To me, Master Eon is the type of guy that says stuff like “I just need to get through this week and then I’ll be ok,” only he’s been saying that every single week for the past five centuries

I’m always thinking about how the Skylanders novels depict Eon as having a telepathic link with each and every one of his Skylanders so that he can communicate with them at virtually any distance within Skylands and provide them with a Portal back home at any time.
I’m always thinking about how Eon has been a Portal Master for many centuries and has likely shared this telepathic link with each one of his previous Skylander teams.
I’m always thinking about the very real possibility that on the day the SWAP Force were caught in the Mount Cloudbreak eruption over 100 years ago, the last thing Eon ever heard from them were their screams and cries for help as they were split in half, frozen, and banished to Earth. Eon couldn’t bring them back home in time.
I’m always thinking about the very real possibility that, in the 100 years between the eruption and the SWAP Force’s miraculous return to Skylands, Eon had lived under the assumption that his team had all died, all at once, and he would never get to hear their voices again, all because he couldn’t activate a Portal fast enough.

plenty of great official illustrations of eon but the one i’m most fond of is this one reeeeally tiny eon drawn in the background of one of the panels from rift into overdrive:

not to get all sentimental about skylanders characters again or anything, but an aspect of the mask of power novels that i will never ever get over is how they gave eon a close friend who is as impossibly old as he is. yeah yeah their friendship’s hardly the focus of the novels and we don’t even get that many moments of the two characters interacting with each other, but the fact that this friendship exists at all within canon is so so so sweet to me.
like. it’s not really alluded to in the games, but in various books it’s repeatedly implied and shown to us that eon—being the last remaining heroic portal master in skylands—constantly overworks himself as leader of the skylanders and has been harboring a fear of failure for literal centuries. despite being surrounded by hugo and the skylanders whom he no doubt loves like family and who certainly share some of his lived experiences, they are still so young compared to him. they haven’t seen what he’s seen, they haven’t lived as long as he has, and after repeatedly outliving his previous skylander teams, he’s come to expect that he’ll outlive this team as well and that hurts.
but he has this one friend. he has this one friend who has also dedicated his life towards protecting skylands. he’s not a portal master and he’s not a skylander, but he’s a warrior. he doesn’t have any magical abilities, but he has a suit of armor. he spends his days within heavily fortified walls, guarding dangerous artifacts and preserving historical records from people who seek to steal and destroy them. he too is burdened with immense responsibility. he too fears failure. he too has been alive for so, so long. in fact, he’s still alive during the events of the games. just. there are these two time-worn souls who find solace in one another and whose days are made brighter upon knowing that the other person exists. i can’t get over that.
also eon’s friend is named wiggleworth and he looks like this and also this

obsessed with the contrast between eon’s characterization in the games vs his characterization in the chapter books. it’s so funny to me. in the games he doesn’t do much outside of giving hints and serving as a bookend. but then in the novels he’s just like. actually a guy. with so many mental health problems.

what she says: i’m fine.
what she means: master eon’s life is simultaneously a tragedy and a horror story. the “eon’s origins” story scroll in spyro’s adventure implies that eon never had a normal childhood because, for a time, he had been a literal child servant working for the portal master nattybumpo. and while various books put nattybumpo in a positive light and he was implied to have been very kind and caring, this does not take away from the fact that not only was eon a child tasked with cleaning, cooking, and tending to various magical/dangerous relics, but as soon as eon activated his first portal at age 8, nattybumpo had begun mentoring him.
he was 8 years old when he learned that he had powers beyond his comprehension. he was 8 years old when someone told him that, one day, the fate of not only his world but that of the entire universe would depend on him. he was a child when he started getting trained in the mystic arts. he was only a child when he learned that if he dared to give up, everyone and everything he’d ever known would be laid to waste. and this isn’t even an exaggeration, because the mask of power novels as well as superchargers confirm that skylands’ portal system is essentially a gateway to all other universes (but also—how else did the skylanders get sent to earth in the first place?). so if eon were to fail to prevent the darkness from taking over skylands, then not only would his world suffer, but all others as well.
what’s even worse is that the mask of power novels lightly touch on eon’s anguish and intense anxieties. several hundred years ago before the events of spyro’s adventure, eon had seen into the future and had witnessed the destruction of the core of light as well as the banishment of the skylanders. imagine living hundreds upon hundreds of years knowing that you will fail? that your friends—the closest things you have to family—will be ripped away from you in an instant and there’s nothing you can do about it? what’s more is that it’s been mentioned in the games and books that eon had been the last remaining good portal master for ages after nattybumpo’s supposed death. he had been working alone—just him, the skylanders, and hugo. no other portal masters to help ease the burden. how do you stay sane and remain hopeful when you’ve not only lived centuries knowing that you’re destined to fail, but also knowing that you’re presumably the last of your kind? eon is simply one cog in a massive machine that is far, far bigger than he can possibly comprehend. a soldier in a war that cannot be won.

i think a lot about that one story scroll in Spyro’s Adventure about how nobody in Skylands knows or understands why the number of Portal Masters seems to fluctuate. there are years where there are many of them, and generations where there are hardly any. i think about what the scroll says about Portal Masters seemingly arriving when they’re “needed most” or something—as if the state of Skylands needs to reach some arbitrary level of awful to warrant a sudden spike in the Portal Master population. i think about how as far as i know, Eon has only ever met two other Portal Masters on the side of good prior to the games. there was his mentor, Nattybumpo, whom he had outlived, and then there was Wizbit—a man out of time. a Mabu pulled from the distant past and into the future. someone whose fate had already been sealed long before Eon had crossed paths with him. i think about how Eon had been working alone for centuries. i think about how he had lost contact with his old friend Wiggleworth for hundreds of years. how many other friends has he lost or grown apart from? how much of his life has he lived alone? how many other Portal Masters did Eon know? how many did he grow up with? was his mentor all he had? did Nattybumpo ever reassure a young Eon that things wouldn’t always be this way? that, Ancients willing, the young boy would never be alone again? because Portal Masters arrive when they’re needed most, right? and Skylands always needs them. Eon needs them. so he’ll be fine, right? he’ll be fine. but then Nattybumpo passes on, and Eon finds himself truly and utterly alone for the first time in his life. but it’s ok. it’s ok. it’s fine. Portal Masters show up when they’re needed most, right? they show up when they’re needed most.
so he waits.
and he waits.
and he waits and he waits and he waits.
and nobody comes.
centuries pass and Eon begins to think that maybe he is the last one. maybe he is the last of his kind. maybe this was a battle he had always been destined to fight alone. sure, he has Hugo. sure, he has his Skylanders. they’re everything to him. they’re all he has. but they’re not like him. it hurts to admit, but they’re just not like him. they’re not Portal Masters. they may all be on the same team, and they may all have the same goal, but their experiences aren’t his. they may share the same burden, but they carry it in different ways.
after what feels like an eternity, Eon finally feels as though he’s come to terms with his fate. perhaps he was always meant to be Skylands’ sole protector. perhaps this is how it’s meant to be.
but then something happens.
he dies.
and then, and only then, do the Portal Masters return.

I strongly believe that some of the best lore introduced in the Mask of Power novels is the fact that Master Eon is best friends with a tiny worm librarian that pilots a mech suit who will not hesitate to kill you with his bootleg lightsaber if you don’t pay your late fees.
