Anyone But You does its very best to claim the throne of the 2000s romantic comedy by doing what the 2000s rom com did best: adapting a Shakespeare play in a loose "modern retelling" that stars two hip young actors grown in test tubes to look pretty on the red carpet. We lost this formula with the onset of the Apatow-era self-aware rom coms that were just a little ashamed of being romantic. Anyone But You has its eye on the prize, and with a norton's anthology Shakespeare collection (Much Ado About Nothing dogeared and bookmarked) it's doing its best to claim the return of the rom com.

I'll admit that many parts of it felt too slick. Digital photography and clumsy scripting give the film a bit of a rawboned feel, and certain directing, editing, and delivery choices don't help the film either. For all their unrealistic attractiveness, Syndey Sweeny (attempting to craft what I can only describe as a "sexy mumble") and Glen Powell (eternally squinting like he left his shades on the set of Top Gun) serve as basically an undercooked Stone/Gosling pairing in this film, and though they certainly pull it off, you can tell that with a few more films and time to grow as actors they have the potential to execute a film like this in a much more elegant manner.

Of course this is directed by the guy who did Easy A, and so of course he knows what he's doing. Most of the dialog was witty enough to make me laugh in the theater, and the film is overall a feel good rom com unashamed of unrealistic cheesy situations.

There's a segment about midway through the film, where Sweeny and Powell discuss "selling" the image of romance to their audience (family they're trying to placate in order to ease the stress leading up to a wedding). In this scene it basically sums up the strategy of the entire movie as Sweeny notes that they can't be afraid to lean into the cheesiness if they want to emphasize their puppy love. The movie follows this ethos, and I think it works for it. Sure, this isn't a Nora Ephron joint, but the earnest corniness gains it a certain shine that few modern rom coms can readily achieve.

The diegetic cameos of various Shakespeare quotes plastered on walls or written in neon were a nice touch. Once again they leaned in and it paid off.
