F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom

I guess it depends on how you define being in a fandom--if it’s just consuming and appreciating a piece of content, then I guess my longest fandoms are Discworld, first read at 11 or so (that would be 1993), Chrono Trigger, played at the tender age of 13, and Final Fantasy VI (then called III in the US), played right after. I definitely had headcanons, theories, enjoyed fan art, etc... I never created anything for them until many years later, but I was definitely a passive fan (although come to think of it my very first proto-piece of fic was FFVI but I was too nervous to post it anywhere, even had I ever finished it). I had other early fandoms that I DID create content for, but were somewhat ephemeral insofar as my interest goes (Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon) by which I mean I enjoyed any kind of new content produced by my interest waned when there wasn’t any more of it. As far as longest active fandoms go, wherein I have been more or less constantly creating content and/or thinking about it, it’s gotta be Ghost Trick, which was pretty revolutionary in getting me to actually finish stuff and then also show people!

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)

1. More acknowledgement that it exists from its publisher! Ports for things! Anniversary celebrations! Official art! A sequel, I say nervously, because sequel culture kind of sucks and I don’t want a sequel that takes the cast from the first one and screws it all up for them again. Same world, more worldbuilding, possibly different characters with new interesting powers? Sissel can be there though. More puzzles! More tricks! No fridged wives!

2. More nuanced, critical thought and meta about people who aren’t Sissel or the main villain. I’m also going to piggyback off my answer here and say that I would specifically like to see this for Lynne, Emma, Memry, and the two spoiler ladies, just for variety’s sake?

3. This isn’t specific to GT fandom but I can extrapolate to most: if the canon presents the fans with women who SHOULD be interesting, nuanced, complex people (e.g. the Romantic Interest or idk, THE PROTAGONIST) but they just...aren’t, for one reason or the other, I’d love to see more involvement from the fans as a whole to remedy the situation, at least in fanon. If they can woobify hot villains and that’s publicly acceptable, we can ALSO make female protagonists more interesting on a much larger scale. Fight the internalized misogyny!!

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)

Since I did my more big GT headcanons here, let me do some smaller ones here. Trying to think of ones you don’t already know and add to some of that meta!

1. Kamila grows up an inventor. I think this is a given, but I think as she grows older and she has Sissel’s input, she can far surpass the Azul’s weird technology. Some of this goes to the police but far more of it will be used for countering the effects of Temsik in the world--if it was found once it will be found again! She and Sissel (and maybe Amelie in time) become the guardians and protectors of the park but in a way much more helpful than the one that’s already there

2. I touched on this in Mischief of the Gods but I think that in the new timeline there will be a need for a whole Special Investigations Unit specifically geared to tracking and checking the effects of Temsik, and who better to deal with it than our Odd Squad? Jowd as chief, Cabanela as deputy chief, Rindge as lieutenant, and Memry and Lynne as partners, with Sissel and Missile as occasional helpers and informants...even Bailey and his partner might have a place there. Heck, I’d like to think they can even get some of the Azuls on board over time, although maybe not the ones we know. Perhaps this is my Watch-loving heart, but I just want to read more case-fic about what they get up to...

Ships you cannot see happening: MCU, Steve/Tony. I can see it in a lot of the comic timelines and such, but not in the MCU. IMO, the relationship just wasn’t developed enough for the big rift in Civil War to make an emotional impact.

Ships that are canon but you don’t ship them anyway: FFVI, Locke/Celes. In my opinion, it’s canon in the same way that Cid’s death is canon. I just never let Cid die. FFX, Wakka/Lulu. Loved that they had a strong platonic M/F relationship in FFX. Still have no idea why the devs decided to pair them off in FFX-2.

Ships that are unpopular but you still love: MCU, Tony/Rhodey. Feel like these two never got the attention they deserved, frankly. Yes, they’re one of the more popular unpopular ones, but with MCU being such a huge fandom you have to factor that in. FFVII, Barret/anybody. I decided to check on the listings for Barret on AO3. If you filter by his name specifically you get 1272 works. Out of those, these are the only pairs that actually INVOLVE him in the top 10 relationships:

Cidgeon stared at the display. Blanca loafed on the ground and had Cabanela pinned against her side under her wing. He knew Belle had done much the same for him and Lovey-Dove through the night, but unlike Blanca, the chocobo had released him in the morning. Blanca seemed much less willing despite Cabanela’s protests and attempts to wriggle out from under her.

“Bright neeew day. We need to get movin’,” Cabanela said and tried to nudge at her wing.

Cidgeon eyed him. He looked awful and his attempted struggles had done nothing to help his now rumpled appearance on top of it. “Did you get any sleep last night?”

“Enough,” Cabanela said shortly.

Cidgeon rolled his eyes. And that could mean anything except anything sensible and he knew at least the night before had been restless. Add on the days of travel…

“We’ll rest here today.”

“What?” Cabanela exclaimed. “We are not losin’ more time.”

Once more he tried to slide out from under her wing. Blanca raised her head and hissed. Cabanela froze. Jowd finally looked up.

“That’s rare,” he said mildly.

“I’ll be f—.” Cabanela tried and lost the rest of his words in a gasp as Blanca pressed him down.

“Right,” Cidgeon said and prodded their fire back to life. “We stay. I assume you have no problem with that?” he directed at Jowd.

Jowd leaned back against Pinkie with a shrug, and patted her beak. “Makes no difference to me.”

Cabanela sagged back against Blanca. She did, in time, lift her wing just enough to let him turn over, fingers burrowing into her feathers. And she draped her wing gently back over him as he started to drift, and curled her head around with a satisfied little wark.

So they remained, ringed around their small fire, while the trench stretched away before them for another day.

Being 4+ years in the fandom?

The fandom is meh to me, not really some amazing supportive fandom as you think but there are some good picks in the litter. Thought you would think to being a series some people would expect crossover city, that’s not entirely. Some people have established rules, like I will only interact or rp with people from Dissidia or FF9 or something. I know it probably for comfort (still can’t figure but if it makes you happy), but then you got others go everywhere. So I’ll say the FF does have a lot of crossover compatibility - even ships are rare outside their own brand.

rare ships all around if you go outside your FF? want to Ship Freya and Baltheir? or Freya and Fran? can do or perhaps Zidane and Balthier for team thief? it can happen especially how both her

AU’s - you’ll never have a boring day here. It could be anything most popular is modern AU’s and what not.

Groups - I think FF groups still are around, I know Definite Delusion is still one right now, though I think Phoenix down is another. To me, I don’t think they last that long in terms of longevity but it’s a good start if you’re looking for a group.

Quite a number of supportive people - they’ll help you out even the large blogs like Mogglepalooza are a good start to help, even for resources.

Popular FF’s - FFVII (overrated), FFVIII, FFXIII (only lightning), FFX, FFXIV ( Haurechant was my boy…..gonna miss him ), FFXV (sigh), KH (well for now cause of the game - but we’ll see in a few months.)

crack - expect convos from Laguna and Baltheir on why its expected edgy teens would use something so complex as gunblade.

Support - bruh support is really good even with the right people. Just gotta find them is all.

cons:

underage ships -  yep, People still ship the old folks with the youngster. Don’t know why? 

duplicates/ favouritism - Like any fandom, if you go for the popular ones; cloud, lightning, noctis, squalls?  and so and so - you’re probably not going to enjoy doubles if your self conscious of your portrayal. Some people will have a preference for a certain Noctis, that might be yours or another im just saying. Thought some might use you as a backup dupe.

art thieves - people will steal the art and use it on their theme sadly 

Not enough F/F - we don't have enough here but it happens.

M/M fetishisation - it still is high in numbers, nothing with M/M but a lot of people do make it a fetish. I recall one Cor actually sleeping with Prompto quite a while ago and that Cor having relations with

limitations/ selectivity - Nothing new, but some people limit their interactions to characters of a series and what not. Do expect just don’t get mad just move on with it.

Unpopular FF’s - FII, FIII (no onion boys or void lady things here),FFIV (moon man and dragon man),  FFIX (Vivi is too important - he was the best blackmage i knew), FFX, FFVI, FFXIII (everyone besides lightning), FF: Tactics, FFIX, FFXII, WoFF, FF Type - 0, FFIX the best child -  they all need a lot of love unlike the popular ones

shit talk - expect it of course, or some envy. Because some of us can’t really talk about it like adults but it happens.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom : I’ve never really left a fandom, I guess. I started writing FFVI fic in about 1996, which was the first real fic I ever wrote, and I’m still kind of there.

O - Choose a song at random, which ship or character does it remind you of : I know it’s a totally inappropriate song for the fandom, but Hurricane from P!atD reminds me very much of the main character from Disco Elysium. (Is his name considered a spoiler?)

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything) : Uhhhh.... I think that the closest I have is that in my head, Auron (FFX) is one of the very, very, very few characters that has a set sexuality. Most of the time, everyone who doesn’t have a sexuality defined specifically in the text is bi until proven otherwise. Auron, in my headcanon, is gay. I’ve tried to write him with female characters and it never feels like it works for me.

A good friend of mine once said, “be the femslash change you want to see in the world.”

 A quip on a cliché, perhaps – but it resonated, and it really stuck with me. It’s been almost four years now that I’ve been writing femslash on tumblr in earnest, and this still rolls in my head like a mantra. Be the femslash change you want to see.

 I’ve always been a girl power kind of girl. As a little kid, I devoured The Babysitters Club and Betty & Veronica comics. As an awkward tween I read anything by Tamora Pierce that I could get my hands on. FFVI has always notoriously been my favourite, and you could argue that it’s because it’s a masterpiece, but I think we all know it’s because it featured two chicks as protags. In fandom circles, I’ve always gravitated towards girls. Despite this, in 2013 I found myself falling headfirst into Supernatural fandom, which was dominated by girls who wanted nothing to do with fictional women.

 But here’s the thing: tucked into the corners, one of the tiniest, kindest, most passionate femslash fandoms I had ever seen was growing. They were totally inspiring, and totally brilliant, and working with scraps. They really were the femslash change they wanted to see.

 Something I’ll never forget is a pact started by @clotpoleofthelord to boost the f/f ao3 count to over 1000 fics. Supernatural, eight seasons long, the most popular fandom on there at the time, couldn’t break 1000 femslash fics. Lis challenged everyone to do something about it – and you know what? I just checked ao3, and today that number is 4217.

 I think it’s that brand of passion that I’ve always admired in femslash writers, and that kind of scrappy attitude that has really let femslash explode across the internet in the past few years. Femslash fandom has gone from a place of having to say, “I think these two women interacted and it was interesting, let’s do something with that,” to a show like Carmilla, a bonafide f/f epic that’s left a permanent fingerprint on the web series world. I think that’s so cool.

 And it’s the spirit I want to keep moving towards. Because femslash fandom is beautiful, and its breathing, but it’s not perfect. So what’s the femslash change you want to see? Be it. I promise that I will try too. I promise that somebody out there already is, and that it’s incredible, and that they’re waiting to link arms with you. Isn’t that so cool?
