Albums of the Week! The top spot goes to Hoaxed - Two Shadows (2022). This album was included among my recent contest winnings from The Metalhead Box, and I’d never heard of the band. Turns out it’s awesome. The ultra-clean and melodic female vocals accompany a grooving, heavy rhythm section, and the songs are quite memorable. I love discovering new music like this! ⚔️ Necropanther’s excellent new release stays on for another week, as does Ettinskjalf’s. Haunt is releasing a new greatest hits compilation called “Chariot, Vol. 1,” which includes remixed and remastered versions of their finest work. Do you like Power Trip? Albums of the Week! It was an Alice In Chains marathon for the holidays here, with the Music Bank box set on heavy rotation. Also, Black Sabbath’s Cross Purposes - Live got a lot of love. I maintain that the Tony Martin era is criminally underrated, and I curse all the burnout Ozzy diehards that gave me false warnings about it when I was a young metalhead. ALBUMS OF THE WEEK! I had so many good albums on repeat here that I’m posting a bonus row and column. The winner was #IronMaiden’s Killers. @nightwalk_merch recommended Firtan - Marter to me, and I loved it (German black metal). The new drops from #Ashes and #Aethyrick are excellent (atmo BM). #Eallic’s Karens is a super fun ride (Utah DM). The #BlackSabbath album I thought I’d never like (Seventh Star) somehow earwormed its way into my rotation, and I’m upgrading it to “not half bad” (from “all bad”). ALBUMS OF THE WEEK! Here are the albums that got me through the last seven days. Basically a lot of solid black metal, a dash of doom, and some Beatles (my daughters deemed that suitable for when I drive them around). I want to specifically point out the new EP from @night_of_the_vampire because it surprised me by how addictive it is. This is synth-driven black metal, and I wasn’t sure I’d like it at first because of my historic allergy to keyboards. Ettinskjalf - Depraved and Deceived (2021). This just arrived all the way from Germany today. This album was released in mid-December, after I’d already made my “best of 2021” list. I wish I’d waited, as Depraved and Deceived would rank very highly. It’s my favorite recipe of black metal: emotive atmosphere, hypnotic rhythm guitar, righteous anger in the shrieking vocals, great production with a raw edge. The dudes were kind enough to sign my booklet before shipping it across the world. Thanks, guys!
