Monday Cards - Decking About

Decks, decks, decks. Decks. Today we will be mostly cleaning & catching up as it’s been a mental winter festival period and I haven’t had time to sit with any of them properly for weeks. 

Their personalities (as they work with me at least) are WILDLY different, and I love that as it brings a whole new angle to a reading.

The Manga Tarot was my first deck and honestly, I got it so right. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but holds vast rewards for hard thinking and exploration. It’s easy to understand but there are so many layers that I can spend a long time unpicking a reading. Often it finds perspectives I’d never considered but wonder how I didn’t think of. It appreciates connection and analytical thinking but is quite idealistic, in a no-head-without-heart sort of way. It’s a very ‘human’ deck.

I find the Sasuraibito Tarot to be the gentlest of my decks. It’s not totally fluffy by any means, but it has a quiet confidence and soft strength that makes it a joy to read. It has a tendency to tell me what I’m REALLY thinking about if I’m not quite concentrating hard enough, in the way of a chiding but encouraging mother.

The Rider Tarot is, of course, a classic. I also find it the most ‘mystical’ of my decks. It looks hard at my intentions, and methods I can use to focus my efforts on a problem. It sometimes talks in concepts that aren’t immediately clear so I find myself coming back to personal readings from this deck later on, but it reads very clearly for other people.

The Fountain Tarot is my straight-talking, sometimes quiet, sometimes beautiful, sometimes ABSOLUTELY brutal deck. Often it dishes out things that are hard to hear but that’s good as far as I’m concerned. Even if I’m initially all “WOW ok you went there ta for that”. It reminds me that I have to listen, and be free of the need of one answer or another, and I’ll get what I damn well get. I adore it.

I’ve not explored deeply into the Mystic Mondays tarot just yet but so far I’ve found it verbose, lively, and sometimes a bit melodramatic! It doesn’t appreciate too much ritual or mysticism, rather it delivers as a modern, quick-and-dirty kind of deck. It’s one-card pulls are always useful and I’m looking forward to exploring it more fully as we go. You can find more at @mysticmondays.

I have been through SO many oracle decks I couldn’t get on with. So many. I’d almost given up by the time I found the Extraordinary Oracle (@extraordinaryoracle on tumblr.) It almost mirrors the way I practise. It’s both easy to read and good for pondering on and just handles anything I throw it in for. I often use it to read for people who don’t have a spiritual bone in their body and it’s great.

The Arcana of Astrology deck is gorgeous and useful for contextualising and divining as well as astrology. It often helps provide the window a reading should be seen through, like the grade on a film. I use individual cards on altars or in spells a lot too as a focus. And did I mention it’s pretty? SO PRETTY.

So there you have it - a little deck rundown for your Monday. Hopefully I’ll get to doing Monday cards every Monday... you never know.

New Deck Recommendations, please!

I wanted to see what everyone's favorite(s) decks were to read with - especially independently published decks. I love the personal connection they have with the creators - it helps me feel a little more tuned in the Rider Waite standard.

Are there different decks you use for different kinds of readings? How do you determine which deck to use?

I know connecting with a deck is a totally individual thing, so I'm excited to see the wide scope of tastes this community has!
