The Silver Storyline

I began watching Silver in 2008, almost from the beginning of 90210. What initially drew me to her was the fact that she was a television character created for another series, redeveloped, many years later, as a teenager in a spin-off, apparently in the hope that she would help the ratings of the series. 

Being one of the main stars, she was in for a hard time as all the favorable conditions for a dramatic development of her life were there (she was a child from a broken home with a substance-abusing mother and a manic-depressive brother) and possibilities abounded. In the first season of the series, she decides to present a film of her and her boyfriend having sex as a school project. The explanation for this is that she suffers from manic depression. In season two, having gained total awareness about her situation and set to make a new start, she learns that her estranged mother is dying from cancer. As a reward, she gets the series’ hottie, breaking up with him in season three because he’s gay. Shortly after, she develops romantic feelings for a childhood friend, who also happens to be the boyfriend of her best friend, and, despite the fact that it was wrong, has a secret affair with him (the Kelly Taylor gene apparently plays a part here). Naturally, her best friend finds out, and a vicious cycle of revenge begins, which involves a nude picture of Silver that is emailed to the entire school, a tap water poisoning in Mexico, and, as a coup de grace of sorts, a switching of Silver’s bipolar medication with unknown pills. Silver, however, survives and even manages to get the upper hand (after all, the whole pill switching thing was a bit too much). 

In season four, the now adult Silver, having been rejected from her dream college (manic episode during her interview with the guy from NYU), decides to stay in Los Angeles so that she can be close to her friends and move in with her boyfriend (the one she stole from her friend), who happens to have serious family and legal troubles. Unsurprisingly, her relationship with her fiancé enters a downward spiral when his mobster uncle threatens her life.      

Still, she doesn’t stay single for long. Totally out of the blue, she meets a wonderful guy who makes her feel that she can have a life far from all this drama. But only for a brief spell, because a few episodes later we find out that her new beau happens to have adopted the daughter of her ex-best friend (the girl that tried to do her in), and so she ditches him. 

Towards the end of the season, Silver finds out that she has the BRCA gene – that is, a genetic tendency towards developing breast or ovarian cancer. Before undergoing a preventive cancer treatment, she asks her gay best friend to donate his sperm so that she can become a mother. He accepts, but then things get complicated again because he wants joint custody. In the end, they only speak through lawyers and hire a surrogate mother, who unfortunately miscarries later on. 

This story had massive development potential, and could have continued in season six, but the network decided to cancel the show before the end of season five. In the last episode to be filmed, Silver is single (in contrast to the other cast members who are in relationships) and, having lost her chance of becoming a mother, has just found out that she has cancer.

I don’t think sexuality is black and white, it’s more of a spectrum. Yeah, there are some people who are 100% gay or 100% straight but honestly most of us fall somewhere in the middle. It just depends on where we are and who we are open to falling in love with.

Erin Silver

Erin Silver was born eighteen years ago in the hit TV series Beverly Hills 90210. Daughter of the ex-drug addict Jackie Taylor and the successful orthodontist Mel Silver, and half-sister of the show’s stars, Kelly Taylor and David Silver, Erin wasn’t particularly interesting as a character, only making brief occasional appearances to support the development of the plot. 

The series finale, aired in 2000, seemed to be the last time we would see her: she was nine years old, serving as a flower girl in her brother David’s wedding to Donna Martin. In 2007, the CW Television Network announced the launching of the spin-off series 90210. The Wilson family moves from Kansas to Beverly Hills, where the father of the family is to serve as the new principal of the legendary West Beverly Hills High School. On the first day of school, the daughter, Annie Wilson, meets an eccentric girl called Silver. 

In modern television series, just like in Greek drama, the characters, their background, the plot and its importance have a fluid character. Clytemnestra has one status in Iphigenia at Aulis and another in Electra, and the role of Creon changes from Oedipus the King to Antigone. In the spin-off, Silver –who, just to be cool, now goes by her last name– bears no resemblance whatsoever to the blond, nerdy girl in Beverly Hills 90210. Highly eccentric, often irreverent, drama queen, she is following in the footsteps of her brother David, but instead of hosting a radio show she has a risky blog, which she uses to discuss intimate details about her school peers. After school, Silver hangs out in abused women’s shelters, since her home situation is tough. After her parents separate for a second time, her mother turns to drinking again, and her father, who has remarried a much younger woman, just isn’t there for her. Nor is her brother, who has moved to Japan with his wife Donna and their little daughter. So Erin moves in with her sister Kelly, the now pathetic guidance counselor of her school, in her well-appointed house in Venice, or perhaps Long Beach, and soon enough we understand that Silver’s irreverence and penchant for dramatics can be explained by the fact that she suffers from manic depression. 

Looking back at little Erin’s scenes in Beverly Hills 90210, I’m afraid that I cannot see a connection between little Erin and the teenager Erin. Her character was originally a girl called Daphne, and the writers of 90210 did a last-minute rewrite of her part, changing her name to Erin Silver, so that it would echo the megahit that spawned it, targeting not only the teen girls demographic but also the generation that grew up with these characters. Who wouldn’t want to see the new adventures of Kelly, Donna or David Silver? Most of these seasoned actors didn’t show any interest in revisiting the character that made them famous, and so the chance of seeing again David Silver, Dylan, Steve or Brandon Walsh (although Jason Priestley directed one episode) was lost. Yet the female stars were more cooperative: Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh) and Tori Spelling (Donna Martin) appeared in two episodes of the first season, for no apparent reason, whereas Jenny Garth (Kelly Taylor), as her sister’s guardian, made it to the second season. Then the new producer, Rebecca Sinclair, ventured a departure from nostalgia, focusing exclusively on the new generation of characters. Today Silver is nothing but a character in a teen TV series who is struggling in every which way to survive, without shouldering the burden of her famous siblings and their friends, and will probably come to an end together with the series, long before finishing high school, being grateful nonetheless for having a second chance to meet us again.

The Silver Storyline

Τη Σίλβερ ξεκίνησα να τη “παρακολουθώ”  από το 2008, από την αρχή σχεδόν της της σειράς 90210. Αρχικά με τράβηξε σε εκείνη το ότι ήταν ένας τηλεοπτικός χαρακτήρας που είχε δημιουργηθεί σε μια άλλη σειρά και αρκετά χρόνια αργότερα, αναδομηθήκε ως έφηβη σε ένα spin-off ξεκάθαρα για να βοηθήσει στο να κάνει νούμερα η καινούρια σειρά. Ως μια από τις βασικές πρωταγωνίστριες “ταλαιπωρήθηκε” ιδιαίτερα, το έδαφος για τη δραματική εξέλιξη της ζωής της εξάλλου ήταν πρόσφορο (παιδί διαλυμένης οικογένειας με αλκοολική/τοξικομανή μητέρα και μανιοκαταθλιπτικό αδερφό) και οι επιλογές πολλές. Στο πρώτο κύκλο της σειράς αποφασίζει να παρουσιάσει σαν σχολική εργασία μια ταινία οπού εκείνη και ο φίλος της κάνουνε σεξ. Η εξήγηση για αυτή τη συμπεριφορά είναι πως είναι μανιοκαταθλιπτική. Στο δεύτερο κύκλο απόλυτα συνειδητοποιημένη για τη κατάστασή της και έτοιμη για μια νέα αρχή μαθαίνει πως η εξαφανισμένη μητέρα της πεθαίνει από καρκίνο. Ανταμείβεται με τον πιο ωραίο γκόμενο της σειράς που όμως στο τρίτο κύκλο χωρίζουν γιατί είναι γκέι. Σε εκείνη τη φάση παραέρχεται κοντά και ερωτεύεται το παιδικό της φίλο και γκόμενο της κολλητής και παρόλο που δεν είναι πολύ σωστό τα φτιάχνει κρυφά μαζί του (εκεί παίζει ρόλο και το γονίδιο Kelly Taylor). Φυσικά η κολλητή της το μαθαίνει και αρχίζει ένας ανελέητος κύκλος εκδίκησης που περιλαμβάνει γυμνή της φωτογραφία να αποστέλεται σε email σε όλο το σχολείο, δηλητηρίαση από νερό βρύσης στο Μεξικό και ανταλλαγή των χαπιών της για τη μανιοκατάθλιψη με άλλα που προφανώς ήταν αέρας κοπανιστός, ώστε έτσι να την αποτελειώσει. Επιβιώνει πάραυτα και βγαίνει και από πάνω (γιατί όσο να ναι και η άλλη το παραχόντρυνε με τα χάπια). Στο τέταρτο κύκλο ως ενήλικη πια και έχοντας απορριφθεί από το πανεπιστήμιο των ονείρων της (μανιακό επεισόδιο κατά τη διάρκεια της συνέντευξής της με τον ΝΥU τυπά) αποφασίζει να παραμείνει στο Λος Άντζελες κοντά στους φίλους της και να συζήσει με τον αγαπημένο της (αυτόν που έκλεψε από την άλλη) ο οποίος όμως έχει πολύ σοβαρά οικογενειακά και νομικά θέματα. Η φάση που ο μαφιόζος θείος του καλού της την απειλεί με τη ζωή της σηματοδοτεί προφανώς και την αντίστροφη μέτρηση για τη σχέση τους. Όμως και πάλι δεν θα μείνει μόνη για πολύ. Εντελώς στο άσχετο γνωρίζει ένα εξαιρετικό παιδί που θα τη κάνει επιτέλους να νιώσει πως μπορεί να ζήσει μακριά από όλο αυτό το δράμα. Για λίγο όμως διότι λίγα επεισόδια αργότερα μαθαίνουμε πως ο καινούριος γκόμενος είναι ο θετός πατέρας της κόρης της πρώην κολητής της (αυτής που πήγε να τη ξεκάνει) οπότε πάει και αυτός. Προς στο τέλος του κύκλου ανακαλύπτει πως έχει το γονίδιο BRCA, δηλαδή γενετική προδιάθεση για να παρουσιάσει καρκίνο μαστού ή ωοθηκών. Στη διαδικασία να πάρει μέτρα πρόληψης ζητά από τον γκέι κολλητό της να γίνει δότης σπέρματος ώστε να μπορέσει να βιώσει τη μητρότητα. Εκείνος δέχεται όμως αργότερα τα πράγματα περιπλέκουν πολύ γιατί αποφασίζει πως θέλει να μοιραστεί τη κηδεμονία μαζί της. Φτάνουν στο σημείο να μιλάνε μέσω δικηγόρων και καταλήγουν να μισθώνουν παρένθετη μητέρα που δυστυχώς όμως στη συνέχεια απέβαλε. Η ιστορία αυτή είχε πολύ ψωμί και θα συνεχιζόταν πιθανότατα και στον έκτο κύκλο αλλά τελευταία στιγμή το δίκτυο αποφάσισε να ακυρώσει τη σειρά λίγο πριν το τέλος του πέμπτου και έχοντας ήδη γυρίσει σχεδόν όλο το τελευταίο επεισόδιο με τη Σίλβερ, μόνη (σε αντίθεσή με όλους τους υπόλοιπους συμπρωταγωνιστές της που είχαν ζευγαρώσει) όχι μόνο να έχει χάσει την ευκαιρία της να γίνει μητέρα αλλά να έχει μόλις ανακαλύψει πως έχει καρκίνο.

Η Erin Silver γεννήθηκε πριν από 18 χρόνια στη χιτ σειρά Beverly Hills 90210. Κόρη της πρώην τοξικομανούς Jackie Taylor και του επιτυχημένου ορθοδοντικού Mel Silver και ετεροθαλής των πρωταγωνιστών της σειράς, Kelly Taylor και David Silver, η Erin δεν είχε κανένα ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον σαν χαρακτήρας και εμφανιζόταν κατά καιρούς ώστε να  “χρησιμοποιηθεί” στην εξέλιξη της πλοκής. Στο τελευταίο επεισόδιο της σειράς, το 2000. φαίνεται να είναι η τελευταία φορά που θα τη συναντήσουμε, είναι πλέον εννιά ετών και  εμφανίζεται σαν παρανυμφάκι στο γάμο του αδερφού της David με την Donna Martin. Το 2007 το τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο CW ανακοινώνει την έναρξη της spin-off σειράς 90210. Η τετραμελής οικογένεια Wilson από το Κάνσας μετακομίζει στο Beverly Hills λόγω της μετάθεσης του πατέρα στη θέση του νέoυ διευθυντή του θρυλικού West Beverly High. Τη πρώτη μέρα του σχολείου η κόρη, Annie Wilson, γνωρίζει ένα εκκεντρικό κορίτσι με το όνομα Silver. Όπως και στις αρχαίες τραγωδίες, έτσι και στις σύγχρονες τηλεοπτικές σειρές οι ρόλοι, τα γεγονότα, η βαρύτητα τους, η ιστορία τους, όλα είναι μεταβλητά. Άλ��η η θέση της Κλυταιμνήστρας στην Ιφιγένεια εν Αυλίδη και άλλη στην Ηλέκτρα, διαφορετική σημασία έχει ο ρόλος του Κρέοντα στον Οιδίποδα Τύραννο από ότι στην Αντιγόνη. Στο spin-off η Silver – συστήνεται πια με το επώνυμο της για λόγους στυλ – δεν θυμίζει σε καμία περίπτωση το κατάξανθο ξενέρωτο κοριτσάκι του Beverly Hills 90210. Ιδιαίτερα εκκεντρική, πολλές φορές αντιδραστική, Drama Queen, ακολουθεί τα χνάρια του αδερφού της David, αλλά αντί ραδιοφωνικής εκπομπής διατηρεί ένα αρκετά επικίνδυνο μπλογκ όπου ανελέητα ξεφωνίζει διάφορους συμμαθητές της ενώ μετά το σχολείο αράζει σε καταφύγια για κακοποιημένες γυναίκες μιας και τα πράγματα στο σπίτι είναι άσχημα. Οι γονείς της έχουν χωρίσει για ακόμη μια φορά, η μητέρα της το έχει ξαναρίξει στο ποτό, ενώ ο πατέρας της έχει ξαναπαντρευτεί μια μικρούλα και δεν πολύπάρχει στη ζωή της. Το ίδιο και ο αδερφός της ο οποίος ζει πλέον μόνιμα στην Ιαπωνία, με τη γυναίκα του Donna και τη κορούλα τους. Μετακομίζει με την αδελφή της Kelly, μίζερη πλέον guidance counselor του σχολείου της, στο περιποιημένο σπιτάκι της στη  περιοχή της Venice ή μήπως κάπου στο Long Beach και λίγο αργότερα θα καταλάβουμε πως όλη η αντιδραστικότητα και το υπερβολικό δράμα έχουν την εξήγηση τους, η Silver είναι μανιοκαταθλιπτική. Ξανακοιτάζοντας σκηνές με τη μικρούλα Erin στο Beverly Hills 90210 δεν μπορώ να βρω τη σύνδεση με την τωρινή έφηβη Silver και όχι άδικα. O χαρακτήρας της αρχικά δεν ήταν εκείνη αλλά κάποια άλλη με το όνομα Daphne, Οι σεναριογράφοι του 90210 ξαναέγραψαν τη τελευταία στιγμή το ρόλο της αυτή τη φορά με το όνομα Erin Silver ώστε να μπορέσουν με ένα έξυπνο τρόπο να συνδέσουν τη σειρά με την επιτυχιάρα που την είχε “γεννήσει” και έτσι να προσελκύσουν μεγαλύτερη γκάμα τηλεθεατών, όχι μόνο αυστηρές έφηβες αλλά και όλη αυτή τη γενιά που μεγάλωσε με τους ήρωες αυτούς. Ποίος δεν θα θελε να ξαναδεί τη Kelly, την Donna ή τον David Silver σε νέες περιπέτειες;! Οι περισσότεροι από τους βετεράνους αυτούς ηθοποιούς δεν έδειξαν να ενδιαφέρονται να ξαναπαίξουν τους ρόλους που τους έκαναν διάσημους, και έτσι η ευκαιρία να ξαναδούμε τον David Silver, τον Dylan, τον Steve ή τον Brandon Walsh (ο Jason Priestley σκηνοθέτησε ένα επεισόδιο) χάθηκε. Οι γυναίκες ήταν πιο διαλακτικές οπότε η Shannen Doherty (Brenda Walsh) και η Tori Spelling (Donna Martin) εμφανίστηκαν σε δύο επεισόδια στο πρώτο κύκλο της σειράς χωρίς να υπάρχει ιδιαίτερος λόγος ενώ η Jennie Garth (Kelly Taylor) ως κηδεμόνας της αδελφής της πρόλαβε και το δευτερο κύκλο. Αργότερα η νέα παραγωγός, Rebecca Sinclair, πήρε το ρίσκο να απομακρυνθεί από το παράγοντα νοσταλγία και να εστιάσει αποκλειστικά στη νέα γενιά πρωταγωνιστών. Η Silver είναι πια μόνο και μόνο ένας χαρακτήρας μιας εφηβικής τηλεοπτικής σειράς η οποία παλεύει με κάθε τρόπο να “επιβιώσει”, δεν κουβαλά πλέον των βάρος το διάσημων αδερφών της και των φίλων τους και πιθανότατα απλώς να “τελειώσει” μαζί με τη σειρά πριν καλά καλά τελειώσει το λύκειο, χαρούμενη ωστόσο για τη δεύτερη ευκαιρία που της δόθηκε να τη ξαναδούμε.
