New dub drop! You know what makes that weird Arrival/Departure bit with Hamlet in the anime even better? Neck puns. "We have arrived! One might say we got here at breakneck speed!" I love you silly silly giraffe man.

The script for the big rescue scene is so on point, I love the translation going with "If I died with dignity then who'd be here to help you?" for Usopp's biggest statement.

I have so much to say about episode 1063, felt so many emotions, and took so many screenshots, almost 100! I’m still processing however, so I think a good place to start is to share some of my favorite additions the anime made to the scene. Starting with this “Arrival!” line from best Beast Pirate boy, Hamlet! His lines here and later will cleverly bookend the scene.

As a transman I can't get it how forced genderbend it a nice thing.....I just am so worried they would get horrific dysphoria for their first time and it irks me.....

Genderbend is not bad if it's done well and not sexism (how oda does)

Glad to help people know they aren’t alone in this whole thing. I don’t necessarily hate genderbend - I can enjoy it occasionally in a fanservice way - but honestly most of the time I just find it unnecessary.

Forced genderbend? Fuck that. What happened in chapter 1063/episode 1093 shouldn’t have been treated as comedy. It should have been horror.

I get people thinking fem!Law is hot but the whole context around the scene is just so fucking disturbing that it should have been fan-disservice. I mean, I can only imagine being forced into a body that isn’t your own is nothing short of terrifying. Especially when you consider that this happened mid-battle against one of the most powerful antagonists in the series, so you’re now suddenly in a body that feels *completely off* when you’re fighting for your life. Even without the sexist implication that being in the female body made Law weaker (hate that bullshit and fuck you Toei and Doc Q) it’s still jarring ashell and something like that could get you killed in this kind of situation.

I could get into the full implications of just how dark and horrifying I feel this scene really is (and perhaps someday I will with it being tagged as such), but for now, I have to say that, while Oda was sexist, I’m more disappointed in the fandom over it than him. Oda I sadly expect to some extent. The fandom? Yeah, the obsession they immediately had over it and the way the tag has been flooded with people going gah-gah over it and fetishizing it and (in the case of one zine server that I ended up leaving in part because of this) even using it as an excuse to ship Law with Blackbeard instead of calling out the sexism and transphobia and fetishism and recognizing it as horror…

Yeah, not a fan. It’s not canon as far as I’m concerned. I can accept people thinking the fem!Hearts are hot, and people can draw and write what they like. I won't bash anyone for it and I respect that some people see it as harmless. But I’m just really not thrilled that more people aren’t calling out how problematic the whole scene is. I’d probably be a little less pissed at the fandom if I saw it more balanced, with both simping AND pointing out how bad that scene really was.

Alas, fandom gonna fandom, and I won’t let them ruin my love for the Hearts. I'll just keep doing what I always do and write them being awesome, funny, competent pirates who absolutely are their captain's hype squad. They can say he looks great as a girl and believe he can kick ass in any body, but the reaction they had over it, and the fandom's continued reaction, just gives me the ick.

Alright, time to really have fun with this. I was so excited for this to finally get animated. Did I hope for something like the little flashback of bickering over food? Something wonderfully weird like the Kanjuro fights? Yes. But I am way happier with letting this moment speak for itself. With only minor tweaks, just showing a little more of what’s implied, very few panels held about six and a half minutes. And it is amazing. The canon moments look great, but one thing seeing this excellent shot of Izo in color made me realize...am I the only one getting Fire Festival vibes out of the circular muzzle flashes? His return is a wish granted. Either way, jacked shirtless Izo in full anime glory is doing things to me so let’s move on to additions. This scene is giving the moment gravitas their way, by forcing you to stop and notice the subtleties:

But first...what the fuck was this!? We stan Hamlet, anything that let’s him be his lowkey weird self is appreciated. Wait, is that the joke? “Ham”let? I know that’d be using the English pun while the chapter title was actually the Japanese cliche (Radish actor) but it isn’t like that never happens in One Piece. Either way, he is a total ham and this last leg of the Raid made me love him. But what the fuck is this arrival/departure thing!? Okay, it’s one thing to initially think that maybe we built up a storyline that was gonna have a little more in the finale but it had to get axed with the hiatus. But why would you keep teasing it in fleshed out anime scenes? Bare minimum it’s solidifying the intent of Kiku’s turn here; finally forcing her to accept people want you to have this fresh start tomorrow. That is a consistent canon subtlety. Kiku & Izo’s story moves past the “dawn” motif to well, that dead end. Time to talk tomorrow. Speaking of...

Izo said stop talking. I wish you would have heeded his words. Ow, way to twist the knife girl. I make a whole blog for ya and this is how you return the favor? Foresight is a bitch sometimes. I love the bright light for this by the way. Kiku as a rule is always shown as being a step ahead. Biggest example being the big caste theme. So here’s her “dawn.” Your fight is now finished, and like Luffy you get to snooze for the getaway.

This is my favorite one though. We get this cool little thread of Kin/Kiku opening their eyes as Usopp continues. But the first one, right after calling them suicidal samurai...the little blush. Truth hurts.

Quickly want to mention a minor change the anime made to this scene which I forgot to yesterday.

I like that the anime has Usopp standing in front of Kin and Kiku here(compared to behind them in the manga,) putting himself between the enemy and those he is protecting makes more sense I feel, is a great framing for the scene, and puts those he’s trying to protect in better focus for the viewer.

It’s worth noting that Kiku has her scabbard here too. I wonder if it will be in the next episode she appears in or if the anime team will leave it out. Hmm.

i’m on one piece ep 1063 (the one where usopp and izo find kin’emon and kiku heavily wounded and get attacked by some gifters)

i feel like usopp could’ve had a bigger moment here. his whole arc is growing to be less cowardly, and sure he fights the gifters head on, but i think a better moment could’ve gone like this

Usopp (with maybe a bit more serious injuries from Ulti’s headbutts earlier in the arc) with Kin’emon’s legs find the rest of Kin’emon and Kiku mortally injured. Usopp is horrified, furious with the Beast Pirates, and desperate to get both of them help. He’s crying and comforting them, when a bunch of Gifters find them and try to ensure their death. Usopp tries to attack with his slingshot but it does almost no damage, and out of desperation, a burst of Conquerors Haki comes out as Usopp cries and screams. He gives a speech to Kin’emon and Kiku about how he admires their mindset, but he also convinces them that they have to live through this. He is going to get them medical help and they will live, and each of them trying to sacrifice themselves won’t do any good. He seems very shocked that he was able to knock the Gifters out and assumes it was a fantasy of his or someone else’s abilities, so he runs with Kin’emon and Kiku to go find Chopper.

i’m not saying the original is bad, and i know giving usopp conquerors haki is a massive change, but he is pretty much unaware of it, and it would fit his character a lot. also, he has lied about having conquerors before, so it’s going to come true. usopp really needs more big moments of character development, and i think having a scene like this where he’s more desperate and less “i want to run away from this scary situation” his first immediate thought is “i need to help my friends survive” and his conquerors haki releases when he needs it most.

also all the stuff with izo would still happen, it would just be a new wave of gifters

fair warning this post obviously contains spoilers bc I’m talking abt a pretty recent episode. also all screencap credit goes to hellominju.com

First off, the Usopp sequence was beautiful, it really did him justice. Flashing to some big moments in Dressrosa, it highlights the major challenges he had to overcome as he motivates Kin’emon and Kiku to not give up on life. This was very refreshing for me because Usopp took a bit of a backseat this arc in that he didn’t have any major screen time during Onigashima.

Then of course it’s followed by a silly moment of Izo being like “God Usopp!!” and “Of course I know you, you’re the king of sniping!” I didn’t know Izo was a fellow Usopp stan but hey, the more the merrier.

Overall, this episode was pretty good, I give it a solid 8/10.
