Exit Through The (NPR) Gift Shop: Mason Estevez
Tumblr media
Name: Mason Estevez
Intern position: Audience Relations Intern
Hometown/College: Kansas City, MO / University of Alabama
Favorite D.C Spot: Showtime and The Pug are good dive bars to go to if paying $11 for a vodka soda on a crowded rooftop sounds like a personalized version of hell.
Favorite NPR show, blog, or podcast: Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!
Number one song you’re listening to right now: Planetarium - Slothrust
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: Spending time with other NPR interns, who are all talented and smart people that should be listened to/hired/obeyed.
Top #NPRLife moment: A tour of the building with the architects that designed it. They're super in to the staircase. It's a nice staircase.
Dream Tiny Desk: Jeffrey Lewis
What’s next for you: I've assured my mother that I will figure that out.
Advice for future interns: The coffee in the cafeteria is way better than the coffee machines throughout the building. They have to make a lot for the people here. Learn the morning rhythm of it and make sure to show up when it's most likely to be full so you don't have to wait for it to be changed out.

Exit Through The (NPR) Gift Shop: Shane McKeon
Tumblr media
Name: Shane McKeon
Intern position: Planet Money Intern
Twitter handle: @Shane_McKeon
Hometown/College: Shaker Heights, Ohio
Favorite D.C Spot: Planet Money is in NPR's New York bureau. But when I'm in D.C. I always make a trip to Pleasant Pops in Adams Morgan.
Favorite NPR show, blog, or podcast: I will listen to Terry Gross ask anyone about anything for any amount of time.
Number one song you’re listening to right now: Before The World Was Big - Girlpool
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: I hosted an episode of Planet Money after, um, the entire team mysteriously disappeared into a spooky manor house haunted by the 2008 financial crisis?
Top #NPRLife moment: I walked by Timothée Chalamet in the bureau kitchen and quite nearly fainted.
Dream Tiny Desk: Bjork. Or Lil B
What’s next for you: Student loan repayment
Advice for future interns: Here's advice about advice. Get coffee with as many people as possible. This no doubt has been and will be repeated ad infinitum on this Tumblr and elsewhere, but: NPR folks are generally happy to make time for you.
When someone gives you 20 minutes, spin it into gold. Pride yourself on asking thoughtful, precise questions. I'm talking questions rivaling the deep thoughtfulness of Terry Gross or Nardwuar.
Later, when you digest their advice, I offer this probiotic: Advice is shaped by (and often serves to justify, or give logic to, if only retroactively) someone's individual life experience. If someone worked at X, they may encourage you to also do X. (Or, if they really loathed X, they might suggest Y.) It doesn't mean their advice is not useful. But it behooves you to imagine where certain advice might come from. Having that extra layer of data will help you weigh big Life Decisions later.
This might be a totally banal and familiar insight. In which case, my consolation advice: Turn on push notifications for the #freefood Slack channel.

Top #NPRLife moment: When my intern friends and I were in the elevator with Jarl, the CEO, and he complimented our smiles.
Dream Tiny Desk: CARLA BRUNI = THE PINNACLE OF FRENCH BEAUTY
What’s next for you: I'm heading back to school to finish up my last two quarters as a senior at Dartmouth. Hopefully after that, I'll be heading off to graduate school for Quantitative Economics!
Advice for future interns: Take all the books on the bookshelves! There are multiple bookshelves on multiple floors stocked with books that have just been published and are unreleased. These books are up-for-grabs, and I highly recommend taking all the books that you are interested in! Make friends with the interns and your team!!! IT WILL MAKE OR BREAK YOUR EXPERIENCE!

Exit Through The (NPR) Gift Shop: Gabriel Dunatov
Tumblr media
Name: Gabriel Dunatov
Intern position: Morning Edition Intern
Twitter handle: @GabrielDunatov
Hometown/College: Issaquah, WA, then Occidental College (in Los Angeles, CA)
Favorite D.C Spot: Rock Creek Park, and the exercise/calisthenics trail on the way
Favorite NPR show, blog, or podcast: Morning Edition, Fresh Air, and Rough Translation
Number one song you’re listening to right now: "Saturday Nights" by Khalid
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: Recorded and asked questions at a press briefing, standing in for Michele Kelemen!
Top #NPRLife moment: My week working on the overnight shift, leaving work and seeing the sun rise
Dream Tiny Desk: City and Colour or Chance the Rapper (again)
What’s next for you: I'll be helping out at Morning Edition to assist our team through the holidays. One day I'd love do more reporting in the field.
Advice for future interns: Respect your work and others will do the same. The internship can be fun, but don't get too caught up in the novelty and cute optics. You may be called on to cover tragedies: shootings, war, obituaries. Show that you take your work seriously.
Pitch stories you care about, that resonate with you. Think of yourself as a contributor, not just an intern. The people who interact with you everyday will take notice.
On the other side, remember this is important work but it's not worth sacrificing your health. It's never that deep. Do what you need to do for yourself: breath, take walks, work out, and don't forget the people you care about.

Exit Through the (NPR) Gift Shop: Mia Venkat
Tumblr media
Name: Mia Venkat
Intern position: How I Built This Intern
Hometown/College: Ashburn, VA. / University of Virginia
Favorite D.C Spot: The Trader Joe's on M st. where you can find Literally Every Other NPR Employee from 5pm-6pm
Favorite NPR show, blog, or podcast: Hidden Brain gives me strong factoids to drop over coffee with friends. Just have to casually work Thomas Jefferson's problematic legacy into conversation and then it's over for you all.
Number one song you’re listening to right now: ICY GRL -Saweetie. Every time I had a big assignment to tackle I would listen to this to pump me up. One time my headphones weren't actually plugged in so all of Floor 6 heard CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP GET GUAP full vol. NPR is really polite and everyone acted like they couldn't hear it <3
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: Going to NYC for the How I Built This live show with the Glossier CEO & founder Emily Weiss. I did all the research for the interview so I knew literally everything about Emily Weiss and was 0% chill when I met her. Didn't get any free Glossier swag but I'm fine –– I'm actually over it already.
Top #NPRLife moment: Going into the kitchen and everyone is wearing mom jeans and white sneaks.
Dream Tiny Desk: If Rihanna did a Tiny Desk and sang Love On The Brain I wouldn't need food or water ever again.
What’s next for you: I'll be staying on the HIBT team until the end of January, and then ?????? but that's showbiz baby
Advice for future interns: Look up the pictures of all the hosts of the shows before you get here so you don't go to a happy hour and embarrass yourself in front of Sam Sanders when you ask him what he does at NPR. How am I supposed to just know your face when the medium is RADIO ! ! We're cool now though I think.

Exit Through The (NPR) Gift Shop: Amanda Morris
Tumblr media
Name: Amanda Morris
Intern position: National Desk Intern
Twitter handle: @AmandaMoMorris
Hometown/College: Farmington, Connecticut & Harleysville, Pennsylvania/New York University
Favorite D.C Spot: I'm actually a big fan of my neighborhood- Glover Park. I also like the U.S. Botanic Garden & all the art museums.
Favorite NPR show, blog, or podcast: Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! (I'm going to a live taping of it in New York soon!)
Number one song you’re listening to right now: "Not Today" by Alessia Cara
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: Every single bit of reporting I did was so rewarding- but two of my favorite experiences were rushing out to cover a Protect Mueller rally at the White House and working on an in-depth series on deaf unemployment where I got to go to a Bison Tank pitch contest at Gallaudet - it was like Shark Tank, but the contestants were deaf.
Top #NPRLife moment: I accidentally rode in the elevator with Florence & the Machine and I was casually trying not to geek out.
Dream Tiny Desk: Mary J. Blige doing her song, "Just Fine."
What’s next for you: I'm jazzed to say that I'll be staying on the National Desk as a temp!!!!!
Advice for future interns: Make a list of internship goals on the first day you arrive so that you can stay focused. Do your "homework" to prepare for work every day.  Pitch aggressively. Soak up every minute here - the people are so wonderful and the work is beyond rewarding.

Favorite NPR show, blog, or podcast: Code Switch
Number one song you’re listening to right now: If I’m Lyin’, I’m Flyin by Kodak Black
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: Hmmm, where do I start? One of the coolest things I’ve done was my research on the recently enacted Music Modernization Act. It was one of my first assignments and through my research I was able to take an in-depth look at the status of the Act and its potential effect on public radio. I also had the chance to lead a meeting with NPR’s Visuals Team where I was able to instruct and inform the team on the best practices for properly licensing and redistributing third party content.

Exit Through The (NPR) Gift Shop: Cat Schuknecht
Tumblr media
Name: Cat Schuknecht
Intern position: Investigations Unit intern
Twitter handle: @catschuknecht
Hometown/College: I grew up in San Francisco and stuck around California for college and grad school. I got my undergraduate degree from UCLA and recently finished up my master’s at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, where I specialized in audio and data journalism.
Favorite D.C Spot: Rock Creek Park is all I need. Capitol Hill Books is a close second.
Favorite NPR show, blog, or podcast: NPR’s flagship show, All Things Considered. It’s a classic, and the show’s jazzy theme music still makes me smile every time I hear it. I like Embedded, too, for its investigative approach and ambitious stories.
Number one song you’re listening to right now: 'Came a Long Way' by Heartless Bastards.
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: I got to contribute to the network’s special coverage of the Kavanaugh-Blasey Ford hearing. I went into the field in search of court documents, then tracked down one of Kavanaugh's former classmates, who ended up being interviewed on Morning Edition.
I also work alongside NPR’s kind, brilliant and award-winning investigative reporters and producers everyday. That’s pretty cool, too.
Top #NPRLife moment: Scoring Hozier tickets from All Songs Considered host, Bob Boilen.
Dream Tiny Desk: Joan Jett. Or Robyn.
What’s next for you: I’m sticking around NPR for a bit and looking for my next story.
Advice for future interns: Listen to this audio book — NPR: The First Forty Years. Remember the hosts and reporters you hear from NPR's first two decades on the air and see how many of them you can try to meet while you’re here. You're at a journalism institution with a magical history, so find time to get to know the people who made NPR what it is.
And, if you're based in the D.C. office, take the extended building tour. I didn't take it, but my Mom did, and now she knows way more NPR trivia that I do, which is unacceptable! (Did you know the voice that announces the floor numbers in the elevators is Susan Stamberg?!)

Number one song that you’re listening to right now: Oblivion (feat. Susanne Sundfør), by M83
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: Honestly, see answer below this, but overall, it’s probably Angela Hsieh (the Visuals intern) and I wiggling our way into the Tiny Desk Crew by live-drawing all the artists--and getting their signatures at the end!
Top #NPRLife moment(s): Getting a yes to take a photo with Yo-Yo Ma and his sig because “I’m Asian.”
Dream Tiny Desk artist:
