Let’s Move! Beej x Reader

It was currently 2:18 am and you were still on the computer, typing away at anything to continue to type something up for your English class. Your boyfriend, beetlejuice, or Beej for short, was sitting next to you waiting the moment you would close your latop and tell him that you were ready to go to sleep to cuddle. He learned not to rush you, and he learned little by littl about your constant knicks and ticks.

You were currently typing the beginning of a request online known as Cambler where you write short stories. However, soemthing caught at your heart and you were just inspired to write, write, write, write, write, write, write, wi-

You were typing so much adn boucning your legs that Beetlejuice observed you then yelped as he was startled from th fast movements of your hands. You were shaking your hands, were they aching from the constant writing? No, you didn't comment on your pain, but he watched the repetitive movements you made, it looked like you were pretending to strike the drums- oh no...were lsitening to -

He checked the tab that were open to spot the music icon and resd the title next to it. Indeed, it was, curse the autoplay, now he had to wait a lot longer. He shrugged his shoulders and plug the headphones that you bought and lsitened to the music. DRUMS striking incredibly fast, trumoets flying with notes higher than the magical leaf can get you at, you were striking the drums in the air, your gaze focused on the wall and you shook your hands along with bouncing your leg.

He hated that this song captured your full attention for only the 4 minutea and you abandoned all your activities to shake your hands rapidly and hard, almost liek you were mmicking the drums, but he knew better. he knew better because he had done so many times, he fel the music gulfing him down as well, bouncing his leg to the rhythm of th emusic and led his pointer fingers to a beat with his eyes closed. He opened them only to see you in the sam eposition until you began to slow down into a halt, resting you rarms on the desk in front of you.

He calmed down and looked at your arms, "Hey babes?"

Your gaze lowered with a slight head tilt and he inched closer, tapping on your slightly throbbing arm to get your attention. You actually disociated and it was normal for you, needing a moment to just stay in teh silent for the moment. Beetlejuice leaned closer to lift your chin, "Babes to Babes, can ya hear me?" He asked, tilting his head slightly. Your eyes looked so dull, so unresponsive, almost like your body just had a moment to shut down, and now he had to wait. It was hard to pull her out of the zone, it was so longamd dreading and -

How did it get this long, was it passing by slow, or fast? Now Beetlejuice knew he was gonna pay hell for this, but he removed the headphones from his Babes, hearing the melodic of the swng music continuning ti play and he made sure to pause th emusic, "Hey Babes." He softly says, stroking the back of your hand, "Babes, mama?"

Your mouth slightly agaped, you rlips quivered, your fingers had a werird sensations after shaking them for so long, you wanted to snap out, what was going on? WHy was it so hard to get out of here? Oh right, it felt pretty good to just sit in one spot and just not do anything, but beetlejuice was calling you out. Fuck, how to get out of hre? Even you worked twice as hard to snap out. It was like a loop, and you couldn't be able to stop until you actually made a complete halt, but when would that be?

Beetlejuice continued to stroke you rhand, but now he stroked you rarm, squeezing you rhand softly. Your arm trembled, and he felt it. This meant that you stopped for a complete and you were currently looking at your surroudnings, not with your surroundngs but with your sensations. You stuttured in your blinking and you squeeezed you rhand with a light tremble, "Hm?..."

"Hi Babes, Swing and Blues got to you." He stated, and you smiled softly, "Oh yeah..that music makes me want to just...shake everything furiously," you sounded drowsy and he took advanatge, "Wanna lie down and cuddle?"

"Mhm." You responded with a smile and he smiled so big, "Oh finally, jeez babes, you giving me blue balls or somethin'?"

His crude joke made you scoff out a laugh adn your smile slightly while your eyes focused at the keyboard, "Yeah, that's righttt...tttt...t. "

He lifted yoou from the chair and cradled you to the bed, making sure the comforter was on top of you before he got on. He made sure to dress well on for his pyjamas.

"That was pretty hardcore Babes, you okay?"

You nodded softly, "yeah, sorry about that." "It's fine babes, jsut careful. Don't want you shake your arms off your body- that's my job."

You managed to smile before it vanished which made him smile, "Close your eyes Babes, time to sleep."

"Alright, alright, goodnight Honey."

"Goodnight babes." and he kissed your cheek before cuddling against you.

A/N: This just happened to me, and well, you know, it was hard for me not to lose focus but also gain myfocus? That was super weird for me lol. Just a random story.

When in Rome - “The Promise” EMusic: Awesome 80's Song released in 1987. Compilation released in 2000. Synthpop / New Wave

The UK trio of When in Rome were responsible for just one exceptional song and that song was “The Promise”. They really made nothing else of note. Their second single off of their only album, “Heaven Knows,” pales in comparison. The band’s whole existence kind of strains credulity then. Like, how can you be so good, so transcendent as to make a perfect piece of heavenly synthpop like “The Promise” and then never make anything that remotely approaches it ever again? How could you only squeeze out three minutes and forty seconds of magic and then lose your touch entirely? It’s really totally baffling. 

“The Promise” never hit big in the UK, but it turned out to be quite a dazzler in America. The single managed to stay at #1 on the Billboard dance chart for seven weeks and it also peaked at #11 on the Hot 100. And then it picked up a second wind some 17 years later thanks to its inclusion in Napoleon Dynamite. That sudden, unexpected reprisal would then spur on new, confusing incarnations of the band: When in Rome II and When in Rome UK, in which the former is composed of one of the original members, the keyboardist/pianist, Michael Floreale, and the latter has both of the original vocalists, Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann. And then when Farrington and Mann play the States, which is where “The Promise” enjoyed most of its popularity, they’re billed as “Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann formerly of When In Rome” for fear of violating some copyright law and being summarily deported. The whole thing is really silly and petty and dumb. The two factions should just nut up and bury the hatchet and go on those 80s one-hit-wonder extravaganza tours together instead of doing this annoying Gallagher and Gallagher Too shit. It’s embarrassing. Someone should just show up outside the other’s home and reenact the iconic scene from Say Anything, but play “The Promise” instead of Peter Gabriel. You’ll all be better for it. Fuck, I’ll even drive one of you over to do it. I promise you, I promise you I will.

I think there’s a lot of things within “The Promise” that make it an obvious hit, but the overarching theme, at least to me, is all the contrasts you find. The calm, low-note verses and the urgent, high-note choruses; the uptempo drum and bass tracks that form the backbeat and the slower, atmospherically dreamy and rich piano and string synth washes that lie above; a singer who’s bald and scrawny and a singer with long, luscious locks who’s built. Lots of contrasts. 

And cheers to Clive Farrington for programming those drums and bass. I mean, that pulsating, corrugated, fuzzy, purring bassline, man. It’s so simple, but it makes the tune danceable. And no matter where the track is and no matter how complex the composition gets, that bass is just off on its own consistently pumping away. It’s always towards the bottom of the heap, but it’s never too difficult to hear. Also, the second verse, which sees the band pouring on the strings and giving the song an even higher level of dreamlike intensity, adds yet another contrast with a chirping, bleepy synth phrase that plays in unison with that underlying bassline. Another mix of high and low notes.

And lastly, that drum fill that links the verses to the choruses; it’s not quite as iconic as “In the Air Tonight,” but it still hits really nicely. Tell me you don’t drum that part on your steering wheel when it comes on in the car (You do. Don’t lie). 

Okay, one more thing: the music video. It’s phony. Much to everyone’s confusion, it features Andrew Mann (the longhaired fella) performing the verses:

But in actuality, it’s Clive Farrington who’s responsible for singing the first verse and Mann who sings the second. Why When in Rome decided to perpetrate this fraud on all of us remains a total mystery. I mean, it just doesn’t seem to make any sense, and I cannot for the life of me come up with a single, solitary reason as to why they might’ve done this. No one would have batted a single eyebrow if they just showed the two singers leading the respective verses that they actually lead on in the song. Some bands do that. It’s not that weird. I promise you.

See, for instance, in this live, Top of the Pops-ish video from 1988, which also shows Farrington and Mann clearly lip-synching their entire performance, it’s Farrington who performs the first verse instead:

Why sow all this confusion? WHY? I DON”T GET IT. WHAT IS THE POINT? TELL ME WHILE I DRIVE ONE OF YOU OVER TO DO THE SAY ANYTHING SCENE SO YOU GUYS CAN REUINTE AND LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

Hands down, “The Promise” is one of the greatest pieces of 80s synthpop ever recorded. It’s just frankly very weird that these guys didn’t have anything else to give us that was worth listening to. There’s plenty of one-hit-wonder bands, but how many groups make a song that’s one of the best in its genre and then they never deliver anything like it again? In that regard, When in Rome represents one of the most precipitous drop-offs in the history of popular music. But at least we have “The Promise,” right?

“Rivers” -- BUTTERGLORY

I came to Butterglory because the Wedding Present covered one of their songs. I now own most of their records, but only because they were all on eMusic when eMusic was a thing. I like them just fine, but this is the only 5 star song they’ve got on my mp3 player, and for the first 42 seconds that this one played tonight I’d be damned if I could remember why I gave it a fifth star.

And then that piano comes in at 0:43. It’s just one finger, plinking one note, over and over and over again, but it’s everything.

I don’t mean to damn Butterglory with faint praise, but what I love most about this song is how unaccomplished it feels. It’s just a couple of chords, and a somewhat droning melody, which, frankly, any of 1000 bands could, and probably have, played.

But that piano fits in so perfectly, and changes the drone just enough, to make the whole thing feel magical and omniscient.

Beware of the coin men!

I’ve been reading about Blockchain lately... You’ve probably heard of it, at least you must have heard of Bitcoin, and have heard the latest crypto babble that the media enjoys so much. After all a good jargon is the wet dream of every journalist.

Now this technology is supposed to be the remedy to everything... Yes! Even the music industry! And well, if it can cure that, surely it will cure cancer!

Enter Musicoin and co

In the unsigned world, I see some people rave about Musicoin for example, and how this wonderful platform is going to pay out more than any streaming platform and materialize money out of thin air, without any ads, while still being totally free for listeners. That’s pure magic or I don’t know what!

Turns out that Musicoin is only one of the many new platforms with more white paper than sense, apparently. (Boy! Do they love their white papers! They are all chock full of technical jargon that is mostly included to confuse you even more than you were). Digging a bit, without too much effort, I then found out about other platforms like Artbyte, Soundchain, Emanate, eMusic, Bittunes, Voise, Ujo (this one is funny, with Imogen Heap herself having released her “Tiny Human” song which sales amounted to a grand total of $133.20!) plus all these exotic new “currencies” dedicated to music like Musicoin but also Audiocoin, Songcoin, Metal Music Coin, Muse, Beatcoin... looks like they invent a new coin every day. Check out this website which references 1916 entries (as of today anyway!) Actually there is even a platform that allows anyone to do that!

Time for a BeardCoin?

My first contact with Musicoin was from links that some indie enthusiasts were sharing. Being curious I tried to listen, but the player would never want to play, so I went to the website and it looked rather messy to me. Not a really good impression overall. But OK. That’s another beta platform, right? <insert big sigh here>

Since their claim to being able to pay a decent amount per play was pretty extra-ordinary, I decided I would dig further... But I’m going to tell you straight up: I didn’t like what I found. At all.

Monkey money, monkey business

First, the value of Musicoin is in fact so fluctuant that what you read on their platform about the supposed earnings of the artists is never even close to reality. You see, first you have to exchange $MUSIC currency into another more accepted crypto currency (Like Bitcoin or Ethereum), using a convoluted process involving trading on a coin market or another (there are only a couple that can do this at the moment). The process is so ridiculously complex, involving installing a wallet application on your PC, opening an account on a couple trading sites, juggling with obscure hashes and calculating decimals, and gauging whether the time is right to “sell” your precious coins, that only seriously chronic nerds are going to want to go near it. I’m not joking, see this tutorial.

The real cost of Blockchain

The recommended process to ultimately withdraw your few Musicoin earnings is to trade them first against Bitcoin. Of course you will have to pay big fees to do so because the computing of your transaction involves a lot of computers in a pool, and it gets increasingly more complex as days go by, involving increasingly more processing power, and ultimately, increasingly more electricity. Fact is, Bitcoin today is already using 0.5% of the world’s electricity and by late next year, will be consuming more electricity than can be produced by the entire world solar panels. Let this all sink in for a moment. 

And then of course, once you get your Bitcoins fractions, you will have to trade them again on another coin market into some real money, which means a lot more transaction fees (up to 50% from what I’ve seen) and a lot more electricity consumption...

Techno magic

Reading further on the Blockchain craziness, it turns out there is a lot of approximation and misinformation around (but of course there is, it’s a big buzzword in the press, and most journalists have no clue about the underlying technological issues, which are apparently numerous). I also found some articles that took to debunk all this hype, for example this one about eMusic (a Musicoin competitor). Let’s just say that I don’t have all the background that this guy has, but I have the general feeling again (thanks Mom, wherever you are!) that when something looks too good to be true, it generally is! Anyway, the guy wrote a book about the Blockchain scam.

So, to sum up: you get your tunes on a platform that’s pretty buggy (it’s beta), people are going to listen to them for free, you get paid virtual coins that you need to exchange against other virtual coins using a complex process, opening many accounts on various platforms, leaving more of your private information everywhere, trade on a virtual market that is bound to spiral down when all is said and done (remember the internet bubble burst? I do) and is consuming electricity at an exponential rate, which will ultimately eat all our planet resources... what’s wrong with this picture?

The worst of it

All of this and I still have another issue with this whole thing. And it’s another big one: turns out that this whole mess is again making everyone believe that it’s perfectly normal to listen to music for free, that no one needs to pay for it. Aren’t we all tired of this refrain?

If the fact that it’s all based on more hype and technological magic than reality, the fact that it’s unsustainable long term, the fact that it’s endangering our planet resources, if all of that wasn’t bad enough they are also basically saying that music is not worth paying for. 

Finally, the terms of use pertaining to license grants on most of these new platforms were alarmingly similar to the ones I told everyone to stay away from...

In conclusion, you know what? I wish you all good luck with this, but you can count me out. I mean until they come out with something really significant of course, like a BeardCoin for example, at what point I might trade my Monopoly money for it.

Our Jazz/Funk formation "Department Of Jazztice" was based on an fix-idea! But the simplest ideas are stil the best. As for Department Of Jazztice, it took not less of 2-weeks of work, in our home-studio in Nice/France, to pull a succesful composition on the record, called: GIGA-HERTZ FUNK!

Our first 8-minute track, pimped full of Acid & Funky elements, slapped into an perpetual movement of different basslines, FX-effects, smooth operated Tenor and Alto sax - accompany by Mark Edisons magic piano, which freezed even hard boiled old-school enthusiasts in its seats. GIGA-HERTZ FUNK! was symply more as an ordinary production, it was the succesful begin of an growing experience into an new Jazz-direction...

But we would not stop at this point. The following weeks, our concept digged even deeper as expected onto the social-networks, with an rapidly growing fanbase and good critics. Our motivation was great, and stil until now, we did not stopped working to accomplish our mission...

So we had decided, to produce an entire Album in front of christmas - containing 8-tracks of Jazz, Funk and Fusion. Since them, our work has advanced, and is actually in the final phase of the mastering process. A release is expected around the 12-dec on cdbaby, Soundcloud and Reverbnation, and withhin 3-4 day later on itunes, emusic, rhapsody, amazon mp3, play.com and other online retailers...

breathe air into my lungs (a chinese whisper fic) by CynicalMistrust, djhedy, filteredred, jemejem, kahlee_116 [Rated T, 11273 Words, Complete, 2020]

IMPORTANT PREMISE: This fic was written as a game of 'chinese whispers', where each writer could only read the segment that the author before them wrote so keep that in mind: when you see an asterisk, expect things to change wildly!! Similar to a telephone game but all in one fic, it resulted in...an amazing mess.

Including Neil as a merman (the ONLY thing consistent about this fic - go figure), Andrew initially as an overdramatic surfer dude, the Foxes as surfers but also a swim team AND also as navy-men, pagan magic, kidnappings, large sea creatures and sharks, Riko being a bastard (as usual) and many people being thrown overboard from boats that didn't initially exist.

“It All Means Nothing” -- SCREAMING FEMALES

Screaming Females are one of my favorite bands of this particular decade (I guess they started in the aughts, but I don’t think I heard them till 2010 or so). I love all their releases about equally, and though I’m always excited to see them live, I always leave surprised by just how great they were. All I can retain after the fact is the abstract concept of excellence, as though the particulars of how and why they rule are like a dream that loses all its power as soon as I to explain it to anyone else, including myself.

So it doesn’t worry me that I have no idea why I rated this one particular song of theirs 5 stars, and almost all the rest just 4. I don’t doubt my rating, I just can’t articulate the rationale. But I know I mean it -- at least twice in the last several years, this has cropped up on shuffle play in the car, or on the treadmill, and I have scrambled to grab the mp3 player to give it 5 stars before it ends, only to find that I had already done so.

It’s possible this is an artifact of my age -- once upon a time, I had perfect recall not only of which album a given song I loved was from, but its album side and track number, as well, not to mention its relative worth compared to every other track on that same album, but this ability does not apply to more recently released music. Or it might be an artifact of our collective age (the one in which we’re all living, I mean), as Screaming Females are also one of the few bands in my collection whose albums are entirely virtual -- I have never, ever, held one of their LPs in my hands, having obtained almost all of them, I think, through eMusic.

But I’m pretty sure it has more to do with their approach, which is somehow subtle despite presenting itself as a blistering wall of distortion. As powerful as they are in a row -- on record, or, even better, onstage -- their songs benefit even more from being sandwiched in between tracks by other people who lack their particular magic.
