Today, I’m going to share something a little bit different with you. It is the Book of Thoth Etteilla Tarot, which is the Italian Tarot.

It’s not really a traditional tarot in the sense that it has kind of almost playing cards style, pips with secondary images in them for a kind of reverse reading, and it has various annotations in the borders.

The majors of The Book of Thoth Etteilla Tarot are just cool, well, not completely different, but there’s quite a lot of differences. Still it’s a historical deck and one that I thought would be interesting to take a look at this particular version is published by Lo Scarabeo.

I chose it because the look of the borders and the titles and the color palette was the one that most appealed to me from what I could see online.

So we have the Book of Thoth Etteilla Tarot Tarot here, let’s dive on in – the box is quite cute.

The Book of Thoth Etteilla Tarot is designed to actually look like a book. The bindings clasps, so that’s quite sweetly, done the little white book is one of these Mosquera bear little white books with it in five languages, so there’s very little in there.

So, let’s take a look through the cards: there’s a title card and then the first card.

Here we have water plants and yeah so straightaway totally different yeah some plants, air earth travel night and day as a balancing card.

This is the Stars, hence the astrological symbols. I liked that this has the titles typed out, because they’re very hard to read in some of the versions and also the colors have been sort of enlivened a little bit. I think so. This is the birds and the fish.

This is rest or the female querent, and then we have justice. Justice 9, so Temperance is at the position 10, Strength at 11. Prudence that we have all virtues together, really interesting sort of sneaking around a mirror and book marriage. So this is a bit like the Hierophant card really, but it’s number thirteen. Then we have the Devil.

The Magician – yeah – card 15, Judgment comes in at 16, then we have Death at 17. The Traitre – which I guess would be like the Hanged Man a little bit. Oh, but he looks much more Hermit, like so: 18 misery prison and it’s called the the Struck by Lightning Temple. The Wheel of Fortune comes in at 20 and then we have a kind of Chariot style card which is called the African Despot at 21.

Now we move into the suits of The Book of Thoth Etteilla Tarot, so this is the king of ones, the queen of ones, the knight of one’s page of ones.

Then we have obstacles and betrayal for the 10 of one’s the nine of ones, eight of ones. So you have this sort of stuff around it, then the very simple pip like bit in the center seven six, five, four, three all with keywords which is interesting: the two and the ace.

Then we move on to the Cups cards of The Book of Thoth Etteilla Tarot. This is a blonde man. It says, even though his head looks red, but maybe that’s just something around his crown: the Queen of Cups, a blonde woman there she’s.

Not then we have the Knight of Cups, arrival and Page of Cups of blonde boys.

Then we move into the Cups this time with a green sort of intricate border around me, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four three two and Ace so the two, for example, has keyword, love and reversed desire. So there are similarities with the meanings that you find in zuv, Rider-Waite Smith, decks and so forth. But there are also definitely differences like the Ace of Cups has table at the top and change at the bottom.

Then we have the King of Swords, the Queen of Swords, finders widow or bad lady. The military man is the Knight of Swords or ignorance, reversed and spy for the Page of Swords.

We have tears for the Ten of Swords, an ecclesiastical person for the nine or justified defiance reversed. So you know quite interesting, perhaps but not necessarily helpful. In some cases. The Eight of Swords is criticism, hope in the seven very different or sage advice.
