“Relentless. Both fighting for life. For one, two young cubs to feed. The other, to witness another sunrise.”

The Etosha National Park (from 1958) is located 435 km (Okaukuejo Camp) or 530 km (Namutoni Camp) north of Windhoek. The park can be entered through either Von Lindequist Gate (Namutoni), Andersson Gate (Okaukuejo), Galton Gate (West), or King Nehale Gate (North). It is one of the Africa’s largest parks covering area of 22 270 square kilometres. The Etosha pan’s size is 4 590 square kilometres, while all pans cover more than 5 100 square kilometres. The word “etosha” means place of dry water or, according to other sources, huge, white area. The park was originally proclaimed by German governor Friedrich von Lindequist in 1907.

Life in Black and White.
Dozens of plains zebras showed up to drink at Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Packed closely together and moving as one, the zebras lowered their heads to get water and, almost immediately, robotically lifted them again to scan for danger. This went on for five minutes, and their stripes reminded Lucas Bustamante of a living barcode. #

Etosha National Park is unique within Africa. The main feature of the park is the salt pan, which is visible even from space. Nonetheless, there is a lush wildlife population that congregates at waterholes, so animal sightings are guaranteed. Okaukuejo is the name of a former German police and military station in Namibia located in the south of today's Etosha National Park. The place was originally called Okakwiya, "the woman who gives birth to a child every year".
---------------
