Why Electronic Music and Gaming are Becoming One in the Same
For many in the gaming community, hearing a game’s soundtrack for the first time is as exciting as learning about the game’s development. Where some games use fully composed orchestral music to paint a picture of the story’s arcs, character developments, and changing locations, others use carefully curated playlists of existing tracks to provide a musical backdrop to the story’s action. One of the most popular musical genres in the eyes (and ears) of today’s game developers is EDM.
youtube
Tron Run/r- Trailer, 2016 Developer Sanzaru Games and publisher Disney Interactive Studios turned to one of EDM's pioneers, Giorgio Moroder, for the music soundtrack to this endless runner action game.
EDM can carry a story with energy and emotional power, while at the same time creating an immersive universe of sound for the game’s audience. With artists like Marshmello, Deadmau5, Kaskade, and Skrillex dominating the gaming soundtrack world, it’s no wonder that fans have formed an almost unbreakable connection between gaming and EDM. What’s more, game developers are increasingly embedding EDM content within their games. For example, in games like Fortnite, players can access in-game radio stations featuring exclusive Monstercat tracks. The same is true of Grand Theft Auto V, where gamers have their pick of a number of different radio stations (two of which play EDM) when driving around the game’s map.
youtube
Electronic music and video games have a long history together. In 1993, for example, Mortal Kombat’s theme song, “Techno Syndrome (Mortal Kombat)” produced by Praga Khan and Oliver Adams, hit the airwaves for the first time. The song was originally released as a single and was then included in Mortal Kombat: The Album, the following year. The album featured a techno song for each of the seven playable characters, as well as Goro, and two additional tracks. It also fundamentally changed the way that fans relate to, and consume, gaming soundtracks forever.
youtube
It doesn't get more EDM-focused than this delightful mobile game put out by Nicky Romero's production company for both iOS and Android. Playing as the DJ himself, the goal is to get Romero and his fellow performers to their next gig.
youtube
Daft Punk - Human After All (Remix), from DJ Hero2
Today, EDM continues to dominate the gaming music world. Where EDM artists sometimes struggle to gain the same notoriety as mainstream musical acts in real life, in gaming, they’re included (and celebrated) at every step of the way.  One such example of gaming’s embrace of EDM is that of Fortnite’s massive Marshmello in-game event, which allowed players to attend an in-game concert by the EDM star. The event was attended by over 10 million players worldwide and smashed concurrent player records for the popular game. Fortnite has since included Major Lazer in its roster of characters, doubling down on its commitment to EDM.
youtube
In 2019 gaming accessory company SteelSeries partnered with Nexus Radio as the official headset provider for the Nexus Lounge Amsterdam. Lucas and Steve (pictured above) are avoid Gamers and attended the lounge.
These cultural milestones, like so many others, have not only impacted fans, but the artists themselves. Deadmou5 has said that early video game sounds have had an undeniable impact on the evolution of his music. In 2009, Skrillex created his own video game, Skrillex Quest, complete with its own soundtrack and Skrillex-designed fighting sounds. Steve Aoki was a playable character in Speedy Ninja, and DJ Hero featured every artist from Daft Punk to DJ Shadow. If one thing is for sure, it’s that EDM and the gaming world will never again be the same without each other.

To continue from yesterday’s discussion about Coraline and the dollhouse level of Alice: Madness Returns having Akechi vibes, I present to you one of goth tween Krist’s favorite tunes--appropriately titled “Dollhouse.”
Here it is on Youtube if you do not have Spotify.

today’s super dramatic music post brought to you by this wardruna song that is most definitely the thematic heart of my akeshu fic, and i wanna share it because i want people to be emoTIONAL ABOUT IT WITH ME
English lyrics and a mini analysis under the Read More
The song’s title is “Joy.” Translation taken from here.
The ashes have fallen The earth grey and barren Sprouts spring from their grave Victorious they spring To their first day
I may not be big But my time on earth I shall use and I shall reach Into the blue sky Tears fall freely From joy and from sorrow For all that took place For all that gave place
For the sprout which flowers For the beating heart Tears fall freely From joy and from sorrow For all that gave place For all that took place Tears fall freely From the grey clouds
Up from the soil Rise towards the sun Pure is the feeling Joy!
Little feet Shall roam the earth Without stopping, Dancing in rings Joy!
Up from the soil Rise towards the sun Pure is the feeling Joy!
Little feet Shall roam the earth Without stopping, Dancing in rings Joy!
“Wunjo” is a Nordic rune which are often used in heathen divination. It has several meanings, including joy, happiness, wishes, friendship/bonds, group harmony, and can also stand for their inverse (strife, sorrow, alienation, deception, betrayal).
All of these things, and thus the Wunjo rune, scream Akechi to me.
What makes the song stand out to me is that it’s sung by children and an adult. That contrasting duality (youth, age) is also present in the very concept of Wunjo, and of joy/sorrow as different emotions expressed in the same way (tears).
It is also, ultimately, a rune whose meaning is about love:
It is here we find the force of Love curing the warrior who has hate in his or her heart. Because the Northern tradition was abruptly cut short in its evolution of conceptualizing Love as a cosmic force, we have to search for ideas in the Elder tradition that would indicate its latent potential. We find this idea especially in the rune meaning of Wunjo, for Wunjo carries all the elements of Love between and among human beings. Wunjo is the rune that guides harmonizing human energies into a whole. It is the alignment of individual will with the will of the community and ultimately with the divine will.
I’m also pretty hype about the idea of Wunjo as wishing, wishes being the manifestation of one’s will (the Law of Attraction), and the dangers of cognitive distortions as Persona 5 handles them.
The art of correct ‘wishing’ is perfected by seeking your unique purpose in life and aligning your thought and action with it. It is the motivation to act upon your true will which opens the path to completing your personal purpose in this lifetime. Step by step, life by life, we fulfill our cosmic destiny. This is the essence of the Law of Attraction, and a core magic of the Northern tradition.
Laws of Attraction state that what you think of, what you believe, will manifest as true--even if they aren’t things you like or want. So for example, if you think that you have nothing but bad luck and nothing will go your way, that’s what your will manifests. The positive inverse is also true (in that if you sincerely believe that you will get what you want, then that thing will manifest in your life). While it sounds like magic stuff--and it is--it is also a way to apply the therapeutic benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat mental illnesses.
Advocates generally combine cognitive reframing techniques with affirmations and creative visualization to replace limiting or self-destructive ("negative") thoughts with more empowered, adaptive ("positive") thoughts.
Adhering to the positive impact of Laws of Attraction can therefore be said to clear a therapy patient’s cognitive distortions through the application of cognitive restructuring.
Applied to the idea of P5′s cognitive distortion, the negative side of the Law of Attraction then becomes a malformed perspective of the truth, or a warped wish inside a person’s heart. What they want and why they want it is flawed and twisted, and must be changed, because how the person goes about manifesting it leads to harm.
... Which just makes me think of Akechi and how badly I wish they had kept his Palace in the game. I want to know what the true distortion is in his heart, and if there’s a way to heal it. I want to do for him what the PT did for Futaba, which is precisely why I’m writing Krákrgaldr to begin with, but still... Nothing quite beats canon validation.
And I’m just... so so so Here for the idea of healing the child in Akechi’s heart, the little boy who believed in justice and wanted to fight for it; the little boy who wanted to be accepted and loved; the little boy who grew up hating that he was born at all and could never think of himself as someone who deserved to live at all. I’m So Here for the idea of finding a way to bring that child through all the hurt and hate that cradled him into his young adult life, without Akechi losing his anger or his vicious, hellbent determination to make his own will and justice manifest.
And idk if P5R’s gonna find a way to do it, so I’ll have to write that in the fic myself somehow
To me, the song “Wunjo” celebrates the fine line between joy and sorrow, not as a grimdark or bitter way to show how life is without happiness, but to show that there’s a balance between them. Even something like tears comes from the same emotional wellspring (joy, sorrow) and can’t easily be separated. We express happiness and sadness in the same way (tears), and if I had time to unpack how that makes me think of the final shot of the movie Midsommar, when Dani is crying in agony and then slowly starts to smile, as well as the final tearful, sobbing smile of Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, I would, but instead I just leave y’all to go look up those images yourselves.
... Although now I kinda wanna commission someone to draw Akechi scream-smiling in the Midsommar flower dress.

mod krist has found it y’all: the perfect akechi song. or more specifically, a mix of shido-cognitive!akechi and himself.
i haven’t translated in a while, but i figured i’d give it a go since (1) deg is my favorite band, and (2) a lot of their work gives off an akechi vibe. i also consider this practice for all the translating i’ll do for P5R spoilers.
Anyway! Translation under the Read More, along with translation notes.
Beginning With Disdain
I can only live this way Because I'm worthless, right? I don't feel bad for myself You're the ones who feel like that
This is not for you Laugh--and then despise
Force it down endlessly[1] Always the same words
I'm tired of being alive Desperately struggling
That's persecution
Laugh--and then despise
To all those winners who found themselves Laugh--and then despise
I should just die! Yes, celebrate the scar! I should just die!
This is the only way I can live Because I'm worthless, right?
That's persecution Which side are you on?
Why hesitate? Dear me[2] Thoughtless PARASITE
A paradise of fear[3] Thoughtless PARASITE
I want, more than anything, I want to be worthy[4]
I should just die! Yes, celebrate the scar! I should just die! I should just die! Yes, celebrate the scar! I should just die!
CHAOS MODE
---
[1] Kyo (the singer of Dir en grey) often uses rain metaphors and imagery in his lyrics. An alternate translation of this is “pour down endlessly,” which gives me the impression of rushing water forcing you down.
[2] I struggled with “Dear me” and ended up leaning on the official translation for this. The exclamation he uses (”Ore yo!”) comes off as aggressive, so a similar phrase (but by no means a 1:1 translation) in English with a matching angry tone would probably be something like “for fuck’s sake”.
[3] This is a pun!  恐怖の楽園 - kyoufu no rakuen is as I translated: "Paradise of fear/dread." But another spelling of 'kyoufu' is 京風, meaning "Kyoto style." Kyo, the lead singer of Dir en grey, stylizes his name as 京. So if I'd say the pun is "Paradise of terror/Kyo's style of paradise." It’s worth noting that 京風's "kyoufuu" requires an extra emphasis on the "fu" sound ("fuu").
[4] I struggled a little with this one, too. The official translation is “I want to be worth it.” My interpretation of the line would be that he’s expressing a sincere wish to have meaning and value given to him.
Also--Chaos Mode? LOKI-INDUCED BERSERK. But that’s just my headcanon.

This song always, always reminded me of Goro--his feelings towards his father, towards himself (and the additional imagery of a ‘nest’ and death/carrion certainly doesn’t hurt). I liked it so much that it’s what inspired my fix-it Akeshu fic Let Me Live (which has sadly been on hiatus for a year--really, I am sorry about that. So much has happened in my life that I had to shelve some stuff).
I post about it here because I know for a while there I would post songs or you all would send me songs that reminded you of Goro and/or Akeshu. Feel free to keep doing that if you’d like~ The playlist is endless, after all.

Ok but consider this: Shots by Imagine Dragons is song that really fits Goro ? Idk how to explain but it's just so /him/.
youtube
oh wow, this is… beautiful.
Am I out of luck?Am I waiting to break? When I keep saying that I’m looking for a way to escapeOh, I’m wishing I had what I’d taken for grantedI can’t help you when I’m only gonna do you wrong
I think it comes from the lyrics and how they’re written to express a feeling of resignation + regret + a sort of.. flippant bitterness/acceptance of his failures. These lyrics are a tangle of emotions and thoughts that overlap and instead of contradict, simply show just how knotted up someone can be when they’re confused, lonely, and angry.
For example:
When I keep saying that I’m looking for an empty spaceOh, I’m wishing you’re hereBut I’m wishing you’re gone
I have felt this exact same damn feeling so many times to certain people in my life. I want to be alone but I don’t want to be left alone. I want someone to be here by my side but I don’t want them to invade my personal space or touch me or just… do anything. I just want to have them there as company.
This internal struggle of what the singer wants/needs continues right up through the song, until the very last lines:
From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gunAnd then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I lovedOh, I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved
And this really needs no explanation, I think.
I’m also intrigued by the idea of “Shots” being a layered meaning. Shots clearly referring to all the things the singer destroyed, but also meaning chances, opportunities, etc.

for songs i wanted to recommend "people allergy" but I'm not 100% sure, cause there are some bits that I'm like "oh yeah this definitely fits" and other bits that feel completely wrong so idk XD
Another Vocaloid song, huh? Gotta say I don’t get it. 🤷 But to quote Pat from TBFP, Vocaloids will someday rule the Earth.
youtube
So… basically Goro’s breakdown on the Ruse Cruise. I think this fits nicely.

HELLO I AM A SELF PROCLAIMED EXPERT ON AHA! SO HERE I COME TO SAVE THE DAY. Aha! is actually originally by Imogen Heap by the way! and the song is way more on point than you may think - it's about the singer catching someone red-handed in the midst of a crime (most likely stealing) and blackmailing them to where they must continue to steal, but for the singer's benefit! + how they must place their trust in the singer, yet they know deep down that they're being used and can't trust them........
(posts this and lets the message stand for itself because this is all really interesting!!!! thank you so much, i’ve learned something new today ♥)

Song suggestion for the playlist: Bliss by Muse. It’s not romantic, but it gives me Akechi feels. I think it conveys the mix of jealousy and fondness that he feels towards Ren throughout the game.
youtube
Everything about you is how I’d want to beYour freedom comes naturallyEverything about you resonates happinessNow I won’t settle for less
The tube sequences are like those bits in Okumura’s Palace. Imagine Goro following quietly behind the PT, keeping himself cloaked and distanced, while jammin’ out to this tune?

Undone by ffh? I feel like its from akechis pov
At first I was gonna be like “Undone by what now?” but that’s apparently the group’s name! Interesting.
youtube
Is he saying this to himself, or to Ren? There’s lines that fit every now and then, but it’s kinda touch and go so I’m not entirely sure. I really like the music though–the cellos towards the end, the soft violins, the steady, consistent guitar and quieter drums. It feels like the song never really “bursts” from all the steam it’s building up. It’s just a constant build up of energy and frustrating thoughts.
