@aveasorae asked:
Q: in ‘word to the wise’, classmates are “appraising your rings” + in ‘the one who pulls the strings, beatrix mentions “bought my classmates rings” → why rings, specifically? what kind? what for?
This isn’t in the text anywhere but they’re high school class rings- like the ones that fancy private schools (or sometimes really big public high schools) sell to their graduates in America.
Lots of students can’t afford them, since they’re usually a couple hundred dollars, which always struck me as unjust. They were more common in the 1930s, so I imagined that in A Word To The Wise, the other students are peeping at people’s class rings to see if they’ve gone to a prestigious high school or not. What Bea is doing in The One Who Pulls The Strings is buying up used/secondhand class rings and using them kind of like Mama Rose does with the fraternity pins- one way she got ahead was by swapping out which ring she’s wearing and going “Ohh, you went to Fancytree Honeyoak Preparatory School? Omg so did I! So about that newspaper position…” I’d love to bring it more into our next draft!
