My discussions on Bowie's late 70's should have taken a different road. Yes, I should've considered Young Americans as his dividing line – we are jumping back in time –, since that album showed Bowie to be an intriguing figure. He decide to forsake his glam for soul and he didn't do that bad, to be honest. Sure, he defended himself by calling his style plastic soul – he was very much aware of his position and him playing that brand –, though he did work with many who were cognizant of the style, so he didn't look like a dilletante. He also somehow managed to include John Lennon for some reason as you can hear on the link. Speaking of the tune there – man, what a glorious groove that piece has and I regret rarely tackled the similar style later on.

El líder de Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon, revela: "Mi vida como adolescente giraba en torno a David Bowie. Él es la razón por la que comencé a escribir canciones. Una parte de mí todavía no puede creer en su muerte, pero tal vez sea porque hay una parte de mí donde todavía está vivo y siempre estará… Cuando compramos el disco en vinilo de Ziggy Stardust, nuestra primera prueba de su perfección fue la canción “Five Years”. No puedo explicar lo honrado que me siento que Duran Duran tenga la oportunidad de interpretar a este ícono y colocar nuestro nombre junto a Bowie para esta conmemoración de su música ".

La canción es parte del muy esperado evento tributo de streaming mundial que tuvo lugar en conmemoración del que hubiera sido el cumpleaños 74 de Bowie y el quinto aniversario de su fallecimiento.

Duran Duran presentó “Five Years” en vivo en lo que fue una experiencia virtual cinematográfica espectacular e innovadora: A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day!  Una parte de lo recaudado se destinará a Save The Children, una organización benéfica importante para David Bowie.

“Across The Universe” by David Bowie (1974)

Remakes, by definition, are inferior to originals. Usually.

I initially had The Beatles’ “Across The Universe” as a 5-star song in my library, along with this David Bowie cover, recorded four years after the Fabs’ version was released. The Bowie cover kept rattling around in my head, and I ultimately decided that it was so awesome that I was either gonna have to dock The Beatles a star or figure out a way to create a 6th star in iTunes to give to Bowie. 

Bowie gives “Across The Universe” a sense of soul that’s missing from the original, which is great. The words “nothing’s gonna change my world”, coming out of John Lennon’s mouth, sound hopeful and childlike. Coming out of Bowie’s mouth, it sounds like a statement of purpose. It’s all exclamation points for The Thin White Duke.

Plus, is this the rhythm section of life, or what? Shout out to Ralph McDonald, Pablo Rosario, Dennis Davis & Emir Ksasan. That bottom is crazy. 

I also must add, that “Across The Universe” is a wonderfully written song, and it is impervious to bad covers. To wit: it is the only song that makes Rufus Wainwright tolerable to my ears.
