This is messy and lacks some detail (I just jotted down what I could remember from my draft) 馃檱馃檱
The name "Mikoto" is used ambiguously.
Beginning of Meme: mikoto commits the murder while wearing the hanged man
The hanged man -> self sacrifice, being trapped, surrender. Mikoto's denial of his self in order to pursue his ideal. Loss of his identity, signing himself for a life he will just be a puppet of. The hanged man may be represented as a mannequin. "I'd play dead even though I'm alive"
Victims were portrayed as mannequins. Mikoto killing the mannequins -> breaking "free" / end of mikoto as the hanged man
The shirt is then discarded, changing to a plain one. A state of uncertainty or as it is a clean white shirt -> denial of crime/fault.
Confronts the audience. Hairstyle: left part is hidden. Assigning sides to them is tricky since both Boku/ore was portrayed left + right. Even in mikoto's perspective the hair would cover up the right part.
Either Boku or ore is being hidden. But I'm choosing to believe it's boku. The way it switches to Boku waking up in headspace is like ore saying "see! He is innocent" (I am unsure)
But in short: tv scene -> confrontation to the audience/other people of his innocence.
Next scene: the mirror scene. Now mikoto confronts themself.
The body is discarded and the blood is washed away. "Doesn't matter if you didn't wish for it, can't get rid of me now"
No matter how it is denied, their lives have been altered. Mikoto cannot go back to normal. Ore(?) notices the how stressed Boku(?) is. Boku who is still unaccepting, sees ore as antagonistic.
Boku confronts the devil tarot and mimics the devil's pose.
The devil -> entrapment, slave to ones desire, "shadow self", violence, confronting fears. (A very hard card to interpret, for me 馃槶馃槶 so I am again unsure). I think MeMe focus on the devil as the repressed parts and fears of oneself.
As ore appears behind him in this scene. This might have to do with the concept of Ore being Boku's ideal self.
No matter what Boku says, he has a desire to "destroy" the life he was living in. Ore is a manifestation of that. But Boku dislikes this part of him, thus he is scared of Ore as well.
"it's the same anywhere I go, I'm already the fake one" <- Boku thoughts that he might responsible for this being the one who started the chain of events (calling back the the hanged man phase)
Next scene: mikoto baths in blood. Right after the attempts at calling for innocence + denial. Their life is stained, there is no going back to normal. They wake up to this reality.
Finally, the headspace is altered now red. 2 prominent cards: the fool (a beginning of a new journey) + death (change).
Ore punches the audience/intruder. "You will no longer partake in our thoughts"

IT WAS MEANT IN ANPOSTIVE WAY OF BEING A SNAKE KROW-
Like
You remind me of a snake, like the reptile, they look cool, you look cool, I love snakes, I love you
:(
He looks to you, then a little bashfully to the ground, biting his lips a little as he kind of shuffles in place.
"O-oh... t-that's what you m-meant. Oh... U-umm... o-okay. T-that's b-better..."
Pause.
"W-wait. You t-think I look c-cool??" You can see a tinge of a blush to his cheeks. He laughs a bit, but quickly covers his mouth with a hand. "Ahah... y-you f-flatter me D-Dove."

Biblical references with 09
(my hands are shaky writing this and my head hurts so pardon if this isn't coherent ;_;)
John and Crucifixion
Tumblr media
visuals (+ storytelling) point to john having the role of jesus.
the crown of thorns was used to mock and belittle his claim of being a king (or in john's case, a savior). the word savior in quotation marks (a way of directly quoting john's claims but also to put in in a sarcastic manner) also references INRI or INBI (the inscription placed on jesus' crucifix, again, to insult)
also within the course of Double, green and red are the main colors fighting for dominance. Red (john) + green (background/world). in this particular sequence the neon green over powers the red (or is it orange idk). this links it to the persecution of jesus (red/john) by the world (green).
Water and Blood
Tumblr media Tumblr media
water is associated with baptism + blood with sacrifice and crucifixtion (amongst many other biblical associations). and i think water -> mikoto, blood -> john. with mikoto changing himself for a new/"better" life and john sacrificing himself for mikoto's sake. theres many things about water + blood , i dont think i can fit all of them here ;_;
however i do think that this also references the phrase "blood is thicker than water" (since john -> jesus, we can also put mikoto in the role of mary) saying that john + mikoto's bond is more important than any other.
The Numbers 9 and 3
Mikoto has many references to the number 3. His prisoner number is nine which is 3x3. His chesspiece has 3 slabs + 3 paint strokes in Backdraft. RGB + CYMK color models which has been referenced on his mvs have 3 primary colors
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The number 3 is associated with wholeness and completion.
Jesus was one of three people that was crucified.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jesus is also a part of the Holy Family (along with mary and joseph) and the Holy Trinity:
Tumblr media
(this is my midokoto is the holy spirit agenda)
in addition jesus was crucified at nine in the morning and died at 3 in the afternoon.
okay my head hhurts too much now bye

i love this sequence so much because it's shows this struggle between him and how he's expected to be. he has the same pose as the mannequins, but just by being the only one there with clothes already makes him stand out. he soon becomes a very jittery and unstable collage where their existence is being forcibly written over (he is not a living person with needs, he is a double, a fake, an imitation, he is "mikoto" as the world expects him to be)

I thinks its interesting how Mikoto's crime lacks a portrayal of backstory. for all the other prisoners we were shown a "before", there's more information to speculate about their motivation. But Mikoto's mvs goes straight to the murder, the only scene we get is probably the montage of him coming home in MeMe and the phone scene in Double. We know that his murder was probably done in retaliation + has something do to with his work. But coupled with the "claim" that his victims were killed for being "annoying", it makes his crime look...baseless (not that it is, thats just the impression). So I'm not surprised that there are people out there that thinks John killed for no reason. Maybe it is attempting to villainize them in the audience eyes + people thinking that he also has the most gruesome crime. There's definitely something in there...
