Watch: the evolution of desktop computer motherboards since the early 1990s

Mark Frauenfelder:
I recently discovered Christopher Barnatt's YouTube channel, ExplainingComputers, and I highly recommend it. Barnatt is the author of 13 books about computers and has taught for 25 years at the University of Nottingham. He explains digital technology very clearly, and many of his videos contain tests and demonstrations. In his latest video, he presents the evolution of computer motherboards since 1990, starting with the Intel 386 that ran at 20Mhz (no fan or heat sink needed!). It's amazing to see how things have changed in a few decades.

Surviving computer failure: When preparation counts!
November 19, 2021
Recently, the computer that I use for attending college online stopped working. I set it to sleep and walked away for a few hours. When I came back, it would not turn on anymore. It was certainly an inconvenience, but not a disaster.
Some advanced planning prevented the death of my college computer from being a catastrophe. Having a replacement computer available, using the 3-2-1 method of data backup, and the event happening on the perfect day for it, made the situation time consuming but not catastrophic.
I was able to recover quickly because I had a replacement computer available at home. As I am the tech person in my family, they rely on me to provide hardware and software support for whatever they want to do. Sometimes this means that a working desktop computer is needed with an hour of notice. This time I was the person in need of some replacement hardware. Fortunately, I had two devices available and was able to put the better one of the two into service immediately for the replacement of the computer that stopped working. If I had needed a replacement computer in an emergency, I would have used my Ultrabook, which I keep ready as a backup device for power failures and urgent needs. However, I had time to put the mini desktop I had available into service for permanent hardware replacement of the failed desktop computer. According to Tulloch, laptop and desktop computers will all fail eventually (Tulloch, 2018). Is that point today? Or will it be in ten years? Who knows! It can be prudent to have a replacement device ready just in case.
Using the 3-2-1 method of data backup ensured that no data was lost. The 3-2-1 method is where there are three copies of the data, two are local, and one is off-site (Barnatt, 2021). One copy of my data was stored on my desktop computer that failed, the other was on my Ultrabook, creating two local copies. The off-site copy was on Microsoft OneDrive (Microsoft, 2021) cloud storage, that is part of a Microsoft 365 subscription that I need to have for the college courses that I attend (Microsoft, 2021). Because of this, no data was lost. Not having a backup plan, whether you are an individual or a business, can be costly and difficult to recover from in the event of data loss (Rink, 2016). Using the 3-2-1 method for backing up your data can ensure that at least one copy of your data survives, making recovery from failed computer hardware possible.
Also, the computer failed on the perfect day. Since I was not in the middle of a critical project and there were no deadlines looming immediately, I had the luxury of time to get the replacement computer set-up to completely replace the one that stopped working. It took 20 hours to get running as before, just with a different computer in use now.
Overall, having a replacement device available immediately, using the 3-2-1 method for data backup, and having some luck with timing, made the recovery from the failure of my college computer possible in under one day. A little bit of planning can go a long way to prevent data loss and reduce the stress that occurs when a computer fails. This is as true for individuals wanting to safely store their irreplaceable family photos as it is for businesses that need to ensure that their information technology infrastructure and business data are stable for business continuity.
