Jon gets promoted to general manager but he's basically just a glorified crew member with more work to do and he Still does not get paid enough to deal with the weird customers that for some reason want to tell him their horrible life stories

oh i’m back to thinking about jon defaulting to ‘very annoying’ when he first meets people, specifically about how he and tim (and maybe sasha?) were friends before the archives

timeline-wise jon started in research a couple of years before tim did, so he fully annoyed Everyone Else There for a while

and then here comes tim (fresh out of the trauma circus but jon didn’t know that) and jon is just, there, being annoying and pedantic and alone, and tim takes one look at this absolute disaster and is like oh, perfect, this is my new favorite coworker, and no matter how grumpy jon is or how much infodumping he does or how often he corrects small errors (usually guaranteed to annoy strangers!) tim just listens and sometimes laughs and makes a silly comment until jon finally smiles.

he drags him out for drinks and lunch and minor socializing (and tells jon all about his love life, but crucially does not push jon when he says he’s not currently dating anyone). they work together to research particularly tricky things. tim is new to research but he used to be in publishing so jon gives tim some tips about research and tim proofreads jon’s reports sometimes (that one episode in s1 was not NEW it was what they DID). jon stays late working and tim clocks out but just sits in the office with him chatting and playing games on his phone. their immediate supervisor talks shit to jon and tim just leans back in his chair and casually backs up jon (who was in fact right in this instance) and now everyone knows they are a team.

and they’re such a weird duo in the research department, like sure they’re probably close in age but jon is Grumpy and tim is tim, and then they start hanging out with sasha bcos tim made friends with her one day and brought them all together and now it is all three of them, hanging out during lunch and after work and on weekends. they go to the institute holiday parties together and jon and sasha sit in a corner drinking way too much and making fun of other coworkers, while tim is dancing and socializing but keeps coming back to them. tim tries to bring them on a Sports Vacation and they go along but refuse to actually participate, just sit comfortably nearby and yell jokes/encouragement at him, but it’s still fun.

and jon is still grumpy and web-traumatized and tim is still secretly sad and traumatized about his brother and sasha still hates her job (less since she transferred out of artefact storage) but now they have each other and that helps, it really does, even if they never talk about the things that bother them.

and when elias asks jon to become head archivist he knows he’s not qualified but it’s a promotion and he could use one, so he asks if he can have assistants because there really is a lot to do in the archives and he could use the help, and he knows two people who would be perfect for the job.
