MATHIAS ILESAR MOODBOARD: POST-ORDER 66 YEARS

Ages 12 to 19. (18 BBY to 11 BBY). Guardians: The Ravagers, a mercenary gang. Leader is Rixar Carden. If you find a child with no name, crouched and working in a weapon maker's workshop, able to test the knives on his skin and heal, you don't pass the chance to offer a deal. Small hands are good at what you can't do, especially if they can be cut off with no consequence. If the boy can disappear from sight and back again. Rixar and the Ravagers gave Mathias a deal, work for them and he gets to eat, a place to sleep. That’s all life is, meeting some assholes and staying alive.

A rebellion must always be on the move. To remain stagnant, even for a moment, is to invite death. Even a brief respite bears the weight of the enemy breathing closer at the back of the neck. A rebellion is born of constant chaotic animation, and the hangar bay is the pulsing beating heart of it all.

The dull hum of industry surrounds you the moment you step onto the smooth floors, and the constant throb of machinery matches your heartbeat in your ears. You watch as an X-Wing spirals past the opening at the other end of the bay - a practice run, a constant reminder of perpetual vigilance – while a small cargo ship settles in an open docking slot nearby. Someone pushes past you, racing towards another ship, with a droid hot on their tail. It beeps a small apology, before spinning on its heel to follow its master. Through it all, you hear the soft sound of spinning metal. Consistent, constant, like someone thumbing a worry stone.

You follow it, past a repair droid burning through a convoluted tangle of wires and find him tucked behind a black and gold X-Wing fighter. Nestled against a cargo pallet, boots on the box in front of him, back against the netted shipment behind him, his brow is furrowed at some puzzle. You get the distinct impression that he’s been sitting there for quite some time, turning the gears in his hands over and over. He looks up, and his frown turns into a wide smile.

You heard word that Dorian Valara has long taken to the solitude of Yavin IV’s jungles. After nearly an hour of trudging through wet earth and trees, you wonder, idly, how he even manages to make it back to the base on his own. Thunder crashes; too far away to be a problem, for now.

A small brook left behind from one of the recent floods is what guides you on a winding path until finally, you enter a clearing. Nestled neatly between the lush green is a modest little hut. Birds chirp all around you, accompanied by the sound of wind chimes. You find him seated with his legs folded atop a warm, flat, moss-covered stone. THE APPRENTICES SERIES. (1/2)  ↪ ALEU QUALTO. “THE ARCHER”. JEDI KNIGHT. 

Aleu Qualto was Rishla’s first Padawan. Brought from a Dathomiri colony to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant before she was even a toddler, when she exibited signs of Force-sensitivity (her family refused to allow her to be taken in by the Night Sisters). Could always be found by the Crechemasters climbing between the rafters. Taken on as Rishla’s student when she was 13, and when Rishla was 23. 

As a student, Rishla noted Aleu’s ever present sense of humor. What Aleu lacked for stamina, she made up for in excellent battle strategizing—in some way, Aleu always played the long game. Due to her shortfallings in dueling, Rishla constructed a bow-and-arrow for her that blended Jedi technology with that of the Night Sisters on Dathomir. 

Knighted at age 21 after an eight year apprenticeship; at 22, took on her own Padawan, Naja Darsten. The two went to battle together during the Clone Wars. However, Aleu Qualto was killed after a Separatist ambush on her encampment in 20 BBY. She was 23 years old. 

(See, Aleu had never severed her training bond with Rishla when she was Knighted. Rishla felt her death the exact moment it happened.)

With Master Montrose, Atticus and Kai for their years traveled to small villages as relief mission teams. Kai's attack on the Temple and on their Padawan was slow coming, but witnessed by Atticus who was too young to realize they were drowning into the Dark. Atticus was left with permenart scars before they were locked in the Citadel, and still clinging to each other, Kai has slowly been poisioning him since their trial, sending visions and halluciantions. He's Kai's own precoius secret within the Inquisitors, their prey, watching from behind his eyes.

Fein has held onto few aspects of his Mirialan heritage. One - his skin - he cannot change, no matter how much he’d want to; but the other - his tattoos - he chose and will continue to add. Mirialans believe the worth of the individual is dependent upon their contributions to the society as a whole, and Fein takes that concept to heart. His tattoos - geometric patterns that have meaning to him and only him - tell of his successes and failures, both in the skies and in the pits. Before Order 66, he had only just begun decorating his body. Now, he finds himself under Kess’ needle often, the free space of his skin shrinking with each flight and each battle. 

In the Pits, his armor was patchwork - a mismatch of used and worn leather straps that would hardly stop the edge of a dull blade, let alone one sharpened to kill. He got more bruises and cuts from broken buckles and leather snapping in the midst of a fight than from blades and brawls. When Fulcrum came for him, he didn’t give his armor a second glance, choosing instead to take only one thing from his cells deep beneath the blood soaked sand - a blanket. It kept him warm on cold nights, soothed his aching muscles, and made him remember he was still alive underneath the layers of nightmares. 

On Yavin, his creche mother, his Master, Noa took the blanket from his hands and witnessed his failures. In the folds and worn corners she saw his pain, saw his blood, and saw him spill blood. She saw the nights he cried in the filthy corners of the cells, and the nights when he finally forgot how to sob and was left with nothing but darkness and the folds of that very blanket. She saw, and she sewed the blanket into something new, a cloak, a cover, a loose covering he could slip in and out of with ease with a cowl neck to hide the thick scars along his neck that echoed the straps of the Stormtrooper’s favorite weapon of interrogation. 

He wears his sweater every day over loose clothes, over thinning shirts that could be his or could be Matthias’ (neither of them knows, and Matt steals it all anyway). Fein, above all else, likes to be comfortable. No pinching straps or tight pants anymore, now they cut off at the knee and easily allow him to fall into a meditative seat or slide along the floor under an X-Wing badly in need of repairs.

In the pits, they shaved his head, and kept it close cut (blood cuts, they called them - whether to keep the enemy’s blood from congealing in his hair, or because of the cuts their razors left with each careless hack at braided locks, Fein didn’t know). On Yavin, he grows it how he always liked - long in the back, short and out of his face at the sides. His family braids it, marking him again as a Padawan - as theirs.
