MWW Artwork of the Day (3/25/24) Fanny Brate (Swedish, 1861–1940) Namnsdag (A Day of Celebration)(1902) Oil on canvas, 88 x 110 cm. Nationalmuseum, Stockholm
Fanny Brate has become best known for her domestic interiors painted around the turn of the last century. "A Day of Celebration" is her most widely recognised work and has been reproduced on everything from postcards to coffee tins. In it Brate depicts preparations for a name’s day party in a large room at her husband’s family estate. The room features light furniture and textiles. The off-white Gustavian 18th-century furniture is combined here with older-style painted wall hangings and modern window dressing. The table is decorated with meadow flowers and ivy. All the greenery and light of nature appears to have moved indoors. In this work, Brate thus achieves a kind of interior open-air painting.

A Day of Celebration by Fanny Brate
The artist Fanny Brate depicts her daughters, Astrid and Torun, in the Brate family home in Bergslagen in central Sweden. The image combines the fin-de-siècle dream of a happy childhood with manor-house romanticism and the meadow flowers of Swedish summer.
The light interior design ideals of today derive in part from this tradition, which in turn drew inspiration from Swedish vernacular objects, domestic crafts, and the English Arts and Crafts movement. A charming scene, isn't it?
Early Life:
Fanny Ingeborg Matilda Brate, née Ekbom was a Swedish painter born on February 26, 1861 in Arvfurstens palats, a palace that was previously the private residence of Princess Sophia Albertina of Sweden. She was born and raised in there because her father was a clerk in the household of King Oscar II.
Arist in The Making:
While studying at an all-girls school she was taking part-time painting classes at the Arts and Crafts School. In 1885, she received recognition when she was awarded a Royal Medal for her painting Art Friend.
Art Style:
During her time in Paris, she visited many Impressionist exhibitions. Her later paintings show a direct influence of her time spent abroad. She painted many scenes featuring children in everyday life over the 19th and 20th centuries.
Legacy:
Although she painted many scenes featuring children in daily, outdoor activities, Fanny Brate became best known for her domestic interiors. The Day of Celebration, also known as Namnsdag is her most popular work, it is currently displayed in the National Museum in Stockholm.
