The game was over. Chris had slipped away as soon as it was called, skipping out on getting any celebratory photos in favor of starting home as soon as possible. It was already late; she'd told her dad she had to stay for the baseball game tonight, it was part of her extracurriculars, but she wasn't sure he'd cared or remembered. There was every chance she'd come home to a fight, and if there was any chance of avoiding that, she'd take it. She grabbed her bag from her locker and left the film canister of tonight's photos on Mr. Anderson's desk before she hurried back towards the gym to slip out for the night.
A couple of the boys from the baseball team had already made their way back inside, heading for the boy's locker room while they laughed with one another. Chris kept her gaze down as she tried to hurry past them, pre-occupied with thoughts of getting home, but someone stepped right into her path. She sucked in a breath and looked up, frowning at the dark-haired boy in front of her. He was a senior, someone she took pains to avoid after the first time or two she'd caught a glimpse of him. He had his hands casually shoved into his pockets as he looked her over, flashing her a smile that was more a snarl.
"Christine! You're sure in a hurry out of here." Desmond studied her for a moment. "It's the last game of the season. You're not sticking around? Or coming to the party?"
It was said like a joke, because they both knew that was exactly what it was. Her hand tightened on the strap of her bag while as she met his gaze. "I've gotta get home," she said evenly. Desmond snorted out a laugh, trading a glance with the boy beside him. He shrugged.
"Alright, sure," he said, making a show of stepping out of her way. He gave her another smile, then waited until she'd taken a hesitant step to keep talking. "But you should learn to loosen up. No one's ever gonna wanna fuck you if you stay such an uptight bitch."
"Your own girlfriend didn't want to fuck you," she mumbled back. She tried to quicken her steps before he could retaliate, but she didn't get much of a chance before he'd grabbed at her bookbag and used it to tug her back around to face him. Desmond loomed over her, his eyes hot.
"The fuck did you just say to me?"
Her heart was racing. Chris glanced briefly at the other boy in the hallway with them, but it was clear he was just enjoying the show. She tried to shove at Desmond to make him give her space. "I said your girlfriend slept with Parker because she clearly didn't wanna do it with you. Now let-"
He'd grabbed onto her arm. Chris couldn't help the surprised, pained whine that slipped from her throat as his fingers squeezed down, no doubt leaving a bruise. Desmond leaned in close. "What the fuck does anyone have to say about that? That's no one's business! And you, bitch, if you know what's good for you-"
"Hey, Des!"
They both looked. Another member of the team stood further down the hall, a bottle of water in his hand like he'd just popped the cap off and immediately forgot about it. Andy was staring at them with something of a confused expression. He started to walk closer. "The hell is going on, man?" He glanced at Chris, but it was as if his gaze barely slid over her before he refocused on his teammate. "Who even is that?"
Desmond gave Chris a shove without fully letting go of her. She was feeling her eyes start to burn. "This little bitch-"
"Dude-" Andy glanced at her again as he got closer and rolled his eyes. "She looks like a freshman, what the fuck is she gonna do? Just leave off. Coach sent me in here to get you."
Desmond finally let go of her, seemingly having found a new thing to get annoyed by. "What does he want?"
"How should I know?" He nodded back towards the gym. "He's still outside. Alan, you too," he acknowledged the third boy, who'd been resigned to waiting for Desmond to get his business over with. "Senior meeting, or something. Come on."
With a huff, Desmond obeyed. He gave Chris one more hard glare before he started back down the hall, trailed by Alan and, finally, Andy. She waited as long as she could before she let her breath out in a rush and tried not to let it hitch as she leaned back against the wall. She lifted a hand to rub her arm where it was sore and was trying not to let the whole thing break her down into tears when she heard the gym door finally open. Hopefully, that meant they were gone.
They were. Mostly. Andy hesitated at the doorway, peeking in as if to watch his teammates for a moment, then stepped back. "Hey, Christine," he called, prompting her to look back up at him. He met her gaze for a moment. "You alright?"
Her brows furrowed. "..Fuck off," she managed finally, which was met with a small, surprised laugh. He nodded.
"Yeah, okay. See you around, okay?" He gave her one last glance-over, then slipped back into the gym, leaving her alone again. She caught her breath and reached up to scrub at her eyes. It wasn't until she'd started home again that she thought to wonder that he'd known her name.
