So I ordered another Zapper since the one that came with my NES didn't work... the new one works. Duck Hunt plays like a dream. I'm a lot better at it than I was when I was a kid. But i'm still not a perfect shot. I played it with the Wii, and with a mouse on my PC.. But that just felt way too easy. Having a crosshair on the screen really cheapens it.
Not only did my Zapper come in, but so did my everdrive... and much like my NES classic edition, I inagurated it with Super Mario Bros. But not just any version of Super Mario Bros. I played the Super Mario Bros. I played the Super Mario Bros. Tweaked.

( Not my gameplay, I just failed to take a snap shot )
So... I might make this my default way of playing Super Mario Bros.... on the NES anyway. I'll probably more often default to my Super Mario All-Stars redrawn hack once it's done.
It's essentially Super Mario Bros. Modernized, but with no silly changes to the graphics. It adds title screen music, the sounds pitch up when you rack up consecutive points, you can bounce higher off of an enemy when you hold the jump button like in SMB2J/Lost Levels onward, they extended the Princess Peah rescue music, you can earn 1ups with the starman, and you can earn 1ups by touching the top of the flag pole.
It feels just like the original game, just better.
I do think one change I don't care for is the fact that you just power down when you get hit as fire Mario. Kind of makes the game feel just a tad too easy... maybe that's a bit of a silly complaint when you can rack up 50 lives very easily compared to the first game where i'm lucky to even see double digits in my life counter, but ehhh, I feel how I feel.
If you always wanted to play SMB1 but couldn't get into it because it felt just slightly too antiquated, maybe give this version a spin.
