Mesh WiFi router, explore its features, and explain why it could be the ideal solution for your home network.
Tumblr media
What is a Mesh WiFi System?
Before we dive into the specifics of the Eero system, it’s important to understand what mesh WiFi is and why it’s different from traditional WiFi routers. Traditional routers typically use a single, powerful antenna to broadcast the internet signal to your devices. The closer you are to the router, the stronger the signal, but as you move farther away or through walls, the signal weakens, leading to dead zones or slow speeds.
Mesh WiFi systems, on the other hand, use multiple nodes (or units) that work together to create a seamless and consistent WiFi network throughout your entire home. These nodes communicate with each other to ensure that your devices are always connected to the strongest signal, regardless of where you are in your home. In short, mesh WiFi systems like Eero eliminate dead zones and provide more reliable coverage across larger spaces.
The Eero Mesh WiFi Router: An Overview
Eero, which was founded in 2014 and later acquired by Amazon in 2019, is one of the pioneers of mesh WiFi technology. The company has been revolutionizing home networking with its simple yet powerful mesh systems. The Eero Mesh WiFi router is designed to be easy to set up, manage, and scale as your needs grow.
Eero offers several models of mesh WiFi routers, from the basic Eero 6 to the more advanced Eero Pro 6. The Eero 6 series is designed for most households, providing fast speeds and reliable coverage, while the Eero Pro 6 targets larger homes or users with demanding internet needs, such as those who game or stream in 4K.
Key Features of the Eero Mesh WiFi Router
Seamless Coverage
One of the most significant advantages of the Eero system is its ability to provide seamless coverage throughout your home. Whether you're in the basement or the attic, the Eero Mesh WiFi ensures that your devices will always be connected to the strongest signal. The Eero router uses TrueMesh technology to intelligently route traffic between nodes, minimizing interruptions and providing uninterrupted speeds.
Easy Setup and Management
Unlike traditional routers, which can require complicated setups and technical knowledge, Eero is designed to be incredibly user-friendly. Setting up an Eero Mesh WiFi system is as simple as plugging in the nodes and following the instructions in the Eero app. The app guides you through the entire process, including finding the optimal placement for each node in your home.
Once the system is set up, the Eero app becomes your central hub for managing the network. You can view device connections, run speed tests, and set up parental controls, all from the app. The user-friendly interface ensures that you don’t need to be a tech expert to manage your network.
Wi-Fi 6 Technology
Wi-Fi 6 is the latest WiFi standard, and it’s a game-changer when it comes to speed, capacity, and efficiency. Eero Pro 6, for example, supports Wi-Fi 6, allowing you to take advantage of faster speeds, greater capacity for devices, and lower latency. With more devices in our homes than ever before—smartphones, laptops, smart TVs, security cameras, and IoT devices—Wi-Fi 6 ensures that your network can handle it all without slowing down.
Wi-Fi 6 also improves efficiency in dense environments, like apartment buildings, where multiple networks overlap. If you're dealing with a crowded Wi-Fi environment, Wi-Fi 6 will ensure that your network remains fast and reliable, even when many devices are connected.
Scalability
One of the biggest selling points of the Eero Mesh WiFi system is its scalability. You can start with just one Eero router and then expand your network by adding additional nodes as needed. The beauty of this system is that you can cover a wide area with minimal equipment. For example, if your home is large or has multiple floors, you can add an additional node to extend coverage to those hard-to-reach areas. Eero offers flexible solutions, whether you're living in a small apartment or a sprawling mansion.
Parental Controls and Security
Eero places a strong emphasis on network security, which is essential in today’s world of ever-evolving cybersecurity threats. The Eero system comes with built-in security features, including AES-256 encryption, ensuring that your data is protected as it moves across the network.
In addition, Eero offers optional Eero Secure and Eero Secure+ subscriptions, which provide advanced security features such as malware protection, ad blocking, and content filtering. These features are especially useful for households with children or teenagers, allowing parents to set up safe browsing limits and monitor internet usage.
Automatic Updates
Eero routers automatically receive firmware and software updates, ensuring that your system is always up to date with the latest features and security patches. This means that you don't have to worry about manually updating the firmware or dealing with any technical issues. The system works quietly in the background, keeping your network safe and performing at its best.
Alexa Integration
Since Amazon owns Eero, it’s no surprise that the system integrates seamlessly with Alexa, Amazon's virtual assistant. With Alexa, you can control your Eero network with voice commands. You can pause the internet for specific devices, check your WiFi speed, or turn off certain features, all using simple voice commands. This makes managing your home network even more convenient.
Performance and Speed
When it comes to WiFi performance, Eero delivers impressive results. The Eero Pro 6, in particular, supports speeds of up to 1 Gbps on the 5GHz band and 575 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band, making it suitable for most modern households with high-speed internet connections. Whether you’re streaming 4K video, gaming, or video conferencing, the Eero system will provide the bandwidth needed for smooth performance.
Additionally, the system’s ability to intelligently direct traffic means that devices don’t have to compete for bandwidth. Eero’s ability to avoid interference and optimize the network ensures that all your devices work efficiently at the same time.
Pros and Cons of the Eero Mesh WiFi System
Pros:
Easy setup and management via the Eero app
Excellent coverage and performance with minimal dead zones
Wi-Fi 6 support for faster speeds and better capacity
Scalable network that can grow with your needs
Advanced security features, including parental controls
Automatic updates to keep your system secure
Alexa integration for voice control
Cons:
No built-in USB ports for printer or storage sharing
Premium features (like Eero Secure) require a subscription
Some advanced configurations may require more technical knowledge
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Eero Mesh WiFi router is a top-tier solution for anyone looking to improve their home network. With its easy setup, reliable coverage, support for the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, and additional features like security options and Alexa integration, Eero offers a seamless experience for users of all technical abilities.
Whether you’re dealing with a large home, a growing number of devices, or simply want to eliminate Wi-Fi dead zones, Eero provides the flexibility, performance, and simplicity you need. If you’re looking to take your home network to the next level, the Eero Mesh WiFi router is certainly worth considering.

Amazon Adds Wi-Fi 6 Support on the Eero 6 Mesh Routers
Last year Amazon took over the mesh networking startup named Eero and released a new affordable version of its mesh router later. Now Amazon has come up with two new Eero mesh routers namely: the Eero 6 and Eero Pro 6. You can see from the name itself that both of the new devices will have Wi-Fi 6 support on them. Note that Wi-Fi 6 is the latest and fastest version of Wi-Fi.
The price for a three-piece is $279, and the dual-band system is $30, which is a bit more than the previous version of Eero. A two-pack system of Eero 6 is available at a price of $199, while if you go for a single Eero 6 router, you will have to spend $129.
The two-pack Eero 6 system is probably the best starting point for many users. You can also add additional extenders in order to expand your Eero mesh whenever desired, at $89 each.
Tumblr media
If you are willing to spend a bit more for the faster triband Eero system alongside a 5GHz additional band to get improved performance, you can go for the Eero Pro 6. The three-pack Eero Pro 6 comes at a price of $599. If you want the two-pack selling, you can get it for $399, and in case you want a single Eero Pro 6 router, it will cost you $229.
The Eero mesh routers have successfully maintained a good track record of their ease of use and their reliability as they offer multiple devices that are designed to obtain stronger, and more reliable Wi-Fi signals. The Wi-Fi 6 addition on the Eero 6 mesh allows the devices to take over the advantage of several new features like 1024QAM and OFDM. These features make the Wi-Fi faster and more efficient for the situations where a vast number of devices try to connect to a particular setup simultaneously.
The Eero 6 system is built specifically for the homes having the internet speed of up to 500Mbps. This is probably an upgrade compared to the last year’s Eero, which had a lesser speed. But this speed is a little slow for a Wi-Fi 6 standard. It seems like Amazon and Eero are more interested in positioning these router systems as a Wi-Fi 6 value pick. But still, the 500Mbps is not up to mark speed for a setup which has Wi-Fi 6. There are other high-powered mesh routers supporting Wi-Fi 6, with speed more than 500Mbps. They are no doubt the Asus ZenWiFi AX and the Netgear Orbi AX6000. The two-pack setup of those cost $450 and $700, respectively. However, the Eero Pro 6 is said to be designed for gigabit connections.
Eero provides regular and automatic security updates for all the Eero devices. These updates keep the home networks secure. Eero has promised to keep that approach in continuation with the upcoming routers too, and if you want advanced privacy and parental control features, you can opt for the Eero Secure subscription at a basic cost of $2.99 for a month. And for a total cost of $9.99 per month, you get Malwarebytes malware protection, 1Password password management, and Encrypt.me VPN access in the Eero Secure Plus subscription.
The routers can connect with smart home appliances like smart lights and smart locks, with the help of built-in Zigbee radios. They will also work with Alexa, letting you pair the routers with an Echo speaker. The one issue here is that the Eero devices don’t come with built-in speakers or microphones, like Nest Wifi by Google. Amazon has tried to keep Eero’s image a more privacy-minded solution to Nest. Also, the new Eero mesh doesn’t support Wi-Fi 6E.
However, the new Eero systems are available for preorder on Amazon and later will be available at all the major retail outlets. Eero has also planned to provide the routers through homebuilders, custom installers, and the participating internet service providers.

When it comes to mesh Wi-Fi systems, there are a few to choose from the Netgear Orbi and Google Wifi to eero.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been testing out the Linksys Velop Dual-Band Whole Home Mesh WiFi system. It’s the latest system in Linksys’ Velop mesh system, they previously had released a tri-band version but this dual-band is smaller and cheaper.
Design & Hardware
Tumblr media
Each of the nodes for the Linksys Velop Dual-Band system (AC2600), has a plastic build and white design with the Linksys logo on the front. On the back is where you’ll find the two ethernet ports and power.
Tumblr media
You can buy the Linksys Velop Dual-Band as either a single node or in a double or triple pack. You can also interchange the tri-band Velop nodes with the Linksys Velop Dual-Band system.
The nodes have quad-core processors, 256MB of flash storage and 256MB of RAM per node. The Linksys Velop Dual-Band supports 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi radios (one 2.4 GHz and one 5GHz) as well as 802.11 g/n/a/ac protocols.
Tumblr media
Each of the Linksys Velop Dual-Band nodes has beamforming and are designed to deliver the best network range and fast Wi-Fi speeds. When you set up two or more nodes, they’ll be able to talk to each other to create a single, unified wireless network.
Also, the Linksys Velop Dual-Band comes with Spot Finder Technology which will help you identify the optimal location for each node to help reduce latency.
Tumblr media
Linksys Velop Dual-Band (left) and Tri-Band (right)
The Linksys Velop Dual-Band starts at $249 CAD for a two-pack or $359 CAD for the three-pack.
Tumblr media
The three-pack (which I tested) is designed to be used in homes that are up to 4,000 sqft and the house I live in is fairly large around 3500 sqft. So I set up all three nodes in the Linksys Velop Dual-Band system I got and I found that some nodes, mainly the two upstairs would get weak or lose signal.
You can buy the Linksys Velop Dual-Band from Best Buy, Amazon.ca, and Linksys’ website.
App & Performance
Tumblr media
To set up the Linksys Velop Dual-Band, all you’ll need is the Linksys Connect app which is available for Android and iOS. One you download the app, you’ll be prompted to create a Linksys account and set up each node (depending on how many you want to setup).
Setting up each node in the Linksys Velop Dual-Band system is fairly straightforward but you’ll be waiting a good 2-3 minutes for each node to fully set up.
Tumblr media
Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to control all aspects of your wifi network from the app. You can set up your own guest network, add more nodes, do a speed check, parental controls, device prioritization. The app will also let you know if one of your nodes loses connection.
You can even as Alexa to turn your guest network on/off and give your guest the passwords to log in.
In terms of speeds, the Linksys Velop Dual-Band was able to give me download and upload speeds close to what I pay for. I pay for 75 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. I got around 50-60 Mbps down and 8-10 Mbps up on wireless.
When I connected my laptop directly to one of the nodes via the ethernet port, I got 75 Mbps and more for downloads and 10 Mbps for up.
I did notice some slow down issues occasionally, but nothing too worry some.
Final Thoughts
Tumblr media
The Linksys Velop Dual-Band is a great mesh Wifi system since it’s cheaper than it’s tri-band counterpart and other similar systems. However, I did have some issues with the nodes getting a weak signal and speed slowdowns.
Pros
Easy to setup
Linksys app allows to you to control all aspects of your system
Cheaper than tri-band Velop system
Each node has two ethernet ports
Can be used interchangeably with the tri-band nodes
Great performance & speeds
Cons
Nodes tend to get a weak signal
Some speed slow down issues
Can take a while to get the system up and running

The best alternatives to Apple’s discontinued AirPort routers
Apple has made the lengthy suspected demise of the AirPort line of routers official yesterday, with the remaining stock being bought off over the subsequent few weeks to months. If you are in search of a brand new router, AppleInsider has made a listing for you, of ones we have used, and like.
Many had anticipated this with rumors courting again to 2016 claiming that Apple disbanded the AirPort {hardware} group.
Many customers have been holding out hope and had delay upgrading networking gear with the expectation that Apple would finally replace the {hardware} yet one more time. With that not the case, AppleInsider has put collectively a listing of strong alternatives that may work properly together with your different Apple merchandise.
As outlined in Apple’s new help doc, there are two primary sorts of routers to discover, and a few primary {qualifications} to associate with them. Smaller properties would profit by utilizing a single router, whereas bigger properties may benefit from a mesh system.
All our really helpful routers help 802.11ac, and supply dual-band or tri-band help.
Eero (second technology)
Eero has lengthy been certainly one of our favorites. They have been the primary to popularize the concept of mesh networking in on a regular basis households. When we reviewed the unique Eero a number of years again, we fell in love with the simplicity of the App, and it seemed like one thing Apple would have launched.
When a second technology Eero launched, they mounted the majority of the problems skilled with the unique. There are a number of totally different choices, however the preferred choice consists of one giant Eero and two beacons, best suited to a two-to-four bed room dwelling.
The second technology mannequin is twice as highly effective as the unique and now has a 3rd 5GHz antenna. It additionally adopted USB-C and even helps Thread, Google’s new sensible dwelling protocol.
Of all of the routers we examined, in addition they had our favourite cellular app. It was clear, simple to use, and supplied a wealth of extra options.
Unfortunately, there isn’t any additional USB port on these units, so if you need Time Machine help, you will have an exterior NAS.
You can decide up the starter pack on Amazon or at B&H Photo for $399. If you will have a smaller dwelling, there’s a pack with one beacon for $298. Larger properties can seize the Pro setup which has three full sized Eeros for $499, additionally accessible at Amazon and B&H. For extra price financial savings, B&H is not going to accumulate gross sales tax on orders shipped outdoors New York and New Jersey (Colorado and Vermont residents, see right here).
Linksys Velop
Another certainly one of our favorites is the Velop router system from Linksys. Like the second gen Eero, the Velop are tri-band routers and are tall towers that seem like a blockier model of Apple’s newest AirPort units.
Linksys says that every node is enough for two,000 sq. ft, and you should purchase three bundled collectively, or individually to suit your wants. Velop can also be one of many few routers to help MU-MIMO, or Multi-User Multiple Input, Multiple Output.
The Velop app is good and easy, permitting you to view the units in your community, prioritize particular units, allow parental controls, run pace assessments, and extra.
Like Eero, they have no USB ports, so any linked storage for Time Machine could have to be a NAS over ethernet.
A 3-node starter pack of the Linksys Velop routers could be bought from Amazon and at B&H for $449.97.
Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD
Ubiquiti’s AmpliFi HD is by far the best for exceptionally giant properties. Even older buildings which have extraordinarily dense partitions or plenty of different obstructions.
Included is the principle router and two exterior beacons. They all look very putting, and the first router even has a full-color LCD contact display screen to get the time, date, web pace, IP tackle, and present throughput speeds.
Like the others, a cellular app is included that enables you to tinker and monitor your community. Guest entry is a standout right here, letting you create a visitor community that had an expiration.
There is a USB port across the rear of the unit, but it surely does not seem it’s energetic. Which once more implies that a NAS is your resolution for Time Machine help.
The Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD Home Wi-Fi System is obtainable at each Amazon and B&H Photo for $329.99 with free transport.
Google WiFi
As Apple exits the router market, Google has been making important in-roads. They first partnered with different producers for a line of routers earlier than launching their very own Google Wi-Fi system. The routers themselves look fashionable and glossy, and just like the others, is available in stark white.
Each “Wi-Fi Point” is able to protecting up to 1,500 sq. ft of your private home. They lack any USB ports so you’ll be able to’t join any USB storage or different peripherals, which can be a draw back for some.
Google’s app enables you to get arrange and going shortly and simply, with one other simplified design. The lack of USB ports means that is one other mesh router counting on NAS for backups.
Amazon has the Google Wi-Fi system (set of three) accessible for $258.97. B&H Photo additionally shares the 3-pack for $258.99 with free expedited transport to the contiguous U.S. The retailer is not going to accumulate gross sales tax on orders shipped outdoors New York and New Jersey as properly (Colorado and Vermont residents, see right here).
Netgear Orbi
There are plenty of followers of the Netgear Orbi routers, although once we examined them they’d fairly a number of points. Namely, sluggish web speeds that we did not expertise with different routers. Since then, a number of updates have been issued to the units, and glowing opinions for the reason that early problematic ones might sign these points have since been eradicated.
They do have fairly the spectacular specification record with tri-band help, MU-MIMO, six antennas for five,000 ft of protection, and a litany of ports. On the principle router resides three Gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port, and a USB 2.0. The satellite tv for pc beacon has its personal 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports and an extra USB 2.Zero port for extra peripherals. Unfortunately, the USB port presently solely helps printers with ReadyShare and never arduous drives. So if a Time Machine backup is required, take into account a NAS choice.
They can be found on Amazon for $291.99 with free transport.
Netgear Nighthawk AC2300
When single routers, probably the most highly effective is the Netgear Nighthawk AC2300. This router performs properly below heavy hundreds and could be superior for avid gamers. It can all be configured by means of a full-featured Web interface that’s simple for each novices and professionals.
One factor specifically we favored is the flexibility to prioritize visitors in two alternative ways. Outgoing visitors could be prioritized for video games, whereas incoming visitors could be prioritized for video streaming.
One draw back is that it’s only a dual-band router, which can not carry out properly in crowded environments like metropolis condo buildings. Luckily, the USB port can be utilized for a tough drive, so each USB storage and NAS work for Time Machine.
Amazon at the moment has the Netgear Nighthawk AC2300 on sale for $167.99, a reduction of $32 off MSRP.
Synology RT-2600ac
This dual-band router helps MU-MIMO like others and even can work as a Time Machine backup. Just connect your storage to the rear of the router and you’re set to go.
It has built-in content material filtering and parental controls as properly. VPN Plus permits RT2600ac to function a robust VPN server, which may give you much more safe entry.
The again of the Synology RT-2600ac has a USB 3.Zero port, USB 2.Zero port, and even an SD card reader which is one thing we normally do not see on routers.
You can discover the Synology RT-2600ac on Amazon for $194.99.
Netgear Nighthawk AD7200
This is one highly effective router that not solely helps 802.11ac however 802.11advert wi-fi as properly. Around again are 7 LAN ports and one 1 WAN port lowering the necessity for an extra Ethernet change.
With blazing quick speeds and MU-MIMO help, it is a nice router to go along with in case you are wanting to future-proof your community. Netgear does not explicitly name out Time Machine help, so proceed with warning.
Retailing for $449.99, Amazon at the moment has the AD7200 on sale for $377.84 with free transport, a reduction of $72.
Asus RT-AC3200
This tri-band router is able to some fairly spectacular efficiency. Though it’s on the costly aspect, there are many useful options.
If you join a flash drive or different USB storage system to the again of the RT-AC3200, you’ll be able to entry these information from wherever. To entry it you simply want the Asus AiCloud app or an online browser, however that could be a fairly useful characteristic to have at your disposal.
It additionally acts as its personal safety software program. Known as AiProtection, it’ll detect any contaminated units in your community and prevents any info from being stolen from them. it additionally blocks recognized malicious web site and always runs safety checks.
Although the Asus RT-AC3200 retails for $279.99, it is at the moment 32 % off on Amazon, bringing the value down to $191.19.
You get what you pay for
Routers actually vary of their efficiency and skills. Like the rest, you get what you pay for.
Apple’s routers have by no means been the general quickest, however they’ve all the time been dependable and extremely really helpful. The timing could also be proper for Apple to abandon the AirPort lineup as we’re seeing a little bit of a renaissance within the home-networking market with many new standalone and mesh-systems hitting the market.
Many routers can be found for below $100, however these are hardly ever dependable. Especially with terrifying safety exploits like KRACK that might largely go un-patched on these price range units.
