The Big Lesson to be Learned from the Korean Massacre in Beirut
The Big Lesson to be Learned from the Korean Massacre in Beirut
The Koreans did it again. Yup, Korea once again proved to be the country’s bane as they unceremoniously dismantled the Gilas Team 118-86 in the ongoing FIBA Asia Cup Championship. Not only did it put a sudden end to the Philippine campaign in the FIBA Asia Cup 2017; it totally embarrassed us with the huge margin we never imagined possible.
The South Koreans have been our traditional arch-rivals…

SOMETHING: Laban Pilipinas! PUSO! #GilasPilipinas
Just my thoughts about the recently concluded 2015 FIBA Asia Cup.

Last night, October 3, 2015, Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippine National Basketball Team lost to China during the final stage of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship. As a long time Gilas supporter, I was extremely sad to see the Gold medal go to China. That Gold medal could’ve been our ticket to automatically qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Nevertheless, Gilas got the silver medal and booked one of the three slots for the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments that will be held on July 2016.
However, Filipino netizens were quick to point out the poor officiating of the FIBA referees. As a basketball fan, I can say that the China-PH game was one of the worst officiated games that I have ever watched. Calls that were unreasonable were called against the Philippines. The non-calls were even worse. Don’t even get me started on that Jayson Castro travelling call which was clearly NOT travelling. How could a player travel when he is clearly dribbling the ball? Because of these, memes quickly circulated online.

Aside from the poor officiating of the game, there were reports of malicious tactics employed allegedly by China. I will give the Chinese players the benefit of the doubt whether they planned these tactics. I have no personal knowledge about whether these tactics were planned or just unfortunate coincidences. What we can all agree on is that these tactics were cheap and were seemed to be directed against the Philippine team. Firstly, the original 9:30 PM schedule of the semifinal game of the Philippines and Japan was moved to 10 PM last October 2, 2015. This caused the game to end later than expected and as a result, Gilas had lesser time to rest and prepare for the championship game. Secondly, Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP), President of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, pointed out on twitter that there was a failure to charge the Gilas electric service bus. This caused Gilas to arrive at the stadium at a later time causing them to have less time for warm-ups. Thirdly, MVP also pointed out the Gilas assistant coaches were not given tickets for the game. This is just ridiculous, these people are members of a participating team! They should not be in need of tickets. Lastly, during the time of Gilas’ warm-up, Chinese officials found a need to fix the net on the court. Gilas could’ve used that time to warm-up for the game, instead they had to watch these official fix the net while the Chinese team, on the other hand, were already doing their warm-ups and pre-game preparations.

I would also like to point out that some of the supporters of China were really rude towards Filipinos and the Gilas coaching staff. When Calvin Abueva fouled out of the game, some of them were even flaunting dirty fingers to him. It was also reported that some fans threw objects to the Gilas coaching staff. The security was not able, (or maybe not interested in trying) to control the hostility of the crowd.
Tumblr media
I’d like to clarify that I am NOT indicating that Team China isn’t deserving of the Gold. They are actually a very good team. In fact, they were able to defeat the defending champions, Iran, during the semifinals. They made those threes and their players are really athletic and skilled. I am merely sensing something sketchy and I am not the only one that thinks that. Unfortunately, these sketchy things are incidentally greatly favorable to China. I am asking FIBA if this is the kind of basketball they want to promote. Do they really want FIBA games to be dominated by poor officiating? If this is the case, then basketball fans, especially Filipino ones will start to lose confidence in them. If FIBA would ignore the problem of poor officiating, then it could greatly influence the games during the next FIBA Games. FIBA needs to stay credible, thus they should definitely look into these inconsistencies in referee calls. I am also expressing my worry about the 2019 FIBA World Championship that China will be hosting. If in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, China wasn’t able to address issues such as faulty service vehicles, nets that need fixing just minutes before a game, and a hostile audience, then how are they supposed to host the 2019 FIBA World Championships properly?  Do they want an unfriendly audience towards basketball teams? They need an audience with an appreciation and respect for the game itself. They also weren’t able to control the throwing of objects toward the coaching staff of the Philippines. Is this the kind of security that they will provide to international players in 2019?
I know that this post may sound biased and I respect if you think that it is. After all, I am a Filipino and a die hard basketball fan. I am also not a sports analyst, merely an avid supporter. I am sure that Gilas Pilipinas could have done better in that game against China, offensively and defensively. They missed a good number of easy layups and free throws. More importantly, I applaud their HEART AND PASSION for the game of Basketball. What I can say is, CHINA MAY HAVE WON THE GOLD BUT GILAS DID NOT LOSE THAT GAME. The PH team fought bravely and most importantly fairly. Their silver medal-finish is already an achievement in itself. The Philippines has again established itself as one of the powerhouses of Asian Basketball. That silver medal finish is already a proud moment for Pilipinas Basketball. I will continue to be a Gilas supporter – from Gilas 1.0 to Gilas 3.0 and beyond.
 LABAN PILIPINAS! PUSO!

Dear FIBA, This is a message coming from the country who loves Basketball more than any country does. A nation where Basketball is more than just a sport but also a source of inspiration, a foundation of gigantic dreams, a festival, a passion that initiates national unity. We, Filipinos, wholeheartedly thank you, FIBA. For giving the #Gilas the opportunity to show what Filipino hearts can do and how far we can go in the international Basketball. However, with what happened tonight, we are broken-hearted, degraded and betrayed. The referees were throwing unreasonable calls to us but were blind to see the obvious violations of Chinese players. Some of the calls against us were not only unreasonable, there were no reason at all! Why?? Why did you let that happen?? If there's somebody who's gonna understand the most how much we love Basketball it's gotta be you, FIBA. You broke the trust of not only a fan club but a whole nation. I'm sorry FIBA but you're killing the sport that you should be the one keeping it alive. Basketball is a sport more than a business and not the other way around. Don't worry. Our love for Basketball will never change. What changed was our trust that you will keep the game fair. #GILAS #PUSO #GilasTamangPanahon #FIBAAsiaCookingShow P.S. Shame on you referees. specially the one from Kazakhstan. Sana malunok mo yang pito mo. Joke lang. Haha. God bless everyone :D
