My favourite wallet is no longer produced (as far as I can tell), so I decided to copy its pattern and teach myself to sew it. Bonus, I get to use 🖤💜aesthetic🖤💜 colours.

The original is a rugged trifold wallet with velcro closure. The fabric appears to be high-denier nylon or polyester canvas, with a waterproof PU backing.

For my copy, I used a black 400 denier nylon pack cloth with waterproof PU backing; and a puple 400 denier water-resistant polyester canvas with a neat twill weave. I bound the wallet edges in black 3/4" (10mm) wide twill tape, and used a scrap of purple 1" (25mm) wide nylon webbing for the coin pouch pull tab. For thread, I used Glide Trilobal Polyester in "Iris".

I chose Snag-Free Velcro, which has both hooks and loops in the same tape. The loops tend to be just a smidge taller than the hooks, which means you need to press the two tapes together to get good adherence (hence reducing unwanted adherence!). This might end up being a poor choice for a wallet, as I don't typically press my wallet closed with much force, and just folding it together isn't always enough to make the Velcro stick.

On the exterior, there's a little coin pouch with velcro closure

Brand new, there's a clear vinyl ID window on the centre panel of the original wallet's exterior, but this window always breaks in my experience, so I omitted it on mine.

Inside, there are three areas for holding cards, and a bill slot behind the card slot panel.

The left and centre -thirds have two side-loading card holders each; one front and back. In the front slot, the cards are partly visible; in the back, cards are hidden. The right panel also has two card holders, these are vertical-loading; in the back slot, cards are hidden by the cards in front.

I usually keep my tappable bus card in the centre of the bill slot (the area closest to the exterior of the closed wallet), so that I can tap the entire wallet to pay my bus fare. I added an elastic to help keep the bus card in its place, but I'm not entirely sold on this feature yet.

To protect my tappable payment cards, I would usually keep them in an RFID blocking envelope in a vertical card slot panel. But since I'm sewing my own entire wallet, I decided to line the whole card slot panel with RFID blocking fabric.

I also added a little flap to keep my receipts separate from my bills.

This being my first attempt at copying the wallet, I learned a lot in the process!

When this wallet wears out, I'll sew myself another; but with some changes, for sure.

Oh! Also!

The RFID-blocking fabric passed two basic tests:

wrap my phone the fabric (try to keep the wrapping only 1 layer thick); the phone has no reception (tested by sending myself emails; having someone call me; attempting NFC tap) ✅

with a tap-enabled payment card inside, tap the closed wallet at a tap-enabled point-of-sale till during payment; payment does not work ✅

Unfortunately, the wallet also blocks my bus pass. But I'd rather it block too much than too little; I can figure out a different solution for the bus pass.

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out, and am looking forward to making one for my partner!

A quick write up on diapers I've tried and what I think of them.

Tykeables:

Lil Rascals: great print and strong tapes, the absorbant core wicks well and holds the fluids. The core stays together druing activity and the leak gaurds are effective as all tykeables diapers are.

Overnights: the waddle cut feels great and the leg spread enhances the little feeling. This diaper has great performance.

Dinos: my first diaper with hook and loop tapes and a plastic backing. These are thick very thick.

Cammys: my favorite print because camo😍. Thick, velcro tapes with the unfortunate side effect of the print transfering to skin when wearing one for a long time.

Puppers: they don't feel as thick as the cammys and dinos but they are definitely effective at the job they're designed for.

Abu:

Lil Pawz; the gold standard diaper. The perfect amount of padding and performance. The tapes are strong but reasonable adhesive. The leak guards work fantastic, plastic is thick but comfortable. The core wicks and holds moisture great.

Space: same as lil pawz just a different design, see above.

Preschool: one of Abu's simpler and thinner diapers by design. They're made to be worn to work or school as the name suggests.

Peekabu: these feel and perform similar to the megamax. They're thin when you put it on but as you use it they swell a lot.

Cushies: these are thick and swell up nicely. They're single tape so one tape on either side which can affect your overall fit.

Dino rawrz: these run much smaller, closer to the size of the Tranquility ATN in size medium. The diaper has strong tapes but feels thinner. The core locks the fluids into clumps or prills.

Northshore

Megamax: this is the diaper I've been recommending for first time wearers because of its balance of Features vs. Cost. They hold a ton, tapes are strong, leak guards work fantastic.

Supreme: not my favorite diapers currently. The plastic is smooth but stiff just like the core. These get shipped compressed and need to be fluffed. They absorb into clumps but the tapes and leak gaurds are good.

Depend brand:

Depends with tabs, maximum absorbancy; meh, the best protection you'll likely find at a drugstore or box store in the us. Super thin, low capacity, bad leak gaurds, the 3 tape design can be hard to get used to.

Refastenable pull-ups: been a while since I tried these. They don't sag as badly as just the elastic waist. They hold about the same as the plastic depend with tabs but the leak gaurds are nonexistent.

Tranquility:

All Through the Night; best bang for your buck. Second chance tapes, wetness indicator, great capacity for the price, plastic backes, great leak guards, my favorite brand of diapers to open.

ATN Pull-up; the highest capacity and best performance pull-up I've ever tried. They rival the ATN Brief. The leak guards are decent, capacity is amazing, the waistband will give before you max out the diaper

Slimline: same as the ATN but half the capacity.

Bambino Diapers;

Teddies: been around for a long time, cost effective, great looks, plastic feels top notch. Capacity has been passed by but this still remains a competitive design.

Classico; same as the teddies above.

Bianco: the plain white with blue tipped tabs is a great look. Much higher capacity then the original teddies. Its been a long time since I have worn one.

In case, you are going to hire the services of a third party manufacturing company, do an in-depth research on that particular company. Collect information regarding what their users have got to say. Look for online reviews. Unless you are sure about the company do not hire their service.

Moreover when you are tying up with a third party, make sure that you have signed all the documents and the third party has done the same. Legal documents should be in order and copies of those documents should be with both of you. In case of any legal hassle, you will be able to use those documents.

~Devising with the DOOM Spaniels~

You can make a whole lot of variety from very little in the way of real craft supplies. We're still talking about dogs; decorative gear for them doesn't need to be very in-depth. If you have an idea in mind, you can generally scrounge up a lot of useful bits to create your vision.

Let's use the Steampunk Spaniels as an example. Yvaine is wearing a caped coat I made her, but any raincoat or dog coat would do. The scarf is mine, and the long ends are tucked under her belly strap. Tristan's morning coat tuxedo was an after-Halloween sale, but he could wear a dog coat and a scarf too. They've got gears safety-pinned in various places on scarf/tie/coat for fun.

I am going to abashedly admit that I bought the hats and the little metal gears. I originally intended to make the hats from paper and tape, and to draw/cut out gears from paper, but I just could not get my hands to cooperate. You can find easy howtos for hats and printable art for gears, though, if you have reasonably working hand-eye coordination :) You could also draw gears (or other decorations) directly on your props with markers or paint pens.

I did, however, make the goggles. I wanted small, round lenses: bottle caps! I painted them with paint pens; I wanted an antiqued silver look, so I painted them black, gold, and white, then messily scribbled over that with silver. The black looked best, incidentally. Then I glued gears to the front. (Again, you could draw, or cut gears from paper and glue those on.)

Some of the bottle caps (prescription pill bottles) had gaps in the sides, and for others I poked a hole in opposite sides. I threaded a string through the caps, looped it around the hat like a hatband (strung a few more gears on it for entertainment), and tied it. Then I glued the cord in place to hold the bottle caps at the front of the hats. (Thin flexible wire could work instead of string/cord, especially to support a hat that's a little less sturdy.)

Beads, feathers, patches made of cloth scraps, bits of sparkly costume jewelry could all be added to a hat like this for extra touches. Tape, glue, safety pins, flexible wire, or string can secure it in place.

I discussed using flexible wire (pipe cleaners, twisties, scrap wire) to make hat loops, and ponytail holders to make elastic chin straps, in part 1 and part 2.

That chain bracelet was clipped to another bottle cap hung at Tristan's lapel (for a pocketwatch), but it didn't show in any of the pics. Will have to do better making it visible :)

Yvaine's monocle is two pipe cleaners: one twisted together into a circle, with gears in it, and the other twisted into the loop and sticking out from it. The long piece just went under her ear and hooked around her collar, but it could have been attached to the hat, too.

Tristan is holding a telescope from a cheap pirate toy set. I used the same multiple-layer paint pen to get antiqued silver, and glued gears to one end. (Again, designs can be added with pen, paint pen, or cut-out paper.) If you want a telescope, you could probably make one with a paper towel tube. If you have something different in mind, you can probably find something shaped approximately right around the house somewhere.

All together, they're a pair of mad scientists whose steam-powered machines will take over the world.
