Over the course of the pandemic Laura Fried @lauragfried “worked on a 5 month-long series (watercolor and/or pencil) to get through the isolation be sharing with friends, and meeting other makers in art groups over Zoom. The April (2021) series is comprised of a series of tracings on vellum, one-a-day for each warbler variety, with the commonality that branches connect the birds through the composition. Like a vitamin, one-a-day warblers help keep the brain sharp as one reacquaints themselves with the shapes, values and signatures of these birds before their much anticipated May arrival.” The entire sketchbook is part “Expanding Voices: Perspectives on Birding.” The show is up through the month of October. #ArtExhibition #VermontArtist #VermontArt #BirdArt #ExpandingVoices #sketchbook (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-lyCPro-8/?utm_medium=tumblr

“rejoice” by Ariel Kaile McKnight Burgess is one of three poems featured in the art show “Expanding Voices: Perspectives on Birding” As part of the show each artist reflected on 2020 and how their perspective on birds, birding and conservation was influenced by the events of 2020. @akmckb writes in her artist statement, “2020 was a kaleidoscope of feeling and perspectives related to the environment and how we care for it. It was filled with silver lining hope that shutdown would reduce CO2 emissions, joy of silent cities filled with bird song instead of traffic….” #FeaturedArtist #ExpandingVoices #PerspectivesOnBirding #BirdsOfVermontMuseum #VermontPoet #VermontArtist (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVN83TUrn-7/?utm_medium=tumblr

Lori Hinrichsen created this collage on paper in 2021 for our “Expanding Voices: Perspectives on Birding” art show. “Nest (view from inside out)” is displayed along with a second piece, “Across the Miles (View From Outside In).” The two pieces reflect one view from inside looking out, and the other from the outside looking in. “The window became symbolic in so many ways. My perch. The view from my Window prompted a whole series of artwork. The artworks in this show are part of that series and are my perspectives. Whether I am on my couch or in my kayak I take great joy in observing g the natural world. Engaging in this daily practice of observation has provided hope and possibilities of what can be.” - Lori Hinrichsen To see more of Lori’s work see her website lorihinrichsen.com The exhibit will be up through the end of this month, and the Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10-4. #FeaturedArtist #ExpandingVoices #PerspectivesOnBirding #BirdsOfVermontMuseum #VermontArt #VermontArtist #VermontMuseum #ArtExhibition #Nest (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVGEIY6r3B3/?utm_medium=tumblr

Sarah Rosedahl (@srosedahl) created this watercolor “Smothered” for our current exhibit “Expanding Voices: perspectives on birding.” Her painting for this show reflects her thoughts on a bird’s perspective, and is a reflection on loving our Snowy Owls to death. From her artist statement: “The pandemic encouraged more people to get outside, and for some, to pursue bird watching and bird photography as a new interest or hobby. The new interest is great, but what about the impact on birds if they are watched too closely or by too many people?” #FeaturedArtist #ExpandingVoices #PerspectivesOnBirding #BirdsOfVermontMuseum #VermontArt #VermontArtist #watercolor #SnowyOwl #VermontMuseum (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUIPwP_ro1r/?utm_medium=tumblr

Several events, opportunities, and experiences led to "Expanding Voices: Perspectives on Birding", this year's art show theme. One of those was the interaction between birder Christian Cooper and a white dog walker in Central Park. Another was one of its consequences, #BlackBirdersWeek. These, and more, highlighted how birding experiences can be dramatically different depending on the color of your skin. We listened, read, learned and continue learning what needs to change and how to become a more inclusive birding community. Christian Cooper, Alitha Martinez (@ariotstorm), Mark Morales (@mark_morales11) and Emilio Lopez (@emannland) created _It's a Bird_, a graphic novel based on Christian’s experience. The comic is the first in the REPRESENT! series. The comic is published by DC and can be accessed for free in several places online. With permission from Christian Cooper and the publisher, we have been given the opportunity to display a few of the pages as part of the art show. (It’s A Bird © DC and Christian Cooper.
