Notebook Study of Rudolf Koch's lovely vital letters. Gouache and turkey quill. First attempt at these, plenty more to develop! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Koch (1876-1934) was a great master and teacher renowned for his humble and generous presence. His letters have no trace of pretentiousness, and while they are firmly rooted in the tradition of the great medieval and Renaissance masters, they are equally as well rich in a modern graphical impact, with the negative space as powerful, if not more so, as the mark. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ His long time colleague Fritz Kredel cut the woodblocks from which Das ABC Büchlein (the Little ABC Book) was originally printed. I attended a great workshop this weekend with Peter Fraterdeus. Pretty sure we covered a couple centuries in a couple days 😬. This was the first of a new series of calligraphy workshops the @chicagocalligraphycollective is facilitating at The Irish American Heritage Center. I'm super excited to make and grind the blade for my own pen knife, and start practicing cutting quills 😃. These are a couple pics I grabbed. The first 2 images are my experiments using bamboo and a quill. All the other calligraphy pictured is Peter's. The last photo is all the stuff he brought for us to see and play with 😱😱. Snuck out to the "annex" (my studio in exile) this afternoon to pick up some books and got a little bit of ink on Dürer's wonderful majuscules....⁣ (thank you Nicolete Gray) ⁣ And then a short 'Zen foundational' with a passage from Kaz Tanahashi's Heart of the Brush.⁣ ⁣ I think of the foundation alphabet as a mindfulness practice. Western Shodo.⁣ ⁣ Is not about impressing anybody with Gothic filigree, florid flourishes or extravagant flicking or samurai swordplay... I see so much of that flick flick flick flick like calligraphers are swatting flies all over the page. ⁣ F LI C K! Stop it! ⁣ ⁣ My little exercise is not about perfection, although I have a "platonic image" of the letters in my mind. It's got to have a flow and authenticity... It's the record of a meaningfully moving hand and mind. ⁣ ⁣ Still, that platonic image is very important...
