REMEMBERING WHO I AM: A glimpse of tribal community.
Tumblr media
How many of us talk about our ancestors' ethnicity? There may be a few people who are still connected to their roots, but the majority of us in generation Z are influenced primarily by western culture and fashion. Though it’s not bad but somehow, we’re losing our own authenticity.
I am no exception; having been born and raised in a town, I shaped myself in accordance with the trends that emerged. When it comes to natives, I am a member of the "Santhal Tribe," an indigenous minority group. There are over 100 tribes in India, and each one has its own clothing, food, festival, language, and rituals. But, due to school and other obligations, we were unable to visit our hometown as frequently as we would have liked. And perhaps this is why I know so little about my own tribe.
It was my cousin's brother's wedding—the only boy in our entire family tree, with only one brother to seven sisters. I was overjoyed, but no Indian function is complete without a hiccup, and so my exams fell on the same day as my brother's wedding. I couldn't make it to the wedding, but I promised I wouldn't miss the authentic Santhali reception. Okay let’s not jump into the fact that I missed the ceremony. But visiting my hometown after almost a decade felt so relaxing.
Sagarbhanga is a small village located in the Jharkhand district of Sahebganj. Tribals can be found at every turn and are extremely friendly. I don't want to brag, but my family home is the largest in the entire district, and it is referred to as "Bada Ghar" by the locals. Because of the village people's regard for us, they came to assist with the preparations. Women were involved in making decorations out of the palm leaves. Oh, how beautiful their work was, and how natural everything was. Few men were painting on the walls, and they were tribal wall paintings with various creatures painted on them. It was absolutely lovely. The beauty of a tribe is that we live as one community and help each other unconditionally.
I should be familiar with the local tongue they use, santhali, but alas, I am not able to communicate in it. We even have our own traditional clothing, known as "Panchi Parhat" for women and lungi or dhoti for men. My sisters and I decided to dress in traditional attire for the ceremony. The dress was arranged, and a few locals assisted us in draping it. it was so pretty and easy to handle, light weight as it was made of cotton. My parents and other relatives were so happy to see us in our own traditional clothes.
In the ceremony all the village people gathered and presented gifts to the bride and the groom. My brother is so lucky he got a lot of gifts and blessings, I can’t wait to have a ceremony of my own.
It was time for food after the gift exchange. "The simpler, the better," is all I have to say. I'm sure the first thing that comes to mind when we hear the word "marriage" is the food. Being Indian, we always want pulav, Manchurian, or paneer butter masala; it's just ingrained in our minds that it should be on the menu. And I thought the same thing, but the taste of authentic simple food on a 'pattal' surprised me. Off-white perfectly cooked rice, dal, meat, and veggies, and that's it, all served on dried leaf plates. And, no offence, but all the dishes I've ever tasted in restaurants and hotels paled in comparison. I know you're thinking it'll create a lot of trash, but pattals are biodegradable, so we dumped it in a large hole that was later covered by soil. "Khaane ke baad kuch meetha ho jaye," we say now that we've eaten. You won't be sorry, believe me. Aside from the usual sweets, there was one item that piqued my interest. Those yellow bead-like things called "Bundiya" just melted as soon as I took a spoonful of them. Mesmerizing, a perfect way to round out the dish, but what I really missed was the authentic 'Dumbu' sweet from the tribe. It's made of rice flour, and the sweet dough is formed into many small balls before being steamed.
While I was eating the sweets, I overheard people discussing being a patient. Who got hurt, I wondered, until my mother explained that it was a ritual. A fun ritual in which the new bride pretends to be a doctor while the groom's sisters and relatives pretend to be injured by covering their legs and hands with mud and straws. And the bride is expected to treat them well (wash their hands and feet). But the best part is yet to come: the bride tightly grips the patient's feet and demands fees (gifts), refusing to leave until you give her gift. That sounded like fun, so I tried it as well.
It was great to see the entire family enjoying themselves after such a long time apart.
What about the dance, though? The ground was cleared, chairs were moved, and music was played immediately after each ritual. I was expecting the barati dance, but it's an authentic wedding. A few men who could play mandar gathered in the centre, and women formed a circle around them. It was a santhali folk dance, and it was a lot of fun. We danced until after midnight, which resulted in sore leg muscles next day.
Those were two lovely days spent in my hometown. I learned a lot about my own culture that I was unaware of because I had spent my entire life in a city. I enjoyed every minute I was there and hope to return soon. Yes, there is one thing I still regret: not learning my native language.
There is a misconception that tribal in Jharkhand live in jungles, wear leaves, and eat raw food. Well, the answer is already given; it is simply a misconception. We as a tribe prefer to live close to nature, not in jungles, but in homes that only a few people know about, which is unfortunate. Remember that there is a distinction between being indigenous and being uncivilized.
And I've learned that it's important to know and respect your roots no matter where you live.

Idk who to talk to about this but last year I came across a white couple that got married as Wangxian and am kind of dreading people getting married as bride!XL (I mean I don’t think I’m comfortable with it even when they’re cosplaying the character’s Period but I’m trying(maybe failing) to be generous) bc it’s specifically CHN marriage tradition. Knowing how people can love EAsian media yet be racist towards us anyway, the growing global sinophobia just makes this feel worse. Am I overreacting?
Hi anon!
I don’t necessarily think you’re overreacting because your personal sore points are informed by your specific life experiences and the kinds of racism and microaggressions you’ve encountered and grown weary and leery of. I know I have points where I react to/against, that doesn’t affect everyone, and may not even affect a majority. At the very least, there’s reasons why I shy away from engaging with fic and specific fandoms in certain spaces, that I know are valid for me, and may be discussed as far as how it parallels or plays into wider trends, but that that doesn’t necessarily mean it translates to blanket prohibitions or guidelines or such.
From what you’ve described to me, I think I’d be wary of it, but not altogether against it? I think if someone is doing a cosplay wedding.... that’s kind of whatever to me. When something becomes a media franchise like that, I kind of feel like that kind of thing is going to happen. It may not be perfectly equitable as far as like playing into issues of Orientalism and colonialism/postcolonialism/neocolonialism go, but also from a more personally pragmatic point, there’s only so many fucks I have to give, and there’s things that, if for no other reason than personal sanity, I have learned and am letting to let go. We can’t redo the history of the world so as to completely erase or eradicate Western colonization or the structures and patterns laid out in history for neocolonialism.
Another thing I have to grapple with, is that we/I shouldn’t turn our ire to the individual. On an individual level, the specific person isn’t enacting systemic inequality, even if their actions play into it. The best we can hope for, if we have the energy and means, is to reach out and try to connect with people and explain our perspective and our history, to see if we can connect with them in such a way that they understand what we’re saying and where we’re coming from. That’s not something that can be forced or brute-forced.
The bride!XL matter... yeah is more of a sticking point - although to me, bride!XL’s costume is still a costume, its patterns and motifs are slightly atypical for your traditional bridal attire. I do also want to kind of point out that the “traditional” Chinese wedding attire tends to be based off a Qing dynasty style and design, which has a further internal complexity of it being “Chinese,” but not being traditional Han ethnic clothing and rather based more on Manchu traditions. Similar to the topics ppl grapple with regarding the qipao/cheongsam, and part of the reason for the hanfu revival movement.
For me personally, I find it... unideal for people to be dressing up in a “costume” for marriage, especially when it DOES tie into the culture, but at the same time I feel like if people are going out of their way to dress as bride!XL (and not just “oh I found this “bridal costume” and thought it would be cute”), then that means Xie Lian and TianGuan means something to them. Watching wedding dress shows, the whole Western tradition of white or close-to-white gowns IS very strong, if not with the bridal party then with the families, so poteeentially for them to break from that, hopefully to me means that it DOES mean something to them, even if it may not be what I or we want it to. I think for me, if people were co-opting marriage traditions or customs in an uniformed matter, I’d be more tilted about it lmao, but that’s me and my comfort level.
I feel you tho on racism and sinophobia and people who will consume EAsian media but still be racist towards people. I think that’s a valid point of contention. I think you see it played out in the greater fandom :/ Not, tho, always in every case that’s popped up as a “racism” issue. But I do think it’s there, and I think some of the recent discourse on racism in fandom - which was prevalent what feels like a year ago but was actually a couple months - also has roots in real issues and trends.
Hrmm tl;dr tho? I think you’re valid and not necessarily overreacting, because there IS a lot of history and honestly, contemporary actions and trends, which make that uncomfortable and possibly even damaging. But at the same time.... I think generally on a fandom level, these individual situations are somewhat inevitable especially for larger-reaching fandoms (as far as like the fandom bell curve goes), and aren’t necessarily single-handedly enacting and enforcing all of those bevvy of -isms. And even then, as an individual, we can’t stop other people from making the decisions they make and doing the things they do with their own lives. The topic is complicated bc we have the the confluence of fandom competing needs and racial/social justice competing needs which is, you know, complicated by additional swathes of intersectional identities and issues.
I’m sorry I don’t really have an easy answer for you or any kind of reassurance or anything. But I don’t necessarily think you’re discomfort is invalid, but at the same time I think it’s a good opportunity to try to reflect on it, interrogate what might be some more extreme impulses you might have as far as reacting or responding, and practice self-care where you can as far as curating your experience to be as harm-free for yourself as you can and focus as much as you can on the aspects you can control instead of remaining in the agonizing of the factors that are outside of your control. Because as much as it might gall me, there ARE factors I cannot personally control or influence, and that can even include people who are, on paper, in my immediate sphere of influence. If they don’t want to listen to me or find other competing needs more compelling, I can try to reach out and explain where I’m coming from all I want, but I can’t force anyone to reciprocate or honestly, even listen. So instead of focusing my energy onto the minds I can’t change, I think in the long run it’s more productive and more enjoyable to focus on the things I CAN affect. And on some things, I find I’ve had a better/more enjoyable time blacklisting instead of focusing overly on the factors outside of my control and trying to force things outside of my control to somehow happen anyway.
Now of course, it’s easy for me to SAY that now lmao. I mean, I know I’m not without flaws or salt. My saltmines run deep and my wounds remain rather sensitive and not yet numbed by time and my salt does indeed runneth over, maybe more often than ppl who aren’t me and who are following my blog for specific things would rather. And I don’t have it in me to always be magnanimous or extend people good faith without a second thought, especially if it’s something that hits a trigger. But idk, psychologically speaking, and even just from a personal level, it’s not helpful to me or even potentially to others to be so focused on things I can’t control or influence and to like be stuck in suffering so much. We only have so many hours and so many brain cells to devote to things.
...I literally have no clue how to wrap this up oh god. uhhh real tl;dr ig: anon I think you’re valid, but also like... from my personal experience... I’m suffering either way so for me I’m like. might as well learn to let it go so I’m not actively suffering over this particular thing and either free up braincells to try to building towards thriving or so I can suffer about things that are due to “me” reasons, or short of that, I do not see.meme it so at least I’m not being actively triggered by it (I think this is more where I’m at right now,,,, lmao,,, F). Ur valid tho, I know the struggle of “am I the one being issues” but that ALSO becomes stifling (or it did for me), when I felt like I had to shut up and behave so as to not ruffle Westerner feelings. But also suffering is rough and I encourage you, for your own peace of mind, to explore ways to lessen your suffering, bc that shit is rough.

18%  Have different religious beliefs

Whether it's getting engaged around the holidays when family is coming together (19% of proposals happen in December) or inviting loved ones to witness the actual proposal or party with you after, today's millennial couples are opting to make their engagement a highly shared experience. And even if the moment is a private one (nearly 1 in 3 engagements take place at home) the reality is a picture, story, view of the ring – or all the above – will be shared on social media for all to see within a few hours.
TOP ENGAGEMENT DATES
Christmas Day continues to be the most popular day to get engaged, with 7 out of the top 10 most popular days to get engaged taking place in December.
Did you know? The majority of couples are engaged for over a year, with the average engagement length lasting 14 months.
75% get down on one knee when proposing
64% share their engagement on social media within a few hours before sharing with family.
Couples' love affair with fall continues, as nearly 40% of all weddings take place during these three months, September and May. October (the 19th day was the day for most) In looking at couples who got engaged in 2018, September and set a date to get married in 2019, October is looking to be another popular month to tie the knot.
On average, couples spend nearly 2 hours a week planning their wedding and spend 80% of their time planning online. When looking at online planning behaviors based on time of day, mobile usage peaks from 9PM – midnight after couples are home from work and often multi-tasking, though Sunday is also a popular planning day on mobile.
TODAY'S COUPLES BY THE NUMBERS
Although every couple has its own identity, we see that race, sexual orientation and/or cultural roots can create similarities among newlyweds of similar backgrounds. For instance, Asian brides are less likely to wear white than the national average, and while the size of LGBTQ weddings continues to increase (now 110), the number of wedding party members remains a bit smaller than the average wedding.

WoW..... There are many reasons why couples decide to elope. One of the more common is because their parents or families don't approve of the union. Summer Wedding Styles to Embrace This Season
Weddings in India during the transitional period between spring and summer can be just as enjoyable as those held during the winter season, popularly known as "Wedding Season," and weddings in India can be as spectacular as a wedding can be. Weddings in India during the transitional period between spring and summer can be just as delightful as those held during the winter season, dubbed "Wedding Season," and weddings in India can be as beautiful as a wedding can be. Your wedding trousseau styles, on the other hand, must reflect this. Weddings have a sequence of events, each with its own dress code and theme. Summer wedding attire should be both comfortable and appealing.
Because Indian culture is best portrayed during an Indian wedding, guests are highly attentive when selecting their entire wedding clothing.  Weddings are incomplete without lehenga. Chhaya Mehrotra's mesmerising lehengas is both elegant and attractive, making it ideal for weddings. Every bridesmaid wishes to look lovely in a luxurious lehenga on her best friend's or sister's wedding day. The lehengas line reflects her love of working with handloom textiles from her hometown of Banaras. Her lehengas line combines embroidery and rhinestones with traditional elements, resulting in a body of work with a distinct appeal that can be worn on any occasion. Chhaya Mehrotra couture has numerous flowing and delicate attire that you can wear to a wedding.
So, we suggest some ideal pieces from our diverse and discerning curations for you to pick for this special time:
Roka -Roka is the first pre-wedding ceremony in which the bride and groom are asked to consent to the wedding and all the elders bless them. A lehenga is always a good choice for an Indian wedding, whether it's in the summer or the winter. For this ceremony, simple and stark off-white or white alternatives with heavy dupattas in bright colours and gorgeous jewellery are excellent. This Chhaya Mehrotra CRUSHED LEHANGA SET is made of Habutai pure Silk and has a soft Silk Organza Dupatta embellished with and paired with designer smock tube Top.
Tumblr media
You could also opt for this gorgeous red and white Soft Silk Organza Saree with RhinestonesBlouse and scalloped details.
Tumblr media
Pre-Wedding Puja- If you're attending a pre-wedding puja where the dress code is rather effortless, I recommend wearing a Kurtis & kurta set. You might wear an Aline / straight kurta with pants and carry a heavy dupatta to complete the outfit. Accessorize with pearls, floral gajras, and a lovely matching Potli.
You can go for a striking look, such as this exquisite GREY KURTA SET by chhayamehrotra, which has a modern aspect due to its shape, colour, and statement dupatta, as well as a classic Indian look due to the silk thread embroidery work.
Tumblr media
Or you can go with this eye-catching piece Long flared Pink Ombre Kurti, which looks lovely while also complementing your body's shape wonderfully. You can may wear this kurti in variety of occasions, it making them a fantastic piece to have in your wardrobe.
Tumblr media
Haldi- For both the bride and groom, Haldi day is the most colourful and joyful day. When it comes to Haldi Ceremony outfits for the bride, bridesmaids, and family members, there are many options available, ranging from a lehenga to a vibrant saree or a kurta or any other ethnic clothing, but "Yellow" is definitely the colour of the Ceremony! While the above recommendation is more traditional, here's a more modern version of the lehenga for people who prefer to experiment with fresh and different looks. So, you could opt for this YELLOW LEHENGA SET by Chhaya Mehrotra with scattered light embroidery all over the lehenga and a block printed top with exquisite embroidered Silk Organza Dupatta.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mehndi - Mehndi is a night when everyone has fun with each other and there is good music to accompany them all. For the start of one of the most colourful ceremonies, your fashion choices should reflect the upbeat atmosphere. For a refreshing contrast, opt for brighter and richer colour palettes that mix between jewel tones and pastel tints. Choose this unconventional Chhaya Mehrotra lehengas if you want your attire to stand out from the crowd. This stunning RADHA KRISHNA LEHENGA SET exudes the ultimate mehndi vibes.
Tumblr media
You could also choose this Light Aqua Ombre Lehenga set, which has a very feminine and alluring aesthetic because of the unique embroidered butte, its colour combination and colourful Tassels which is everything you want in an Indian wedding.
Tumblr media
Cocktail &Sangeet- For this occasion, you should dress in a classic and traditional style, with crystal colours that brighten up the evening and further in night time events, darker hues do wonders. Look for fabrics and designs that will allow you to effortlessly break moves on the dance floor.
For a trendy style, choose plain ruffle sarees with paired with a Rhinestone studded Blouseto tightened it up and give your body an enticing shapewith the help a designer matching belt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Secondly, a SILK SATIN SAREE, such as this Chhaya Mehrotra Sarees, which is embellished with contrast Rhinestone work that will make head turn while you dance as its catches and reflects light.
Tumblr media
Marriage- Marriage is a sacred relationship, and each ceremony at a wedding is unique.
Go as glamorous as you wish for the main ceremony.
This stunning Chhayamehrotra lehengas are ideal for summer weddings its studded blouse, Crushed lehenga and rhinestone-encrusted silk organza dupatta will give you a really luxurious appearance.

Modern AU - Excerpt - Visit to Istanbul, not Constantinople (Don’t kill me for that please.)
THIS IS A PART OF MY NANOWRIMO PROJECT FOR NOVEMBER. I needed to get back into the swing of writing and this will be added in at some point!
Please note:  I put a lot of research and checked like a million times with my aunt who’s from Turkey (she’s a very dear friend of my mothers who I consider an aunt) about how well written this is to Turkish life, and I fact checked that as well. This is as close as possible as I could get to the real thing!
Word Count: 3,208 words
Waking up to a view of the Golden Horn was quite an experience to Sinbad.
After a twelve hour flight from Portland to London, and then another three and a half hour flight from London to Istanbul, he was blissful when he and Ja’far arrived to the hotel they were staying at while visiting the fabled city.
He had taken a shower and promptly fell asleep on the large, luxurious bed, completely out even before his head hit the pillow.
Ja’far had forgotten to close the curtains over the large, crystal pained windows the night before. When the sun had started coming over the horizon, it had woken Sin up. Amber irises lazily opened, and the first thing that caught his eye was the sun lighting the Golden Horn up, mists gauzy over the blue-gold waters.
Now Sinbad understood why generations of Turks,Greeks and other peoples wanted this city of hills and seas. A view like this, along with the city itself, was completely enchanting.
His thoughts were cut out by the sound of the muezzins call to prayer from the Blue Mosque, and he felt Ja’far shift next to him in their bed.
“Mmm,is it dawn already…?” he sat up,stretching. In the light of the morning, his green eyes were hazy with tiredness. Sin couldn’t help it. Tousled with sleep, lips formed in a pout, he thought that Ja’far was the cutest thing he had ever seen.
“Unfortunately. Did you wake up because of the call to prayer?” Sinbad reached out and wrapped his arms around his husband, pulling his slim body close. Sin kissed Ja’far’s forehead, and the smaller man made a contented and warm sound.
“Mhm. I always do when I come to visit my grandmother. It’s a soothing sound.” Ja’far’s father was Turkish and raised in Istanbul. His mother, and Ja’far’s grandmother, was Nilüfer. His only surviving grandparent on his (long deceased) father’s side, Ja’far had been close to her even after he was adopted by Rurumu and Hinahoho after his biological parents had died. (He had been adopted by them since they and his biological parents were such good friends.)
“But I hope Allah doesn’t mind me not bowing in prayer today, I am too tired and jet lagged.” Ja’far curled up in Sinbad’s embrace, enjoying the feeling of sleeping past dawn for once on a Monday. Sinbad ran a trading partnership with a friend of theirs, Rashid, and consequently they were both awake before the sun was up most days.
This year, on the second to last day of Ramadan – their holy month – Sinbad and Ja’far had left for a vacation for their third wedding anniversary, which fell on the last day of Eid al-Fitr, the celebration of the end of fasting. (Better known as Kurban Bayramı in Turkey.)
And it would be nice to spend it with Ja’far’s extended family in Istanbul.
“I’m glad fasting is almost over. It was chaos being at work at lunch time when we couldn’t eat. It was nice Rashid could join in on us working though – we got more work done in this last month than I thought possible.” Rashid, like his two friends, was also Muslim, though a little more lax than most. His son Alibaba was taught to choose his own religion, since he didn’t want to force anything on him.
Sinbad grinned. “Taking a vacation and you talk about work, how romantic.”
Ja’far rolled his eyes. “I know, I know, Ramadan isn’t over yet. Maybe we can spend the day sleeping until sunset -” Sinbad was cut off by the ringing of Ja’far’s cellphone.
“Grandmother?” Ja’far switched to Turkish, the sound lovely to Sinbad’s ears. He enjoyed hearing his husband talk in the language Ja’far loved so much. “Ah, yes we’re in Istanbul. We’re at the hotel right now and thinking of sleeping the day away until before the celebration starts at sunset. And yes, we brought Aladdin.”
Aladdin was their adopted son, and sleeping in the room next to theirs. At seventeen years old, they felt him too old to sleep in the same room as them while they were visiting in Turkey. He was adopted shortly after they were married when they were twenty one and Aladdin fourteen.
“We will be at the house around… seven or so? We’ll get ready around six and drive over.” Ja’far smiled at the excited tone his grandmother used. At seventy four she was extremely youthful, and he adored her.
“Yes yes, I love you too. Can’t wait to see you.” he hung up. Ja’far was just putting the phone back on the nightstand when Aladdin peeked in. The sleepy teenager was almost as tall as Sinbad, and taller than Ja’far was now (a sore point since he had known Aladdin since he was very very small).
“Breakfast?” Aladdin was raised in the Jewish faith by his biological parents before them and, as a rule, Sinbad and Ja’far didn’t force him to adhere to their religious month of fasting.
“There’s a restaurant down in the lobby that opens in half an hour – hold on.” Ja’far reached over and rummaged around in the jeans he wore the night before. He took out forty Turkish lira.
“It’s relatively inexpensive, so that should be enough for breakfast and lunch – and remember, your grandmother will have a huge spread for the celebrations later so don’t eat too much at lunch.” He reached over and gave his son an affectionate kiss on the cheek.
“We will be sleeping until four or so and leaving at five. So don’t bother us until around then.” Ja’far smiled at him. “Do some of the summer work your teacher assigned you, yes? I know you have your laptop with you. Try and do as much as you can, since we plan on going to the Asian side of Istanbul tomorrow to visit other family, and we still have a few weeks ahead of us for exploring around here.”
Aladdin nodded and smiled. “Sleep well~”
Ja’far fell back onto the bed after the door shut. He was thankful Sinbad had drawn the heavy curtains shut, darkening the once sun-bright room, and promptly joined him back in bed.
After that, they slept the hours between the first dawn to four PM in relative comfort, only awakened by the sound of a beeping alarm. Refreshed, Ja’far rose from the bed to shower himself before Sinbad was able to snatch the bathroom for himself. He heard his husband grumbling about it on the others ide of the door and Ja’far resisted the urge to giggle.
“I’m faster than you.” Ja’far said, coming from the bathroom just ten minutes after entering the shower. “Besides, why do you need one? You took one last night -”
“I just want to look nice, that a crime?” he laughed, and stole the shower back for himself. Ja’far turned the TV on to the news, and got dressed. He thanked goodness that his hair was short and just needed minor brushing, and he was good to go. Wearing a loose fitting traditional Turkish shirt of soft green linen, embroidered in gold thread; and a yelek, a vest made of bright yellow and embroidered with silver. These were only for the special occasion, since he generally dressed in a more relaxed fashion away from work.
“You look amazing, as usual.” Sinbad popped his head out and grinned. His long dark purple hair was saturated with water, and the distinct smell of his sandalwood soap smacked Ja’far in the face when he opened the door.
“Flatterer! You have ten minutes to get ready.” he laughed when Sin stuck his tongue out at him, and popped back in the bathroom, presumably to start the process of getting dressed. Ja’far decided to go over and check on Aladdin and see if he was dressed and ready to go.
Aladdin didn’t disappoint. Even if he was dressed as a normal teenager – a graphic tshirt, jeans and boots – Ja’far knew that would be alright. His grandmother would still hug him close and smother him with kisses, formal attire or not.
“Pops ready to go?” Aladdin called Ja’far dad and Sinbad pops – for some reason it irritated Sin to no end, and made him feel old even though he was only twenty four years old.
“Ready as he will ever be. That man lives to rush places, I swear to – you know what I mean.” Aladdin laughed at Ja’far’s exasperated response. He knew they loved each other even if they did argue quite a bit.
“Grandma is excited to see us all, I can feel it.” Aladdin said on the way to their (rented) car. Sinbad had finally been ready to go at exactly two fifty (much to Ja’far’s annoyance) and they were in the car by six PM.
Traversing the streets of Istanbul was interesting, with twists and turns, on their way to the quarter of the city the family home was in.
Nilüfer Aga lived in a house that had belonged to her husband’s family for generations; Ja’far was named for his grandfather, who was Egyptian and Turkish in ethnicity.
The name Aga came from the word for ‘leader’ in Ottoman Turkish, since his family going back generations were apart of the old Ottoman Empire’s government and one of his ancestors was married to a sister of Sultan Suleiman the Lawgiver (called the Magnificent in the west) himself.
Ja’far rarely talked about this, considering it was something in the past. Though part of him, frankly, was somewhat proud to know that on his father’s side he was related to a just and good ruler. He held an affection for the city of his father’s birth, since he had come there every other summer (the other summers spent with his mother’s parents in their home in Dublin,Ireland.) and as a result knew the city by heart.
“Sin, you’re going the wrong way-”
“It’s the long way, and much prettier. Besides we have time before the sun goes down anyways.” he flashed a charming smile at his husband, who rolled his eyes.
“The sun sets earlier here than back home, doesn’t it?” Aladdin said in the backseat. Growing up in the pacific northwest, he was used to the sun setting anywhere from nine thirty to ten PM. Long summer twilights meant lots of playing for him, even at this age.
“Well we’re farther north than here.” Ja’far smiled. “But it’s just as bright with all the lights here in the city. I forget this is your first trip here.”
“Remember when Grandma came all the way from Turkey for your wedding and walked away with a great grandson too?” Aladdin grinned. Even though the events surrounding his adoption was painful, he was happy it was Sheba’s dear friend that gained custody of him. He had already taken to calling Ja’far his second mother (as a joke of course) from a super young age, spending days sitting at his table from elementary school.
Aladdin had come into their home a year before Sinbad and Ja’far had married, originally Ja’far as Aladdin’s legal guardian after his parent’s disappearance. (No one had known what happened, since their car was found outside of town, no valuables taken, even Solomon and Sheba’s phones still in the console of the car.)
Ja’far and Sinbad had been married the year after they disappeared, saddened by the absence of their friends, but still glad in the fact that Aladdin had been kept in their circle. Four years after their disappearance he still missed his parents, but he was happy he had his adoptive parents.
“I told you this was too long-”
“Nothing is happening yet, Ja’far, calm yourself. You’re worse than flighty hen.” “‘Flighty hen’? Who are you calling a ‘flighty hen’?” Ja’far was tempted to give his husband what for but realized he was driving out of the city and to quarter his grandmother lived in, named Yeniköy. It was located on the very sea line of the Bosphorus strait. The only reason they weren’t staying there instead of a hotel was the fact that Ja’far liked his privacy, and did not relish his nosy family learning all of his and Sinbad’s habits.
(Also its extremely distressing when your husband gets handsy in the house one considered their childhood home. No thank you, he liked to think his grandfather still resided in the home spiritually and that wouldn’t be fun for him to see, would it?)
Unlike most of the homes in the quarter, it was spaced evenly away from its neighbors. Lawns of emerald green surrounded the home, up until it came to the marble quay that had only the one caïque his grandmother preferred to use over a car.
The sun was just starting to set over the city when they pulled in through the gates of Nilüfer’s home. Already there were the cars of the various aunts, uncles and cousins on both her side and her husbands side; she was considered the Matriarch of their family, and thusly many people gathered in her home for holidays, birthdays and even weddings.
“Ready?” Ja’far asked Aladdin as the teen got out of the car. His eyes darted around, nervous about the amount of cars and the probable amount of people that were gathered there.
“Little bit. Everyone here I don’t think I’ve met...” he trailed off.
“Well you know Grandmother, Aunt Nermin, Uncle Ibrahim and their children -”
“That’s about it.” Aladdin was still following behind his parents, however, even if he was nervous. The double doors, made of a sweet smelling cedar wood, opened with a heavy creaking sound.
“Hadji! You’re still here!” Ja’far couldn’t help but smile at the small, wizened man smiling at him at the door. From some of his earliest memories of his grandmothers house, this man has long been her companion and her butler. He remembered a rumor saying after his grandfather died before he was even born, he had been her lover. He dismissed the accusation, since Hadji had nothing but respect for his best friend.
“As long as Lady Nilüfer is here, I shall ever be here, young master.” with his formal speech came a twinkle in his eye. Ja’far adored him, and he was like a grandfather to him and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren that peopled the family.
“Ah! I’m rude. Hadji, this is Aladdin. You’ve already met Sinbad.” Ja’far was more than grateful that his family accepted him – he knew that Nilüfer would no matter what, since he was her favorite grandchild – but it was Hadji’s acceptance of his husband that made it all the better.
“Still looks like a rascal, even in those nice clothes.” he smiled, ushering them in. The smell of cooking food hit the pair hard, since the hadn’t eaten since coming into Istanbul the night before.
“I smell so much good food – If I don’t eat soon, I’ll perish.” Sinbad muttered.
“Today is the last day, so you’ll be fine. Besides, we got a lot of work done this month!” Ja’far said brightly. Sinbad sent him a dirty look.
“Stop bringing work up on vacation -”
“Can’t stop, won’t stop~” Ja’far grinned mischievously at his husband. It was the last day of fasting, and it was time to celebrate. True, the true partying would happen tomorrow, but his family always started the night before since they could sleep the day away next morning.
He could hear the sounds of laughing people from the largest chamber in the house, and he followed the noises, familiar sounds of old and new Turkish mixed together, songs being sung, and even a joke or two.
“Ah! You’re here!” he felt his grandmother’s arms wrap instantly around him, and he held the small, delicate looking woman close. Nilüfer didn’t look a day over sixty, despite her years. Her hair was the same shade of blond as her grandson’s, albeit with more silvery strands. However, where his eyes were a leafy, emerald green, hers blazed a green-gold color that was lively as a young woman’s. There were faint lines here and there, but all around she was still just as beautiful as any woman in the world.
“Grandmother.” Ja’far felt himself tear up, realizing just then how much he actually missed this elegant, imperious woman. She was the person he adored above all people in his family.
“My lion, how I missed you so.” she patted his cheek. “You’ve grown even more handsome since the last time I saw you. I don’t miss that elated, happy look in your eyes, Ja’far. I’m glad for it.” There was a small silence between them, him just hugging her close, like any grandchild would do after not seeing their grandparent after years of separation. She set him back, looking him up and down.
“You look more like your mother with every passing year. The only thing of my family in you is the coloring of your hair, but its not bad. She was a beautiful woman and I miss her as much as I miss your father.” she sighed. He patted her shoulder.
“We brought Aladdin with us. We know how much you adore him.” Ja’far pulled him close to his grandmother, and smiled when he got the hugging and kissing treatment, much to the teens embarassment.
“Ja’far!” came the call from his favorite aunt, Nermin. One of the first people to accept his marriage to Sinbad, she was a bright ray of sunshine, and eased his way into coming out to his extended family. While some grumbled, the overwhelming vote was happy for him and for Sinbad.
“Hello Au-” he was cut off by being smothered with kisses, and he felt more like a small boy than an adult man.
“Aunt!” he sounded so embarrassed when he finally escaped her embrace, realizing he was smiling about the same thing happening to Aladdin. He laughed.
“Still beautiful as ever! Do you ever age?”
“Ask yourself that, you still look like a teenager!” Nermin grinned. “We all seem to age slowly, don’t we? One asks if we have found the fountain of youth! Keh keh!” It was a running family joke that all of the Aga family line had been given a sip from the fabled fountain of youth at birth, thus securing a slow aging process.
“Oh yes, I do don’t I?” he smiled.
Sinbad had sat back and watched for a little while, letting Ja’far interact with any and all family members, and couldn’t help but smile. He was happy, even energetic, despite his lack of food and still suffering from jet lag.
Ja’far wouldn’t own up to it, but he thrived when surrounded by family. He would always brighten when there were gatherings, even if they were at their friends houses. Then again, friends were family, weren’t they?
The sun and finally sunk below the horizon line before anyone knew it; and everyone spilled out into the warm, Anatolian night for dinner.
Everything from roasted lamb to rice and vegetables drenched in olive oil covered the tables; Turkish tea and coffee scented the air. Laughter was swept up into the night as the rest of Istanbul celebrated the night that preceded the end of the fast.

New Post has been published on https://www.outfittrends.com/kurta-pajama-styles-indian-male-celebrities/
11 Best Kurta Pajama Styles From Indian Male Celebrities
Indian Celebrities Kurta Pajama Styles: Kurta Pajama fashion was deeply enrooted in the subcontinent before partition, and then as Pakistan and India separated, the lovers of kurta pajama parted their ways as well but the love for this style never died. It still lives across India and its people. Men across Asia have adored wearing kurta pajama from the beginning of time, be it men in Pakistan, India, Srilanka or Bangladesh.
The history of kurta pajama style can be traced back to Central Asia, but with passing time Kurta pajama became an identity of Indian and Pakistani men. With the growing influence of modern fashion, cuts, and stitches, kurta pajama has evolved in its sense but the roots of a straight pajama and a straight kurta hasn’t been changed. Styles have evolved from tight straight pajamas to slightly loose ones for better movement and for more comfort, but the essence of the attire has not been changed over the years.
No matter how much westernized Asia becomes, it will never lose its true love for kurta pajamas.
Latest Kurta Pajama Trends From Bollywood
Indian male celebrities have worn and showcased kurta pajamas nationally and internationally as their own, which it definitely is. The style of kurta pajama originating from central Asia got into its true essence in India. Different people from different regions of India took up kurta pajamas in their own way. From Lucknowi kurta pajama, to Pathani, to the ever so famous and loved Agra’s kurta pajama, Bhopali, and Hyderabadi kurta pajama style. Men have worn and adored wearing and carrying kurta pajamas since forever.
Be it the basic and ever classic plain white mid-length or long kurta pajama or a colorful one, any Indian men or Indian male celebrity can pull it off easily. Indian men have worn kurta pajamas from their childhood and seen celebrities and other men wearing it as well, trust me, no one can ever go wrong with a kurta pajama. Let’s start with some tips on wearing kurta pajamas:
Wear it as you own it. It has been the attire of your great grandfathers.
You can add so much to a kurta and make it look modern, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different accessories and styles.
Add a turban and a proper sangeet or mehndi attire is ready.
Add a jacket for winters and you got that modern royal look going on.
For men with a heavier body, choose a kurta of your fitting and you can definitely pull it off.
Be it straight pajamas or chooridars, a straight kurta will rock with both.
Do invest in a couple of good quality white pajamas as you can pair them with literally any kurta.
While white pajamas look best with light colored kurtas, you also need to invest in some excellent quality black pajamas that you can pair with any dark colored kurta.
If you’re wearing a jacket over your kurta pajama, try matching the color of your shoes with it for a well-balanced look.
You can always jazz up a simple kurta pajama by accessorizing it the right way.
Now let’s share some dapper kurta-pajama styles for you by the ever so loved and famous Indian male celebrities, without further ado, let’s get into it.
↓ 11 – Bachchan Style
Who can age more gracefully than Mr. Bachchan! The way he paired his statement kurta with a white pajama and golden velvet moccasins that had golden tassels. The shoes definitely elevated the otherwise subtle attire, adding the young and energetic vibes that he is known for.
Here’s another look from the Big B, as once again he’s seen upgrading a simple look with the right choice of accessories. This time, his silver bird stole is stealing all the limelight at the Ambani wedding 2019.The basic black kurta is everyone’s favorite so do check out these 26 Best Black Kurta Pajama for Men 2019.
↓ 10 – Varun Dhavan’s Yellow Silk Kurta
Who says desi men can not pull bright colored kurtas? Varun Dhawan here has been seen defying all conventional stigmas with brown-skinned men and bright colored kurtas. And oh man does he look absolute dapper, heck yes! Varun Dhawan was seen wearing a button down, short-length, silk kurta at a promotional drive for his upcoming movie, and a bright yellow jacket over it, and he pulled it off with absolute perfection and ease. As summer weddings are around the corner as well, nothing better than a silk straight kurta topped with a desi yet chic jacket, and voila, you are summer wedding ready boys. Furthermore, Varun is seen wearing this chic kurta outfit with jogger pants, a summer staple. I love this look, don’t know about you.
↓ 09 – Kartik Aryan’s Kurta Pajama With Jacket
Hats off to Kartik Aryan for pulling off the most stylish kurta pajama look that we have ever seen. The distinctive cut and design of this kurta is such a showstopper that if you wear it on any occasion, you’ll surely be the talk of the event. The black velvet jacket has Pegasus detailing on it, which makes it a must-have for anyone who likes to own statement pieces. Since the kurta and jacket are very eye-catching, the look has been balanced by using simple white pajama as anything else would have made the outfit go over the top. Last but not least, the black suede loafers perfectly complement the whole outfit and especially the jacket. This is definitely one of the best looks that we have seen in a while.
↓ 08 – Ranbir Kapoor’s Black & White Kurta Pajama
White has been really trending this year and in this outfit of Ranbir Kapoor, there’s just so much going on that we love. The asymmetrical jacket paired over the self-print white kurta is giving us some major fashion goals. This is, however, a very bold look and it might not be something that everyone can carry. If you’re looking for some inspiration for a wedding outfit, here are the best Men’s Kurta Pajama Styles for Weddings.
↓ 07 – Shahid Kapoor’s Simple But Savage Attire
Like already said, nothing can possibly go wrong with a plain white or black kurta-pajama. The dapper Shahid Kapoor has proved it, boys. Generally, a black plain kurta-pajama is something almost every male would have in their wardrobe, especially black lovers. It’s proper ethnic attire for any festival, be it Diwali, Holi or a wedding event. Straight pajamas and straight kurta is the basic kurta pajama style around which all the modern kurta pajama styles revolve. Plain kurta pajama is as versatile as it can get, a printed and colored waistcoat threw over or a blazer or a coat, add a turban or wear it as it is, this outfit speaks volumes for itself. Celebrities are seen wearing and adoring this ethnic attire on their trips and events abroad, which without adding anything is as fashionable yet traditional as it can get. There can’t be said enough or less about this attire, I’m sure almost every Indian men know the importance of a plain black kurta-pajama in their wardrobe.
↓ 06 – Asymmetrical Kurta
What Indian male celebrities have been seen wearing in recent times is the sidecut kurta and straight pajamas. Have to say, a marvelous modern touch to the conventional kurta pajama style. While it keeps the real essence of the straight kurta and straight pajama alive, it also gives it a whole new look. Looks more like a royal dress than a kurta pajama because of the side frill and the cut. These sidecut kurtas are seen usually worn in plain styles by the celebrities with often a jacket was thrown over it to make it look fully modern and changed. However, it is the same straight kurta and pajama which you all men wear all the time. Angad Bedi here is seen flaunting effortlessly in the sidecut kurta and straight pajama with the love of his life, Neha Dhupia.
↓ 05 – Kurta Pajama With Waistcoat
The basic and ever loved and now ages old, but still the same old fashioned and loved kurta pajama with a waistcoat. For me, nothing has ever, or nothing can ever beat the conventional kurta pajama with a waistcoat. In initial times, the waistcoat used to be loose and straight compared to these days, when waistcoats are tighter and fitted. A perfect fit for any given wedding event, festive party, get together or a desi party. For the real essence of tradition, celebrities have been seen wearing the same straight kurta pajama and waistcoat style. Saif Ali Khan, the Nawab himself, pulled off the kurta pajama and waistcoat in his style. And boy oh boy, did he drop some jaws on the way, definitely! Take the nawab inspiration from the ever so dashing Saif Ali Khan, and believe that you can pull off a white kurta pajama and a waistcoat as well. And talking about nawabi looks, here are the Latest Designs Of Jodhpuri Suits For Men.
↓ 04 – Round Edges Mid-length Kurta Pajama
In September last year, Shahid Kapoor was seen wearing mid-length kurta pajama with an apple cut and I am totally digging this style now. A comfortable, easy to move in, fashionable yet chic kurta pajama style which can be worn to any occasion, a summer get together, wedding event, on a winter Diwali or Holi party with a jacket thrown over, this outfit is the basic yet adds the pathani touch to it with its mid-length, apple cut kurta and straight or churidar pajama. Shahid Kapoor definitely looked dapper in this attire and has been giving us major desi goals in kurta pajama outfits since forever. An apple cut mid-length kurta pajama is now a must-have in your wardrobe boys.
↓ 03 – All White Straight Lucknowi Kurta
Lucknowi kurta, my favourite! Nothing like the light, chicken, self embroidered kurta and straight pajamas. Brings back the Manto vibes from the older days of India, Agra, and Lucknow specifically. The ever so loved and basic Lucknowi straight kurta pajama is all that you need for a summer wedding or a get-together. This attire speaks volumes for itself, traditionally and fashionably. A turban and sunglasses to top it off, you are ready. None other than Ranveer Singh with clean shave can pull it off better. The mini-series of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s airport desi outfits post-wedding was all we were living for. They gave us major outfit goals back in the day. Every Indian male must have this Lucknowi straight kurta pajama in their wardrobe to flaunt through a summer get-together or sangeet or mehndi function. For the festivity of Holi, these Lucknowi kurtas are most loved, they are an amazing fit with their straight cut as well as light to wear and easy to move in. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone seen hand in hand here giving us couple goals in matching desi attire.
↓ 02 – Ranveer Singh’s Long Kurta Pajama
There isn’t any outfit that Ranveer Singh cannot easily pull off. From kurta pajama to shalwar kameez to furry jackets at iiFa to floral coats and striped ones too, he is a total fashion diva. Which is why whatever the fashion icon wears becomes the new cool. In the mini-series of Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s airport desi outfits post their wedding, he was seen colour coordinating with the love of her life, yet again (heart eyes only) in a light pink straight kurta-pajama with a little white embroidery around the neck. And he totally rocked that sophisticated yet colorful summer outfit hands down. Any Indian male can pull a tea pink kurta pajama outfit with ease now that Ranveer Singh has set the bars for it. So, don’t shy away from light or bright colored kurta boys, it’s the new thing now apparently.
↓ 01 – Short-Length Kurta Pajama
Aditya Roy Kapoor, the heartthrob with a million dollar smile was seen wearing a short-length button down kurta with a straight pajama and he looked super cool. The short-length kurta pajama, sometimes with a waistcoat, has always been the Bollywood male celebrity thing. Be it Saf Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan, Akshay Kumar, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor,  or any other male celebrity, they have been seen flaunting a short-length kurta and straight pajama everywhere, movie promotions, wedding events or any other festival. And they sure know how to carry it. Kurta pajama is as versatile and traditional as it gets, either you wear it with layers or as it is, it gives out the true essence of ethnic Indian wear. With no or little effort you have a perfect desi dress for the go.

TIP! Try to make your wedding day more personal by using elements that symbolize you and your future spouse’s relationship and personalities. Select a theme that corresponds to you as a couple, and evokes things you have done together.
Now is the time for your wedding planning adventure. It’s the day of your dreams and you want everything to be absolutely perfect. You can find all kinds of perfect wedding ideas, but they come at a price. How can you ever match the wedding costs to your budget? This article will give you ideas on planning a wedding without breaking the bank.
TIP! DO not select a dress that requires you to go on a starvation diet. Like a fighter getting ready for a big fight, you will wind up light headed from dehydration by rushing to lose a little weight.
To save money, choose a date that is not when most people typically get married. Most people get married between May and December. These are the times when wedding venues are most expensive. Your best bet is to book your venue as soon as possible to secure the best possible price.
TIP! If you are looking to dazzle your guests but cannot afford a hit to the wallet, consider renting diamond jewelry. This is a way to achieve the amazing look you are striving for without breaking the bank.
You can not serve everyone’s favorite top-shelf drink or you would quickly exceed the price of the dress, so consider what you like, and what will keep you within your budget. If there’s a bar that’s open, it can be expensive, especially the longer it’s open. The venue representative will be able to advise you of the various alcohol service options available.
TIP! When it comes to the decor of your wedding, spice things up with small, but meaningful decorative items. For example, the bow in your hair can be the same as those used in the floral arrangements on the tables.
Writing your vows is an important part of your wedding ceremony, and you should go slowly and think hard about what you want to say. Marriage is supposed to mean the rest of your life, including both ups and downs. When you are saying your vows ensure your spouse knows and understands that you love them with all of your heart.
TIP! Don’t forget about the transportation on your wedding day. It is good to have taxis or limos to help guests get back to their hotels or lodging after the reception.
Don’t wait until your wedding day to try walking in your shoes and gown. Practice going down the aisle until you feel comfortable. If you are afraid of falling, consider wearing flats. A sensible pair of shoes is better than injuring yourself by wearing high heels.
TIP! If you feel as though it is wasteful to pay hundreds of dollars for a cake that will have a lot left over, consider a smaller bakery to create a smaller cake that will cost less and be more personal. There are boutiques that will bake fresh cupcakes with very few calories specifically for your event, and deliver them.
Don’t make guests wait around while taking pictures. Many of these pictures can be taken before the wedding so that you don’t waste a minute of your reception time. Pictures of the parents with the bride and groom are also able to be shot beforehand and reduce the wait time for the guests at the reception.
TIP! Don’t overcrowd your wedding reception tables with excessive flowers. A lot of the time flowers in the middle of the table are an annoyance.
Find out if the lights at your reception venue are the type that can be dimmed. This may seem minor, but lighting is important to setting the mood and dimmed lights are preferable for your first dance. Check out the lighting available at different venues before picking one.
TIP! You should let the DJ know what is okay to play and what isn’t okay to play. Make the list of music to be avoided with your partner.
If you choose a wedding cake full of vibrant color that stands out as a focal point in your reception, you can enhance it further by presenting it on top of a fabric swatch coordinated with the cake itself. Good options include designer prints, novelty fabrics or special occasion fabrics like satin, velvet or silk.
TIP! The venue that you select for your wedding reception should have enough space for dancing and activities. Forgetting this can end with a cramped reception, so don’t forget this important detail.
If the couple getting married has a strong love for travel, try to incorporate design elements that reflect this in the planning and decoration process. Your invitations, notices, and R.S.V.P. cards can be designed to match the theme or your wedding. A classic leather suitcase may be kept open to show family photos, wedding programs or favors.
As an example, you might want to try a menu that includes popular contemporary fusion dishes. You can also offer desserts, drinks, or edible favors with an ethnic twist.
TIP! Avoid having your guests standing around waiting while you have your pictures taken. The photos concerning the rest of the wedding party should be done in advance.
Dress any children attending your ceremony in comfortable attire. Make sure all their clothes are not scratchy or binding. New shoes need to be broken in so that they don’t cause pain on the big day. Taking care of these small details will allow children to focus on participation in the wedding instead of fussing with their attire.
TIP! If you can afford it, consider a cruise ship wedding, inviting only close family and friends. This means you can start your honeymoon immediately.
Dependent on the state where the wedding is to occur, certain popular flowers, such as those that bloom in your state, might not be easily available especially if they are not in season. Make contact with professionals who reside near your destination site to inquire which flowers are in bloom and available to use for your ceremony.
TIP! If you want to have multiple courses during your meal, give them some sweets and appetizers on every table to keep them busy as serving takes place. Get sugar roses in colors that match your theme, or perhaps some crisp crackers.
If your reception does not involve a sit down meal, hire furniture instead of traditional tables. Things like cushy sectional couches, chaises and lounges can provide a great way for your guests to interact. Comfortable seating will make your guests feel relaxed and at home, permitting them to enjoy lounging areas around your location.
TIP! Your caterer needs to know if you are planning on having a reception outdoors. Certain foods do not do well in extremely warm temperatures; others are not heavy enough to withstand the wind.
If you plan a destination wedding, consider your guests’ travel arrangements. Some guests may have conflicts with the timing or with the costs of attending. You can send out invitations or reminders to save the date as far as eight months ahead of time. This will allow your guests to make proper arrangements.
TIP! If you are planning a destination wedding, be sure to know the legal requirements for getting married in that location. Don’t be surprised at the last minute by unknown regulations, red tape or fees that you did not expect.
Now you are ready to plan a wedding, but you wonder how to accomplish everything within your budget. You want everything to be perfect, but not if you have to go bankrupt for it. This article was meant to give you several great tips for saving money during the wedding planning process. Take advantage of the wisdom here and have fun at your wedding!

Ling Lee: British Etiquette
Cambridge Dictionary defines etiquette as “a  set of rules or customs that control accepted behavior in particular social groups or social situations.”
Every culture across the ages and races has been defined by the concept of etiquette and accepted social interactions and norms. As far as British etiquette is concerned, it is more of social appropriate behaviors, some of which are practiced the world over. The British in particular has historically placed a great deal of importance in good manners in relation to speech and body language and the key is politeness. British etiquette dictates courteousness at all times.
I first experienced British etiquette when I had a short stint as a student in Edinburgh the UK in 2011. As an international student, a brief and guide to some of the most common codes of British etiquette were given to every international student. This is in addition to some of my experiences while studying there.
I always find that the British are always smartly dressed, especially those with social status like the lecturers and professors, some students dressed rather fashionable. As Asian from a down to earth family of a developing country like Malaysia, such serious, classy and formal attire ( more like the upper class British from the movie “ The Titanic “ ) do give me a sense of respect towards them. On the flip side, sometimes I felt that they are rather snobbish and arrogance, perhaps due to their ignorance about Asian culture. It is not surprising that it took me quite a while to have some British students open up and accept me as a friend.
It is quite common to find that British seems to always over apologized. For example, if I have mistakenly sat on a seat that have previously reserved or taken, the person who reserved that seat would say, I am so sorry but you appeared to be sitting in my seat “. If someone accidentally spill coffee, again it is quite common for the victim to apologize. Again, below is a typical example of over-apologizing short conversation:
Brit 1: Sorry, are you in the queue?
Brit 2: Oh, no I’m not, sorry!
Brit 1: Oh, sorry.
Funny but it is true. To Asian like me, it sounds rather awkward. It appears that apologizing as a victim is a very English thing to do.
One of the best examples of British etiquette, which I truly admire, is punctuality and it is of traditional importance in the British society. It is considered rude to arrive late to a business meeting, medical appointment or social occasion such as wedding. It is advisable to arrive 5 to 10 minutes earlier to appear professional as a mark of respect to the host. Conversely, arriving too early could appear slightly rude and ruin the occasion of the host if the host is still in the midst of preparing for the event. Similarly, an unannounced house call is often frowned upon as it may inconvenience the host. I would like to embarrassingly add here that Chinese Malaysian has a habit of being late at marriage dinner. If an invitation card states that dinner will be served at 8pm, it is not surprised that many come late and the punctual guests are forced to wait before dinner can start. As such, I did attend wedding dinner before that end past midnight!
An invited guest to a British dinner party, it is customary to bring along a gift to the host or hostess, such as a bottle of wine, a bouquet of flowers or chocolates. Good table manners are essential, particularly when you are attending a formal dinner or buffet. It is deemed inappropriate to use fingers rather than cutlery to eat. The cutlery should be held correctly, the knife in the right hand and the fork in the left. At a formal dinner party when there are numerous utensils at your place settings, it is customary to begin with the utensils on the outside and work your ways with each course. Keep elbows off the table and keep phones out of sight at the dining table, and avoid text while speaking to people. Wine glass should not be filled more than halfway to allow a wine space to breath when you swirl the glass. Never lift the bowl to drink or eat. Wait until every one is served before you start eating. While eating. It is frowned upon making noise, chewing with mouth open or talk while the food is still in your mouth Place the cutlery in the middle of the plate to signal that you have finished eating. It is all a question of how a person, indirectly his or her family, was brought up to adhere to the etiquette or good manners.
On the same note, it is interesting to learn that in many private high school in Japan, students in their junior year would go on a ‘fields trip ‘ to a fine restaurant, usually a large hotel, and are taught‘ table manners ‘ by the restaurant staff. Nevertheless, imposing Western or Japanese etiquette on other nations may not be appropriate due to different cultures, customs or even religious beliefs.
Good manners form a major part of British etiquette, I just can’t help but draw parallels to Muslim Malaysians who would always greet their elders, especially family members, by bowing and gently kiss the elder’s right hand. For the Japanese, they normally greet by bowing to each other and will never stop until the counterpart stop bowing! Japanese athletes would also give a customary bow before and after a game.
Whilst we find orderly of queuing is common in Britain, we also find that saying ‘please‘ and ‘thank you‘ is equally common. It is considered polite and well mannered and is a regularity of British speech. In Britain, every social transaction is eased by reiteration of these phrases from both parties.
Unlike many countries, in Britain it would consider rather rude to ask or discuss how much you earn and how old you are (especially asking about women’s age). It is strictly a taboo subject according to British Etiquette and can be embarrassing just to discuss it.
Chivalry is seen as British trait and a distinguished feature of a gentleman. In old English Literature, women swoon chivalrous men. Some common examples of modern chivalry for the 21st century include opening the door for ladies, offering jacket if she is cold, and offering a lady your seat if she is standing. Nevertheless, young ladies having good manners and etiquette is an attribute particularly crucial in securing husband.
Women in Britain are entitled to equal respect and status as man, both at work and daily life. The British has the habit to use affectionate names when addressing someone, so do not take any offence if they call you love, dearie or darling. These are commonly used and considered rude.
When a teacher or anyone in a position of authority ask you to do something, you must respect them and do it. It is very disrespect people in authority. From the Asian perspective, the same respect is also given to those in authority. It is the emergence of multiculturism and the advent of internet is posing as a challenge to the traditional etiquette in general, regardless of social group or ethnicity.
In the UK, tea is an integral part of everyday life. It is part of many British people’s daily routine and serves many social functions. The novel “A Passage To India” by E.M. Foster, tea party was commonly described as an important British social functions. Tea has a long history in Britain. It was over the course of several hundred years that tea gained its place as Britain’s national drink and only recently its health properties are recognized.
You will be offered a cup of tea anywhere you go in the UK. Many tea shops and cafes are common. Afternoon tea is a big tradition in the UK. Here are some polite ways to drink tea in the UK:
-          Tea should be poured first and milk or sugar added afterwards.
-          Never slurp tea.
-          If in a group and if tea is served in a pot and is placed near you, it is polite to pour tea for the rest of the group.
In today’s society, the recent rise in multiculturism, etiquette in Britain has evolved and has become less formal due to changing economy, lifestyle, social and gender equality laws. Britain has shifted from household etiquette to emphasis of business etiquette. The rise of online business and social media sites has seen the creation of online society with its own rules of network etiquette involving communications such as emails, blogs and WhatsApp. It is not surprising that traditional accepted behaviors of the old may not have the influence they once did.

Real Richmond Wedding: Carmen and Shaun at The Renaissance
Carmen and Shaun
January 14, 2017
How They Met
Carmen tells us, “Shaun and I met while I was still in medical school. He was visiting his best friend at the time who happened to be friends with one of my classmates. We were celebrating the end of term at a watering hole in Shockoe Bottom.  After giving him my number, Shaun waited a week to call me and to be honest, being busy with medical school, so I didn’t fret about it too much! Later I found out that he waited to call me only because he knew I had a big exam to study for and didn’t want to become a distraction.
When he asked me out on our first date, he took me to his all-time favorite restaurant: Olive Garden! I will always remember our first date, not only because I think it was a perfect night, but also for the fact that he was pulled over by the police for having his windows tinted too dark! We still laugh when we reminisce about it. I think the cop let him off the hook without a ticket because he knew we were on our first date! Since then, the rest is history and our love has been influenced in several ways, from our different cultural upbringings to our mutual love for traveling.”
How He Asked
“We both love experiencing different cultures and communities and often go on international and transcontinental vacations (see our adventures together on Instagram @cd_mcrae), so it was no surprise that Shaun would put some thought into the proposal while we were on a trip traveling together. He proposed on our Alaskan vacation in June 2015 while we were hiking Mt. Roberts in Juneau.
Given that we were living long distance at the time, it was definitely unexpected. Shaun was so sneaky planning everything up to the proposal, having actually bought the engagement ring 8 months prior to our trip and flying with it from Virginia to Alaska! I would never have known though, since he would keep sending me potential engagement ring pictures via email or text every couple of weeks up until we left for Alaska so that I would think he was still looking for a ring. It is most perfect canary diamond ring and points to how well he knows me and the style that I love!”
The Perfect Place
While we were planning our wedding and looking for venues, I was living in Colorado and Shaun was still living in Richmond. Living long distance made me rely on Shaun for a lot of the initial planning and meeting with vendors for our wedding. Shaun was instrumental in helping to find the best venue that fit both our styles; he met with pretty much all of our vendors before I did, and I trusted him in maintaining our shared vision for our wedding. Since our love story started in Richmond, we decided to have the wedding here! We both love the historic nature and architecture that is unique to this city. When Shaun visited and sent me pictures of The Renaissance, I fell in love with the high ceilings and chandeliers — not to mention the historic bar!
I envisioned a wedding with vintage style elements, and The Renaissance fit that vision well. Shaun and I frequent art museums in every city we travel to and almost always find ourselves most inspired by the Renaissance era.
Given that both of us grew up in different cultures, we wanted to incorporate a multicultural aspect to our wedding. My ethnicity is Chinese, and I wanted to keep an element of my culture infused within our wedding day. We decided to incorporate the traditional Chinese tea ceremony and traditional Chinese bridal attire (known as a cheongsam). We also incorporated my culture into some of the finer details of the wedding, including the gift boxes and personalized appetizers. The Renaissance was willing to work with us on creating our own recipes for the chef to try and incorporate those appetizers into our tasting and our wedding.
Decor Details
Our wedding colors were shades of purple, gray, and gold, which worked well together and complemented the chandeliers and original decor of the Renaissance. I didn’t want to have my bridesmaids wear the same type of purple, so I went for more of an ombre spectrum and had them choose different shades of purple as well their own style of dress. My goal was to truly have the girls feel comfortable for the day and also be able to wear their dress again with a style they picked for themselves.
I wanted tall centerpieces to play into the high ceilings in the ballroom and wanted to incorporate our wedding colors into our flowers. For the wedding ceremony, I loved the idea of having columns with the tall centerpieces lining the aisle. We were able to repurpose these for the centerpieces in our reception as well.
We decided to use wedding favor boxes with the Chinese characters “double happiness” in our wedding to infuse an element of my Chinese heritage. We didn’t want a traditional guestbook, so we opted for a canvas picture of the states of Virginia and Colorado interconnected together, since we were living long distance for so long while building and maintaining a strong relationship.
The Wow Factor
We focused more on the reception as a whole and wanted our guests to enjoy themselves with an open bar. Shaun and I loved the historic bar at the Renaissance and were able to incorporate our own style with our signature drinks. We wanted our guests to feel as if they were joining us in the start of our marriage.
The Best Part
Shaun and I’s favorite part was being able to greet our guests and catch up with our family friends who traveled to see us. We both value family and friends, and being able to share our wedding day with them is the best part!
Advice for Future Couples
Carmen has some great advice for couples currently planning! “Planning a wedding remotely can seem stressful, but find vendors who are willing to work with you. Also, Pinterest will be your friend! I have tons of boards where I pinned all my favorite designs and then searched the internet for similar purchases. It also gives a good visual for your makeup/hair vendors to get a good idea of your style!”
