Ferrobus Hoy os presento dos nuevos tráficos en mi maqueta, un pequeño ferrobus Renfe serie 591 y el rápido Murcia – Caravaca.

28 September – Potosí

It was a few hours ascending and descending the winding road to Potosí which, according to the Rough Guide, is the highest city in the world at nearly 4,100m. This is disputed though my a quick Google search, which states that even the El Alto area of La Paz is higher. The city's fortune is due to the finding of silver 500 years ago, which meant that in the early 17th century the city’s population was equal to that of London. The city has a very different status today with only a limited amount of tin being mined in the Cerro Rico (rich hill) that towers over the city. The earlier fortune came with a great loss of life, and working conditions apparently continue to be very poor. I opted not to do the popular mine tour, partly for claustrophobia reasons. In fact I ended up doing very little in Potosí thanks to the arrival of my first dose of Bolivia belly, which meant I also missed a visit to the national Royal Mint museum, the other highlight in Potosí. I did though get to enjoy the great views of the city from the cathedral tower, and the hostel was very comfortable to spend a couple of days feeling sorry for myself, being located around an old colonial house courtyard, where I got to properly meet the first Brit on my travels.

The time I did get to venture out and about among the pretty colonial streets was spent attempting to limit my inhalation of the traffic fumes from the dirty old buses and cars, many of which I could only assume were secondhand Japanese vehicles, due to the lettering on them. The trick was to try and always walk along streets where the traffic was heading downhill. I’ve never experienced such terrible air quality and laughed when I saw an air quality monitoring station belonging to a local clean air project. The frenetic street life was all a bit much with my fever and churning stomach but when I saw a blind guy trying to negotiate the clutter, pavement holes and traffic, I realised that I had it very easy!

I did of course find some energy for an anorak moment, visiting the station from where the Potosí to Sucre ferrobus (railbus) service used to operate, another victim of passenger rail withdrawals during the past two years. I had read that it was due to a bridge collapse however I’ve also been told it was terminated due to lack of demand (the bus was twice the speed) and thieves removing sections of track! What also wasn’t clear to me was why there are still staff working at the station, other than keeping an eye on the, yet more, rusting abandoned steam engines. Anyway, the ride looked amazing, as the minibus literally fixed onto bogies traversed the twists and turns of the mountains and valleys between the two cities.
