My Favorite Beetlejuice Animated Series Episodes (Just Because)

Season 1, Episode 3: Skeletons in the Closet

There’s two things I really love about this episode; first being that it really helps to show early in the series that Beetlejuice is a lot more prone to squishy-heart-feelings than he likes to let on. We see that in prior episodes in relation to Lydia (like the lengths he goes to get Lydia a present in “Critter Sitters”) but in this we see that it extends beyond just her, despite how much he might protest otherwise. The skeletons tell Jacque that Beetlejuice really likes him, despite how he pretends otherwise, and even though it is revealed to Ginger that Beetlejuice hates her dancing, I actually think that in this context, Beetlejuice’s lie was a surprisingly kind-hearted gesture. He could have been mean, and told her to her face that he thinks her dancing is terrible, but he didn’t, lying instead and ultimately sparing her feelings.

The second thing I really love about this episode is the fact that Lydia’s lie shows up in Beetlejuice’s closet. I love how this implies that Lydia spends so much time in the Neitherworld, and specifically with Beetlejuice/at the Roadhouse, that the rules of the universe decided that the most appropriate place for her lie skeleton to manifest was in the same closet as his. And apparently this connection is so strong, the fact that she told the lie in the living world didn’t stop the skeleton from setting up shop with his.

Look, I’m definitely not trying to harsh the Fizzmodeus ship buzz or anything buuuut…

I keep thinking about something Alex Brightman said in a Q&A a couple weeks ago, about how Fizzarolli has become the character he’s played that he relates to the most.

(Spoilers I guess?)

He more or less said that he relates to the fact that Fizzarolli always feels like he has to be “on;” he is The Clown, so he’s always performing. Alex related to that feeling of “I’m the funny man, this is my role, I must fulfill it, even when it’s to my personal detriment.” (Paraphrasing, of course. Who me? Wishing I had remembered to record the session?? 🙃)

So keeping that in mind when watching episode 7, it made me get the feeling that the relationship between Fizz and Asmodeus is more like a pet and his master rather than a partnership. Fizz is the cute little pet that does tricks for coins in the hat, so to speak, and it’s certainly suggested that Asmodeus dotes on him, but I wonder if it’s more like how a breeder dotes on their prized showdog. Though considering this is Hell, I somehow doubt that Fizz will get the grace of retiring from the dog show with the safety net of luxury.

If I’m correct, I’m definitely wondering how that’s going to parallel Blitz and Stolas’s relationship. Right now it’s kind of presented as a linear opposite; both are relationships between Princes of Hell and Imps, but while Stolas and Blitz are obviously discordant in their relationship, Asmodeus and Fizzarolli are presented as harmonious. But are they really? Are we going to get a reveal that Fizz is terrified of losing Ozzie’s good graces, and he’d be out the door of Ozzie’s club if he lost it, or worse? Or has Fizz convinced himself that Asmodeus actually loves him, and we’re going to see that illusion of how favored he is by Asmodeus crumble, while on the opposite end, Blitz and Stolas actually work toward a healthier relationship?

Or maybe I’m completely wrong! Maybe Fizz and Asmodeus are as in tune as they seem, and Alex was more alluding to Fizz’s public image; that Fizz’s feeling of constantly needing to perform stems from his degree of celebrity throughout Hell instead, while Ozzie is his one source of genuine security.

Either way, I am in looooooove with both Fizzarolli and Asmodeus, as individual characters, as plot devices, and as a ship, so Viv please hurry up and give us more of both 🙏
