In regards to Fates, one things hasn't changed for me...
I am a Xander stan and am very partial to Conquest.
If it's not Conquest Xander, I don't want it lol
No disrespect to Birthright or Revelations players though! I understand why they might not feel the same, especially with what happens to Ryoma and Takumi in Conquest. And I recognize that it has many flaws, but they honestly don't bother me.
Conquest is just very, VERY personal to me as someone who finds a lot more value in found family than birth family. Conquest has things I LOVE that the other routes don't. I find it much more interesting and powerful to side with Nohr, than with Hoshido or neither. I've honestly only come to love it more over time, and honestly prefer it to any other title.
Xander in particular is probably my biggest comfort character these days (via his trauma, abuse, anxiety, and shy but nervous personality, and just the general complexity of his character) and I just cannot stand to NOT side with him or upset him in any way, much less fight him literally at ALL.
I've also had a great joy working with his relationship with Evangelina, my Fates avatar oc, in The Moonlit Heart. And with the other Nohrian royals too!

Thinking back, I actually think the game that taught me by far the most about the fundamentals of Fire Emblem gameplay was Fates, specifically Conquest.
I was able to get by with pretty rudimentary understanding of the mechanics in my first handful of games. But because the challenge on Conquest is so high, in addition to the fact that I was playing on original hardware so I couldn’t take advantage of stuff like save states, meant that I basically had no choice but to start actually calculating damage, make note of doubling ranges, and understand exactly what type of precision is needed to be used to keep my units alive.
I remember it being agonizingly tough, even on normal mode. Conquest was only my fifth FE game after 3H, the Tellius games, and Awakening, and it was the first Fates game I chose to play so I basically just tossed myself straight into the deep end. I spent a lot of that game extremely frustrated and exhausted, but I came out the other side loving it because it was such a satisfying experience to get through and it taught me a lot about how to play FE decently well.

Playing through FE Fates and there is just something about Keaton's design that always makes me think of Stitch. But maybe it's just me? 😅

Finishing Conquest has made me realize just how important characters are in a story, because this game’s story was stupid. Just, blatantly stupid, honestly pretty bad. But I still found myself largely enjoying the game and not minding how poorly written the main plot was because the cast was really likable. I really enjoyed the Nohrian siblings and all the other characters that came along (Keaton and Kaze and Jakob and Niles my beloveds). I think Corrin was the obvious weak link, but I still didn’t hate him as much as I remember hating him when I played Birthright a million years ago when I was like 14. Pretty much any problems with the characters I had came from the main story feeling really rushed and slap dash, which is a big shame.

Playing through Fates: Conquest and all I can think about is how Xander's big brother instincts must have kicked into overdrive when he first met Corrin 🥺

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
Chapter 10: This chapter seems difficult, but I have faith in my intellect. I will beat this chapter using only the strength and strategy of the units I have carefully nurtured.
Chapter 25: OKIE DOKIE HOW AM I GONNA CHEESE THIS PIECE OF SHIT LEVEL
