Idiosyncrasies & Random Stuff
~ named after his mother’s favorite billiards champion (Efren “Bata” Reyes)
~ He’s always had a blushing problem; doesn’t matter what emotion it is, if it’s strong enough, he gets flushed.
~ started out wearing a mask to hide the blushing and hide his expression; it’s fun keeping fellow Shadows guessing
~ likes to make up reasons why he wears the mask all the time
~ eventually realizes that he got so used to freely making silly expressions behind a mask that he can’t school his features without it anymore
~ which is fine, it became habit anyway; he enjoys any rumors among the Shadows about him and why he stays masked when others remove theirs outside of ops.
~ there are way too many benefits to wearing a mask for him to quit
~ Biting is a very valid tactic, on and off the battlefield; as an offensive move and form of affection (but he doesn’t bite out of affection as often as he’d like because he doesn’t wanna scare the other Shadows lol)
~ kinda short circuits a bit when handled roughly
~ Tore a man’s throat out with his teeth on Grave’s behalf; Graves **really** liked that and decided to give him the callsign Cerberus and collared him (it’s a pleasant grounding presence around his neck)
~ will start growling when stress levels are maxed out or if very sleep deprived
~ keeps a cork board of photos in his quarters; photos of Shadows past and present
~is banned from the kitchen(s), no, not just SC HQ or bases.
~ grabs ahold of anyone or anything that comes into contact with him while
sleeping; he’s like a bear trp that way
~ he’s seen the effects of substance abuse and addiction first hand; it’s why he limits alcohol intake, drinks one cup of coffee a day (hence the regularly scheduled naps), and avoids gambling and smoking
~ deeply misses his parents and his childhood; often wonders if they’d even recognize him as their son
- Voice claim: Isaac Clarke (VA: Gunner Wright) (Dead Space games)

Backstory
7-11/Efren is one of Graves’ most loyal Shadows and considers himself a vanguard of the Company.
After losing his parents at 13 to a vehicular accident (for which he blames himself for) and the subsequent abuse and neglect from his uncle, Efren spent most of his teenage years feeling untethered, numb yet seething with anger and guilt.
He spent his early years working part time jobs to make ends meet while getting into fist fights with the local gangs to release the deep seated fury within.
A final altercation with his uncle drove Efren to seek structure and a place to belong in the Marine Corps.
There, Efren, while excelling at every aspect soldiering, would often be easily goaded and provoked into brawling with other recruits of his cohort.
This led to his first meeting with Graves, a cocky, silver tongued, MARSOC operator in his mid twenties.
Graves issued a challenge to Efren, which ended with Efren being so thoroughly *humbled* that it altered his brain chemistry, quieting his feral hind brain to a dull roar for the first time in what felt like forever.
Fixated on Graves after that meeting, Efren joined Force Recon with the hope of providing crucial intel to support his fellow Marines (especially Graves).
He always kept an ear out for news of KIA personnel; thankfully Graves was never one of them.
After years of serving in Force Reconnaissance, Efren was faced with making a decision whether or not to re-up to continue his service or to move on into civilian life.
As if summoned, Graves appeared after so many years, and whisked Efren away to his new Shadow Company, where he world finally find a new home.
The irony of feeling at peace in a PMC was not lost on him.
Wherever Graves went, he would be his Shadow and support. For Efren, it was the least he could do after the man gave him everything.
((May add more as i go✨))

Marjorie didn’t tell off Mark as dramatically as she wanted to. Instead, she knew she had to make it up to Rita, who was completley oblivious to what had happened. She spent days painting her most equistite piece ever. After it was finished, it was estimated to be worth $10,000. Instead of selling it to the highest bidder, Marjorie went to the Wells-Davis household and presented the artwork as a gift for baby Efren. Rita was beyond grateful to receive such an amazing piece of art, while Marjorie made sure to walk past Mark on her way out. He said nothing, but sweat dripped down his forehead as she exited his mansion.

AN ACTOR’S CALLING: a biography
“Well somebody had to play these roles, and it happened to be me. No matter the role, or how small it is, you have to give it your best” — Eddie Garcia
Tumblr media
Actor, television personality, film director, and producer. He is widely considered the "best Filipino actor of all time" with more or less 700 film and television performances and a career spanning seven decades. A Wiseman said that in everything we do we must always give our 100 percent. A very evident trait of the late great Eddie Garcia, which is shown in his marvelous works, shows, and films, he always gives his 100 percent in his works. And even if he is in his later years, his dedication to acting is unparalleled, he never let his age be a hindrance in doing what he does best.
Part I: The Arrival
Eduardo “Eddie” Verchez Garcia was born in Juban, Sorsogon, to Antonio Garcia and Vicenta Verchez on May 2, 1929. He was raised by his grandparents on a farm in Naga with his four siblings, Mila, Efren, Menchu, and Santiago. Garcia's ancestors were descendants of Spanish colonists. Garcia's grandfather, who arrived in the Philippines in 1870 as a captain in the Spanish army, married a lady from Pampanga and settled in Naga.
He attended Sorsogon Elementary School before transferring to Manila to finish high school at San Beda College, where he earned an A.B. For three years, he studied psychology at the same college on the same campus.
 Part II: Family and Life
Garcia had a 33-year civil partnership with Lilibeth Romero. Garcia was married to Lucilla Scharnberg before Romero, who died of cancer in 1995. He and Scharnberg had three children: Eduardo "Eddieboy" Jr., Erwin, and Elizabeth. At the age of 22, Eddieboy died in a motorbike accident; Garcia termed it "the biggest tragedy of his life," and he felt terrible about it because the motorcycle his son had used was his gift to him. In 1996, Elizabeth died after a heart attack. He is the stepfather representative of Mikee Romero and has a living daughter Lisa Ortega who lives in San Diego, California.
"Acting is just a profession. It's an honest way to make a living," Garcia said, adding that he had originally dreamed to be a soldier or a lawyer. He was also enthusiastic about target shooting as a sport and was a superb marksman, having previously served in the military.
Tumblr media
Part III: Star in the Making
Garcia was a military policeman in Okinawa, Japan, after serving with the Philippine Scouts following World War II. His commanding commander asked him to return and enlist for another overseas assignment after he returned, but he met a friend who convinced him to pursue a career in show business.
Garcia began his acting career by applying for the late renowned director Manuel Conde and was accepted for his first role in the feature film "Siete Infantes de Lara" in 1949. In the same year as his first acting role, he appeared in the film "Kahit and Mundo'y Magunaw." "Huling Patak ng Dugo" and "Kilabot ng Langit," both released in 1950, were among his first two films in the industry.
He was first classified as a villain due to his Hispanic appearance and demeanor. In 1955, he appeared in Olive La Torre's film "Contravida." He was so good as a villain that he received his first FAMAS awards for Best Supporting Actor three years in a row, from 1957 to 1959, for the films "Taga sa Bato," "Condenado," and "Tanikalang Apoy," respectively. He is the only person to win any prize from that particular institution three times in a row.
Tumblr media
In 1961, he directed his first film, "Karugtong ng Kahapon," and in 1963, he directed another important film, "Historia un Amor." Garcia directed "Pinagbuklod ng Langit" in 1969, earning him his first FAMAS Best Director award.
 Part IV: Rise to Stardom
Garcia was a key figure in the Philippine film movement from the 1970s to the early 1980s, which is known as the "Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema." In 1978, he returned to directing and producing, starring Nora Aunor in Atsay, which won Best Picture at the Metro Manila Film Festival.
Garcia won back-to-back Luna Awards for Best Director for another film he directed the following year, "Magdusa Ka." He also appeared in "Kapag Puno na ang Salop (1987)" and its sequel, "Ako ang Huhusga (1989)," both directed by Fernando Poe, Jr. In 1989, he received the Metro Manila Film Festival Award for Best Director for the film "Imortal." In 1991, he was inducted into the FAMAS Hall of Fame as a director, and on March 21, 1992, the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation dubbed him "All-Time Favorite Actor of RP Movies." In 1991, Garcia starred in the film "Boyong Maalac: Hoodlum Terminator," for which he won the FAMAS Best Actor award a year later.
Tumblr media
The Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. He starred in Raymond Red's Anino (Shadow, 2000), which received the Cannes Film Festival's grand prize in the short film category in 2000. Garcia won the Best Actor award for his role as an elderly criminal who protected a young prisoner from the harsh realities of prison life in the film Death Row in 2000.
Tumblr media
In 2002, Garcia won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the film "Mano Po." At the 2002 Star Awards, he won his first Best Actor in a Drama Series award for playing Leandro Montemayor, the fictional Philippine President in GMA 7's television drama series "Kung Mawawala Ka." In 2000, he won the Urian Award for Pangunahing Aktor (Best Actor) for his performance in the film Death Row. In 2006, he received the Natatanging Gawad Urian award.
Tumblr media
 Part V: Later Life
He had an appearance in the television series "Little Nanay" in 2015. From 2016 until 2019, he worked with Coco Martin in ABS-CBN's “Ang Probinsyano," the longest-running action television show in Philippine history.
Tumblr media
Garcia continued to act in films until he was 89 years old, stating that "retirement was never in my vocabulary." His last notable work was Hintayan ng Langit, an entry in the 2018 QCinema International Film Festival in which he starred alongside Gina Pareño.
Tumblr media
Garcia was taken to Mary Johnson Hospital in Tondo, Manila, on June 8, 2019, after stumbling on a cable wire and hitting his head against the sidewalk while filming "Rosang Agimat," a GMA Network upcoming television series. When he was transferred to Makati Medical Center's ICU the next day, he was unconscious. His brain was found to be in normal functioning order on a CT scan, ruling out the possibility of a stroke. As a result of the fracture, he was in a coma until June 15th. He was still on a ventilator and showed little indication of brain activity. At the age of 90, he died at 4:55 p.m. the next day. 20.06.2019 Garcia's ashes were cremated and buried in an olive green urn shortly after his death, as he had requested. Taguig's Heritage Memorial Park was chosen to host his wake.
Eddie Garcia is one of the greatest, if not the greatest actor in the Philippine showbiz industry. He is the most versatile actor that I have ever seen, he can act in drama films or television shows, action shows and films, comedy films, etc. And his dedication to acting is incomparable, at very old age he still films action series, which is unbelievable considering the risk it brings to his age. It is just sad that he died during a taping. Eddie Garcia is gone, but his contributions to Philippine Entertainment Industry are unmatchable, he is the one and only “Manoy” of the Philippine Showbiz Industry.

Armor Div, partners reach out to disadvantaged kids in Tarlac City
#PHinfo: Armor Div, partners reach out to disadvantaged kids in Tarlac City
CAPAS, Tarlac, March 10 (PIA) -- Armor Division together with its partner-stakeholders reached out to 36 disadvantaged children sheltered at the St. Joseph Home for Special Children in barangay San Jose, Tarlac City.    Aside from the feeding activity, each child-beneficiary received a bag that contains new clothes and toys, while some sacks of rice, boxes of canned goods, and other food stuff were given for the personnel and orphanage upkeep.    In an interview, Armor Division Commander Major General Efren Baluyot expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to give back and interact with the children at the orphanage.    “This will surely be a continuous activity not only in the Division Headquarters but with all the units of Armor Division. Also, I am thankful for the time, effort and donations extended by our stakeholders, military personnel and other individuals,” he said.
Armor Division and its stakeholders conduct feeding activity, and provide gift bags to the disadvantaged children of the St. Joseph Home for Special Children. (Armor Division)
As a part of the collaborative efforts for the activity, the JVP Bread King Corporation (Jelexie Bakeshop) donated 200 pieces of assorted bread products; the Armor Division Press Corps handed-out hygiene products; and the homeowners/members of the Philippine Army Village Housing Association provided clothes, shoes and toys for the kids.    For her part, St. Joseph’s Executive Directress Sr. Leoncia Mateo said she appreciated having Team Armor as the benefactor partner of their organization.    “Generous hearts of the military personnel, and other people and organizations who made the activity enjoyable and successful will always be in the hearts and minds of the children in our care,” Mateo added.    The activity aims to help disadvantaged members of the community through the provision of social support and services especially amid the pandemic. I am very thankful that from the moment i decide to share the Knowledge of Hilot to the world, people start responding to my prayer. I started first as a Spa Therapist at Fitness First Spa. I learned basic massage there and some spa treatment. But as i learn modern spa treatments, i recognize it’s similarity to what i am doing when i was still a young boy that i made suggestion to our Spa Training Manager and accept what i suggest. From then on my manager ask me to develop spa treatments that they could offer on a monthly promotion.
When i resigned, i plan to go abroad to have a better income opportunity. But when i apply they are looking for a National Certification or License and not just having a Diploma or Certificate of Employment. By the Way i took a Diploma Course in Alternative Medicine at Saint Francis Divine College School of Alternative Medicine headed by the Late Dr. Ruben M. Galang MD. He is the one who give instruction to us and i have worked personally in his Clinic in Cubao, Quezon City for 2 years. This is the formal education i had in college.
When the employment agency i applied to work abroad give me requirements to have a National Certification and License, i went to TESDA QC office and i was referred to Humancare International Inc. to take the National Assessment and Certification. It is just a one day of written test and practical demonstration of what i know in massage. After the exam as they review my documents and see my Diploma in Alternative Medicine they give me recommendation to become a Trainer and Assessor. As i receive my training certificate i was directly endorsed to become an Accredited Trainer and Assessor on Massage Therapy NC II and Hilot Wellness NC II.
Certificate of Accreditation as Hilot Wellness Massage Assesor
National Certificate as Hilot Wellness Massage Trainer
National Certificate as Hilot Wellness Massage provider
And from the certification, i had helped to establish Philippine Japan Hilot Association that is in Imus, Cavite.
But this does not last for long. And i have feel that seeking after for accreditation in following standards are very limiting. So in 2012 i have established Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. which will incorporate the Spiritual Aspect of Healing into Hilot as Philippine Traditional, Natural and Indigenous Medicine.
Luntiang Aghama Natural Divine Arts Shrine of Healing Inc. is a religious organization that believes that every individual has our own identity that is unique from the society; and that identity is a sacred gift from the Divine Creator. We believe that our identity is the manifestation of the Divine Power into our life; and this manifestation should be reared and cultivated into each individual lives. And from this ideals of Luntiang Aghama, Hilot Academy was created in order to help people cultivate their own gifts of healing as part of their own unique identity as a Being and as a Filipino.  You may learn more about Luntiang Aghama by clicking on the link HERE.
And now we are doing Hilot as part of the Shrine Activity, i feel the difference of it compared to the standardized Hilot that been promoted in the society. The barriers of limitation has been lifted but the struggles are still going on.
The Struggle of making Hilot work for the practitioner to generate income; the struggle to make Hilot as part of Primary Health Care Delivery System; and the Struggle in uplifting the life of the Common People.
As Manghihilot, i am thinking to stop. I am thinking to change my path. I am thinking to leave this oath of my service and do more in generating money for my self and to my family. I am thinking to delete this site so that no one could ever see this again. But…
I already have started this…. and i am growing old….
I remember my fellow advocate who already have crossed the veil.
Ka Efren Guanzon. Mang Boy Fajardo. Nanay Noni Del Mundo. Ka Victor Donaire.
I don’t know how you live when you are still alive. But your works have marked on the lives of the people whom you touched. The Fight you have started are now on hang. But the struggles of many Manghihilot in our country still continue without any difference.
I ask you now my Fellow Manghihilot whom i met. And to all our Manghihilot Ancestors in the other world to guide us, as we continue Our Works in preserving this ancient science and art of Philippine Traditional Medicine in our Land.
200th WordPressing at HABI Today on my 200th WordPress post for Hilot Academy i would like to share to everyone my thoughts of being a Manghihilot.

Thoughts : Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Tumblr media
There was a short window of time in the mid-2000s that made it seem like independent films and directors were having a renaissance in terms of popular culture.  Lots of 1990s underground heroes were starting to get into positions of power in the industry, some of the previous indie-darlings were becoming household names, and an entirely new crop of creators was getting exposure thanks to a proliferation of studio involvement.  During this time, MTv had resurfaced as a player in the film game, and one of their best offerings was the delightful and memorable Napoleon Dynamite.
The Dynamite family, members of the Preston, Idaho community, are an odd bunch.  Brothers Napoleon (Jon Heder) and Kip (Aaron Ruell) live with their grandmother Carlinda (Sandy Martin), an older woman with a very active social life, especially in comparison to that of Napoleon (a loner with an active imagination) and Kip (a thirty-something who spends all of his free time in online chats).  When Carlinda suffers a quad-cycle accident at the sand dunes with her friends, Uncle Rico Dynamite (Jon Gries), a former high-school athlete and self-proclaimed ladies’ man, moves in to head the household, much to the dismay of Napoleon.  While Kip and Rico attempt to move forward with a door-to-door sales routine in hopes of making extra money, Napoleon befriends two students at his school : the shy Deb (Tina Majorino), and the quiet but confident transfer student Pedro (Efren Ramirez).  Due to their outcast labels, the three band together in friendship and attempt to turn the social hierarchy of their school upside-down, including setting targets on the school election and talent show specifically.  Rico, however, is managing to throw monkey-wrenches into Napoleon’s adventures via his exploits with the parents of Napoleon’s fellow students.  With Kip exploring a budding relationship, Rico continuing blindly in his selfish ways, and Napoleon attempting to raise the profile of himself and his friends, things come to a head in a myriad of unexpected and hilarious ways.
Napoleon Dynamite’s created universe, and the characters that inhabit it, seem to fall somewhere on a spectrum between Charles Schulz and John Hughes.  There are essentially only two general personality types : quirky and dominating.  Everyone on the quirky side has unique elements that make them fall under that label, while the handful of dominating characters essentially use only that trait, whether it be through intimidating force or putting out signals of attraction.  Each character has a specific ‘tick’ that is a signature for them, and over the course of the film, the main characters grow to embrace that unique thing about them, apply it in a surprising way, and gain confidence from it.  It’s a simple formula, but it is executed very well here.
As far as the characters go, their unique looks and understated (but hilarious) performances work well in tandem.  Kip and Rico play much younger than their age, while Napoleon, Pedro and Deb play true to their age.  Everyone comes off like a living, breathing cartoon or comic strip, with the exposition and events that take place happening in a seemingly episodic nature.  Hints of depth are given for each character in very subtle ways, be it Deb’s business ingenuity and artistic eye, Pedro’s love of his culture and assured nature, or Napoleon’s alpha-male characteristics he hides behind his shyness.  The dynamic between Kip and Napoleon is hard to put a finger on, as Kip seems to be the younger brother in many ways until his romantic chats manifest as a genuine and loving relationship.
Of all the transformations and moments in this film to embrace, the shining moment has to be Napoleon’s triumphant dance at the student elections.  Jamiroquai’s Canned Heat and Napoleon’s dance moves not only instantly put a smile on viewer’s face, it is a sincerely cathartic release of a movie-full (if not a theoretical lifetime) of bullying and being made fun of, like a glorious phoenix rising from the ashes that are high school social hierarchies.  The confluence of random events, from the discovery of the dance instructional video, to LaFawnduh’s gifting of the mixtape, to the fact that the student election has a talent portion, all magically lineup like a runway guiding Napoleon towards a takeoff, and a deserved one at that, as every other main character had found some sort of redemption by that moment.
Jon Heder’s iconic performance in the titular role was so good that it overshadowed him for quite a while, as the Napoleon character gained fame beyond that of its creators.  Similarly, Efren Ramirez and his incredibly laid back charismatic confidence also reached cult levels of popularity, with Vote for Pedro taking on a life of its own.  Tina Majorino is charming and equally as shy as Napoleon is at the onset, which makes their combination work extremely well.  Aaron Ruell turns in what is probably my favorite performance, with his demure presence masking some incredible sass that is unlocked courtesy of LaFawnduh’s arrival.  Jon Gries is equal parts lovable and annoying, as his inability to move past a time he regrets has literally stunted his intellectual and emotional growth, making him as endearing as he is frustrating.  Brief (but memorable) appearances by Shondrella Avery, Haylie Duff, Emily Kennard, Diedrich Bader, and Sandy Martin round out the strong cast.
Napoleon Dynamite is a movie that not only gives me guaranteed laughs with each watch, it also provides me discovery of moments I’d previously overlooked.  Like a fine, absurdist wine, this film just gets better as the years go by.

Martial Arts in San Diego is not all about punching and kicking harder
Martial Arts Classes in San Diego is not all about punching and kicking harder… Nutrition plays a big part in your martial arts training due to the stress one puts on their system during each training session at the dojo.
Often adults and parents think of martial arts as only for self-defense. However, if one was to step back analyze the exercises used during a martial arts classes one would quick realize karate was now of the first cross fit programs.  The exercises used as warm up at the James Martial Arts Academy are explosive plyometrics movements (e.g.; jump kicks, low horse stances with kicks)
In the following article by Efren Diosdado, he explains how childhood obesity is on the increase and how martial arts can help increase your child’s overall health and a fun way:
Parents look to martial arts to fight childhood obesity
Childhood obesity has quadrupled in the last 3o years, and the U.S. has the highest rate in the world. According to the Center for Disease Control, obesity now affects one in six children and adolescents in the United States.  Some parent’s solution to this is by putting their kids in martial arts.
But is martial arts the correct solution to child obesity?
It could be if parents go about it the right way.
Master Jason White, owner and instructor of the Iron Dragon, says kids benefit from martial arts by learning discipline and staying active. White incorporates a reward/punishment system. If his kids get straight A’s in school they get gift certificates. If they misbehave, they can’t do their belt test to move up in color.
“The idea is for them to have the same behavior in here, at school and at home,” White said. “So we develop ways to go about doing that.”
Master White says the kid’s classes run for about an hour. But students like Elektra Olivarez, who has trained over four years, have developed enough conditioning to handle more than one class a day.
The CDC, in consultation with many experts on child fitness, currently recommends 60 minutes per day of physical activity that includes activities to improve cardiovascular endurance, strength and bone health. See full post here...
At the James Martial Arts Academy, we incorporate high energy classes which will which will allow kids to learn effective self-defense in a fun and safe way and they do not realize the great workout their getting.
As the previous article clearly illustrated the case for getting your child involved in some type of physical activity.  This Ted Talk by Matt Young great Ted Talk on childhood obesity provides statistics that this generation of children has a lower life expectancy than their parents.

As a certified personal trainer, I able to provided our student nutrition plans and suggestions. When students want to improve their diet, I stress to them is replacing meals with a plant based ones.  I tell them not to go kamikaze, but to start off by replacing one meal then move to two meals.   This article by Dr. Michael Greger reinforces that a plant-based diet is healthier for adults and children.
And a benefit of this diet will improve mood, you will have less tension, anxiety, and fatigue.
Plant-Based Diets for Improved Mood and Productivity
We’ve known those eating plant-based diets tend to have healthier mood states—less tension, anxiety, depression, anger, hostility, and fatigue—but we couldn’t tell if it was cause and effect until it was put it to the test, which researchers finally did. What could account for such rapid results?
Eating a vegetarian diet gives you a better antioxidant status, which may help with depression, as I discussed in Antioxidants and Depression. Also, as I previously addressed in A Better Way to Boost Serotonin, consumption of even a single carbohydrate-rich meal can improve depression, tension, anger, confusion, sadness, fatigue, alertness, and calmness scores among patients with premenstrual syndrome. But what about long term?

Overweight men and women were randomized into two groups: one following a low-carb, high-fat diet and the other following a high-carb, low-fat diet for a year. By the end of the study, who had less depression, anxiety, anger, hostility, feelings of dejection, tension, fatigue, confusion, fewer mood disturbances, and better vigor?
“The sustained improvements in mood in the LF [low-fat] group compared with the LC [low-carb] group are consistent with results from epidemiological studies showing that diets high in carbohydrate and low in fat and protein are associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression and have beneficial effects on psychological well-being.”
The overall amount of fat in the research subjects’ diet didn’t change significantly, though. But the type of fat did. Their arachidonic acid intake fell to zero. Arachidonic acid is an inflammatory omega-6 fatty acid that can adversely affect mental health via a “cascade of neuroinflammation”—that is, it may inflame your brain.
High levels of arachidonic acid in the bloodstream have been associated with a greater likelihood of suicidal risk and major depressive episodes, for example. How can we stay away from the stuff? Americans are exposed to arachidonic acid primarily through chicken and eggs. So, when we remove eggs, chicken, and other meat we eliminate preformed arachidonic acid from our diet.
Although high-quality treatment studies examining diet’s impact on depression are scarce, there was the successful two-week trial discussed earlier and, even better, a twenty-two-week study. Overweight or diabetic employees of a major insurance corporation received either weekly group instruction on a whole food, plant-based diet or no diet instruction for five and one-half months.
There was no portion size restriction, no calorie counting, no carb counting, and no change in exercise. No meals were provided, but the company cafeteria did start offering daily plant-based options such as lentil soup, minestrone, and bean burritos.
Participants ate no meat, eggs, dairy, oil, or junk, yet they reported greater diet satisfaction compared with the control group participants who had no diet restrictions. More participants in the plant-based intervention group reported improved digestion, increased energy, and better sleep than usual at week 22 compared with the control group.
They also reported a significant improvement in physical functioning, general health, vitality, and mental health. The plant-based group beat out controls on nearly every measure. Read the complete article here…

All the OC questions with the selkie fam, which includes the 3 bros, Irena, and Anneliese, and also the boys mom if she's developed enough
HECK Y’ALL KNOW HOW TO DELIVER
*these asks are from this post in case anyone wants to either send more or reblog the original
unfortunately i’m going to skip their mom for now just because she’s not developed enough :’c
1. Do any of your OCs have a speech impediment?
elian: nope! but megan suggested he sound congested all the time because of the ridiculous sounds weddell seals make
abbe: none
roland: none
irena: none
anneliese: none
2. Do any of your OCs have a physical disability?
elian: already answered!
abbe: none
roland: none; im suddenly considering giving him bad eyesight though #glasses_roland2017
irena: none
anneliese: none
3. What is your OCs favorite band if they have one? (i’m answering this assuming they have access to the broad variety of music we have)
elian: i feel like he would like the sound of bands like fall out boy, daft punk, imagine dragons etc. but he would like the lyrics of twenty one pilots more because he relates to them the most
abbe: bryan adams?? phil collins?? elton john?? someone like that.
roland: i’m torn because i want roland to be an edgelord but i also want him to be a quiet shy baby so why not both? i think he would like Gorillaz. sometimes laid back and chill and other times a little edgier. also in with the type of kids i feel like he would hang out with.
irena: something a little older from when she was a teenager. probably a female artist. why are gwen stefani or celine dion sticking out to me?
anneliese: SHE’S THE 12 YEAR OLD GIRL WHOS OBSESSED WITH BOYBANDS like one direction and 5 seconds of summer. i feel like she would also love softer female artists like regina spektor
4. Does your OC have anything they take pride in? (like an award or collection?)
elian: *vibrates excitedly* spoilers
abbe: mostly how he’s been given the ability to… move on? his mom is still trapped in their family’s past tragedies and roland and elian are dragged down with that as well, but abbe’s been the one to grow and rebuild the house and get married and now he’s gonna be a dad soon. he’s proud he’s been able to continue the legacy.
roland: he’s really proud of the things relating to his equestrian hobbies. he’s just starting out in the horse-breeding business but he has one or two really nice mares and im sure he has another one he’s training for the royal guard. he’s also the best rider in his family because its like all he does lol.
irena: she was able to get out from under the shadow of her mother. irena and her mom don’t really like each other and her mom was always disappointed that she decided to become a knight instead of trying to climb the social ladder. they kind of stopped talking. ironically enough, irena ended up basically being adopted into a Duke’s family and though it’s super petty and very vengeful i think irena’s also proud of how she became everything her mother wanted in her own way and without her mom’s help. she likes to think of her mom being salty and jealous.
anneliese: her reputation! she had to essentially rebuild it from the ground up after her dad did naughty scandalous things but she’s proven herself to the people who serve her.
5. Does your OC have a favorite film? (answering like they live in modern times)
elian: he likes superhero movies, like the marvel movies. i haven’t actually seen a lot of these so i can’t pick the one that’s his favorite but i have a feeling it’s like captain america or spiderman. he wont stop making jokes about how roland is emo peter parker.
abbe: already answered!
roland: black beauty he strikes me as the type who would like psychological thrillers like the shining or inception. movies that have lots of deep layers and summaries you stay up late reading until you’re too scared to go to bed.
irena: she would like things with very traditional elaborate fight scenes and dynamic relationships and cool props and swords and armor and epic battles so basically she’s a lord of the rings fan.
anneliese: literally the only thing coming to my mind are the twilight movies. the fault in our stars. ya’know stuff like that. i think she would be a big sucker for the princess bride.
6. How tall is your OC?
elian: 5′1″
abbe: 5′7″
roland: 5′6″
irena: 5′2″
anneliese: 5′0″
7. Does your OC have any celebrity crushes? (answering like they live in modern times)
elian: i don’t think he really follows celebrities he cares more about the quality of the movies they make.
abbe: maybe he had one when he was younger but now that he’s married and has a kid on the way he doesn’t have time for these kinds of trivial things he has to focus on the #wife.
roland: the actresses who are a little older but very #classic. julie andrews. judy garland. he might also like modern stars like anne hathaway or emma stone. one of those two.
irena: what if she was a david bowie fan i feel bad not immediately saying her husband dwayne the rock johnson
anneliese: nick jonas. justin timberlake. orlando bloom. every boy from one direction. you get my drift.
8. Do you ship any 2 of your OCs?
elian: ANNELIESE
abbe: his beautiful loving delicate sensitive understanding wife rosalie k thanks bye
roland: his super big crush on lady jeannine harpers kills me everyday
irena: dwayne the rock johnson
anneliese: ELIAN
9. How would you describe your OCs fashion taste?
elian: bold. he likes things that make him feel adventurous like big hats with feathers or sturdy boots. he’s upper class so he’s still gotta look nice but he goes for that “i’m a rich guy who’s never been camping in my life but i went out and bought all this super nice fancy camping gear so people will think i’m professional when i’m not” look.
abbe: very presentable, always On Point™. he’s gotta dress to impress, so all his clothes are neatly pressed and he tries not to wrinkle them up too much or get them dirty. he tends to trade in neutral colors like white and black for things a little brighter to liven up the house a bit. he’s still young. let abbe be Free™.
roland: he’s a big emo hot topic baby and the only thing he’ll wear is black.
irena: sleek shiny new armor that’s hand-crafted with details carved into the breastplate and shoulder pieces. regal deep colors and clean polished boots.
anneliese: PINK. big poofy dresses. less of a focus on patterns and more of a focus on teeny cutesy details.
10. Does your OC have any special talents?
elian: lmao i’ve never talk about this before but i sort of headcanon he’s alright at. fishing. it’s dangerous for him to swim and when his dad was around he was in the same situation. as selkies they still had a strong draw towards the water so instead of fishing as seals they would bond with each other by going to the shore or out on a boat and just have some quiet fishing time. :’) but anyway because of all that elian is much better at using a fishing rod than other selkies are.
abbe: he seems like a really average family-man kinda guy so i want him to have some talent that’s just so obscure and ridiculous and totally unexpected. he can juggle with his knees. he has this 6th sense that tells him when it’s going to rain. i’m confirming all this for canon immediately.
roland: he sort of gives me the “intellectual” kind of vibes in a good way and in a bad way. he was probably very good at school/his studies and for some reason history is really sticking out to me the most! while roland and elian don’t really get along i kinda headcanon roland had to tutor elian a lot when they were working through their school books together.
irena: she can play an instrument, i know that much! i haven’t decided what she plays, but i’m thinking some type of fictional string instrument. she teaches elian how to play some instruments, too, because we all know that poor child is bored out of his mind.
anneliese: she loves the whole wide world and reads a lot as a weird form of escapism? reading is her way of connecting to all the people and all the places in the world and it exercises her imagination. she’s probably a SUPER FAST reader and i bet she has a scary-big vocabulary for a girl as young as herself haha.
11. Is your OC really bad at something?
elian: already answered!
abbe: SELF CARE abbe will work himself to the bone and push down all of his personal feelings and hurt to put his family first. i don’t think he wants to be that way but he was kind of forced into that mindset after he had to immediately step up to his dad’s position and then get married on top of that like he had so many big life-altering changes thrown at him within a years time poor boy didn’t even have time to grieve or adequately manage his emotional state.
roland: being an individual haha. more like being openly opinionated and voicing those opinions. he “aaron burr”s the heck outta life with his “don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for” attitude. he doesn’t want to give anyone a reason to start drama with him.
irena: already answered!
anneliese: already answered!
12. Does your OC have both of their parents?
abbe, roland, and elian lost their dad 3 years before the story starts. for a good time after that their mom was not…. entirely there emotionally either so abbe is basically New Dad™.
irena: yes
anneliese: her dad is… kind of in prison?? so like he’s there but not there ya know. and who knows about her mom i’ll talk about that in the next question. anyway her aunt and uncle took her into the family and are basically her new mom and dad congrats anneliese.
13. Does your OC know their parents?
elian: yes
abbe: yes
roland: yes
irena: yes, but she lost contact with her mother years before the story starts and she’s totally uninterested in rekindling the relationship
anneliese: she knows her dad but i haven’t fully decided who her mother is or what happened to her so for now??? my answer is who knows.
14. Does your OC have any siblings?
abbe, roland and elian are all brothers! they don’t have any other siblings haha.
irena: none
anneliese: none but she did have a cousin! they were really close when they were little, almost like siblings. the cousin was the old heiress to the estate but she got a bad illness or disease or something like people did back in the good ol’ days and died. now anneliese is the heiress.
15. Do any of your OCs have pets?
elian: already answered!
abbe: none
roland: already answered!
irena: she might have a nice riding horse but other than that i doubt she has time for her own pet.
anneliese: i haven’t thought about it but she does seem like an animal kind of girl. if she does i can see her having a super fluffy kitty.
16. Do you have any nonhuman OCs?
17. Do you have any OCs you haven’t posted about?
18. How would you describe your OCs nature in one word?
elian: righteous
abbe: altruistic
roland: distant
irena: meticulous
anneliese: dreamy
19. Who is your youngest OC? (i’m combining this question with the other one and just saying their ages)
elian: 13 yrs
abbe: 21 yrs
roland: 16 yrs
irena: 33 yrs
anneliese: 12 yrs
20. Who is your oldest OC?
21. What race is your OC?
they’re all selkies!
22. Would your OC like you?
elian: he would like some things about me, then find other things completely infuriating.
abbe: he’d probably think i was a little too casual and maybe a bit weird, but he wouldn’t hate me either!
roland: i think we’d be cool.
irena: we could have a couple really nice conversations.
anneliese: she would!

Note
9, 10, 18 for an oc of your choice from the selkie story?? (i forget what its called aaaa)
I’M GONNA TALK ABOUT LEWELLA BC SHE’S MY FAVE AAAHHHHH!!!
9. How would you describe your OCs fashion taste?
something movable and breathable. she’s nobility (very low-ranking nobility but nobility nonetheless) but she definitely prefers her knight-garb and work clothes over the dresses she wears to formal parties. red is her favorite color so she likes to accent her outfits with it! if she lived in this time she would be the girl to wear hoodies and leggings and gym shorts to class everyday haha.
10. Does your OC have any special talents?
actually lewella is considered a “prodigy” from where she comes from. she’s witty, athletic, sociable, and pretty much breezed her way through her knight-training. people had have high hopes for her. out of all of these things, i think her main talent is her strategic ability.
18. How would you describe your OCs nature in one word?
honestly.... “surprising” is a good one. her job requires her to be sharp-brained and analytical but she has an attractive/fun-loving personality you would not expect at all haha. lewella seems like an open book but she has a few secrets buried that are a big surprise to elian & the others when they find out.
