I especially love the quick-reference buttons to see the raw CSS. It reminds me of nothing so much as the incredibly complex Logo programs I used to write on my Apple ][+ in the 1980s, drawing very complicated, vector-based sprites and glyphs.

When the AT&T whistleblower Mark Klein walked into EFF's offices in 2005 to reveal that his employers had ordered him to help the NSA spy on the entire internet, it was a bombshell.

The Snowden papers revealed the scope of the surveillance in fine and alarming detail. According to his memoir, Snowden was motivated to blow the whistle when he witnessed then-NSA Director James Clapper lie to Senator Ron Wyden about the Klein matter.
Since that day in 2005, privacy advocates have been fretting about just how EASY it was to spy on the whole internet. So much of that was down to the fact that the net wasn't encrypted by default.
This was especially keen for @EFF. After all, we made our bones by suing the NSA in the 90s and winning the right for civilians to access working cryptography (we did it by establishing that "Code is speech" for the purposes of the First Amendment).

Monday 4th of October 2021 – Urban theory and global movement the 15-minute city as defined by Professor Carlos Moreno is the third winner of young, ambitious architecture award.
A truly liveable and sustainable urban future that places each global citizen at the heart of their own city. This is the goal of the 15-minute city, an urban model, which was chosen by the jury to win the third ever OBEL AWARD.

The idea behind the 15-minute city is that cities should be (re)designed, so that all residents are able to access their daily needs (housing, work, food, health, education, and culture and leisure) within the distance of a 15-minute walk or bike ride. This greatly reduces car traffic and CO2 emissions and increases the health and well-being of residents.
The model, which can be adjusted to local culture, conditions, and needs, has already been implemented with great success in cities like Paris, Chengdu, and Melbourne, generating a global movement.
According to the jury, the 15-minute city is a beautiful and intuitive vision that has the potential to vastly improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people worldwide and to help create a healthier planet.

“Like the two previous OBEL AWARD winners, this year’s winner is about protecting the environment and making life better for people. We are living in a time of urgency to make a change and live more efficiently. On receiving the award, Carlos Moreno says:

In my opinion, it is in fact a triple recognition: On the one hand, it is a recognition of my academic work, but secondly, it is a recognition of the international movement generated by the 15-minute city. And thirdly, it is a recognition of the commitment by different mayors around the world in embracing the 15-minute city.”
The award ceremony will take place on 21 October in Paris at the Salle des Fêtes of the Hôtel de Ville of Paris.

About the OBEL AWARD
The OBEL AWARD is a new, international prize for architectural achievement presented annually by the Henrik Frode Obel Foundation, founded by Henrik Frode Obel (1942-2014). The prize is 100,000 Euros and a unique artwork by leading artist Tomás Saraceno.
The aim of the award is to honour recent and outstanding architectural contributions to human development all over the world – architectural contributions considered broadly as any contribution that helps change our physical, designed environment for the common good. The award is given to works or projects from the past five years. It can be given to an individual or a team, and the award-winning project can range from a manifesto to a masterplan and include buildings, landscape projects, and exhibitions.

Carlos Moreno is French of Colombian origin. He is a Senior University Professor, a driving force behind Paris’s 15-minute city plan, and a Knight of the French Legion of Honour.
The outstanding career of Carlos Moreno is marked by an interest in people and a passion for cities and their complexity. Deeply committed to science, progress and creativity, Carlos Moreno embraces new technology for the common good, promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration between scientific disciplines and professionals in the innovation ecosystem, and participates in debates, working groups, and media interviews to discuss and disseminate new knowledge.

Carlos Moreno started his career with an interest in robotics. In 1983, he became a researcher and lecturer at the IUT in Cachan at the Université de Paris Sud, working in the computer science and robotics laboratory (LIMRO). In 1990, he began working at the Université d’Evry, where he became a Senior Professor, and in 1998, he created his own start-up, Sinovia, which centred on the intelligent control of complex systems with an emphasis on infrastructure. In 2006, Moreno turned his attention to cities – a complex system par excellence – and developed the concept of the ‘sustainable digital city’ as a viable platform from which to provide the services needed to ensure the well-being of a city’s inhabitants. In 2019, Carlos Moreno received the Foresight Medal by the French Academy of Architecture. In 2020, he was a scientific advisor to the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, during her re-election campaign. He also authored the book “Urban life and proximity at the time of Covid-19,” published by Editions de l’Observatoire, July 2020.

Mike Bloomberg’s Affordable healthcare plan: What is it??
Just recently the TrueCoverage team wrote an article ‘MEDICARE FOR ALL EXPLAINED’ and concluded that while the Democratic party had a distinctly different approach to funding national healthcare from the Republicans, they had yet to find ‘a policy which values enterprise and recognizes that the demand for ANYTHING FREE is infinite.’ In this article, we consider Mike Bloomberg’s stand on ACA and his vision of an affordable healthcare plan.
Whereas Sanders talks of ‘Medicare for all’ Bloomberg’s idea is to introduce an affordable healthcare plan, federally run, as a public option alongside the privately insured ACA.  Read about Bernie Sanders take on Medicare for all: Read more
The public insurance option would be aimed initially at the uninsured and low-income families in states which have not expanded Medicaid under ACA.
Mike Bloomberg’s ‘affordable healthcare plan’ can be described as having three objectives. They are to: –

The public health insurance (PHI) option would be administered by the federal government (not for profit) but paid for by customer premiums. The same tax reliefs and subsidies would apply as for plans bought on the health insurance exchanges. Individuals would be allowed to keep their private insurances.
At the same time some of Bloomberg’s ‘health care price capping’ and ‘cost control’ initiatives would make ACA compliant plans more affordable and increase the uptake of private health insurance. Currently, approximately 28 million Americans do not have health insurance and a further 41 million are thought to be under-insured.
Some counties do not have full (or any) health insurance coverage.  Mike Bloomberg’s stand on ACA would remove this injustice by bringing PHI to the market place.
Widen the range of services
Approximately 30% of US citizens do not visit their dentist regularly, nor do they seek preventative care for hearing and vision.  Bloomberg intends to include these as Medicare options and for all states to include oral health services for all adults in the ‘Medicaid’ program.
Reduce/control prices and charges
It is generally agreed that the cost of providing healthcare in the USA is too high (nearly 2x that of other developed countries).  The evidence suggests that in many areas (for instance, life expectancy and infant mortality) the outcomes are worse than in other advanced nations.
Extending coverage and widening the range of services are not, in themselves, going to reduce the cost of treatment and care. They should, of course, improve overall outcomes, e.g. life expectancy and infant mortality.
Bloomberg’s approach is to ‘cap’ individual’s premiums to 8.5% of household income.  This may be good news to us as individuals but will make additional demands on federal taxes.
He proposes various other caps. For example, on out-of-network charges and most significantly, on the price of medications including prescription drugs.  Bloomberg’s affordable healthcare plan would restrict US drug prices to 120% of the average price charged in other advanced nations. To illustrate the problem, some prescription drugs are available in Canada for approximately 30% of the cost of the same drug in the USA.  This may be good news for the US citizen with a chronic need but could have a huge revenue/profit impact on major US pharmaceutical companies.
The main influence on our choice of drugs is the pharmacist who fills our prescription.  Bloomberg proposes to ban payments to pharmacists by drug companies seeking to obtain preferential treatment.  No one should be incentivized to persuade us to buy a branded drug when the generic alternative is just as effective.
As we describe, Bloomberg offers a range of ideas to promote competition and efficiency while maintaining the ethical standards of Medicare, Medicaid and the ACA.
One further idea is to create a permanent reinsurance program.  This is common practice in most areas of insurance.  It encourages insurers to insure themselves, i.e. spread their risk of having to meet extreme claims. This would enable them to reduce premiums to their clients: Bloomberg claims by 10%.

No one seriously argues that the US health care system is either more efficient or more effective in terms of outcomes than health care systems in other advanced countries.

Coverage
In the US 10% of all Americans have no Health Insurance coverage compared with 99-100% coverage in the ten other countries in a recent JAMA study.
Donald Trump takes a laissez faire approach, reckoning that market forces will eventually determine a health care system where demand is met at an affordable price without the intervention of the federal government and minimal involvement of individual states.
The single payer system proposed by Sanders is entirely at odds with Republican ideology and is indeed not widely endorsed by his own party.  It would involve the complete dismemberment of existing structures.
In broad terms we devote some $3.5 trillion on the US health care system ($ spent either directly by us as individuals or indirectly through federal and state taxes). About 16 million people are employed within the system and millions more in supporting industries, such as pharmaceuticals and insurance.
Bloomberg’s proposals deserve consideration for their recognition of the multi-dimensional nature of the problems health care faces and the need to build on existing structures for the benefit of the whole nation.
